Abstract:The conventional Mohr–Coulomb (M–C) failure criterion is not suitable for judging failure behaviors of a hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) as a result of the variation of its mechanical properties with the clay content and hydrate saturation. Although some modified M–C failure criteria have been proposed by previous scholars, the effect of the clay content on mechanical properties and strength failure was not considered. In this paper, we carried out a series of triaxial shear tests to analyze the effect of hydrate saturation and clay content on mechanical properties of HBS. On the basis of the experimental results, a new modified M–C failure criterion for HBS was proposed, in which the influence of the clay content and hydrate saturation was considered. The results implied that both hydrate saturation and clay content have significant influence on the shear strength and cohesion of HBS, but its influence on the internal friction angle is relatively weak. When the clay content is low, clay fills up the pores, increasing the frictional resistance and enhancing the shear strength. When the clay content exceeds a certain value, clay exists not only in pores but also between sediment particles, changing the original type of contact between sediment particles. Moreover, the clay is soft, which reduces the shear strength of the HBS to a certain extent. A comparison between experimental and modeling results indicated that the modified M–C criterion can be used to describe the shear failure of HBS. However, the value of fitting coefficients a and b, the internal friction angle φ, and the cohesion c(S h=0) should be updated when the component of HBS is changed.
