Abstract:Realizing secure human–robot interaction is a key aspect of Industry 5.0’s “human-centric”. As human involvement is essential for precise operations and wise decision-making in industrial production, industrial exoskeletons can assure worker safety while enhancing productivity during human–robot interaction. To promote industrial exoskeletons to better realize human–robot security in industrial interaction scenarios such as automobile assembly, logistics handling, etc., the key factors and challenges affecting industrial exoskeletons are analyzed, and the research progress is summarized. Industrial exoskeletons are classified into static-, dynamic-, and special-work scenario-oriented ones according to different work scenarios and needs. It also analyzes the industrial exoskeleton technology in five aspects: mechanism design, control system design, interactive information perception, variable stiffness drive and interactive interface design. On the basis of which, it analyzes the problems faced by the development of industrial exoskeletons at present, proposes the solutions to the problems, and looks forward to the development trend of realizing secure human–robot interaction with the help of industrial exoskeletons.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robot is a wearable intelligent device that can enhance human motion function, which has a wide application prospect in military, medical and civil disaster relief fields. As an important branch of exoskeleton, the power-assisted lower limbs exoskeleton has always been a research hotspot in this domain. Based on the study of human lower limbs' kinematics mechanism, a new wearable lower limbs exoskeleton structure is designed and the prototype is made in this paper. Finally, a wearing experiments based on gait data of CGA database is carried out, through which the designed exoskeleton realized the moving gait in the walking cycle.

Abstract:The hydraulic exoskeleton is one research hotspot in the field of robotics, which can take heavy load due to the high power density of the hydraulic system. However, the traditional hydraulic system is normally centralized, inefficient, and bulky during application, which limits its development in the exoskeleton. For improving the robot's performance, its hydraulic actuating system should be optimized further. In this paper a novel hydraulic actuating system (HAS) based on electric-hydrostatic actuator is proposed, which is applied to hip and knee joints. Each HAS integrates an electric servo motor, a high-speed micro pump, a specific tank, and other components into a module. The specific parameters are obtained through relevant simulation according to human motion data and load requirements. The dynamic models of the HAS are built, and validated by the system identification. Experiments of trajectory tracking and human-exoskeleton interaction are carried out, which demonstrate the proposed HAS has the ability to be applied to the exoskeleton. Compared with the previous prototype, the total weight of the HAS in the robot is reduced by about 40%, and the power density is increased by almost 1.6 times.

Abstract:Robotic orthoses, or exoskeletons, have the potential to provide effective rehabilitation while overcoming the availability and cost constraints of therapists. However, current orthosis actuation systems use components designed for industrial applications, not specifically for interacting with humans. This can limit orthoses' capabilities and, if their users' needs are not adequately considered, contribute to their abandonment. Here, a user centered review is presented on: requirements for orthosis actuators; the electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic actuators currently used in orthoses and their advantages and limitations; the potential of new actuator technologies, including smart materials, to actuate orthoses; and the future of orthosis actuator research.

Abstract:Exploring positive potentials in human‐centred wearable robotics while signposting ethical risks. Exoskeletons are technologies that can help to increase or improve mobility, dexterity, and strength. They can be used as assistive devices, to restore lost affordances, or for rehabilitation. While mechanical exoskeletons are passive and rely on the body's power for movement, powered exoskeletons are active mechanical systems that can assist or enhance a user's capacity, including in strength and performance. They also offer scope to augment or enhance beyond simple medical support, with potential in the future for superhuman power and strength. While these technologies present promising clinical opportunities, including for those who want to regain walking capacity, they also bring ethical questions, such as about data privacy and accessibility. In addition, the physical features of the technology can prove mentally, physically, and financially demanding, and may be deployed in contexts where user choice and autonomy is constrained. In this article, we discuss these issues, and raise some pertinent ethical questions, not all of which can be easily answered. We touch upon medical and therapeutic uses, for industrial and workplace settings, and in military contexts specially, given these are contexts where such technology may be required or even imposed. We argue that reasonable optimism for such technologies needs to be tempered by sufficient ethical assessment to identify and address barriers to research, development, and use. As well as managing any impacts and expectations for the health and wellbeing of users, the potential impact on autonomy and the risk of coercion, we have to consider what kind of data may be recorded or used, and the risk that these technologies could exacerbate existing inequalities or harms.

Abstract:Background: Recent advancements in sensor technology and artificial intelligence mechanisms have led to a rapid increase in research and development of robotic orthoses or "exoskeletons" to support people with mobility problems. The purpose of this case study was to provide insight into the lived reality of using the assistive robotic exoskeleton ReWalk. Method: We used ethnographic techniques to explore the everyday experience and use of the assistive robotic device. Results: We found that the appropriation and integration of the technology within the patient's everyday lives required a social and collaborative effort, which continued into use. The decisions to utilise the technology (or not) was closely tied to physical, social, cultural, environmental, and psychological factors. Consequently, there was much variation in patients' perception of the technology and opportunities for support. Four themes emerged: (a) Meaning of mobility-physical mobility represents more than functional ability. Its present socio-cultural meaning is associated with an individual's self-identity and life priorities. (b) Accomplishing body-technique-integration with the body requires a long process of skill acquisition and re-embodiment. (c) Adaptation and adjustment in use-successful use of the technology was characterised by ongoing adjustment and adaptation of the technology and ways of using it. (d) Human element-introduction and sustained use of the exoskeleton demand a social and collaborative effort across the user's professional and lay resources. Conclusions: This study highlights that the development and implementation of the technology need to be grounded in a deep understanding of the day-to-day lives and experiences of the people that use them.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots enable individuals with impaired physical functions to perform daily activities and maintain independence. However, the discomfort experienced by users when using these devices may limit the application scope of exoskeleton robots. Therefore, this paper systematically defines and analyzes the key design factors affecting the wearing comfort of rigid exoskeleton robots by differentiating and discussing the characteristics of traditional exoskeleton robots and exoskeleton robots equipped with the self-alignment mechanism based on addressing misalignment issues. Furthermore, the various structural configurations of the Physical Human-Robot Attachment Interface (PHRAI) and related quantitative evaluation indicators are explored in depth, and the advantages and limitations of structural customized design methods combining parametric design, Three-Dimensional (3D) scanning, and 3D printing technology are evaluated. Finally, the current concerns in the research field and potential solution strategies are proposed, aiming to provide directional guidance to optimize future exoskeleton robots. The research findings are of significant value for enhancing the comfort of wearing exoskeleton robots and provide valuable theoretical and practical references for future research.

Abstract:Wearable robots have obtained increasing research attention for the potential to provide the wearer with greater strength, higher extensibility, and handleability. Wearable extra robotic limbs (Ex-Limb) as a new type of wearable robot become a hot research issue in recent years. Ex-Limb reconstructs various advantages of robots on the wearer as an extra body part due to the potential of the intelligent robot in promoting working efficiency by automation technology. This paper defines the concept of Ex-Limb and introduces the Ex-Limb from 5 aspects including the development process, the structural design features, the performance parameters, and the application scenario, which are the main considerations of human–robot interaction based on the reported works in the past decade. This paper also systematically summarizes and underlines the current research progress based on different classifications, and mainly analyzes the key technologies including human–robot interactive adapting (HRiA), human–robot interactive perception (HRiP), human–robot interactive control (HRiC), and human–robot collaboration (HRC), thus describing the practical challenges faced by Ex-Limb and giving a prospect of the main technical aspects to be improved in future. It is concluded that human–robot integration is the base of high-level human–robot collaboration, and the interaction between the human brain and the intelligent brain of Ex-Limb would improve the capabilities of Ex-Limb to sense the wearer's intention and collaborate with the wearer. The essence of HRC is the natural interaction process of integrating the biological system and the physical system, making the physical system become a part of the biological system.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. Exo-Skeleton is a wearable robotic device which was emerged in later 1960s that has a multitude of applications ranging from weightlifting to wearer's stability improvement. This paper makes a novel approach in reviewing the various exo-skeleton models that are available at the present. The idea of this paper is to study and compare the models in terms of medical applicability like gait rehabilitation, physiotherapy, human strength augmentation, various control strategies of exo-skeleton, ergonomic study, and need for exo-skeleton system for enhancing the life of humans. Since exo-skeletons are wearable devices, it requires precise controlling of the actuators and repeatability, and accuracy plays a vital role. The paper elucidated with a detailed analysis, reviewed and summarized the core essence of 300 research papers and patents in the field of exo-skeleton with the aforesaid aspects of application and drive system with their control methodologies from 2007 to 2022 and shown a trend with year-wise data from which it is clear that the future of industrial work will become a collaborative activity involving the exo-skeleton system with human labours. Human – robot interaction is vital and must for enabling an integration which can be achieved with the amelioration in the control and actuation techniques for precise control. With the furtherance in the technology the exo-skeletons can be purpose built that can be of rigid or flexible structures with active, passive, or quasi-passive controls based on the user needs. Joint handed operation of Exo-skeleton with the alternative treatment methodologies will yield a plethora of benefits in the near future in comparison with the present conventional treatment modes that could result in reduction of surgeries.

Abstract:Evaluating exoskeleton actuation methods and designing an effective controller for these exoskeletons are both challenging and time-consuming tasks. This is largely due to the complicated human–robot interactions, the selection of sensors and actuators, electrical/command connection issues, and communication delays. In this research, a test framework for evaluating a new active–passive shoulder exoskeleton was developed, and a surface electromyography (sEMG)-based human-robot cooperative control method was created to execute the wearer's movement intentions. The hierarchical control used sEMG-based intention estimation, mid-level strength regulation, and low-level actuator control. It was then applied to shoulder joint elevation experiments to verify the exoskeleton controller's effectiveness. The active–passive assistance was compared with fully passive and fully active exoskeleton control using the following criteria: (1) post-test survey, (2) load tolerance duration, and (3) computed human torque, power, and metabolic energy expenditure using sEMG signals and inverse dynamic simulation. The experimental outcomes showed that active–passive exoskeletons required less muscular activation torque (50%) from the user and reduced fatigue duration indicators by a factor of 3, compared to fully passive ones.

Abstract:The lower extremity exoskeleton, which can sense the neural motion state of the human body and then provide motion assistance, is gradually replacing the traditional wheelchairs and assistive devices, making many patients with disabilities or movement disorders able to regain the walking function. This survey provides a comprehensive review on recent technological advances in lower extremity neurorehabilitation exoskeleton from the perspectives of sensing, gait dynamics, and human–robot collaboration. For each technology category, a detailed comparison among state-of-the-art solutions is provided. The results show that the exoskeleton has been greatly improved in mechanical and learning ability. However, some issues, such as adaptability, safety, and efficiency still restrict the development of exoskeleton technology. To address these problems, the remaining open challenges and future directions to improve intelligence, sensing, gait analysis, trust, efficiency, generalization, and power consumption of exoskeleton are also presented and discussed.

Advancements in Upper Body Exoskeleton: Implementing Active Gravity Compensation with a Feedforward Controller

Abstract:In this study, we present a feedforward control system designed for active gravity compensation on an upper body exoskeleton. The system utilizes only positional data from internal motor sensors to calculate torque, employing analytical control equations based on Newton-Euler Inverse Dynamics. Compared to feedback control systems, the feedforward approach offers several advantages. It eliminates the need for external torque sensors, resulting in reduced hardware complexity and weight. Moreover, the feedforward control exhibits a more proactive response, leading to enhanced performance. The exoskeleton used in the experiments is lightweight and comprises 4 Degrees of Freedom, closely mimicking human upper body kinematics and three-dimensional range of motion. We conducted tests on both hardware and simulations of the exoskeleton, demonstrating stable performance. The system maintained its position over an extended period, exhibiting minimal friction and avoiding undesired slewing.

Abstract:Positive biomechanical outcomes have been reported with lower-limb exoskeletons in laboratory settings, but these devices have difficulty delivering appropriate assistance in synchrony with human gait as the task or rate of phase progression change in real-world environments. This paper presents a controller for an ankle exoskeleton that uses a data-driven kinematic model to continuously estimate the phase, phase rate, stride length, and ground incline states during locomotion, which enables the real-time adaptation of torque assistance to match human torques observed in a multi-activity database of 10 able-bodied subjects. We demonstrate in live experiments with a new cohort of 10 able-bodied participants that the controller yields phase estimates comparable to the state of the art, while also estimating task variables with similar accuracy to recent machine learning approaches. The implemented controller successfully adapts its assistance in response to changing phase and task variables, both during controlled treadmill trials (N=10, phase RMSE: 4.8 +- 2.4\%) and a real-world stress test with extremely uneven terrain (N=1, phase RMSE: 4.8 +- 2.7\%).

Abstract:Effective control of an exoskeleton robot (ER) using a human-robot interface is crucial for assessing the robot's movements and the force they produce to generate efficient control signals. Interestingly, certain surveys were done to show off cutting-edge exoskeleton robots. The review papers that were previously published have not thoroughly examined the control strategy, which is a crucial component of automating exoskeleton systems. As a result, this review focuses on examining the most recent developments and problems associated with exoskeleton control systems, particularly during the last few years (2017–2022). In addition, the trends and challenges of cooperative control, particularly multi-information fusion, are discussed.

Abstract:As a rehabilitation robot for aiding in the movement of lower limbs, the lower limb exoskeleton is a beneficial device. In order to make the most effective use of the exoskeleton, the control strategy plays a crucial role. This review paper provides a background and classification of lower limb exoskeleton control strategies, such as model-based and hierarchy-based control. Further, we presented mainly the high-level control architecture of lower limb exoskeletons, which is aimed at detecting the intention of human movement. An in-depth discussion is provided in this paper regarding manual user input (MUI), surface electromyography (sEMG), and brain-computer interface (BCI). Many people need exoskeletons, which is why this review was written. Exoskeletons, however, are expensive and cannot be mass-produced, and their control methods are immature, making them ineffective. Thus, the objective of this review is to identify research gaps and common limitations in previous research to obtain future directions for improving the usability of the control mechanism. In an alternative approach, MUI and BCI are combined to reduce the time spent switching movement modes and the amount of concentration required to do so.
A Realistic Model Reference Computed Torque Control Strategy for Human Lower Limb Exoskeletons

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots have become a promising tool in neurorehabilitation, offering effective physical therapy and recovery monitoring. The success of these therapies relies on precise motion control systems. Although computed torque control based on inverse dynamics provides a robust theoretical foundation, its practical application in rehabilitation is limited by its sensitivity to model accuracy, making it less effective when dealing with unpredictable payloads. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a novel model reference computed torque controller that accounts for parametric uncertainties while optimizing computational efficiency. A dynamic model of a seven-degree-of-freedom human lower limb exoskeleton is developed, incorporating a realistic joint friction model to accurately reflect the physical behavior of the robot. To reduce computational demands, the control system is split into two loops: a slower loop that predicts joint torque requirements based on input trajectories and robot dynamics, and a faster PID loop that corrects trajectory tracking errors. Coriolis and centrifugal forces are excluded from the model due to their minimal impact on system dynamics relative to their computational cost. Experimental results show high accuracy in trajectory tracking, and statistical analyses confirm the controller's robustness and effectiveness in handling parametric uncertainties. This approach presents a promising advancement for improving the stability and performance of exoskeleton-based neurorehabilitation.

Walking on Real-world Terrain with an Ankle Exoskeleton in Cerebral Palsy

Abstract:Despite medical treatment focused on addressing walking disability, many millions of people with neurological conditions, like cerebral palsy (CP), struggle to maintain independent mobility. Lower limb exoskeletons and exosuits may hold potential for augmenting walking ability. However, it remains unknown whether these wearable robots are safe and beneficial for use outside of highly controlled laboratory environments, the demonstration of which is necessary for clinical translation. Here, we show that a lightweight, portable, ankle exoskeleton with an adaptable one-size-works-for-all assistance controller can improve energy efficiency and walking speed for individuals with CP spanning a wide spectrum of lower limb impairment in a multi-terrain real-world environment. Tested on an outdoor walking route with level, sloped, and stair terrain, robotic assistance resulted in a 15-18% (p = 0.013-0.026) reduction in estimated energy cost and a 7-8% (p = 0.001-0.004) increase in average walking speed across "shorter" 6-minute and "longer" 20-minute walking durations relative to unassisted walking. This study provides evidence that wearable robots may soon improve mobility in neighborhood, school, and community settings for individuals with CP.
