Abstract:Bandgap narrowing via the incorporation of strong donor and/or acceptor units into the molecular structure is a well-known strategy for the design of the long-wavelength fluorophores. Due to the energy-gap law, achieving high emission quantum yield at long wavelength becomes a paradox. Therefore, the red fluorescence emitters with external quantum efficiency (EQE) over 30 % have rarely been reported in comparison with blue and green fluorophores. In this work, a series of the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials (PH-TPA, BZ-TPA and PO-TPA) featured with rigid skeleton demonstrated low non-radiative decay rates and high photoluminescent quantum efficiency. Importantly, the engineering of molecular aspect ratio of the TADF emitters led to high horizontal emitting dipole ratio, thus enhancing the device performance. As a result, organic light-emitting diodes based on PH-TPA, BZ-TPA and PO-TPA showed record-high EQEs of 33.0 % at 624 nm, 31.3 % at 634 nm and 34.9 % at 632 nm, respectively. This work provided a facile and yet effective method for the construction of efficient red TADFs via the integration of rigid emission core and the control of molecular aspect ratio.

Abstract:Developing new electron acceptors with high rigidity and structural adjustability is significant for realizing efficient long-wavelength thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. Herein, a new acceptor group, acenaphtho[1,2- b ]quinoxaline-3,4-dicarbonitrile (AQCN), featuring a π-extended, rigid skeleton with high electron affinity, is developed for the construction of red TADF dyes. Two red light-emitting regioisomers, LB-Y and LB-T , featuring a Y-shape and T-shape D-A-D molecular configuration, respectively, were prepared by adjusting the relatively substituting position of two triphenylamine electron-rich moieties on AQCN. Through the isomeric engineering, it is found that LB-Y shows a high degree of molecular rigidity, matched excited-state energy level alignment, and decent interplay among singlet charge transfer excited state ( 1 CT), triplet locally excited state ( 3 LE) and triplet hybridized local and charge transfer excited state ( 3 HLCT). Therefore, LB-Y has a higher radiative transition rate (8.36 × 10 7 s −1 ), reverse intersystem crossing rate (1.02 × 10 5 s −1 ), and better electroluminescent performances ( λ EL = 614 nm, EQE max = 4.1%) than LB-T ( λ EL = 612 nm, EQE max = 2.6%). This study reports a promising electron acceptor and provides an efficient approach to modulating the optoelectronic properties of red TADF dyes.

Abstract:The fast triplet-singlet up-conversion based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules is a unique effort to improve the utilization of triplet excitons. We construct two TADF molecules using non-benzenoid aromatic aza-azulene as donor and triazine as acceptor. The distortion structural resonance of aza-azulene enhances the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process, resulting in efficient inter/intramolecular charge transfer (CT) emission. The rate constant of RISC (k(RISC)) is 9.0 x 10(6) and 8.4 x 10(6) s(-1) in solid states. Efficient Forster Energy Transfer (FRET) and/or Dexter Energy Transfer (DET) between these molecules and dopants make them suitable host materials to improve the performances of red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Especially, the top-emitting device achieves an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 51.3% and a current efficiency of 68.2 cd/A at 1000 cd m(-2) with a long device lifetime of LT95 = 52,350 and LT50 = 536,200 h.
Efficient Red Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters Achieved Through Precise Control of Excited State Energy Levels

Abstract:The variety of highly efficient red/near-infrared (NIR) materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) feature is extremely limited so far, and it is necessary to expand the candidate pool of excellent red/deep-red emitters. However, how to control the energy level alignment of the 1CT (singlet charge transfer) state and the 3LE (triplet local excitation) state to improve the emission efficiency of materials remains a challenge. Herein, based on our previously reported green fluorescent material 67dTPA-FQ, three new donor-acceptor type TADF materials (TQ-oMeOTPA, TsQ-oMeOTPA and SQ-oMeOTPA) were designed by introducing 4,4 '-dimethoxy triphenylamine (MeOTPA) as the donor, and introduced S atoms on the acceptors to enhance the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and CT effects. The theoretical calculations showed that the newly introduced MeOTPA and S atom successfully enhanced the CT effect of the materials, not only shifting the luminescence peak to the deep red region but also effectively adjusting the energy level alignment of the excited state, accelerating the reverse intersystem crossing process. Finally, the organic light-emitting diodes based on SQ-oMeOTPA exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 19.1%, with an emission peak at 619 nm. This work not only expands the candidate inventory of red TADF materials, but also proves the feasibility of designing emitters by adjusting the excited state energy levels, greatly broadening the diversity of TADF emitters in design, and providing a powerful means for rapidly screening efficient emitters in the future. Pyrazine-Based Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials: Combine Small Singlet–Triplet Splitting with Large Fluorescence Rate

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.

Abstract:A new molecular design of cyanobenzene‐decorated quinoxaline acceptor, combining two or four cyanobenzene acceptors and a rigid carbazole donor, is successfully utilized to construct long‐wavelength TADF emitters. The two additional cyanobenzene units at the 5‐ and 8‐positions of the quinoxaline acceptor are presumed to interlock the molecular rotations and improve the acceptor strength. Developing efficient long‐wavelength thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters is a challenging issue due to inherent limitations of the energy‐gap law. In this contribution, a new molecular design of cyanobenzene‐decorated quinoxaline acceptor, combining two or four cyanobenzene acceptors and a rigid carbazole donor, is successfully utilized to construct long‐wavelength TADF emitters (tCzQx2CN and tCzQx4CN). The two additional cyanobenzene units at the 5‐ and 8‐positions of the quinoxaline acceptor are presumed to interlock the molecular rotations and improve the acceptor strength. Compared with tCzQx2CN, tCzQx4CN exhibits orange‐red emission with a considerable bathochromic shift (>35 nm), as expected. Owing to its enhanced charge transfer and well‐separated highest‐occupied and lowest‐unoccupied molecular orbitals, tCzQx4CN exhibits reduced singlet‐triplet energy splitting and improves reverse intersystem crossing. An organic light–emitting diode (OLED) of tCzQx4CN manifestes bright orange‐red emission (λEL ≈581 nm), a superior external quantum efficiency (EQE) of ≈23.7% (compared with that of tCzQx2CN), and a satisfactory operational lifetime. Furthermore, a tCzQx4CN‐sensitized red‐hyperfluorescent OLED device exhibits excellent performance with an EQE of 16.0% and a CIE(x,y) of (0.62, 0.37). This design would potentially pave the way for constructing red/deep‐red TADF emitters by using a diverse combination of donor/acceptor units.

Abstract:In this work, orange‐red/red thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials achieve high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 91% with ultrashort exciton lifetimes of less than 1 μs, demonstrating a successful balance between high efficiency and fast reverse intersystem crossing. Highly efficient organic light‐emitting diodes are realized with external quantum efficiencies of up to 25.0% and small efficiency roll‐offs. The development of orange‐red/red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with both high emission efficiencies and short lifetimes is highly desirable for electroluminescence (EL) applications, but remains a formidable challenge owing to the strict molecular design principles. Herein, two new orange‐red/red TADF emitters, namely AC‐PCNCF3 and TAC‐PCNCF3, composed of pyridine‐3,5‐dicarbonitrile‐derived electron‐acceptor (PCNCF3) and acridine electron‐donors (AC/TAC) are developed. These emitters in doped films exhibit excellent photophysical properties, including high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.91, tiny singlet‐triplet energy gaps of 0.01 eV, and ultrashort TADF lifetimes of less than 1 μs. The TADF‐organic light‐emitting diodes employing the AC‐PCNCF3 as emitter achieve orange‐red and red EL with high external quantum efficiencies of up to 25.0% and nearly 20% at doping concentrations of 5 and 40 wt%, respectively, both accompanied by well‐suppressed efficiency roll‐offs. This work provides an efficient molecular design strategy for developing high‐performance red TADF materials.

Abstract:The development of red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters with the emission peak above 600 nm remains far behind blue and green emitters. Herein, the highly rigid polycyclic acceptors with strong electron-withdrawing ability, integrated by quinoxaline and 1,8-naphthalimideacridine units, were utilized to construct two new red emitters with emission peak at 640 nm. Both target molecules display the twisted configuration to decrease singlet-triplet splitting energy (Δ E ST ) for the TADF property. Red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing the emitters achieve the maximum external quantum efficiencies of 5.2% with electroluminescence peaks over 600 nm. This work provides a feasible strategy of the new polycyclic acceptors for developing efficient red TADF emitters.

Abstract:The development of efficient red electroluminescent devices is one of the formidable challenges in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) research. In this work, we reported three efficient red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on novel dibenzothioxanthene acceptor: 2SO-AD, 2SO-TBU and 2SO-F-TBU. Novel dibenzothioxanthene acceptor with large conjugation allows the energy of the locally excited triplet (3LE) state from the acceptor(A)-segment (3LEA) to be close to the charge transfer (CT) states in red emitters, thus enabling participation of the LE state to facilitate the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process. Furthermore, the bulky donor can effectively suppress the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), resulting in low non-radiative deactivation of 6.51×106 s1. The red OLED devices based on 2SO-TBU and 2SO-F-TBU emitters achieved the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 16.27% and 14.47%, respectively. This work paves a new way towards efficient red TADF emitters.

Abstract:In addition to emission efficiency and colors, emission characteristics such as preferentially horizontal emitting dipole orientation and resistance against concentration quenching are also highly desired for high-performance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. In this work, we report a simple and yet effective strategy for enhancing such emission performance of the pure red-to-near infrared (NIR) TADF emitter by introducing bulky aryl derivatives (m-xylene) to the efficient emission core. Incorporating m-xylene groups as the electronically inert pendants to the acceptor unit of the TADF emitter TPA-CN-N4-CH3 successfully retains favorable emission properties (e.g., pure red color chromaticity, nearly unitary photoluminescence quantum yield etc.) of the parent compound TPA-CN-N4 and yet also renders significantly higher horizontal emitting dipole ratio Theta// of similar to 85 % with the more extended molecular configuration and reduced concentration quenching at very high concentrations in thin films. As a result, OLEDs adopting TPA-CN-N4-CH3 can demonstrate rather high EQEs of 29.8-32.1 % for pure red emission (625-650 nm) at low doping concentrations and decent EQEs of 18.9-27.5 % in the deep red to NIR range (650-700 nm) at higher doping concentrations. The results of this work shall provide a useful reference for development of efficient TADF emitters.
Highly Efficient Orange-Red Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Compounds Comprising Dual Dicyano-Substituted Pyrazine/Quinoxaline Acceptors

Abstract:The π-conjugation of molecules has a large influence on their excited state properties, especially for red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Two orange-red TADF compounds comprising dual dicyano-substituted pyrazine/quinoxaline acceptors have been designed and synthesized. TPA-2DCNQ (3,3'-((phenylazanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(2-phenylquinoxaline-6,7-dicarbonitrile) with extended π-conjugated quinoxaline as the acceptor exhibits higher photoluminescence quantum yields (ca. 0.67-0.71) in doped films. A smaller energy splitting (ΔEst ) between the first singlet excited state and triplet excited state is also achieved, indicating that extending the π-conjugation of the acceptor rationally is an effective approach to designing highly efficient long-wavelength TADF materials. Devices with TPA-2DCNQ as the emitter display maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 12.6-14.0 %, which are more than twice those of devices containing TPA-2DCNPZ (6,6'-((phenylazanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(5-phenylpyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile).
Benzene[g]furan[2,3-B]quinoxaline-based Red Fluorescent Material for Non-Doped Organic Light-Emitting Devices with Low Efficiency Roll-off

Abstract:New emitters with deeply red emission and slow efficiency roll-off in non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are highly expected. In this work, we used our recently developed 2-phenylbenzo[g]furo[2,3-b]-quinoxaline as the acceptor (A) and triphenylamine (TPA) as the donor (D), synthesized a D-A type red emitter, TPA-PFQ. The TPA-PFQ presented a high quantum yields of 88.03% in toluene solution. Using it as emitter, the non-doped OLEDs showed a saturated red emission with a peak of 620 nm and a maximum luminance of 11190 cd m(-2). Moreover, the non-doped OLEDs presented a maximum EQE of 2.09% (2.47 cd A(-1)) at 100 cd m(-2), and remained 2.0% (2.40 cd A(-1)) at 1000 cd m(-2), 2.03% (2.49 cd A(-1)) at 5000 cd m(-2), only 2.9% efficiency roll-off with the luminance changed from 100 cd m(-2) to 5000 cd m(-2). Our experiments demonstrated benzo[g]furo[2,3-b]quinoxaline skeleton could serve as a promising acceptor unit for constructing deep red emitters.
High-efficiency red thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters based on benzothiophene-fused spiro-acridine donor

Abstract:Red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters underperform their blue and green counterparts, largely due to their low photoluminescence quantum efficiency and isotropic orientation. Here, we designed two rigid and strong electron-rich donor moieties, 3-methyl-13H-spiro[benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-c]acridine-5,9′-fluorene] (MSTA) and 3-phenyl-13H-spiro[benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-c]acridine-5,9′-fluorene] (PSTA), by fusing benzothiophene unit on a spiro-acridine framework. Combined with a rigid, linear, and planar acenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline-9,10-dicarbonitrile (ANQDC) acceptor, two red emitters, ANQDC-MSTA and ANQDC-PSTA, were synthesized and characterized. In virtue of high rigidity and linear donor–acceptor (D-A) molecular skeleton, both emitters showed distinct TADF nature, high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies and high horizontal ratios of emitting dipole orientation of ≈85%. Consequently, the ANQDC-PSTA-based OLEDs realized high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 24.7% at an electroluminescence peak (ELpeak) of 622 nm, together with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage 1931 (CIE1931) coordinates of (0.61, 0.38). Furthermore, with the modulation of the microcavity effect on the device architecture, we delivered a 19.1% EQE in a deep-red EL region, with an ELpeak of 646 nm and favorable CIE1931 coordinates of (0.64, 0.36). These efficiencies are on par with the highest EL performance for red TADF OLEDs in the similar color gamut.

Abstract:Abstract Multiple resonances induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) has great advantages in high color purity display. Up to now, current MR‐TADF emitters are only based on the boron‐nitrogen‐containing fragment. Reported herein is a novel class of MR‐TADF emitter, quinolino[3,2,1‐ de ]acridine‐5,9‐dione (QAO), realized by the opposite resonance effect of the carbonyl and the nitrogen atoms, which is also the smallest TADF emitter reported so far. The QAO‐based pure blue organic light‐emitting diode achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 19.4% with a small full width at half maximum of 39 nm. Moreover, tert ‐butyl modified QAO can be employed as an efficient electron acceptor to construct an efficient yellow‐green evaporation and solution process feasible TADF emitter, 7‐( tert ‐butyl)‐3,11‐bis(9,9‐dimethylacridin‐10(9 H )‐yl)quinolino[3,2,1‐ de ]acridine‐5,9‐dione (QAO‐DAd), with significantly improved performance as compared to the previous flexible diketone‐based emitters.

Abstract:The development of efficient red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters experiences considerable challenges in maintaining a high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) and tuning the singlet–triplet energy gap simultaneously. In addition, the positional isomeric effect could significantly impact the charge transfer efficiency and eventually influence the propensity of TADF features. In this study, two pairs of regio-isomeric V- and T-shaped D–A–D molecules involving a new acceptor of pyridobenzoquinoxaline (PQ) are developed and systematically characterized. These molecules differ from each other with respect to different substitutions of dimethylacridine and phenoxazine donors at 3,6- and 2,7-positions of PQ, respectively. Good separation of the frontier molecular orbitals is observed in these compounds leading to obvious TADF behaviors. Compared with T-shaped molecules, V-shaped emitters exhibit higher PLQY due to less geometry relaxation and less vibration modes, as confirmed by both theoretical and experimental analyses. The device based on PQDMAC-V displays a higher maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 12.9% with emission peaking at 604 nm whereas PQDMAC-T achieves an EQE max of 8.5% with emission peaking at 612 nm. This study highlights the importance of enhancing radiative decay for developing efficient red TADF emitters and suggests the better substitution pattern of V-typed design.

Abstract:Efficient red emitters are crucial to the widespread use of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in future display and lighting technologies. However, the highly planar configurations of red TADF emitters lead to intermolecular-interaction-induced quenching. To obtain highly efficient doping-insensitive red emitter, a novel asymmetric red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, TPA-AQ-DCP, was developed using an asymmetric donor-acceptor-host (D-A-H) structure. The material consists of anthraquinone as the acceptor, triphenylamine as the donor, and 1,4-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene (DCP) serving as part of the emitter with host material properties. It is demonstrated that incorporating the host group into the TADF emitter with asymmetrical structure improves electron and hole transport within the emitter, effectively reducing concentration quenching. As a consequence, the asymmetric D-A-H structured TPA-AQ-DCP exhibited relatively high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 79.2% and fast radiative rate constant (kr) of 6.60 × 107 s–1, and thus better EL performance. Consequently, efficient external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.76-17.60% with emission peak of 610-620 nm were achieved for TPA-AQ-DCP-based devices with doping ratios ranging from 5 wt% to 25 wt%.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted much attention as they can achieve 100% theoretical internal quantum efficiency without using expensive noble metals. However, efficient red TADF emitters are hard to realize according to the energy gap law. Here, three donor-acceptor-donor type TADF emitters with the same acceptor of o-phthalodinitrile (PN) but different donors (9, 9-dimethyl-9, 10-dihydroacridine (DMAC), phenoxazine (PXZ), and phenothiazine (PTZ) for DMAC-PN, PXZ-PN, and PTZ-PN, respectively) have been synthesized, and it is observed that the performance of the emitters can be improved by reducing the intra-molecular p-p stacking. DMAC-PN with reduced intramolecular p-p stacking shows a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 20.2% in degassed toluene solution, much higher than those of PXZ-PN, and PTZ-PN (0.8%, 0.2%, respectively). An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) employing DMAC-PN doped into 4,4'bis( 9H-carbazol-9-yl) biphenyl (CBP) as the emitting layer exhibits a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.2% with the emission peak at 564 nm. Moreover, when DMAC-PN is doped into a polar host, bis[2-(diphenylphosphino) phenyl] ether oxide (DPEPO), the OLED shows a large redshift of the emission maximum to 594 nm, while maintaining a peak EQE as high as 7.2%, indicating that efficient red TADF OLEDs can be fabricated by doping orange TADF emitters into hosts with proper polarity.

Abstract:Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) has been proven effective for designing thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters due to the separation of the frontier molecular orbitals. Although tuning of the interaction between the donor and acceptor by controlling the conformation is known to be crucial for the photophysical properties of TSCT excited states, it remains a challenge to realize efficient red and deep-red emissions. Herein, we designed two TSCT molecules, namely TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX, by using oxygen-bridged triphenylamine (TPXZ) as the electron donor with enhanced planarity and electron-donating capability. With a face-to-face orientation of the donor and acceptor segments and close π-π contacts, the new emitters have strong intramolecular noncovalent donor-acceptor interactions. The emissions of TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX in doped thin films lie in the red (λmax = 632 nm) to deep-red (λmax = 665 nm) region. The photoluminescence quantum yields are 41% and 32% for TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX, respectively. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX show external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 13.8% and 11.4%, respectively. This work indicates that the modulation of TSCT excited states based on strong intramolecular cofacial π-stacking interactions is a viable choice for the development of high-efficiency long-wavelength TADF emitters.

Modulating Non‐Radiative Deactivation via Acceptor Reconstruction to Expand High‐Efficient Red Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Emitters

Abstract:The development of high‐efficient red thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials is crucial to expanding their applications. Here, the acceptor reconstruction strategies of acceptor bonding and acceptor fusing in donor–acceptor‐type materials to modulate their nonradiative deactivation process and emission color for expanding high‐efficient red TADF emitters are presented. They are applied to design novel red TADF emitters TXO‐b‐TPA and TXO‐f‐TPA based on non‐red thioxanthone oxide (TXO) acceptor. Compared to TXO‐based emitter TXO‐TPA, these acceptor reconstruction strategies enable red‐shifted (48–88 nm) and efficient red TADF emission (600–640 nm). Their radiative and nonradiative transition processes can be modulated by the different molecular orbital and excited state distributions based on their acceptor structural differences, which results in a dramatic enhancement of their organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) device efficiencies from 1.21/3.63% (TXO‐f‐TPA) to 20.9% (TXO‐b‐TPA). These results confirm that the acceptor reconstruction strategies provide a viable solution for overcoming the limitations of previous red TADF emitters. Moreover, the retrieval of reported TADF materials can further demonstrate that these acceptor reconstruction strategies can be transferrable to more non‐red TADF materials to expand high‐efficient red‐shift and/or red TADF materials. The general acceptor reconstruction strategies of acceptor bonding and acceptor fusing for non‐red thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) acceptors are developed to expand red TADF emitters. The reconstructed acceptor spatial structures induce the regulable radiative and non‐radiative transfer processes of the emitters for high‐efficient red TADF emission.
