Abstract:We give a stochastic comparison and ordering of the Tracy-Widom distribution with parameter $\beta$. In particular, we show that as $\beta$ grows, the Tracy-Widom random variables get smaller modulo a multiplicative coefficient.

Abstract:We give a stochastic comparison and ordering of the largest eigenvalues, with parameter $\beta$, for Hermite $\beta$-ensembles and Laguerre $\beta$-ensembles. Taking limit, we recover a stochastic domination result for Tracy-Widom distributions obtained in \cite{VP2022}. We prove a stochastic domination result for the higher order analogues of Tracy-Widom distributions. We also generalize a few stochastic domination results from last passage percolation.

Abstract: Let $(X_i, i\in J)$ be a family of locally dependent non-negative integer-valued random variables, and consider the sum $W=\sum_{i\in J}X_i$. We establish general error upper bounds for $d_{TV}(W, M)$ using the three-parametric perturbation form of Stein operator, where the target variable $M$ is either the mixture of Poisson distribution and binomial or negative binomial distribution, and the three parameters are delicately determined by guaranteeing $M$ and $W$ are identical in the first three factorial cumulants. As applications, we discuss in detail the classic local dependence structure examples like $(1, 1)$-runs, ($k_{1},k_{2}$)-runs and $k$-runs, and attain $O(|J|^{-1})$ error bounds under some special cases by exactly figuring out the smoothness of the conditional distributions of $W$ upon partial sums. The obtained result is to some extent a significant improvement of Pek\"{o}z [Bernoulli, 19 (2013)] and Upadhye, et al. [Bernoulli, 23 (2017)].

Abstract:We compute the Tracy-Widom distribution describing the asymptotic distribution of the largest eigenvalue of a large random matrix by solving a boundary-value problem posed by Bloemendal in his Ph.D. Thesis (2011). The distribution is computed in two ways. The first method is a second-order finite-difference method and the second is a highly accurate Fourier spectral method. Since $\beta$ is simply a parameter in the boundary-value problem, any $\beta> 0$ can be used, in principle. The limiting distribution of the $n$th largest eigenvalue can also be computed. Our methods are available in the Julia package TracyWidomBeta.jl.

Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality for stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes under some conditions through the Doléans-Dade exponential formula, and then derive a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As a direct consequence, we obtain an upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals. Finally, we apply the uniform exponential bound to nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators and provide a rate of convergence in terms of Hellinger distance, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer (1995).

Abstract:Let (X1,X2,…,Xn) and (Y1,Y2,…,Yn) be gamma random vectors with common shape parameter α(0<α⩽1) and scale parameters (λ1,λ2,…,λn), (μ1,μ2,…,μn), respectively. Abstract:The exponentiated Weibull (EW) distribution is the first generalization of the two-parameter Weibull distribution to accommodate nonmonotone hazard rates, including the bathtub shaped hazard rate. In this paper, we discuss stochastic comparisons of parallel systems with exponentiated Weibull components in terms of the usual stochastic order, dispersive order and the likelihood ratio order. We give some sufficient conditions for stochastic comparisons between lifetimes of parallel systems.

Abstract:Stochastic comparison on order statistics from heterogeneous-dependent observations has been paid lots of attention recently. This paper devotes to investigating the ordering properties of order statistics from dependent observations. We derive the usual stochastic order for sample minimums and the second smallest order statistic, the dispersive order and the star order for minimums of samples having proportional hazards and Archimedean survival copulas. Similar ordering results are also obtained for maximums and the second largest order statistic of samples having proportional reversed hazards and Archimedean copulas. Several examples illustrating the main results are presented as well.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for a Poisson binomial random variable to be stochastically larger (or smaller) than a binomial random variable. It is then used to deal with the stochastic comparisons of order statistics from heterogeneous populations with those from a homogeneous population. The result has obvious applications in the stochastic comparisons of lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems having independent components.

Abstract:We propose some new results on the comparison of the minimum or maximum order statistic from a random number of non-identical random variables. Under the non-identical set-up, with certain conditions, we prove that random minimum (maximum) of one system dominates the other in hazard rate (reversed hazard rate) order. Further, we prove variation diminishing property (Karlin [8]) for all possible restrictions to derive the new results.

Abstract:The distributions of the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of a $p$-variate sample covariance matrix $S$ are of great importance in statistics. Focusing on the null case where $nS$ follows the standard Wishart distribution $W_p(I,n)$, we study the accuracy of their scaling limits under the setting: $n/p\rightarrow \gamma\in(0,\infty)$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. The limits here are the orthogonal Tracy--Widom law and its reflection about the origin. With carefully chosen rescaling constants, the approximation to the rescaled largest eigenvalue distribution by the limit attains accuracy of order ${\mathrm {O}({\min(n,p)^{-2/3}})}$. If $\gamma>1$, the same order of accuracy is obtained for the smallest eigenvalue after incorporating an additional log transform. Numerical results show that the relative error of approximation at conventional significance levels is reduced by over 50% in rectangular and over 75% in `thin' data matrix settings, even with $\min(n,p)$ as small as 2.

Abstract:This article studies the stochastic comparisons of order statistics with dependent and heterogeneous lower-truncated Weibull samples under Archimedean copula. To begin, we obtain the usual stochastic and hazard rate orders of the largest and smallest order statistics from heterogeneous and dependent lower-truncated Weibull samples under Archimedean copula. Second, under Archimedean copula, we get the convex transform and the dispersive orders of the largest and smallest order statistics from dependent and heterogeneous lower-truncated Weibull samples. Finally, several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the theoretical conclusions.

Abstract:Hermite and Laguerre $\beta$-ensembles are important and well studied models in random matrix theory with special cases $\beta=1,2,4$ corresponding to eigenvalues of classical random matrix ensembles. It is well known that the largest eigenvalues in these, under appropriate scaling, converge weakly to the Tracy-Widom $\beta$ distribution whose distribution function $F_{\beta}$ has asymptotics given by $1-F_{\beta}(x)=\exp\left(-\frac{2\beta}{3}(1+o(1))x^{3/2}\right)$ as $x\to \infty$ and $F_{\beta}(x)=\exp\left(-\frac{\beta}{24}(1+o(1))|x|^3\right)$ as $x\to -\infty$. Although tail estimates for the largest eigenvalues with correct exponents have been proved for the pre-limiting models, estimates with matching constants had not so far been established for general $\beta$; even in the exactly solvable cases, some of the bounds were missing. In this paper, we prove upper and lower moderate deviation estimates for both tails with matching constants.

We compare systems arising from taking different model parameters and obtain stochastic ordering results under the condition of multivariate chain majorization. Using the notion of vector majorization, we compare different systems and obtain stochastic ordering results.

Abstract:We study a class of stochastic Bernstein polynomials built from order statistics of identically, independently, and uniformly distributed random variables on [0, 1]. We establish a Chebyshev type inequality for the probabilistic convergence of a stochastic Bernstein polynomial sequence to its target function. This is a major improvement of the main result of Wu, Sun, and Ma [Adv. Comput. Math. 38 (2013), no. 1, pp. 187-205]. Moreover, the method we develop here in dealing with varying-weighted sums of dependent random variables is of independent interest.
