Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:We study anti-symmetric solutions to nonlinear equations $$(-\Delta )^su=u^p$$ involving fractional Laplacian operators of order 2s. First, in the often used defining space $$L_{2s}$$ , we establish a Liouvill type theorem. Some suitable forms of maximum principles and some subtle lower bounds of the solutions are the key ingredients here. Second, observing the anti-symmetric property of the solutions, we extend the usual defining space $$L_{2s}$$ for $$(-\Delta )^s$$ to $$L_{2s+1}$$ . It is very interesting to see the existence of solutions in the expanded and somewhat more natural space. In fact, we show the existence of non-trivial solutions when $$p+2s <1$$ and the nonexistence when $$p+2s>1$$ . Finding a suitable super-solution is an important step in constructing non-trivial solutions.

Abstract:This paper concerns the following coupled fractional nonlinear system {(-Delta)(s) u + lambda a(x)u = p/p + q vertical bar u vertical bar(p-2) u vertical bar v vertical bar(q), x is an element of R-N, (-Delta)(s) v + lambda b(x)v = p/p + q vertical bar u vertical bar(p) u vertical bar v vertical bar(q-2)v, x is an element of R-N, where (-Delta)(s) (0 < s < 1) is the fractional Laplacian, lambda > 0 is a parameter. With the help of some methods of nonlinear functional analysis and partial differential equations, we prove the multiplicity and concentration of solutions for the coupled fractional nonlinear system. We would like to point out that, in this paper, the potentials could not be bounded from below by positive constants. We even allow that one of the potentials goes to zero as vertical bar x vertical bar -> infinity provided the other one goes to infinity at an appropriated rate. Moreover, as there exists ambiguity in the process of tackling coupled elliptic system, so we make a delicate analysis on the intersection set Omega by considering a new associated problem.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study positive solutions of the following system of integral equations in R n : with Under the natural integrability conditions u ∈ L p+1(R n ) and v ∈ L q+1(R n ), we prove that all the solutions are radially symmetric and monotonic decreasing about some point. To prove this result, we introduce an integral form of the method of moving planes that is quite different from the traditional method of moving planes for PDEs. By using the method of moving spheres, we obtain the classification results of the solutions in the system.

Abstract:Nonlinear fractional difference equations are studied deeply and extensively by many scientists by using fixed-point theorems on different types of function spaces. In this study, we combine fixed-point theory with a set of falling fractional functions in a Banach space to prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions of a class of fractional difference equations. The most important part of this article is devoted to correcting a significant mistake made in the literature in using the power rule by providing further conditions for its validity. Also, we provide specific conditions under which difference equations have attractive solutions and the solutions are also asymptotically stable. Furthermore, we construct some fractional difference examples in order to illustrate the validity of the observed results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a kind of higher-order nonlinear fractional differential equation with integral boundary condition. The fractional differential operator here is the Caputo's fractional derivative. By means of fixed point theorems, the existence and multiplicity results of positive solutions are obtained. Furthermore, some examples given here illustrate that the results are almost sharp.

Abstract:It is well known that investigation on exact solutions of nonlinear fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) is a very difficult work compared with integer‐order nonlinear PDEs. In this paper, based on the separation method of semifixed variables and integral bifurcation method, a combinational method is proposed. By using this new method, a class of generalized time‐fractional thin‐film equations are studied. Under two kinds of definitions of fractional derivatives, exact solutions of two generalized time‐fractional thin‐film equations are investigated respectively. Different kinds of exact solutions are obtained and their dynamic properties are discussed. Compared to the results in the existing references, the types of solutions obtained in this paper are abundant and very different from those in the existing references. Investigation shows that the solutions of the model defined by Riemann–Liouville differential operator converge faster than those defined by Caputo differential operator. It is also found that the profiles of some solutions are very similar to solitons, but they are not true soliton solutions. In order to visually show the dynamic properties of these solutions, the profiles of some representative exact solutions are illustrated by 3D graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following non-linear system involving the fractional Laplacian 0.1 in two different types of domains, one is bounded, and the other is an infinite cylinder, where . We employ the direct sliding method for fractional Laplacian, different from the conventional extension and moving planes methods, to derive the monotonicity of solutions for (0.1) in variable. Meanwhile, we develop a new iteration method for systems in the proofs. Hopefully, the iteration method can also be applied to solve other problems.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient numerical technique for solving multi-term linear systems of fractional ordinary differential equations (FODEs) which have been widely used in modeling various phenomena in engineering and science. An approximate solution of the system is sought in the form of the finite series over the Müntz polynomials. By using the collocation procedure in the time interval, one gets the linear algebraic system for the coefficient of the expansion which can be easily solved numerically by a standard procedure. This technique also serves as the basis for solving the time-fractional partial differential equations (PDEs). The modified radial basis functions are used for spatial approximation of the solution. The collocation in the solution domain transforms the equation into a system of fractional ordinary differential equations similar to the one mentioned above. Several examples have verified the performance of the proposed novel technique with high accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:In this talk we develop an upscaling method for the following nonlinear parabolic equation @tb(u") r · (g " (x,u") + a " (x,u")ru") = f(x,t), which stems from various applications of flow transport in porous me- dia. Our direct motivation is the Richards equation which models the flow transport in the unsaturated porous media. We provide a detailed convergence analysis of the method under the assumption that the oscil- lating coecients are periodic. While such a simplifying assumption is not required by our method, it allows us to use homogenization theory to obtain the asymptotic structure of the solutions. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the eciency and accuracy of the proposed method. This is a joint work with Weibing Deng and Huang Ye.

Abstract:The nonlinear fractional Boussinesq equations are known as the fractional differential equation class that has an important place in mathematical physics. In this study, a method called (G'G^2)-extension method which works well and reveals exact solutions is used to examine nonlinear Boussinesq equations with conformable time-fractional derivatives. This method is a very useful approach and extremely useful compared to other analytical methods. With the proposed method, there are three unique types of solutions such as hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational solutions. This approach can similarly be applied to other nonlinear fractional models.

Abstract:Consider the following elliptic system (0.1) (-Δ)u=f(u,v), (-Δ)v=g(u,v), where f and g are continuous functions and satisfy the finite total curvature conditions. Recently, Guo and Liu (2008) derived Liouville-type results for the positive solution of the semilinear elliptic system (0.1) in the whole space ℝN (N ⩾ 3). However, the case N = 2 is different and difficult because u and v may change signs. Using the method of moving spheres in the integral form combined with integral inequalities, we give a complete classification of the classical solutions to the above system in ℝ2. This seems the first result for the classification of solutions (u, v) (here u and v are not required to be positive solutions) to the critical order system (0.1) in the two-dimensional case.
