Abstract:We demonstrate a flexible multichannel fiber-based imaging Doppler spectrometer to characterize plasmas in high intensity (≥1 × 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma experiments at high repetition rates. This instrument collects data from ×21 different plasma locations combining optical fibers and a single imaging spectrometer. This diagnostic maps the plasma velocity evolution as a function of time with sub-pico-second resolution. Experimental results showing 2D velocity measurements of plasma with 20 μm spatial resolution are presented. Intensities of the order of 1018 W/cm2 were used to generate a plasma, while a much less intense, frequency doubled (400 nm), probe beam (1011 W/cm2) was used to measure the Doppler shift from the plasma critical surface. The instrument can be scaled to a larger number of channels (e.g., 100) still using a single spectrometer.

Abstract:The knowledge of absolute fluxes of reactive species such as radicals or energetic ions to the surface is crucial for understanding the growth or etching of thin films. These species have due to their high reactivity very low densities and their detection is therefore a challenging task. Mass spectrometry is a very sensitive technique and it will be demonstrated that it is a good choice for the study of plasma chemistry. Mass spectrometry measures the plasma composition directly at the surface and is not limited by existence of accessible optical transitions. When properly designed and carefully calibrated mass spectrometry provides absolute densities of the measured species. It can even measure internally excited metastable species. Here, measurement of neutral species and positive ions generated in an atmospheric pressure plasmas jet operated with He, hexamethyldisiloxane and O2 will be presented.

Abstract:In-situ measurements of space plasma throughout the solar system require high time resolution to understand the plasma's kinetic fine structure and evolution. In this context, research~is conducted to design instruments with the capability to acquire the plasma velocity distribution and its moments with high cadence. We study a new instrument design, using a constant magnetic field generated by two permanent magnets, to analyze solar wind protons and $\alpha$-particles with high time resolution. We determine the optimal configuration of the instrument in terms of aperture size, sensor position, pixel size and magnetic field strength. We conduct this analysis based on analytical calculations and SIMION simulations of the particle trajectories in our instrument. We evaluate the velocity resolution of the instrument as well as Poisson errors associated with finite counting statistics. Our instrument is able to resolve Maxwellian and $\kappa$-distributions for both protons and $\alpha$-particles. This method retrieves measurements of the moments (density, bulk speed and temperature) with a relative error below 1%. Our instrument design achieves these results with an acquisition time of only 5 ms, significantly faster than state-of-the-art electrostatic analyzers. Although the instrument only acquires one-dimensional cuts of the distribution function in velocity space, the simplicity and reliability of the presented instrument concept are two key advantages of our new design.

Abstract:We describe the development and demonstration of a high-repetition-rate-capable dual-channel (DC) x-ray spectrometer designed for high-intensity laser–plasma experiments (≥1×1021 W/cm2). The spectrometer, which operates at high repetition rates, is limited only by the refresh rate of targets and the camera’s frame rate. It features two channels, each equipped with a flat highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) crystal and a unique detector plane, allowing it to resolve two distinct x-ray bands: approximately 7–10 and 10–13 keV. Each detector plate carrier holds two slots for active (scintillators) or passive (imaging plates) x-ray detectors. We present the design and testing of the HR-DC-HOPG using both the COMET laser (10 J, 0.5 ps shot/4 min) at LLNL’s Jupiter Laser Facility and the SCARLET laser (10 J, 30 fs shot/min) at Ohio State University. The results demonstrate the spectrometer’s performance across various laser energies, target materials, pulse shapes, and detector types.

Abstract:In this manuscript we introduce a simulation tool-suite for predicting plasma-surface interactions (PSI), which aims to predict the evolution of the plasma-facing surfaces that continually change due to exposure to fusion plasmas. A comprehensive description of PSI involves a wide range of physical phenomena, of which we include components for (a) the gas implantation and its dynamic evolution below the divertor surface; (b) erosion of wall material; (c) transport and re-deposition of the eroded impurities; and (d) the scrape-off layer plasma including fuel ions and extrinsic impurities. These components are integrated to predict changes in surface morphology and fuel recycling, and the effect of material erosion and re-deposition in fuel retention. Integrated simulations for ITER-like parameters in a helium plasma environment are presented, focused on the response of the tungsten divertor. The model is also applied to predicting the response of the tungsten surface pre-damaged by He plasma, to burning plasma operations. This case further demonstrates the capability to model the effect of sub-surface helium dynamics, which include helium nucleation, clustering and the bursting of over-pressurized bubbles, its impact on fuel recycling as well as the effect of sputtering on the surface evolution.

Abstract:A hyperspectral camera (HSC-type Specim IQ) has been applied at the linear plasma device PSI-2 under steady-state conditions. The camera has the capacity of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with the dimension of a data array 512 × 512 × 204 (x, y, λ) covering the spectral span from 400 to 1000 nm with moderate average spectral resolution (FWHM ∼7 nm). After radiometric calibration and background/continuum emission subtraction, two main applications of the camera, (i) plasma diagnostics in helium (He) plasmas and (ii) plasma-material interaction studies with tungsten (W) targets in neon (Ne) plasmas, have been carried out. The measurements were complemented by a movable Langmuir double probe system (LP) measuring electron temperature (Te) and electron density (ne) in radial direction r and a fiber-coupled cross-dispersion spectrometer with high spectral resolution (Spectrelle) recording neutral He, W, and Ne emission lines over the full plasma column. (i) Two-dimensional (2D) imaging of Te and ne radial profiles in axial direction z of the He plasma column were for the first time obtained by the regression analysis of Te and ne (from LP) and six He I line ratios (from HSC). The spatially resolved plasma parameters covered in these studies range between Te ∼ 0.8-13.4 eV and ne ∼ 0.2 × 1018-3.9 × 1018 m-3 and permit a reconstruction of the plasma conditions in PSI-2 in 2D without LP perturbation. (ii) W sputtering was studied in situ in Ne plasmas exposing W target samples (negatively biased at 100 V) under perpendicular Ne plasma impact. Simultaneously, the 2D distributions of W (W I line at 429.5 nm) in front of the target and the 2D Ne plasma distribution (Ne I line at 703.2 nm) were recorded with complete spectral separation as confirmed by the Spectrelle spectrometer. This permits the simultaneous measurement of the neutral W penetration and its angular distribution induced in the sputtering process and of the impinging plasma distribution. The HSI technique offers, despite a few technical drawbacks, such as the moderate spectral resolution and poor time resolution, a new possibility to distinguish multiple emission lines from plasma and impurities and complements the portfolio of existing Optical Emission Spectroscopy techniques, providing a good compromise regarding spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution.

Abstract:X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) is a powerful diagnostic technique that involves an x-ray source interacting with a dense plasma sample, resulting in a spectrum of elastically and inelastically scattered x-rays. Depending on the plasma conditions, one can measure a range of parameters from the resulting spectrum, including plasma temperature, electron density, and ionization state. To achieve sensitivity to collective electron oscillations, XRTS measurements require limited momentum transfer where the spectral separation of elastic and inelastic scattering is small. Such measurements require an x-ray probe source with a narrow bandwidth in order to reduce the spectral overlap between scattering contributions, allowing for the different features to be more precisely deconvolved. In this investigation, we discuss the theory behind how the bandwidth for a common XRTS probe, Zn He-α emission at 9 keV, can be reduced using a Cu K-edge filter. Proof-of-principle experiments conducted at the OMEGA laser facility confirm that this is an effective method for attenuating the higher energy He-α peak in the Zn emission spectrum. Calibration measurements at the National Ignition Facility show a reduction in spectral bandwidth from 87 eV to 48 eV when using the Cu filter, which will be important to improve the spectral resolution of future XRTS measurements that will probe plasmon oscillations in strongly compressed plasmas of low-Z materials at densities of tens of g/cm3.

Abstract:This white paper submitted for 2020 Decadal Assessment of Plasma Science concerns the importance of multi-spacecraft missions to address fundamental questions concerning plasma turbulence. Plasma turbulence is ubiquitous in the universe, and it is responsible for the transport of mass, momentum, and energy in such diverse systems as the solar corona and wind, accretion discs, planet formation, and laboratory fusion devices. Turbulence is an inherently multi-scale and multi-process phenomenon, coupling the largest scales of a system to sub-electron scales via a cascade of energy, while simultaneously generating reconnecting current layers, shocks, and a myriad of instabilities and waves. The solar wind is humankind's best resource for studying the naturally occurring turbulent plasmas that permeate the universe. Since launching our first major scientific spacecraft mission, Explorer 1, in 1958, we have made significant progress characterizing solar wind turbulence. Yet, due to the severe limitations imposed by single point measurements, we are unable to characterize sufficiently the spatial and temporal properties of the solar wind, leaving many fundamental questions about plasma turbulence unanswered. Therefore, the time has now come wherein making significant additional progress to determine the dynamical nature of solar wind turbulence requires multi-spacecraft missions spanning a wide range of scales simultaneously. A dedicated multi-spacecraft mission concurrently covering a wide range of scales in the solar wind would not only allow us to directly determine the spatial and temporal structure of plasma turbulence, but it would also mitigate the limitations that current multi-spacecraft missions face, such as non-ideal orbits for observing solar wind turbulence. Some of the fundamentally important questions that can only be addressed by in situ multipoint measurements are discussed.

Portable Thomson scattering system for temporally resolved plasma measurements under low density conditions

Abstract:We present the development of a portable Thomson scattering diagnostic system allowing simultaneous spatially and temporally resolved plasma property measurements for low density plasmas. The setup uses a compact pulsed Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) as the light source with suppression by two volume Bragg grating notch filters and dispersion with a single-stage spectrometer before measurement with an intensified camera. A key issue is the detailed light collection and how it impacts the sensitivity and elastic light suppression, for which we have investigated two optical configurations, one based on a 7 × 1 linear fiber bundle and the other based on a slit spatial-filter. We find that the configuration with the slit spatial-filter provides a higher sensitivity by a factor of ∼2 along with more uniform spatial response. We have developed a custom pulsed-plasma setup with a modulation at 20 kHz, representative of the Hall thruster breathing mode oscillation, to show the possibility of temporally resolved measurements for electric propulsion applications. We have successfully recorded the variations in electron number density and temperature with sub-mm spatial resolution and capturing ten temporal points over the 50 µs modulation period. The detection limit of electron density (with the spatial-filter configuration) is ∼1.6 × 1017 m-3, which is ∼1/10 of the plasma density in the acceleration channel of Hall thrusters.

Abstract:A low-cost plasma nozzle/setup was developed to allow demonstrations and hands-on experimentation with non-thermal plasmas of air and other gases. Several high-tech plasma applications, such as surface cleaning and activation, as well as mild, but effective sterilization will be explained and adapted to be eagerly explored by undergraduate and senior high school students. The results were surprisingly similar to those obtained with a commercial plasma treatment system. While the focus is on the experimental introduction to plasma physics and chemistry, it will be highlighted how a multidisciplinary approach enables the study and discussion of important concepts ranging from surface energies and contact angles to environmental or microbiological control.

Abstract:A pyrometer has been developed to spatially resolve the blackbody temperature of a radiatively cooling warm dense plasma. The pyrometer is composed of a lens coupled fiber array, Czerny-Turner visible spectrometer, and an intensified gated CCD for the detector. The radiatively cooling warm dense plasma is generated by a ∼100-ns-long intense relativistic electron bunch with an energy of 19.1 MeV and a current of 0.2 kA interacting with 100-μm-thick low-Z foils. The continuum spectrum is measured over 250 nm with a low groove density grating. These plasmas emit visible light or blackbody radiation on relatively long time scales (∼0.1 to 100 μs). The diagnostic layout, calibration, and proof-of-principle measurement of a radiatively cooling aluminum plasma is presented, which includes a spatially resolved temperature gradient and the ability to temporally resolve it also.

Abstract:Plasma wakefield accelerators have been used to accelerate electron and positron particle beams with gradients that are orders of magnitude larger than those achieved in conventional accelerators. In addition to being accelerated by the plasma wakefield, the beam particles also experience strong transverse forces that may disrupt the beam quality. Hollow plasma channels have been proposed as a technique for generating accelerating fields without transverse forces. Here we demonstrate a method for creating an extended hollow plasma channel and measure the wakefields created by an ultrarelativistic positron beam as it propagates through the channel. The plasma channel is created by directing a high-intensity laser pulse with a spatially modulated profile into lithium vapour, which results in an annular region of ionization. A peak decelerating field of 230 MeV m −1 is inferred from changes in the beam energy spectrum, in good agreement with theory and particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract:We present the first two-dimensional (2D) optical Thomson scattering measurements of electron density and temperature in laser-produced plasmas. The novel instrument directly measures $n_e(x,y)$ and $T_e(x,y)$ in two dimensions over large spatial regions (cm$^2$) with sub-mm spatial resolution, by automatically translating the scattering volume while the plasma is produced repeatedly by irradiating a solid target with a high-repetition-rate laser beam (10 J, $\sim$10$^{12}$ W/cm$^2$, 1 Hz). In this paper, we describe the design and auto-alignment of the instrument, and the computerized fitting algorithm of the spectral distribution function to large data-sets of measured scattering spectra, as they transition from the collective to the non-collective regime with distance from the target. As an example, we present 2D scattering measurements in laser driven shock waves in ambient nitrogen gas at a pressure of 95 mTorr.

Real-time in situ monitoring of dust particle growth in a low-pressure nanodusty plasma based on laser-induced photodetachment

Abstract:Particulate matter air pollution in the form of ultrafine dust is a growing global concern. In this Letter, we will use a nanodusty Ar/HMDSO plasma as a model system for a heavily contaminated gas and we present the development of a technique for real-time in situ measurements of the dust particle size. The method is based on laser-induced photodetachment of bound electrons from the surface of dust particles. These photo-released electrons are measured as an increase in the free electron density of the plasma using microwave cavity resonance spectroscopy. We show that instead of reconstructing the entire resonance profile, the temporal response of a single microwave frequency was enough to perform the measurements. More specifically, the decay timescale of the cavity response can be interpreted as the re-charging timescale of the dust particles. Then, using a stochastic model, this timescale can be modeled, which eventually retrieves the dust particle size. We found good agreement between the predicted dust particle size and the average dust particle size obtained from ex situ scanning electron microscopy measurements. This method allows for the real-time monitoring of the dust particle size and a controlled production of nanometer-scale dust particles, which gives opportunities both for fundamental dusty plasma physics and models, as well as for applications in monitoring ultrafine dust air pollution.

Abstract:Dust trajectories have been recorded with an unprecedented, under fusion-relevant plasma conditions, spatial resolution of 9 μm/pixel in Pilot-PSI. The optical setup allowed the use of fast cameras as a basic microscope. It is demonstrated that such a resolution is essential for the correct interpretation of experiments on several aspects of dust-surface interactions. Highly resolved tungsten dust dynamics measurements are presented from dedicated experiments on dust collisions with plasma facing components, motion in the vicinity of castellated samples and remobilization from planar samples.

Abstract:Laser Thomson scattering is a minimally intrusive diagnostic technique for determining electron temperature, density, and bulk velocity in plasma systems. Advances in technology have made possible the application of Thomson scattering to electric propulsion-relevant plasma systems, with reported electron number-density detection limits as low as 1×1016 m−3, and electron temperatures from one-to-tens eV. However, the implementation of laser Thomson scattering in large vacuum testing facilities, wherein electric propulsion devices are tested, remains a challenge. This work presents the implementation of a laser Thomson scattering system in a large vacuum test facility at the Georgia Tech High Power Electric Propulsion Laboratory. The diagnostic was optimized for maximum light-collection efficiency and ease of re-alignment while the facility is at vacuum. The high light-collection efficiency allowed reduced accumulation times to achieve the target detection limit of 1×1017 m−3. The diagnostic is used to measure axial electron property profiles in the near-field plume of a lanthanum hexaboride hollow cathode operating at 25 A on krypton at a background pressure of 1.3×10−6 Torr—Kr. The diagnostic is quantitatively compared to similar systems in the literature. The resulting axial points, collected from 2 to 8 mm downstream of the cathode keeper orifice, are qualitatively and quantitatively compared with simulations and experimental measurements made with electrostatic probes and laser-induced fluorescence. The main quantitative difference between measured values and results is the one to two order of magnitude difference in the peak electron density, being attributed to the relative size and location of the external anode with respect to the cathode keeper.
