Abstract:The thermal susceptibility of asphalt pavements causes problems such as permanent deformation at high temperatures and thermal cracking caused by contraction and expansion. The potential use of aerogel could enhance the properties of current bitumen materials as a viable solution. The aim of this study is thermal analysis, structural and mechanical properties of bitumen and nano silica aerogel composite. Therefore a homogeneous composite material of bitumen and silica aerogel powder was prepared by high shear mixing at ambient and elevated temperatures. The nano-silica aerogel additive was used in varying proportions: 1%, 2%, and 3% by mass of the bitumen for mechanical and structural tests, with 3% by mass also used for thermal analysis. FE-SEM and FTIR analyzed microstructure and chemical bonding. TGA and DSC conducted the thermal analysis. Additionally, the immersion method was used to measure the density of the composite materials, and the tensile test assessed mechanical behavior. The FESEM image showed that a homogeneous dispersion of aerogel particles in a continuous bitumen matrix was formed. FTIR shows stable chemical bonds in the bitumen-aerogel mix at ambient temperature, but changes occur at elevated temperatures. Thermal analysis showed that the aerogel-bitumen mixture exhibits endothermic reactions when heated. Added aerogel significantly reduced composite density, while the tensile test demonstrated increased strength compared to base bitumen. The addition of 1%, 2%, and 3% aerogel decreased the composite density by 0.34%, 2%, and 5%, respectively. Meanwhile, addition of 1%, 2%, and 3% nano silica aerogel significantly increased the strength of the tensile specimens by 87%, 122%, and 255%, respectively. Based on these findings, a 3% aerogel proportion enhances mechanical properties and reduces density optimally. Further, this proportion proves optimal for thermal and structural analysis, as well as mechanical testing.
