Abstract:This study aimed to explore the rear-scarp positions in water weakening-triggered retrogressive shallow soil (RSS) landslides, and a theoretical method was proposed to calculate these positions. Five model tests were conducted to replicate rear scarps of the landslides and to reveal their generation mechanisms. Subsequently, a new theoretical method was proposed to calculate the rear-scarp positions based on the generation mechanisms. Finally, the five experimental landslides and two actual landslides were utilized to assess the effectiveness of the new method. The test results indicate that water weakening-triggered RSS landslides show failure mechanisms of two failure surfaces, with a gentle basal sliding surface (BSS) generated first and steep rear scarp generated last. The inclinations of ten experimental rear scarps vary from 48.7° to 64.4°, showing that the rear-scarp positions vary widely with various positions of BSSs. The calculations for all experimental and actual landslides show that there exists only one valley point wherein the localized minimum factors of safety attain their nadir, thereby indicating the critical rear scarp. This result shows that the new method readily finds the critical rear scarp with the global minimum factor of safety. For the eleven experimental or actual rear scarps, the positions of the calculated critical rear scarps largely agree with the measured or published positions.
