Abstract:Although the long-term behavior of composite beams raises critical concerns in their application, only a few investigations have been conducted on the time-dependent response of continuous composite beams (CCBs). Herein, long-term tests were conducted on four two-span CCBs with different loading ages. The shear stiffness and time-slip relationship of flexible shear connectors were evaluated by carrying out short-term and long-term push-out tests. The experimental results revealed that loading age substantially affected the development of deflection, interface slip, crack, and internal force redistribution of CCBs under sustained loads. A finite element model (FEM-2) of test specimens was developed, considering the damage evolution, creep and shrinkage of concrete slab, and stiffness degradation of connectors. After the FEM results were verified against the experimental data, the developed FEM-2 model was implemented to further investigate the influences of loading age and loading level on the long-term performance of CCBs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the time-dependent response of continuous steel-concrete composite beams (CCBs) under sustained loads. Specifically, the study attempts to address the following key issues: 1. **Understanding the impact of loading age on the long-term behavior of CCBs**: Loading age refers to the age of the concrete when it is first subjected to stress. The paper experimentally investigates the long-term behavior differences of CCBs under different loading ages (7 days, 14 days, 28 days), with a particular focus on how these differences affect the deformation and crack development of the beams. 2. **Evaluating the performance of connectors over time**: Through short-term and long-term push-out tests (POTs), the shear stiffness and time-slip relationship of flexible shear connectors are evaluated. This helps in understanding how changes in connector performance affect the time-dependent behavior of CCBs. 3. **Developing a finite element model to simulate the long-term performance of CCBs**: Based on experimental results, a finite element model (FEM-2) that considers the damage evolution, creep, and shrinkage characteristics of the concrete slab is developed. This model is used to further explore the impact of loading age and load levels on the long-term performance of CCBs. In summary, this study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the long-term behavior of CCBs under sustained loads through experimental and numerical simulation methods, with a particular focus on the impact of loading age on this behavior. The research findings are of significant importance for guiding the design and construction of CCBs.
