Abstract:In practice, Airy beams can only be reproduced in an approximate manner, with a limited spatial extension and hence a finite energy content. To this end, different procedures have been reported in the literature, based on a convenient tuning of the transmission properties of aperture functions. In order to investigate the effects generated by the truncation and hence the propagation properties displayed by the designed beams, here we resort to a new perspective based on a trajectory methodology, complementary to the density plots more commonly used to study the intensity distribution propagation. We consider three different aperture functions, which are convoluted with an ideal Airy beam. As it is shown, the corresponding trajectories reveals a deeper physical insight about the propagation dynamics exhibited by the beams analyzed due to their direct connection with the local phase variations undergone by the beams, which is in contrast with the global information provided by the usual standard tools. Furthermore, we introduce a new parameter, namely, the escape rate, which allow us to perform piecewise analyses of the intensity distribution without producing any change on it, e.g., determining unambiguously how much energy flux contributes to the leading maximum at each stage of the propagation, or for how long self-accelerating transverse propagation survives. The analysis presented in this work thus provides an insight into the behavior of finite-energy Airy beams, and therefore is expected to contribute to the design and applications exploiting this singular type of beams.

Generalized flux trajectories: New insights into partially coherent Airy beams

Abstract:The propagation of Airy beams in free space is characterized by being non dispersive, which warrants the shape invariance of their intensity distribution, and self-accelerating along the transverse direction. These distinctive traits are still present in partially coherent Airy beams as long as the reach of their back tail (and hence their energy content) is not importantly reduced. To investigate the effects associated with the decrease of the beam coherence and its power content (by smoothly reducing the reach of their back tails), here we introduce a novel and insightful methodology based on a generalization of the concept of flux trajectory for paraxial partially coherent beams. This methodologies emphasizes the role of phase relations, thus helping to clarify why and how the beam smears out spatially along its propagation. This formalism, though, is general enough to tackle other types of structured light beams with whatever degree of partial coherence, from full coherence to total incoherence.

Abstract:We propose an optical Airy transform in this paper, and obtain the analytical expressions for the Airy transform of fundamental Gaussian beams and finite energy Airy beams. The setup for performing the optical Airy transform is presented. The Airy transform for Gaussian beams and finite energy Airy beams are theoretically calculated and analyzed. Our results show that the Airy beam can be conveniently generated and controlled through the optical Airy transform of the Gaussian beam. The optical Airy transform also can be used to directly modulate the beam parameters of the incident Airy beam, and it can transform the incident Airy beam into the Gaussian beam.

Abstract:The propagation of finite energy Airy beams in dynamic parabolic potentials, including uniformly moving, accelerating, and oscillating potentials, is investigated. The propagation trajectories of Airy beams are strongly affected by the dynamic potentials, but the periodic inversion of the beam remains invariant. The results may broaden the potential applications of Airy beams, and also enlighten ideas on Airy beam manipulation in nonlinear regimes.

Abstract:We investigated the propagation and autofocusing properties of three Airy-related beams, which are generated by three holograms with unique conjugation and symmetry. Beam patterns are simulated by using angular spectrum formalism and observed experimentally. The autofocusing behavior of black Airy beam is accompanied by formation of eight intensity peaks in the transversal plane. We find that the effect of non-ideal boundary condition is reflected in the diffraction fringes, and the affected ranges are different for different beams.

Abstract:Owing to their nondiffracting, self-accelerating, and self-healing properties, Airy beams of different nature have become a subject of immense interest in the past decade.Their interesting properties have opened doors to many diverse applications.Consequently, the questions of how to properly design the spatial manipulation of Airy beams or how to implement them in different setups have become important and timely in the development of various optical devices.Here, based on our previous work, we present a short review on the spatial control of Airy beams, including the interactions of Airy beams in nonlinear media, beam propagation in harmonic potential, and the dynamics of abruptly autofocusing Airy beams in the presence of a dynamic linear potential.We demonstrate that, under the guidance of nonlinearity and an external potential, the trajectory, acceleration, structure, and even the basic properties of Airy beams can be adjusted to suit specific needs.We describe other fascinating phenomena observed with Airy beams, such as self-Fourier transformation, periodic inversion of Airy beams, and the appearance of spatial solitons in the presence of nonlinearity.These results have promoted the development of Airy beams, and have been utilized in various applications, including particle manipulation, self-trapping, and electronic matter waves.

Abstract:We investigate the propagation properties of finite-energy Airy beams in nonlocal nonlinear atomic vapor. The nonlocality is caused by the transportation of optically excited atoms and described with a Green function. By conducting numerical simulation on Airy beams in the case of one-dimension, two-dimensions, and ring geometry, respectively, we find that the beams have a more stable shape and a longer propagation distance in the presence of nonlocality. The results show that the nonlocality can slow down the beams' distortion induced by the self-focusing effect and contributes to a more stable propagation of Airy beams in the nonlinear media. Abstract:<p>Modulated by the spatial phase, Airy-like beams that possess the faster and better self-healing as well as the greater acceleration along the desired arbitrary trajectory are introduced. Airy-like beams have the strong spontaneous-focusing ability and the peak value of the focal plane is 5.4 times that of the initial plane when traveling along the quadratic function trajectory. Besides, the larger quadratic coefficient and the smaller constant term of the quadratic function can enhance the self-healing and the spontaneous-focusing of the beams. When the beams transmit along the snakelike trajectory, the original main lobe separates a new main lobe, and the energy will concentrate on the new main lobe. Airy-like beams, along a hyperbolic-secant trajectory, can remain non-diffraction over long distances. However, when traveling along a hyperbolic trajectory, the evolution process is very similar to that of Airy-Gaussian vortex beams. These excellent properties can be applied to the special beams' modulation and optimization. Furthermore, it may provide a way for constructing beams along the special trajectory with the desired spontaneous-focusing and self-healing.</p>

Abstract:We found a new type of noncircular symmetrical Airy beam called an elliptical Airy beam (EAB). Using a simple single-pixel checkerboard hologram method, we achieved the EAB in an experiment. We observed its unique property of double focusing and the ability of the energy to flow towards the endpoints of the long axis during propagation. These particular properties will have some potential applications.

Abstract:A question of physical importance is whether finite-energy spatiotemporally localized (i.e., pulsed) generalizations of monochromatic accelerating Airy beams are feasible. For luminal solutions, this question has been answered within the framework of paraxial geometry. The time-diffraction technique that has been motivated by the Lorentz invariance of the equation governing the narrow angular spectrum and narrowband temporal spectrum paraxial approximation has been used to derive finite-energy spatiotemporally confined subluminal, luminal, and superluminal Airy wave packets. The goal in this article is to provide novel exact finite-energy broadband spatio-temporally localized Airy solutions (a) to the scalar wave equation in free space; (b) in a dielectric medium moving at its phase velocity; and (c) in a lossless second-order temporally dispersive medium. Such solutions can be useful in practical applications involving broadband (few-cycle) wave packets.

Abstract:A new kind of Airy-related beam has been obtained from Airy transform for flat-topped Gaussian beams. It is proved in this paper that this beam also possesses an "Airy" profile, quasi-diffraction-free character and transverse accelerating character as the Airy beam generated from the fundamental Gaussian beams. The propagation dynamics of this beam can be modulated by varying N, i.e., the beam order of the flat-topped Gaussian beam.

Abstract:Generalized two-dimensional (2D) Airy beam is a kind of self-accelerating beam with variable initial angle between its two wings, manifested itself as an initial angle determined parabolic trajectory during the free-space propagation. However, the independent and flexible manipulation of both the transverse optical field and longitudinal trajectory of the generalized 2D Airy beam has not been achieved yet which limits its application in the various fields. Herein, we report on tailoring of the propagation properties of the generalized 2D Airy beam based on the catastrophe theory, where analytical expression of its propagation trajectory is derived. In order to clarify the relationship between the transverse optical field distribution and the longitudinal trajectory, we analytically put forward a generation vector, facilitating the tailoring of both longitudinal trajectory and transverse distribution of optical field simultaneously. Consequently, we can effectively generate the generalized 2D Airy beam and precisely manipulate the evolution of its peak intensity. Once the initial and terminal points of trajectory are determined in advance, we can flexibly tailor the trajectory of 2D Airy beam, with the help of corresponding generation vector. Meanwhile, when the longitudinal trajectory is fixed, we can flexibly rotate the transverse optical field distribution of the generalized 2D Airy beam and manipulate its initial angle. Experimental verifications of the manipulation capabilities for the longitudinal trajectory, initial angle, and the rotation of transverse optical field are provided to validate our theoretical results

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of spatiotemporal optical waves with one transverse dimension that are obtained as the intersections of the dispersion cone with a plane. We show that, by appropriate spectral excitations, the three different types of conic sections (elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic) can lead to optical waves of the Bessel, Airy, and modified Bessel type, respectively. We find closed form solutions that accurately describe the wave dynamics and unveil their fundamental properties.

New solution to Airy's equation for modeling beams near turning points

Abstract:Here I present a summarised description of the general behavior of waves near turning points. I show that when asymptotic matching to a prescribed incident wavefield is performed, the solution changes from being the Airy function to being more generally the hyperbolic umbilic function. This solution accounts for (de-)focusing of the incident wavefield due to gradient-index lensing in addition to the familiar Airy physics, which importantly do not superimpose. Possible applications to fusion research are discussed.

Abstract:A stationary beam forming an Airy-like spectral density in the far field is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The Schell-model source that radiates such a beam is an extended version of a recently introduced source [O. Korotkova, et al., Opt. Lett. 43, 4727 (2018)10.1364/OL.43.004727; X. Chen, et al., Opt. Lett. 44, 2470 (2019)10.1364/OL.44.002470, in 1D and 2D, respectively]. We show, in particular, that the source degree of coherence, being the fourth-order root of a Lorentz-Gaussian function and having linear and cubic phase terms, may be either obtained from the Fourier transform of the far-field Airy-like pattern or at the source using the sliding function method. The spectral density of the beam is analyzed on propagation through paraxial ABCD optical systems, on the basis of the generalized Collins integral, by means of the derived closed-form expression. We show that the distribution of the side lobes in the Airy beam spectral density can be controlled by the parameters of the source degree of coherence. Further, an experiment involving a spatial light modulator (SLM) is carried out for generation of such a beam. We experimentally measure the complex degree of coherence of the source and observe the gradual formation of a high-quality Airy-like spectral density towards the far field. In addition, the trajectory of the intensity maxima of the beam after a thin lens is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The random counterpart of the classic, deterministic Airy beam may find applications in directed energy, imaging, beam shaping, and optical trapping.

Abstract:Acceleration and deceleration of one-dimensional and two-dimensional obliquely incident Airy beams are investigated theoretically and numerically. One-dimensional Airy beams with given initial velocities propagate along parabolic trajectories. However, the beams will undergo deceleration and then acceleration if the initial velocity is in the opposite direction to the acceleration. In the opposite case, the beams will only accelerate during propagation. Two-dimensional tilted Airy beams are treated as products of two 1D Airy beams with initial velocities. Such accelerating and decelerating properties due to initial velocities can be effectively controlled by small angles of incidence.

Abstract:The reflection and transmission of a finite-power Airy beam incident on a dielectric slab are investigated by an analytical method. Based on the plane-wave angular spectrum expansion and Fresnel approximation, the analytical expressions of the reflected field, internal field as well as transmitted field in each region are obtained. Through numerical simulations, the intensity distributions of the incident beam, reflected beam, internal beam as well as transmitted beam are presented at oblique incidence. Besides, we also compare the intensity distributions of the geometrical-optics beam field, the first order beam mode field and the actual beam field, which indicates that the contribution of each order beam mode field to the actual beam field is related to the refractive index of the dielectric slab. Meanwhile, the reflection characteristics of the Airy beams in the special cases of Brewster incidence and total reflection are investigated. Finally, the effects of the optical thickness and refractive index of the dielectric slab on the peak intensity distributions and beam shifts of the reflected and transmitted beams are also discussed in detail. The analytical and numerical results will be useful to analyze the propagation dynamics of Airy beam in the dielectric slab and provide some theoretical supports to the design of optical film.

Abstract:In this letter, we deduce the approximate analytical formula for the finite Airy beam propagating in the misaligned slab system with a rectangular aperture by using the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral equation, the light transfer matrix and expanding the hard-edged rectangular function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian function. The particular cases of this beam propagating in the apertured aligned slab system, unapertured misaligned slab system and unapertured aligned one are further illustrated through numerical examples as well. The effects of aperture size and misaligned factors on beam evolution in these slab structures are developed, which can provide a fast and effective method for investigating other kinds of pseudo non-diffracting laser beams through the rectangularly apertured misaligned slab system because most of the optical devices are slightly misaligned more or less in the practical application.
