Abstract:Fixed and mobile telecom operators, enterprise network operators and cloud providers strive to face the challenging demands coming from the evolution of IP networks (e.g. huge bandwidth requirements, integration of billions of devices and millions of services in the cloud). Proposed in the early 2010s, Segment Routing (SR) architecture helps face these challenging demands, and it is currently being adopted and deployed. SR architecture is based on the concept of source routing and has interesting scalability properties, as it dramatically reduces the amount of state information to be configured in the core nodes to support complex services. SR architecture was first implemented with the MPLS dataplane and then, quite recently, with the IPv6 dataplane (SRv6). IPv6 SR architecture (SRv6) has been extended from the simple steering of packets across nodes to a general network programming approach, making it very suitable for use cases such as Service Function Chaining and Network Function Virtualization. In this paper we present a tutorial and a comprehensive survey on SR technology, analyzing standardization efforts, patents, research activities and implementation results. We start with an introduction on the motivations for Segment Routing and an overview of its evolution and standardization. Then, we provide a tutorial on Segment Routing technology, with a focus on the novel SRv6 solution. We discuss the standardization efforts and the patents providing details on the most important documents and mentioning other ongoing activities. We then thoroughly analyze research activities according to a taxonomy. We have identified 8 main categories during our analysis of the current state of play: Monitoring, Traffic Engineering, Failure Recovery, Centrally Controlled Architectures, Path Encoding, Network Programming, Performance Evaluation and Miscellaneous...

Qos Provisioning In An Enhanced Fmipv6 Architecture

Abstract:Mobility management and QoS provisioning are both key techniques in the future wireless mobile networks. In this paper we propose a framework for supporting QoS under an enhanced "Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6" (FMIPv6) architecture. By introducing the key entity called "Crossover Router" (CR), we shorten the length of packet forwarding path before the MN completes binding update. For QoS guarantee, we extend the FBU and HI messages to inform the NAR of the MN's QoS requirement and make advance resource reservation along the possible future-forwarding path before the MN attaches to the NAR's link. We keep RSVP states in the intermediate routers along overlapped path unchanged to reduce reservation hops and signaling delays. The Performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme for QoS guarantee has lower signaling cost and latency of reservation re-establishment, as well as less bandwidth requirements in comparison with MRSVP.

Abstract:Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) has been proposed to support host mobility in the next generation mobile networks. With the development of various multimedia applications, the requirement for QoS guarantee in such systems is coming. In this paper we first present an overview of RSVP extensions for reserving resources in mobile networks. We divide existing researches into four aspects: management of resource reservation, re-establishment of reservation path, design of mobile agent and integration of RSVP and mobility management. For each scheme we describe the basic idea and make comments on the advantages and disadvantages. Then we propose a QoS guarantee scheme in Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6) architecture, using some mechanisms mentioned previously. Finally we draw the conclusion and present some future work.

Abstract:Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 protocol (F-HMIPv6) reduces handover latency and packet loss significantly, which are always intolerant in the basic Mobile IPv6 protocol (MIPv6). How to provide QoS guarantee for the real-time and multimedia applications under this newly defined architecture remains an open issue. We have proposed an advance reservation mechanism for F-HMIPv6. However, the paper mainly considered intra-domain handover of the mobile node. In this paper we propose a QoS provisioning scheme for the case that the mobile performs inter-domain handover. We make use of a special router, called "Crossover Router", to reduce reservation hops and signaling delays when the mobile intends to set up a new RSVP path from the new domain. Simulation results show that the proposal significantly reduces the latency of RSVP renegotiation.

Abstract:Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) has been proposed to support seamless handover among subnets in the next generation Internet. Providing QoS guarantee in such networks is a challenging task. In this paper we propose a scheme for QoS guarantee under Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (F-HMIPv6) architecture. We extend certain handover messages to carry the QoS requirement of mobile node (MN) and enable mobility anchor point (MAP) or new access router (NAR) to make resource reservation on behalf of the MN in advance. Furthermore, only the reservation along the path between MAP and MN need to be re-established when the MN performs intra-domain handover. If the MN enters a new MAP domain, forwarding path through previous MAP and reservation along it would keep active until the MN completes binding update. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme provides lower signaling cost and reservation latency, as well as less bandwidth requirement than MRSVP.

Abstract:Kubernetes is the leading platform for orchestrating containerized applications. In this paper, we extend Kubernetes networking to make use of SRv6, a feature-rich overlay networking mechanism. Integration with SRv6 can be very beneficial when Kubernetes is used in large-scale and distributed multi-datacenter scenarios. We have focused on the Calico CNI plugin, one of the most used Kubernetes networking plugins. In particular, we consider Calico-VPP, a version of the Calico plugin based on the VPP (Vector Packet Processing) data plane, which provides support for SRv6 operations with very high performance. The proposed SRv6 overlay networking solution for Kubernetes offers several advantages compared to a traditional overlay (e.g. IP in IP), in particular the possibility to use Traffic Engineering for the overlay tunnels. In the paper, we provide the architecture and the detailed design of the SRv6 based overlay and describe our open source implementation. We consider the research and technological question on how to extend Kubernetes networking to support large-scale and distributed multi-datacenter scenarios, which is an important goal for Cloud and Network providers. In this respect, we compare two different solutions for the control plane architecture of the SRv6 capable Kubernetes networking plugin, one based on the BGP routing protocol and another one based on extending the Kubernetes control plane. Finally, we report a performance evaluation of the data plane of the proposed SRv6 overlay networking, showing that it has comparable performance to existing overlay solutions (e.g. IP in IP), while offering a richer set of features.

Abstract:Generalized SRv6 network programming defines the enhanced mechanisms of SRv6 to encode SRv6 SIDs, Compressed SIDs and even the MPLS labels or IPv4 tunnel information in a single SRH. This type of SRH is called Generalized SRH (G-SRH), which can reduce the overhead of SRv6 and also provide more flexibility for network programming. This document defines the encapsulation and packet processing of G-SRH.

Abstract:Nowadays, cloud computing networks significantly benefit the deployment of new services and have become one infrastructure provider in the digital society. The virtual extensible local area network (VxLAN), which belongs to the network schemes to overlay Layer 2 over Layer 3, is one of the most popular methods to realize cloud computing networks. Though VxLAN partially overcomes the capacity limitation of its predecessor virtual local area network, it still faces several challenges like annoying signaling overhead during the multicast period and interrupted communication with a migrating virtual machine (VM). In this paper, we propose a new software defined network (SDN) based VxLAN network architecture. Based on this architecture, we address how we can deploy an intelligent center to enhance the multicast capability and facilitate the VM migration. Besides, we discuss the means to update the global information and guarantee the communication continuum. Finally, we use Mininet to emulate this SDN based VxLAN architecture and demonstrate effective load balancing results. In a word, this proposed architecture could provide a blueprint for future cloud computing networks.

Abstract:Segment Routing (SR) is a source routing paradigm which is widely used in Traffic Engineering (TE). By using SR, a node steers a packet through an ordered list of instructions called segments. By some extensions of interior gateway protocol, SR can be applied to IP/MPLS or IPv6 network without signal protocol. SR over IPv6 (SRv6) is attracting wide attention because of its interoperation ability with IPv6. However, upgrading the existing IPv6 network directly to a full SRv6 one can be difficult, because large-scale equipment replacement or software upgrade may cause economic and technical problems. TE in partially deployed SR network is becoming a hot research topic. In this paper, we propose the TE algorithm Weight Adjustment-SRTE (WA-SRTE) in partially deployed SRv6 network, in which SRv6 capable nodes are dispersedly deployed. Our objective is to minimize the network's maximum link utilization. WA-SRTE converts the TE problem into a Deep Reinforcement Learning problem and optimizes the OSPF weight, SRv6 node deployment and traffic paths simultaneously. Besides, traffic variation is also considered and we use a representative Traffic Matrix (TM) to epitomize the traffic characteristics over a period of time. Experiments demonstrate that with 20% to 40% of the SRv6 nodes deployed, we can achieve TE performance as good as in a full SR network for the experiment topologies. The results with WA remarkably outperform the results without it. Our algorithm also gets near-optimal results with changing traffic.

Abstract:Network services are an important component of the Internet, which are used to expand network functions for third-party developers. Network function virtualization (NFV) can improve the speed and flexibility of network service deployment. However, with the evolution of the network, network service layout may become inefficient. Regarding this problem, this paper proposes a service chain migration (SCM) method with the framework of "software defined network + network function virtualization" (SDN+NFV), which migrates service chains to adapt to network evolution and improves the efficiency of the network service layout. SCM is modeled as an integer linear programming problem and resolved via particle swarm optimization. An SCM prototype system is designed based on an SDN controller. Experiments demonstrate that SCM could reduce the network traffic cost and energy consumption efficiently.
SRv6-INT: Runtime Monitoring for Green Service Function Chaining in B5G-MEC.

Abstract:Runtime re-optimization of service function chains (SFCs) has been considered as a must-have feature to enable cost-effective SFC provisioning for the multi-access edge computing (MEC) in beyond 5G (B5G) networks. Therefore, in this work, we propose SRv6-INT, which time-multiplexes the fields of segment routing over IPv6 (SRv6) and in-band network telemetry (INT) in packets to monitor and adjust SFCs timely and efficiently. We also prototype a closed-loop network control and management (NC&M) system based on SRv6-INT to re-optimize SFC provisioning in runtime for precisely balancing the tradeoff between quality-of-service (QoS) and energy usage of SFCs. Experimental results show that with SRv6-INT, the provisioning of SFCs can be adjusted in runtime to save switch ports and CPU frequency, leading to effective energy-saving without QoS violation.

SR-TPP: Extending IPv6 Segment Routing to Enable Trusted and Private Network Paths

Abstract:A trusted network path is a desired property of the Internet. Previous works introduced new protocol headers based on source routing for source authentication and path verification. It is obvious that any extra protocol headers will increase the network burden, and network path privacy deserves attention, especially when we use source routing. The emergence of IPv6 Segment Routing (SRv6) may bring the opportunity to assemble trusted network paths with a lightweight header. In this paper, we propose SR-TPP, a novel mechanism based on SRv6 to support network path verification meanwhile hides both-end and path information. Different from existing works, SR-TPP extends SRv6 function instead of introducing a new protocol header to meet the requirement of path compliance. Path information is sequentially encoded into the segment list in SR-TPP so that path information is partially visible to each intermediate router. The distributed verification of SR-TPP also makes it easier to locate faults. Finally, the security analysis and evaluation show that SR-TPP can assemble private and trusted network paths with acceptable performance.

Abstract:We have entered the transitional period between IPv4 and IPv6. However, IPv6 transition management involves entirely new challenges. To tackle these management challenges, we propose a management architecture (VNET6) to improve IPv6 transition manageability. Compared with the traditional network management architecture, VNET6 presents four different aspects: network layer virtualization for IPv4/IPv6 coexistence, service abstraction for IPv6 transition technologies, dynamic and autonomic management manner and end-to-end communication guarantee over heterogeneous networks. The implementation and evaluation demonstrate that VNET6 is a distributed enabler for the dynamic and autonomic management of IPv6 transition. This enabler facilitates incremental IPv6 deployment and simplifies the management of IPv4/IPv6 coexistence. Meanwhile, this enabler can effectively ensure application's end-to-end communication across multiple heterogeneous administrative domains. Especially, VNET6 makes it easier to provide performance-assured end-to-end paths for application's communication. Hence, VNET6 can improve the manageability for IPv6 transition. The manageability can facilitate IPv6 deployment and transition in a stable and manageable manner.

Abstract:The demand of real time service such as voice and video applications in mobile IPv6 requires new solutions to the problems of Quality of Service. To provide end-to-end, flow based QoS in a mobile environment, there must be a proper deployable QoS architecture. A scalable De-Centralized Hierarchical Mobility IPv6 Managed QoS Architecture is proposed. The basic elements, the deployment of the architecture, and the concrete interaction in applications are described. The analysis and the simulation results showed the feasibility of the architecture and its advantages such as higher extensible ability, smaller handover delay and data transfer delay.
Optimizing Network Service Continuity with Quality-Driven Resource Migration

Abstract:Despite advances in security technology, it is impractical to entirely prevent intrusion threats. Consequently, developing effective service migration strategies is crucial to maintaining the continuity of network services. Current service migration strategies initiate the migration process only upon detecting a loss of service functionality in the nodes, which increases the risk of service interruptions. Moreover, the migration decision-making process has not adequately accounted for the alignment between tasks and node resources, thereby amplifying the risk of system overload. To address these shortcomings, we introduce a Quality-Driven Resource Migration Strategy (QD-RMS). Specifically, QD-RMS initiates the migration process at an opportune moment, determined through an analysis of service quality. Subsequently, it employs a method combining Pareto optimality and the simulated annealing algorithm to identify the node most suitable for migration. This approach not only guarantees seamless service continuity but also ensures optimal resource distribution and load balancing. The experiments demonstrate that, in comparison with conventional migration strategies, QD-RMS achieves superior service quality and an approximate 20% increase in maximum task capacity. This substantiates the strategic superiority and technological advancement of the proposed strategy.

SRP: Building a Software Defined Inter-domain Routing Plane via SDN

Abstract:Software Defined Networking (SDN) scheme decouples centralized control logic from data plane forwarding primitives. Openflow as a SDN implementation offers flexible flow control in SDN-based autonomous networks, and has been applied to enterprise networks and cloud data center networks. It has less effort to spread SDN control scheme over the Internet to conquer the ossification of the interdomain routing. In this paper, we propose a Software defined inter-domain Routing Plane (SRP). It can support flexible inter-domain routing policy, and create new business relationships between ASes, based on multiple match fields of IP header. It also provides forwarding path diagnosis, and interface between routing service and customers. We discuss its incremental deployment and challenges.

Abstract:Self-adaptation of service function chains (SFCs) has been considered as an important attribute to ensure the resource-efficiency and reliability of network function virtualization (NFV) systems. In this work, we leverage the idea of integrating segment routing over IPv6 (SRv6) and in-band network telemetry (INT) seamlessly to realize SRv6-INT and explore the mutual benefits of SRv6 and INT for achieving self-adaptive SFC deployment. Specifically, we design and experimentally demonstrate a self-adaptive SRv6-INT-driven SFC deployment system that orchestrates network and IT resources timely to adapt to bursty traffic and network changes. We first enhance our previous design of SRv6-INT to better use it for self-adaptive SFC deployment, and then propose an IT resource management technique for Kubernetes (K8s) to accomplish resource allocation and contention resolution without offline virtual network function (vNF) profiling. Next, a closed-loop system is designed to manage SFCs in both the local and global ways. As for the local way, we let servers make local decisions based on the INT data encoded in packets to scale the vNFs running on them vertically. The global way involves the control plane, which oversees the SFC deployment in the whole network to change the number and placement of vNFs and the traffic routing through them. Finally, we prototype our proposal with commodity servers and hardware PDP switches based on Tofino ASICs, and experimentally demonstrate its effectiveness.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new load-balancing method that supports Per-Connection Consistency (PCC) by leveraging ECMP with standardized routing protocols for operational simplicity. Load balancers must consistently deliver packets of a flow to one of the backend servers, even when the backend server pool changes. Achieving this property—PCC—is not a straightforward task and usually introduces additional complexity into networks, such as special packet forwarding mechanisms, synchronizing states across load balancers, and often complicated orchestration. Our approach, VRF-shadowing, achieves PCC on ECMP of routers without additional control plane systems by exploiting Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6). VRF-shadowing employs the daisy-chaining concept, achieving PCC in a stateless manner with a standardized SRv6-based Layer-3 VPN (L3VPN). VRF-shadowing is composed of two components: a minimal new feature for software of SRv6 routers and a new SRv6 End behavior at servers. We implemented the former in a commercial router and the latter in Linux and evaluated VRF-shadowing on an SRv6 L3VPN network built with only standardized routing protocols. The evaluation results demonstrate that VRF-shadowing preserves connections from being disrupted when the ECMP next-hops change. In the most severe scenario, VRF-shadowing reduced the failed HTTP requests rate from 77% to 0.7% compared to traditional ECMP.

Stateless Mapping and Multiplexing of IPv4 Addresses in Migration to IPv6 Internet

Abstract:IPv4 addresses will be soon exhausted while more and more users are pouring into the Internet. It is commonly understood that IPv6 is definitely necessary for connecting new users, but lack of resources in current IPv6 world discourages providers from developing their IPv6 market. Address and packet translations are considered necessary for Internet content resources migrating from IPv4 world to IPv6, but up to now there is no one translation approach scalable enough. We understand the scalability is essentially restricted by the states in routing and those in translation, and accordingly we propose a novel architecture, called IVI, where IPv6 subscriber addresses are mapped from IPv4 with a certain rule that keeps IPv6 routing table well aggregated and makes translation stateless at all. Moreover, we introduce multiplex into the mapping to accommodate the trend of IPv4 addresses being more and more precious. Analysis based on real traffic data proves that the proposed approach is feasible to be deployed by an ISP for its customer networks and the potential degradation in end-to-end performance is acceptable.
