Abstract:
Waterborne epoxy resin (EP) is often used as anticorrosive coating in the industrial field. However, small holes and gaps can be formed during the curing process. The corrosive medium easily penetrates the anticorrosive coating and corrodes the metal matrix. Herein, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and graphene oxide (GO) were doped into EP to improve the shielding and resistance to corrosive media. The composite coatings were prepared successfully by solution blending method. In the PVP/GO composite materials, original spatial structure of GO was changed and the composite was mainly combined by covalent bonding. The surface morphology of hybrid filler was flat and uniform, and the structural defects of GO was reduced. Compared with single‐layer anticorrosive coating, the corrosion potential of PVP/GO/EP coating moved forward and the corrosion current density decreased. The ideal corrosion resistance of PVP/GO/EP composite coatings was mainly because agglomeration of GO sheet was obviously avoided after it was modified by PVP. Furthermore, the hybrid filler can be uniformly dispersed in the aqueous EP. It blocked the gaps and holes inside the coatings, which could contribute to form anticorrosive coatings.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to address is the issue of small pores and gaps formed in waterborne epoxy resin (EP) coatings during the curing process, which allow corrosive media to easily penetrate the anti-corrosion coating and corrode the metal substrate. By incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and graphene oxide (GO) into the waterborne epoxy resin, the aim is to improve the coating's barrier properties and resistance to corrosive media. Specifically, the paper investigates the preparation and anti-corrosion performance of PVP/GO/EP composite coatings. PVP/GO composites were prepared by solution blending and then incorporated into the waterborne epoxy resin to successfully prepare PVP/GO/EP composite coatings. The study shows that the introduction of PVP/GO composites significantly improves the anti-corrosion performance of the coatings, mainly in the following aspects: 1. **Reduction of Defects**: The aggregation phenomenon of GO sheets modified by PVP is significantly reduced, resulting in more uniform dispersion, effectively filling the pores and cracks in the coating. 2. **Improved Barrier Properties**: The addition of PVP/GO composites extends the diffusion path of electrolyte penetration, slowing down the mass transfer process of interfacial corrosion particles. 3. **Enhanced Mechanical Properties**: The addition of PVP/GO composites enhances the bending strength and mechanical stability of the coating, inhibiting the propagation of cracks and the diffusion of corrosive media. The anti-corrosion performance of the composite coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel curves, and an equivalent circuit diagram was established to analyze the anti-corrosion mechanism of the composite coatings. The results show that the PVP/GO/EP composite coating has the highest corrosion potential and the lowest corrosion current density, with an anti-corrosion efficiency of 94.69%.
