The Erdős--Hooley Delta-function is then defined by $\Delta(n):=\max_{u\in{\mathbb R}}\Delta(n,u).$ We improve recent upper and lower bounds for the mean value of this function by showing that, for large $x$, we have $$x(\log_2x)^{ 3/2}\ll\sum_{n\leqslant x}\Delta(n)\ll x(\log_2x)^{ 5/2}.$$

Abstract:The Erdős-Hooley Delta function is defined for $n\in\mathbb{N}$ as $\Delta(n)=\sup_{u\in\mathbb{R}} \#\{d|n : e^u<d\le e^{u+1}\}$. We prove that $\sum_{n\le x} \Delta(n) \ll x(\log\log x)^{11/4}$ for all $x\ge100$. This improves on earlier work of Hooley, Hall--Tenenbaum and La Bretèche-Tenenbaum.

Abstract:We give an improved lower bound for the average of the Erdős-Hooley function $\Delta(n)$, namely $\sum_{n\le x} \Delta(n) \gg_\varepsilon x(\log\log x)^{1+\eta-\varepsilon}$ for all $x\geqslant100$ and any fixed $\varepsilon$, where $\eta = 0.3533227\dots$ is an exponent previously appearing in work of Green and the first two authors. This improves on a previous lower bound of $\gg x \log\log x$ of Hall and Tenenbaum, and can be compared to the recent upper bound of $x (\log\log x)^{11/4}$ of the second and third authors.

Abstract:We obtain bounds to quantify the distributional approximation in the delta method for vector statistics (the sample mean of $n$ independent random vectors) for normal and non-normal limits, measured using smooth test functions. For normal limits, we obtain bounds of the optimal order $n^{-1/2}$ rate of convergence, but for a wide class of non-normal limits, which includes quadratic forms amongst others, we achieve bounds with a faster order $n^{-1}$ convergence rate. We apply our general bounds to derive explicit bounds to quantify distributional approximations of an estimator for Bernoulli variance, several statistics of sample moments, order $n^{-1}$ bounds for the chi-square approximation of a family of rank-based statistics, and we also provide an efficient independent derivation of an order $n^{-1}$ bound for the chi-square approximation of Pearson's statistic. In establishing our general results, we generalise recent results on Stein's method for functions of multivariate normal random vectors to vector-valued functions and sums of independent random vectors whose components may be dependent. These bounds are widely applicable and are of independent interest.

Abstract:In the late eighties, Hildebrand and Tenenbaum proved an asymptotic formula for the number of positive integers below $x$, having exactly $\nu$ distinct prime divisors: $\pi_{\nu}(x) \sim x \delta_{\nu}(x)$. Here we consider the restricted count $\pi_{\nu}(x,y)$ for integers lying in the short interval $[x,x+y]$. Extending the result of Hildebrand-Tenenbaum to this setting, we show that for any $\varepsilon >0$ \[ \pi_{\nu}(x,y) \sim y \delta_{\nu}(x), \] uniformly over all $1 \le \nu \le \log x/(\log \log x)^{4+\varepsilon}$ and all $x^{7/12 +\varepsilon} \le y \le x$. Consequently, we obtain mean upper bounds for the $k$-fold divisor function $\tau_k$ in short intervals, with strong uniformity in $k$.

Abstract:We provide a uniform bound on the partial sums of multiplicative functions under very general hypotheses. As an application, we give a nearly optimal estimate for the count of $n \le x$ for which the Alladi-Erd\H{o}s function $A(n) = \sum_{p^k \parallel n} k p$ takes values in a given residue class modulo $q$, where $q$ varies uniformly up to a fixed power of $\log x$. We establish a similar result for the equidistribution of the Euler totient function $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residues to the "correct" moduli $q$ that vary uniformly in a similar range, and also quantify the failure of equidistribution of the values of $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residue classes to the "incorrect" moduli.

Abstract:We derive new integral estimates of the derivatives of mean $n$-valent functions in the unit disk. Our results develop and complement estimates obtained by E.P. Dolzhenko and A.A. Pekarskii, as well as recent inequalities obtained by the authors. As an application, we improve some inverse theorems of rational approximation due to Dolzhenko.

In 1950 de Bruijn [4] studied the approximation of Φ ( x , y ) by the quantity μ y ( u ) e γ x log ⁡ y ∏ p ≤ y ( 1 − 1 p ) , where γ = 0.5772156 . . . is Euler's constant and μ y ( u ) : = ∫ 1 u y t − u ω ( t ) d t . He showed that the asymptotic formula Φ ( x , y ) = μ y ( u ) e γ x log ⁡ y ∏ p ≤ y ( 1 − 1 p ) + O ( x R ( y ) log ⁡ y ) holds uniformly for all x ≥ y ≥ 2 , where R ( y ) is a positive decreasing function related to the error estimates in the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain numerically explicit versions of de Bruijn's result.

Abstract:Abstract We show that for large integers n, whose ratios of consecutive divisors are bound above by an arbitrary constant, the number of prime factors follows an approximate normal distribution, with mean $C \log_2 n$ and variance $V \log_2 n$, where $C=1/(1-{\rm e}^{-\gamma})\approx 2.280$ and V ≈ 0.414. This result is then generalized in two different directions.

Abstract:We establish improved mean value estimates associated with the number of integer solutions of certain systems of diagonal equations, in some instances attaining the sharpest conjectured conclusions. This is the first occasion on which bounds of this quality have been attained for Diophantine systems not of Vinogradov type. As a consequence of this progress, whenever $u \ge 3v$ we obtain the Hasse principle for systems consisting of $v$ cubic and $u$ quadratic diagonal equations in $6v+4u+1$ variables, thus attaining the convexity barrier for this problem.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a mean value theorem for a general Dirichlet series $f(s)= \sum_{j=1}^\infty a_j n_j^{-s}$ with positive coefficients for which the counting function $A(x) = \sum_{n_{j}\le x}a_{j}$ satisfies $A(x)=\rho x + O(x^\beta)$ for some $\rho>0$ and $\beta<1$. We prove that $\frac1T\int_0^T |f(\sigma+it)|^2\, dt \to \sum_{j=1}^\infty a_j^2n_j^{-2\sigma}$ for $\sigma>\frac{1+\beta}{2}$ and obtain an upper bound for this moment for $\beta<\sigma\le \frac{1+\beta}{2}$. We provide a number of examples indicating the sharpness of our results.

Abstract:We consider logarithmic averages, over friable integers, of non-negative multiplicative functions. Under logarithmic, one-sided or two-sided hypotheses, we obtain sharp estimates that improve upon known results in the literature regarding both the quality of the error term and the range of validity. The one-sided hypotheses correspond to classical sieve assumptions. They are applied to provide an effective form of the Johnsen--Selberg prime power sieve.

The value of $\Delta_0$ is determined by an unexpected complexity parameter of the class $\mathcal{H}$ that captures the set's geometry (Talagrand's $\gamma_1$-functional). The bound, the probability estimate and the value of $\Delta_0$ are all optimal up to a logarithmic factor.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Abstract:Let $\displaystyle \sum_{i=a}^b \frac{1}{i} = \frac{u_{a,b}}{v_{a,b}}$ with $u_{a,b}$ and $v_{a,b}$ coprime. Erdős and Graham asked the following: Does there, for every fixed $a$, exist a $b$ such that $v_{a,b} < v_{a,b-1}$? If so, what is the least such $b = b(a)$? In this paper we will investigate these problems in a more general setting, answer the first question in the affirmative and obtain the bounds $a + 0.54\log(a) < b(a) \le 4.374(a-1)$, which hold for all large enough $a$.
