Abstract:The non-linear optical response of interacting one-dimensional Frenkel excitons in highly oriented J-aggregates is investigated theoretically in terms of the excitonic two-level system model and theory of Orr and Ward. The linear absorption, electroabsorption, third-harmonic generation and two-photon absorption of interacting one-dimensional Frenkel excitons are calculated. The numerical results show a reasonable consistency with the experimental results in PIC–Br J-aggregates.
Solid-State Effects on the Optical Excitation of Push-Pull Molecular J-Aggregates by First-Principles Simulations

Abstract:J-aggregates are a class of low-dimensional molecular crystals which display enhanced interaction with light. These systems show interesting optical properties as an intense and narrow red-shifted absorption peak (J-band) with respect to the spectrum of the corresponding monomer. The need to theoretically investigate optical excitations in J-aggregates is twofold: a thorough first-principles description is still missing and a renewed interest is rising recently in understanding the nature of the J-band, in particular regarding the collective mechanisms involved in its formation. In this work, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of a J-aggregate molecular crystal made of ordered arrangements of organic push-pull chromophores. By using a time dependent density functional theory approach, we assess the role of the molecular packing in the enhancement and red shift of the J-band along with the effects of confinement in the optical absorption, when moving from bulk to low-dimensional crystal structures. We simulate the optical absorption of different configurations (i.e., monomer, dimers, a polymer chain, and a monolayer sheet) extracted from the bulk crystal. By analyzing the induced charge density associated with the J-band, we conclude that it is a longitudinal excitation, delocalized along parallel linear chains and that its overall red shift results from competing coupling mechanisms, some giving red shift and others giving blue shift, which derive from both coupling between transition densities and renormalization of the single-particle energy levels.

Site-dependence of van der Waals interaction explains exciton spectra of double-walled tubular J-aggregates

Abstract:The simulation of the optical properties of supramolecular aggregates requires the development of methods, which are able to treat a large number of coupled chromophores interacting with the environment. Since it is currently not possible to treat large systems by quantum chemistry, the Frenkel exciton model is a valuable alternative. In this work we show how the Frenkel exciton model can be extended in order to explain the excitonic spectra of a specific double-walled tubular dye aggregate explicitly taking into account dispersive energy shifts of ground and excited states due to van der Waals interaction with all surrounding molecules. The experimentally observed splitting is well explained by the site-dependent energy shift of molecules placed at the inner or outer side of the double-walled tube, respectively. Therefore we can conclude, that inclusion of the site-dependent dispersive effect in the theoretical description of optical properties of nanoscaled dye aggregates is mandatory.

Observation of Strong J-Aggregate Light Emission in Monolayer Molecular Crystal on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Abstract:J-aggregates are widely used in studies of light-matter interaction and organic optoelectronic devices. Although J-aggregate films can be fabricated on salt by epitaxial growth method, the size is limited to hundreds of nanometer. In this work, with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a substrate, highly crystalline J-aggregate ultrathin films of N,N'-ditridecylperylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI-C-13) are achieved by physical vapor transport (PVT) method. Significant bathochromically shifted absorption band and narrowed 0-0 transition are observed in the monolayer PTCDI-C-13 crystal on h-BN. The exciton coherence number N-coh of monolayer J-aggregate film extracted from the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum is up to 15 at T = 140 K, which is higher than that of the epitaxially grown layer on salt. Beyond the first molecular layer, the multilayer crystal on h-BN is dominated by H-aggregates. Further study shows that that the first molecular layer on h-BN adopts the highly ordered face-on configuration, while the overlayers adopt the edge-on motif. As a comparison, only H-aggregate PTCDI-C-13 ultrathin films are found on SiO2 substrates, but no J-aggregates. The results suggest that high-quality J-aggregates can be prepared by utilizing appropriate substrates via physical vapor transport.
Quantum Dynamics and Spectroscopy of Excitons in Molecular Aggregates

Abstract:The theoretical description and the properties of Frenkel excitons in non-covalently bonded molecular aggregates are reviewed from a multi-exciton perspective of dissipative quantum dynamics. First, the photophysical and quantum chemical characterization of the monomeric dye building blocks is discussed, including the important aspect of electron-vibrational coupling within the Huang-Rhys model. Supplementing the model by the Coulombic interactions between monomers, the description of aggregates in terms of excitonic or vibrational-excitonic bands follows. Besides of giving rise to complex absorption and emission line shapes, exciton-vibrational interaction is responsible for energy and phase relaxation and thereby limits the size of coherent excitations in larger aggregates. Throughout, emphasis is put on the electronic three-level model as a minimum requirement to describe nonlinear spectroscopies including effects of two-exciton states such as excited state absorption and exciton-exciton annihilation. The experimentally observed characteristics of stationary absorption and fluorescence spectra of aggregates as well as their temperature dependence are discussed. Examples for ultrafast spectroscopic experiments including pump-probe studies, photon echo and two-dimensional spectroscopy are presented and results on the size of coherence domains and on intra- and interband relaxation are given. Finally, experimental signatures for exciton-exciton annihilation and their analysis with respect to the mobility of excitons are described.

Through-Space Exciton Delocalization in Segregated HJ-Crystalline Molecular Aggregates

Abstract:Exciton delocalization relates to many important photophysical processes such as excitation energy transfer, charge separation, and singlet fission. Here, we analyze the exciton delocalization through the photophysical measurements of the molecular crystal 2,2'-(thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole-2,5-diyl)bis(4-methylphenol) (m-MTTM), which is the segregated HJ-aggregate confirmed by the calculation of exciton coupling along each direction in the crystal structure. Linearly polarized steady-state absorption spectroscopy verifies that the red-shifted optical transition majorly arises from the aggregates unparalleled to the a-axis. In addition, the temperature-dependent emission spectra show the increase of 0-0 versus 0-1 vibronic emission ratio as the temperature decreases with the coherence number equaling 2.2-1.0 at 140-200 K, which is the characteristic behavior of J-aggregates. To elaborate these observations, we carry out the simulation with the Holstein-type Hamiltonian considering short-range chargetransfer-mediated couplings (perturbative regime) under the two-partide approximation, showing that the 3 x 3 laminar-like aggregates in the ac-plane and the 3 x 3 x 2 three-dimensional aggregates fit well with the emission spectrum at 140 K. In the 3 X 3 aggregates, the coherence function in the ac-plane shows the in-phase correlation along (1,0,-1), elucidating how J-aggregates form in segregated HJ-aggregates with dominant positive coupling. Under the strong intralayer out-of-phase correlation, the 3 x 3 x 2 aggregates demonstrate that the vibronic coupling has a great impact on the interlayer correlation. Furthermore, the coherence function along (0,1/2,-1/2) and (-1,1/2,-1/2) exhibits the thermal-activated phase flipping. These discoveries pave the ways for further manipulations of exciton delocalization in three-dimensional molecular solids.

Abstract:AbstractOrganic optoelectronic materials have attracted extensive attention in the past decades due to their wide applications in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), photocatalysis, etc. Significant advancements have been obtained in the material designs based on the insight into the fundamental physics of exciton related to molecular stacking patterns in solid/condensed states. The exciton characteristics and behaviors are not only a starting point for studying photophysical and photochemical processes on a microscopic level, but also a crucial point in determining the optoelectronic properties of macroscopic aggregates. This review summarizes the historic development of exciton models, accompanied by the discoveries of special molecular stacking patterns (H‐/J‐/X‐/M‐aggregates), and the competitive de‐excitation pathways of excitons including fluorescence, energy transfer, singlet fission, excimer formation and symmetry‐breaking charge separation in the confined aggregate structures. Additionally, it highlights the capabilities of a correlation between molecular stacking modes and exciton behaviors, which provides new insights and perspectives for optimizing exciton character and behavior through the modulation of molecular arrangement in aggregate states, thereby enhancing the performance of optoelectronic materials.
The spectral signatures of Frenkel polarons in H- and J-aggregates

Abstract:Electronic excitations in small aggregates, thin films, and crystals of conjugated organic molecules play a fundamental role in the operation of a wide array of organic-based devices including solar cells, transistors, and light-emitting diodes. Such excitations, or excitons, are generally spread out over several molecules: a balance between the delocalizing influence of resonant intermolecular coupling and the localizing influence of static and dynamic disorder determines the coherence range of the exciton. Because of the "soft" nature of organic materials, significant nuclear relaxation in the participating molecules also accompanies the electronic excitations. To properly understand energy or charge transport, one must treat intermolecular (excitonic) coupling, electron-vibrational coupling, and disorder on equal footing. In this Account, we review the key elements of a theoretical approach based on a multiparticle representation that describes electronic excitations in organic materials as vibronic excitations surrounded by a field of vibrational excitations. Such composite excitations are appropriately called Frenkel excitonic polarons. For many conjugated molecules, the bulk of the nuclear reorganization energy following electronic excitation arises from the elongation of a symmetric vinyl stretching mode with energy approximately 1400 cm(-1). To appreciate the impact of aggregation, we study how the vibronic progression of this mode, which dominates the isolated (solvated) molecule absorption and emission spectra, is distorted when molecules are close enough to interact with each other. As we demonstrate in this Account, the nature of the distortion provides a wealth of information about how the molecules are packed, the strength of the excitonic interactions between molecules, the number of molecules that are coherently coupled, and the nature of the disorder. We show that the aggregation-induced deviations from the Poissonian distribution of vibronic peak intensities take on two extremes identified with ideal H- and J-aggregates. The sign of the nearest neighbor electronic coupling, positive for H and negative for J, distinguishes the two basic aggregate forms. For several decades, researchers have known that H-aggregates exhibit blue-shifted absorption spectra and are subradiant while J-aggregates exhibit the opposite behavior (red-shifted absorption and superradiance). However, the exact inclusion of exciton-vibrational coupling reveals several more distinguishing traits between the two aggregate types: in H(J)-aggregates the ratio of the first two vibronic peak intensities in the absorption spectrum decreases (increases) with increasing excitonic coupling, while the ratio of the 0-0 to 0-1 emission intensities increases (decreases) with disorder and increases (decreases) with increasing temperature. These two extreme behaviors provide the framework for understanding absorption and emission in more complex morphologies, such as herringbone packing in oligo(phenylene vinylene)s, oligothiophenes and polyacene crystals, as well as the polymorphic packing arrangements observed in carotenoids.

Abstract:We present here an analytical thermal vibration correlation function formalism to calculate the nonradiative decay rate constant (knr) considering excitonic coupling effect (ECE) for molecular aggregates based on split-operator approximation. Combining with first-principles calculations, we found that knr is enhanced by ECE for both H- and J-aggregates. In addition, ECE is found to be minor for the AIEgens (aggregation-induced emission luminogens).
Modeling Molecular J and H Aggregates using Multiple-Davydov D2 Ansatz

Abstract:The linear absorption spectrum of J and H molecular aggregates is studied using the time-dependent Dirac-Frenkel variational principle (TDVP) with the multi-Davydov D2 (mD2) trial wavefunction (Ansatz). Both the electronic and vibrational molecular degrees of freedom (DOF) are considered. By inspecting and comparing absorption spectrum of both open and closed chain aggregates over a range of electrostatic nearest neighbour coupling and temperature values, we find the mD2 Ansatz to be necessary for obtaining accurate aggregate absorption spectrum in all parameter regimes considered, while the regular Davydov D2 Ansatz is not sufficient. Establishing relation between the model parameters and the depth of the mD2 Ansatz is the main focus of the study. Molecular aggregate wavepacket dynamics, during excitation by an external field, is also studied. We find the wavepacket to exhibit an out-of-phase oscillatory behavior along the coordinate and momentum axes and an overall wavepacket broadening, implying the electron-vibrational (vibronic) eigenstates of an aggregate to reside on non-parabolic energy surfaces.

Excitation energy transfer between closely spaced multichromophoric systems: Effects of band mixing and intraband relaxation

Abstract:We theoretically analyze the excitation energy transfer between two closely spaced linear molecular J-aggregates, whose excited states are Frenkel excitons. The aggregate with the higher (lower) exciton band edge energy is considered as the donor (acceptor). The celebrated theory of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), which relates the transfer rate to the overlap integral of optical spectra, fails in this situation. We point out that in addition to the well-known fact that the point-dipole approximation breaks down (enabling energy transfer between optically forbidden states), also the perturbative treatment of the electronic interactions between donor and acceptor system, which underlies the Förster approach, in general loses its validity due to overlap of the exciton bands. We therefore propose a nonperturbative method, in which donor and acceptor bands are mixed and the energy transfer is described in terms of a phonon-assisted energy relaxation process between the two new (renormalized) bands. The validity of the conventional perturbative approach is investigated by comparing to the nonperturbative one; in general this validity improves for lower temperature and larger distances (weaker interactions) between the aggregates. We also demonstrate that the interference between intraband relaxation and energy transfer renders the proper definition of the transfer rate and its evaluation from experiment a complicated issue, which involves the initial excitation condition.

Abstract:We predict the existence of exchange broadening of optical lineshapes in disordered molecular aggregates and a nonuniversal disorder scaling of the localization characteristics of the collective electronic excitations (excitons). These phenomena occur for heavy-tailed Lévy disorder distributions with divergent second moments - distributions that play a role in many branches of physics. Our results sharply contrast with aggregate models commonly analyzed, where the second moment is finite. They bear a relevance for other types of collective excitations as well.

Abstract:The optical spectra are effective means to reveal the molecular interactions and the luminescent mechanism of the. organic molecules in aggregates. Herein, we systematically investigate the crystalline state vibrationally resolved absorption and emission spectra for a series of AlEgens and non-AlEgens by considering intermolecular excited state interaction by using Frenkel-exciton model coupled with quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations. It is found that the competition between the intramolecular vibronic coupling (lambda) and the intermolecular exciton coupling (J) governs the crystalline aggregate spectral characters. At room temperature, when J/lambda value is larger than a critical value (ca. 0.17), the exciton coupling would have a large effect on the optical spectra. For face-to-face H-aggregates, only when both intermolecular electrostatic and excitonic couplings are considered, can one obtain calculated vibrationally resolved spectra and well reproduce the experimental results, namely, remarkable blue-shift in absorption but much less red-shift in emission when compared with the gas-phase. The optical spectra of the AIR-active aggregates are determined by the intramolecular vibronic coupling because the ratio J/lambda is less than the critical value.
Direct Observation of Aggregation‐Induced Emission Mechanism

Abstract:The mechanism of aggregation-induced emission, which overcomes the common aggregation-caused quenching problem in organic optoelectronics, is revealed by monitoring the real time structural evolution and dynamics of electronic excited state with frequency and polarization resolved ultrafast UV/IR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The formation of Woodward-Hoffmann cyclic intermediates upon ultraviolet excitation is observed in dilute solutions of tetraphenylethylene and its derivatives but not in their respective solid. The ultrafast cyclization provides an efficient nonradiative relaxation pathway through crossing a conical intersection. Without such a reaction mechanism, the electronic excitation is preserved in the molecular solids and the molecule fluoresces efficiently, aided by the very slow intermolecular charge and energy transfers due to the well separated molecular packing arrangement. The mechanisms can be general for tuning the properties of chromophores in different phases for various important applications.
Exciton superradiance in aggregates: The effect of disorder, higher order exciton-phonon coupling and dimensionality

Abstract:In this paper a detailed theoretical analysis is presented of the temperature dependent radiative decay in aggregates of pseudoisocyanine (PIC). Our approach extends the original linear exciton-phonon coupling model used by Spano, Kuklinsky, and Mukamel [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 212 (1990)] including static disorder and second order exciton-phonon interactions. It is shown that for a one-dimensional exciton model neither of these additional effects alone or in combination with linear electron–phonon coupling can explain the steep rise in radiative lifetime at 40 K observed in the J-aggregate of PIC. However, when the aggregate assembles into a two-dimensional bricklike structure its radiative dynamics can be simulated, with linear exciton-optical phonon coupling as the only source for exciton scattering. Exciton-phonon scattering transfers oscillator strength from the k=0 state to other band states and also generates a nonequilibrium population among the exciton states, which persists during the superradiant decay. These effects together explain the marked temperature dependence of the radiative lifetime of the PIC J aggregate. When disorder limits the coherence length at low temperatures to a few molecules, as seems the case in several light harvesting complexes, the exciton population can equilibrate on the time scale of the superradiance. This situation pertains to the strong collision limit of the master equation, where the radiative decay is insensitive to details of the electron–phonon coupling, but only senses change in the thermal population among the exciton states.

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of light emission is a crucial parameter of supramolecular aggregates that can be tuned by the molecular design of the monomeric species. Here, we report on a strong variation of the fluorescence quantum yield due to different phases of aggregation for the case of a perylene bisimide dye. In particular, a change of the dominant aggregation character from H- to J-type within the first aggregation steps is found, explaining the observed dramatic change in quantum yield. This behaviour is rationalised by means of a systematic study of the intermolecular potential energy surfaces using the time-dependent density functional based tight-binding (TD-DFTB) method. This provides a correlation between structural changes and a coupling strength and supports the notion of H- type stacked dimers and J-type stack-slipped dimers. The exciton-vibrational level structure is modelled by means of an excitonic dimer model including two effective vibrational modes per monomer. Calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra are found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental ones, thus supporting the conclusion on the aggregation behaviour.
Alignment of fibrous J-aggregates and the resulting macroscopic optical anisotropy observed in static solution

Abstract:J-aggregates, which are supramolecular assemblies that exhibit unique optical properties owing to their excitonic interactions, have potential applications in artificial light-harvesting systems and fluorescence biosensing. Although J-aggregates are formed in solution, in situ observations of their structures and behaviors in solution remain scarce. In this study, we investigated the J-aggregates of 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate [DiIC18(3)] in methanol/water (M/W) binary solvents using fluorescence imaging as well as polarized absorption and fluorescence measurements to explore the relationship between their structure and macroscopic optical properties under static conditions. Fluorescence images revealed that the DiIC18(3) J-aggregates have fibrous structures in the M/W = 44/56 (v/v) binary solvent. We measured the polarization-angle dependence of the fluorescence intensity of the fibrous J-aggregates to determine the direction of their transition dipole moment. Furthermore, the J-band absorbance was dependent on the polarization angle of the linearly polarized incident light, even in the absence of an external force such as that generated by a flow or stirring, indicating that the J-aggregates “spontaneously” aligned in solution. We also monitored the time evolution of the degree of alignment of the fibrous J-aggregates, which revealed that the formation and elongation of the fibers induced their alignment, resulting in the observed macroscopic optical anisotropy in solution.

Abstract:Sub-macroscopic order collective vibrational-mode phase transition theory is presented to explain the exceptional properties of the J-band. In the theory, the occurrence and properties of the J-band are attributed to strong intermolecular vibrational-vibrational interaction. In aggregates, when the intermolecular vibrational-vibrational coupling is strong enough to overcome the disorder caused by thermal motion and vibration, the vibrational states of the molecules can form sub-macroscopic order collective vibrational modes through phase transition. The J-band is the spectral behavior of the mode. The condition for the occurrence of the mode determines the phase transition behavior and the selectivity of the molecules. The characteristics of the interaction of this mode with light determine the J-band properties. The properties are quite different from that of the normal case. One of the most prominent effects is the disappearance of the vibronic structure in the absorption band. This makes the J-band, the absorption spectrum of the mode, a sharp band located at the red edge of the normal absorption band.
Computational Studies on the Excited State Decay Rates in Aggregates of Two‐coordinate Cu (I) Complexes: Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence and Aggregation Induced Emis

Abstract:Two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes have attracted great interest recently because of the rich photophysical property in solid state, including the aggregation‐induced thermal activated delayed fluorescence. Here, we summarize our theoretical investigations on the excited state structure and decay dynamics for the two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes in solution phase and solid state by the thermal vibration correlation function rate formalism we developed earlier coupled with time‐dependent density‐functional theory within polarizable continuum model and hybrid quantum and molecular mechanics. First, for the CAACCu (I)Cl complex, we found that the nature of the excited state undergoes a change from metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (MLCT) in solution to hybrid halogen‐to‐ligand charge transfer and MLCT in solid state. The bending vibrations of the CCuCl and CuCN bonds are restricted in aggregates, reducing the non‐radiative decay rate to cause strong solid‐state fluorescence. Second, for CAACCu (I)Cz, we found that both intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) are enhanced by 2–4 orders of magnitudes upon aggregation, leading to highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The enhanced ISC and rISC rates can be attributed to the increase of the metal proportion in the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to an enhanced spin−orbit coupling between S 1 and T 1. The reaction barriers for ISC and rISC are much lower in solution than that in aggregate phase resulting in a decrease in energy gap and an increase in the relative reorganization energy through bending the angle ∠C − Cu − N for T 1 . Our theoretical studies provide a clear rationalization for the highly efficient solid‐state luminescence character of two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes and may clarify the ongoing dispute on the understanding of the high TADF quantum efficiency.

Abstract:Deep understanding of the inherent luminescence mechanism is essential for the development of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials and applications. We first note that the intermolecular excitonic coupling is much weaker in strength than the intramolecular electron-vibration coupling for a majority of newly termed AIEgens, which leads to the emission peak position insensitive to excitonic coupling, hence the conventional excitonic model for J-aggregation cannot effectively explain their AIE phenomena. Then, using multiscale computational approach coupled with our self-developed thermal vibration correlation function rate formalism and transition-state theory, we quantitatively investigate the aggregation effect on both the radiative and the nonradiative decays of molecular excited states. For radiative decay processes, we propose that the lowest excited state could convert from a transition dipole-forbidden "dark" state to a dipole-allowed "bright" state upon aggregation. For the radiationless processes, we demonstrate the blockage of nonradiative decay via vibration relaxation (BNR-VR) in harmonic region or the removal of nonradiative decay via isomerization (RNR-ISO) or minimum energy crossing point (RNR-MECP) beyond harmonic region in a variety of AIE aggregates. Our theoretical work not only justifies a plethora of experimental results but also makes reliable predictions on molecular design and mechanism that can be experimentally verified. Looking forward, we believe this review will benefit the deep understanding about the universality of AIE phenomenon and further extending the scope of AIE systems with novel applications.
