Abstract:Connection reliability is one important service level agreement (SLA) parameter for a customer and should be carefully considered in survivable WDM networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and simultaneously benefit a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of shared risk link group (SRLG) failures, a novel dynamic differentiated shared path-protection algorithm (DDSP) in WDM mesh networks is proposed. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and partial SRLGdisjoint protection, DDSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DDSP not only can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers, but also can achieve significant performance gain and lead to remarkable reduction in blocking probability.

Abstract:Deterministic Networking (DetNet) provides end-to-end absolute delay and loss guarantee to serve real-time applications. DetNet is focused on a general approach that use techniques such as 1) data plane resources reservation for DetNet flows; 2) providing fixed path for DetNet flows; 3)sequentializng, replicating, and eliminating duplicate packets transmission [draft-ietf-detnet- architecture-00] to guarantee the worst case delay of DetNet flow while allow sharing among best effort traffic. Data flow information model is important to the DetNet work that it defines information be used by flow establishment and control protocols. This document describes and DetNet flow information model that represents the flow identifier, traffic description information so that can make resource reservation and provide differentiate service.

Abstract:Deterministic Networking (DetNet) aims to provide an end-to-end ultra-reliable data network with ultra-low latency and jitter. However, implementing DetNet in wireless networks, particularly in the air interface, still faces the challenge of guaranteeing bounded delay. This paper proposes a delay-guaranteed three-layer scheduling framework for DetNet, named Deterministic Guarantee Scheduling (DGS). The top layer calculates the amount of new data entering the queue in each scheduling period and timestamps the data to track its arrival time. Based on the remaining waiting time of each flow’s data volume, the middle layer proposes a scheduling algorithm based on urgency, prioritizing the scheduling of data volumes with the shortest remaining queuing time. The lower layer fine-tunes the scheduling results obtained by the middle layer for actual transmission. We implemented the DGS framework on the 5G-air-simulator platform. Simulation results demonstrate that DGS outperforms all other mechanisms by guaranteeing delay for a larger number of deterministic flows and achieving better throughput performance.

Abstract:In the Software-defined networking（SDN）,when multiple control domains are used in control services,the transient state problem can occur causing the service flow interruption when border switches are updated asynchronously. We analyze the uniqueness of this problem for SDN, and propose a light-weight protocol for safe reconfiguration of the border switches in order to improve the availability of the services running in SDN. Our solution is designed as a generic supervision layer added in the control plane to support different types of services. To demonstrate the benefits, we implement a prototype of Informationcentric networks（ICN） with the protocol, and conduct experiments using Planet Lab. The results show the ICN service can continuously serve high volume requests for contents despite the congestions built by the heavy background traffic. The performance gains in terms of the mean and standard deviation of the content retrieve delay are40.5% and 21.56%.

Abstract:As a critical enabler of the next generation networks, network slicing can dynamically and flexibly create virtual networks leveraging necessary network resources for services with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. To satisfy the strict QoS requirements of some vertical industries, e.g., industry automation, the Deterministic Networking (DetNet) concept has been recently proposed to investigate deterministic service provisioning with bounds on service latency, loss, and jitter. A critical issue for providing deterministic services is how to allocate the right amount of resources that ensures the QoS requirements within a network slice. In this paper, we first obtain the amount of network resources needed for a network slice, using the stochastic network calculus (SNC) method, to ensure the end-to-end latency requirement under specific traffic demands. We then study the network slice deployment problem in an IP-over-WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) metro aggregation network and propose a heuristic with three different objectives: minimizing traffic hops, minimizing lightpaths and minimizing wavelengths, which can help network service provider to optimize network deployment under different considerations. The simulation results show the comparison of the resource utilization under different strategies.

Abstract:Driven by the continuous growth of network demands, Large-scale Deterministic Network (LDN) has been proposed to deliver deterministic services with improved latency and jitter, zero packet loss, configurable bandwidth, and high reliability across a broad geographical area. LDN serves as a bridge for businesses to connect and share information across different sectors with high-quality and customized network services. However, the conveyance of massive flows with stringent demands in a large topology poses technical challenges to LDN architecture, scheduling mechanisms, and operation methodologies. To shed light on the possible avenues for these issues, this article provides a comprehensive survey of LDN architecture and enabling technologies. The study begins with an overview of typical LDN architectures, including definitions, standards, and mechanisms, followed by an examination of the key technologies that support the LDN’s performance characteristics and implementation processes. Additionally, a case study of LDN scheduling is presented illustrating its application in heavy-traffic scenarios. Finally, this article outlines the open challenges and future directions in this field, highlighting areas of potential growth and development.
Efficient Routing Algorithm Design for Large DetNet

Abstract:Deterministic Networking (DetNet) is a rising technology that offers deterministic delay \& jitter and zero packet loss regardless of failures in large IP networks. In order to support DetNet, we must be able to find a set of low-cost routing paths for a given node pair subject to delay-range constraints. Unfortunately, the \textbf{Delay-Range} Constrained Routing (DRCR) problem is NP-Complete. Existing routing approaches either cannot support the delay-range constraints, or incur extremely high computational complexity. We propose Pulse$+$, a highly scalable and efficient DRCR problem solver. Pulse$+$ adopts a branch-and-bound methodology and optimizes its pruning strategies for higher efficiency. We also integrate Pulse$+$ with a divide-and-conquer approach and propose CoSE-Pulse$+$ to find a pair of active/backup paths that meet DetNet's delay-range and delay-diff constraints. Both Pulse$+$ and CoSE-Pulse$+$ offer optimality guarantee. Notably, although Pulse$+$ and CoSE-Pulse$+$ do not have a polynomial worst-case time complexity, their empirical performance is superior. We evaluate Pulse$+$ and CoSE-Pulse$+$ against the K-Shorst-Path and Lagrangian-dual based algorithms using synthetic test cases generated over networks with thousands of nodes and links. Both Pulse$+$ and CoSE-Pulse$+$ achieve significant speedup. To enable reproduction, we open source our code and test cases at [1].

Abstract:With the development of new Internet services such as computation-intensive and delay-sensitive tasks, the traditional "Best Effort" network transmission mode has been greatly challenged. The network system is urgently required to provide end-to-end transmission determinacy and computing determinacy for new applications to ensure the safe and efficient operation of services. Based on the research of the convergence of computing and networking, a new network paradigm named deterministic computing power networking (Det-CPN) is proposed. In this article, we firstly introduce the research advance of computing power networking. And then the motivations and scenarios of Det-CPN are analyzed. Following that, we present the system architecture, technological capabilities, workflow as well as key technologies for Det-CPN. Finally, the challenges and future trends of Det-CPN are analyzed and discussed.

Integrating Deterministic Networking with 5G

Abstract:The rising prevalence of real-time applications that require deterministic communication over mobile networks necessitates the joint operation of both mobile and fixed network components. This joint operation requires designing components that interact between the two technologies to provide users with latency and packet loss guarantees. In this work, we demonstrate a fully integrated 5G-DetNet that can guarantee the end-to-end demands of different flows. Moreover, we show how such a network can be implemented using low-cost hardware and open-source software, making it accessible to many 5G testbeds. The features demonstrated in this work are a network manager that does the routing and scheduling, an application function in the 5G core that interfaces with the network manager, and a network-side translator for user-plane management and de-jittering of the real-time streams.

Abstract:Generalized SRv6 network programming defines the enhanced mechanisms of SRv6 to encode SRv6 SIDs, Compressed SIDs and even the MPLS labels or IPv4 tunnel information in a single SRH. This type of SRH is called Generalized SRH (G-SRH), which can reduce the overhead of SRv6 and also provide more flexibility for network programming. This document defines the encapsulation and packet processing of G-SRH.

Abstract:Emerging long-range industrial IoT applications (e.g., remote patient monitoring) have increasingly higher requirements for global deterministic delay. Although many existing methods have built deterministic networks in small-scale networks through centralized computing and resource reservation, they cannot be applied on a global scale. The emerging mega-constellations enable new opportunities for realizing deterministic delay globally. As one constellation (e.g., Starlink) might be managed by a single operator (e.g., SpaceX), packets can be routed within deterministic number of hops. Moreover, the path diversity brought by the highly symmetrical network structure in mega-constellations can help to construct a congestion free network by routing. This paper leverages these unique characteristics of mega-constellations to avoid the traditional network congestion caused by multiple inputs and single output, and to determine the routing hops, and thus realizing a global deterministic network (DetSpace). The model based on the 2D Markov chain theoretically verifies the correctness of DetSpace. The effectiveness of DetSpace in different traffic load conditions is also verified by extensive simulations.

Abstract:The popularity of delay-sensitive applications has been rapidly evolving in recent years. However, the current Internet is not well designed to support the delivery of such traffic. The SRD (Stochastic Rate-Delay) services proposed in this paper empower a user to choose either a higher transmission rate or a low queuing delay at a congested network link. While average low delay remains guaranteed, the delay constraint is allowed to violate occasionally. The implementation enforces the intended service differentiation via link scheduling and sizing of the buffer. We build a model using stochastic network calculus to analyze the SRD services proposal and shed light on its fundamental characteristics quantitatively.

Abstract:Along with the increasing demand for latencysensitive services and applications, Deterministic Network (DetNet) concept has been recently proposed to investigate deterministic latency assurance for services featured with bounded latency requirements in 5G edge networks. The Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technology enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to flexibly place Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) achieving performance and cost benefits. Then, Service Function Chains (SFC) are formed by steering traffic through a series of VNF instances in a predefined order. Moreover, the required network resources and placement of VNF instances along SFC should be optimized to meet the deterministic latency requirements. Therefore, it is significant for ISPs to determine an optimal SFC deployment strategy to ensure network performance while improving the network revenue. In this paper, we jointly investigate the resource allocation and SFC placement in 5G edge networks for deterministic latency assurance. We formulate this problem as a mathematic programming model with the objective of maximizing the overall network profit for ISP. Furthermore, a novel Deterministic SFC deployment (Det-SFCD) algorithm is proposed to efficiently embed SFC requests with deterministic latency assurance. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide better performance in terms of SFC request acceptance rate, network cost reduction, and network resource efficiency compared with benchmark strategy.

Abstract:In this article, we proposed a two-stage deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based deterministic scheduling architecture for computing and networking convergence, named as DetCNCS. By designing DRL algorithms for task offloading and global resource allocation, we achieved maximum utilizations of computing resources and deterministic end-to-end transmission with bounded latency.

Abstract:Software Defined Networking (SDN) scheme decouples centralized control logic from data plane forwarding primitives. Openflow as a SDN implementation offers flexible flow control in SDN-based autonomous networks, and has been applied to enterprise networks and cloud data center networks. It has less effort to spread SDN control scheme over the Internet to conquer the ossification of the interdomain routing. In this paper, we propose a Software defined inter-domain Routing Plane (SRP). It can support flexible inter-domain routing policy, and create new business relationships between ASes, based on multiple match fields of IP header. It also provides forwarding path diagnosis, and interface between routing service and customers. We discuss its incremental deployment and challenges.

Abstract:Destination IP prefix-based routing protocols are core to Internet routing today. Internet autonomous systems (AS) possess fixed IP prefixes, while packets carry the intended destination AS's prefix in their headers, in clear text. As a result, network communications can be easily identified using IP addresses and become targets of a wide variety of attacks, such as DNS/IP filtering, distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, etc. In this work, we explore an alternative network architecture that fundamentally removes such vulnerabilities by disassociating the relationship between IP prefixes and destination networks, and by allowing any end-to-end communication session to have dynamic, short-lived, and pseudo-random IP addresses drawn from a range of IP prefixes rather than one. The concept is seemingly impossible to realize in todays Internet. We demonstrate how this is doable today with three different strategies using software defined networking (SDN), and how this can be done at scale to transform the Internet addressing and routing paradigms with the novel concept of a distributed software defined Internet exchange (SDX). The solution works with both IPv4 and IPv6, whereas the latter provides higher degrees of IP addressing freedom. Prototypes based on OpenvSwitches (OVS) have been implemented for experimentation across the PEERING BGP testbed. The SDX solution not only provides a technically sustainable pathway towards large-scale traffic analysis resistant network (TARN) support, it also unveils a new business model for customer driven, customizable and trustable end-to-end network services.

Abstract:Kubernetes is the leading platform for orchestrating containerized applications. In this paper, we extend Kubernetes networking to make use of SRv6, a feature-rich overlay networking mechanism. Integration with SRv6 can be very beneficial when Kubernetes is used in large-scale and distributed multi-datacenter scenarios. We have focused on the Calico CNI plugin, one of the most used Kubernetes networking plugins. In particular, we consider Calico-VPP, a version of the Calico plugin based on the VPP (Vector Packet Processing) data plane, which provides support for SRv6 operations with very high performance. The proposed SRv6 overlay networking solution for Kubernetes offers several advantages compared to a traditional overlay (e.g. IP in IP), in particular the possibility to use Traffic Engineering for the overlay tunnels. In the paper, we provide the architecture and the detailed design of the SRv6 based overlay and describe our open source implementation. We consider the research and technological question on how to extend Kubernetes networking to support large-scale and distributed multi-datacenter scenarios, which is an important goal for Cloud and Network providers. In this respect, we compare two different solutions for the control plane architecture of the SRv6 capable Kubernetes networking plugin, one based on the BGP routing protocol and another one based on extending the Kubernetes control plane. Finally, we report a performance evaluation of the data plane of the proposed SRv6 overlay networking, showing that it has comparable performance to existing overlay solutions (e.g. IP in IP), while offering a richer set of features.

Abstract:Fixed and mobile telecom operators, enterprise network operators and cloud providers strive to face the challenging demands coming from the evolution of IP networks (e.g. huge bandwidth requirements, integration of billions of devices and millions of services in the cloud). Proposed in the early 2010s, Segment Routing (SR) architecture helps face these challenging demands, and it is currently being adopted and deployed. SR architecture is based on the concept of source routing and has interesting scalability properties, as it dramatically reduces the amount of state information to be configured in the core nodes to support complex services. SR architecture was first implemented with the MPLS dataplane and then, quite recently, with the IPv6 dataplane (SRv6). IPv6 SR architecture (SRv6) has been extended from the simple steering of packets across nodes to a general network programming approach, making it very suitable for use cases such as Service Function Chaining and Network Function Virtualization. In this paper we present a tutorial and a comprehensive survey on SR technology, analyzing standardization efforts, patents, research activities and implementation results. We start with an introduction on the motivations for Segment Routing and an overview of its evolution and standardization. Then, we provide a tutorial on Segment Routing technology, with a focus on the novel SRv6 solution. We discuss the standardization efforts and the patents providing details on the most important documents and mentioning other ongoing activities. We then thoroughly analyze research activities according to a taxonomy. We have identified 8 main categories during our analysis of the current state of play: Monitoring, Traffic Engineering, Failure Recovery, Centrally Controlled Architectures, Path Encoding, Network Programming, Performance Evaluation and Miscellaneous...
