Abstract:In this paper, we study Gromov hyperbolicity and related parameters, that represent how close (locally) a metric space is to a tree from a metric point of view. The study of Gromov hyperbolicity for geodesic metric spaces can be reduced to the study of graph hyperbolicity. The main contribution of this paper is a new characterization of the hyperbolicity of graphs. This characterization has algorithmic implications in the field of large-scale network analysis. A sharp estimate of graph hyperbolicity is useful, e.g., in embedding an undirected graph into hyperbolic space with minimum distortion [Verbeek and Suri, SoCG'14]. The hyperbolicity of a graph can be computed in polynomial-time, however it is unlikely that it can be done in subcubic time. This makes this parameter difficult to compute or to approximate on large graphs. Using our new characterization of graph hyperbolicity, we provide a simple factor 8 approximation algorithm for computing the hyperbolicity of an $n$-vertex graph $G=(V,E)$ in optimal time $O(n^2)$ (assuming that the input is the distance matrix of the graph). This algorithm leads to constant factor approximations of other graph-parameters related to hyperbolicity (thinness, slimness, and insize). We also present the first efficient algorithms for exact computation of these parameters. All of our algorithms can be used to approximate the hyperbolicity of a geodesic metric space. We also show that a similar characterization of hyperbolicity holds for all geodesic metric spaces endowed with a geodesic spanning tree. Along the way, we prove that any complete geodesic metric space $(X,d)$ has such a geodesic spanning tree. We hope that this fundamental result can be useful in other contexts.

Geodesic Trees and Exceptional Directions in FPP on Hyperbolic Groups

Abstract:We continue the study of the geometry of infinite geodesics in first passage percolation (FPP) on Gromov-hyperbolic groups G, initiated by Benjamini-Tessera and developed further by the authors. It was shown earlier by the authors that, given any fixed direction $\xi\in \partial G$, and under mild conditions on the passage time distribution, there exists almost surely a unique semi-infinite FPP geodesic from each $v\in G$ to $\xi$. Also, these geodesics coalesce to form a tree. Our main topic of study is the set of (random) exceptional directions for which uniqueness or coalescence fails. We study these directions in the context of two random geodesics trees: one formed by the union of all geodesics starting at a given base point, and the other formed by the union of all semi-infinite geodesics in a given direction $\xi\in \partial G$. We show that, under mild conditions, the set of exceptional directions almost surely has a strictly smaller Hausdorff dimension than the boundary, and hence has measure zero with respect to the Patterson-Sullivan measure. We also establish an upper bound on the maximum number of disjoint geodesics in the same direction. For groups that are not virtually free, we show that almost surely exceptional directions exist and are dense in $\partial G$. When the topological dimension of $\partial G$ is greater than one, we establish the existence of uncountably many exceptional directions. When the topological dimension of $\partial G$ is $n$, we prove the existence of directions $\xi$ with at least $(n+1)$ disjoint geodesics. The questions answered here have been considered before for FPP on euclidean lattices, but have only been satisfactorily answered for planar exactly solvable models of last passage percolation. Our results exhibit new features in higher dimensions.

Abstract:Suppose G is a group that splits as or , where A , B , C are relatively hyperbolic groups, the monomorphisms and are quasiisometric embeddings of pairs, and G is hyperbolic relative to a natural collection of subgroups. We show that C has finite relative height in G if and only if C is relatively quasiconvex in G . This extends the work of Pal, giving an exact analogue of a theorem of Mj in the context of relatively hyperbolic groups and partially answers a question of Hruska–Wise.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a combination theorem for a relatively acylindrical graph of relatively hyperbolic groups (Theorem 1.1). Here, we are extending the technique of [Tom21] and constructing Bowditch boundary of the fundamental group of graph of groups. Suppose G(Y) is a graph of relatively hyperbolic groups such that edge groups are relatively quasi-convex in adjacent vertex groups. Also, assume that the fundamental group of G(Y) is relatively hyperbolic. Then we show that the edge groups of G(Y) have finite relative height (Definition 1.5) if and only if they are relatively quasi-convex (Theorem 1.6). In the last section, we give an application.

Abstract:We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself compatible with a relative cyclic splitting. Two $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees are \emph{equivalent} if they are both compatible with a common tree in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. We give a similar description of the Gromov boundary of the graph of maximally-cyclic splittings.

Abstract:Stern-Gerlach experiment is a paradigm of measurement theory in quantum mechanics. Notwithstanding several analysis given in literature, no clear understanding of the apparent collapse has been given so far. Indeed, one can imagine a Stern-Gerlach device where all environmental effects are removed and ask the question on how the measurement goes on. In this letter we will prove that a the Stern-Gerlach device behaves as a true measurement apparatus, as expected by the Copenaghen interpretation, by the Ehrenfest theorem. In this way we recover, by other means, a limit on the Stern-Gerlach device, given by Bohm, based on scrambling of phases due to a large oscillation frequency.

Manhattan geodesics and the boundary of the space of metric structures on hyperbolic groups

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group $\Gamma$, we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of metric structures on $\Gamma$ equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Techimüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudo metrics including those coming from actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, real trees and coned-off Cayley graphs. As corollaries we deduce length spectrum rigidity results, regularity results for Manhattan curves, optimal growth rate results for Anosov representations and results regarding continuous extensions of translation distance functions to the space of geodesic currents. Using our results for geodesic currents we settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.

Geodesic trees in last passage percolation and some related problems

Abstract:For the exactly solvable model of exponential last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, it is known that given any non-axial direction, all the semi-infinite geodesics starting from points in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in that direction almost surely coalesce, thereby forming a geodesic tree which has only one end. It is widely understood that the geodesic trees are important objects in understanding the geometry of the LPP landscape. In this paper we study several natural questions about these geodesic trees and their intersections. In particular, we obtain optimal (up to constants) upper and lower bounds for the (power law) tails of the height and the volume of the backward sub-tree rooted at a fixed point. We also obtain bounds for the probability that the sub-tree contains a specific vertex, e.g. the sub-tree in the direction $(1,1)$ rooted at the origin contains the vertex $-(n,n)$, which answers a question analogous to the well-known midpoint problem in the context of semi-infinite geodesics. Furthermore, we obtain bounds for the probability that a pair of intersecting geodesics both pass through a given vertex. These results are interesting in their own right as well as useful in several other applications.

Abstract:In this paper we construct spanning trees in hyperbolic graphs that represent their hyperbolic compactification in a good way: so that the tree has a bounded number of distinct rays to each boundary point. The bound depends only on the (Assouad) dimension of the boundary. As a corollary we sharpen a result of Gromov which says that from every hyperbolic graph with bounded degrees one can construct a tree outside the graph with a continuous surjection from the ends of the tree onto the hyperbolic boundary such that the surjection is finite-to-one. We will construct a tree with these properties inside the hyperbolic graph, which in addition is also a spanning tree of that graph.

Refined Counting of Geodesic Segments in the Hyperbolic Plane

Abstract:For $\Gamma$ a cofinite Fuchsian group, and $l$ a fixed closed geodesic, we study the asymptotics of the number of those images of $l$ that have a prescribed orientation and distance from $l$ less than or equal to $X$. We give a new concrete proof of the error bound $O(X^{2/3})$ that appears in the works of Good and Hejhal. Furthermore, we prove a new bound $O(X^{1/2}\log{X})$ for the mean square of the error. For particular arithmetic groups, we provide interpretations in terms of correlation sums of the number of ideals of norm at most $X$ in associated number fields, generalizing previous examples due to Hejhal.

Rationality of the Gromov Boundary of Hyperbolic Groups

Abstract:In [BBM21], Belk, Bleak and Matucci proved that hyperbolic groups can be seen as subgroups of the rational group. In order to do so, they associated a tree of atoms to each hyperbolic group. Not so many connections between this tree and the literature on hyperbolic groups were known. In this paper, we prove an atom-version of the fellow traveler property and exponential divergence, together with other similar results. These leads to several consequences: a bound from above of the topological dimension of the Gromov boundary, the definition of an augmented tree which is quasi-isometric to the Cayley graph and a synchronous recognizer which described the equivalence relation given by the quotient map defined from the end of the tree onto the Gromov boundary.

Abstract:Gromov hyperbolicity of a metric space measures the distance of the space from a perfect tree-like structure. The measure has a "worst-case" aspect to it, in the sense that it detects a region in the space which sees the maximum deviation from tree-like structure. In this article we introduce an "average-case" version of Gromov hyperbolicity, which detects whether the "most of the space", with respect to a given probability measure, looks like a tree. The main result of the paper is that if this average hyperbolicity is small, then the space can be approximately embedded in a tree. The proof uses a weighted version of Szemeredi's regularity lemma from graph theory. The result applies to Gromov hyperbolic spaces as well, since average hyperbolicity is bounded above by Gromov hyperbolicity. As an application, we give a construction of hierarchically organized pure states in any model of a spin glass that satisfies the Parisi ultrametricity ansatz.

Foundations of geometric approximate group theory

Abstract:We develop the foundations of a geometric theory of countably-infinite approximate groups, extending work of Björklund and the second-named author. Our theory is based on the notion of a quasi-isometric quasi-action (qiqac) of an approximate group on a metric space. More specifically, we introduce a geometric notion of finite generation for approximate group and prove that every geometrically finitely-generated approximate group admits a geometric qiqac on a proper geodesic metric space. We then show that all such spaces are quasi-isometric, hence can be used to associate a canonical QI type with every geometrically finitely-generated approximate group. This in turn allows us to define geometric invariants of approximate groups using QI invariants of metric spaces. Among the invariants we consider are asymptotic dimension, finiteness properties, numbers of ends and growth type. For geometrically finitely-generated approximate groups of polynomial growth we derive a version of Gromov's polynomial growth theorem, based on work of Hrushovski and Breuillard--Green--Tao. A particular focus is on qiqacs on hyperbolic spaces. Our strongest results are obtained for approximate groups which admit a geometric qiqac on a proper geodesic hyperbolic space. For such "hyperbolic approximate groups" we establish a number of fundamental properties in analogy with the case of hyperbolic groups. For example, we show that their asymptotic dimension is one larger than the topological dimension of their Gromov boundary and that - under some mild assumption of being "non-elementary" - they have exponential growth and act minimally on their Gromov boundary. We also study convex cocompact qiqacs on hyperbolic spaces. Using the theory of Morse boundaries, we extend some of our results concerning qiqacs on hyperbolic spaces to qiqacs on proper geodesic metric spaces with non-trivial Morse boundary.

Abstract:We characterise hyperbolic groups in terms of quasigeodesics in the Cayley graph forming regular languages. We also obtain a quantitative characterisation of hyperbolicity of geodesic metric spaces by the non-existence of certain local (3,0)-quasigeodesic loops. As an application we make progress towards a question of Shapiro regarding groups admitting a uniquely geodesic Cayley graph.

Abstract:For a finitely generated group $G$, we introduce an asymmetric pseudometric on projectivized deformation spaces of $G$-trees, using stretching factors of $G$-equivariant Lipschitz maps, that generalizes the Lipschitz metric on Outer space and is an analogue of the Thurston metric on Teichmüller space. We show that in the case of irreducible $G$-trees distances are always realized by minimal stretch maps, can be computed in terms of hyperbolic translation lengths, and geodesics exist. We then study displacement functions on projectivized deformation spaces of $G$-trees and classify automorphisms of $G$. As an application, we prove existence of train track representatives for irreducible automorphisms of virtually free groups and nonelementary generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups that contain no solvable Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,n)$ with $n\geq 2$.

Abstract:Stochastic embeddings of finite metric spaces into graph-theoretic trees have proven to be a vital tool for constructing approximation algorithms in theoretical computer science. In the present work, we build out some of the basic theory of stochastic embeddings in the infinite setting with an aim towards applications to Lipschitz free space theory. We prove that proper metric spaces stochastically embedding into $\mathbb{R}$-trees have Lipschitz free spaces isomorphic to $L^1$-spaces. We then undergo a systematic study of stochastic embeddability of Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces into $\mathbb{R}$-trees by way of stochastic embeddability of their boundaries into ultrametric spaces. The following are obtained as our main results: (1) Every snowflake of a compact, finite Nagata-dimensional metric space stochastically embeds into an ultrametric space and has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell^1$. (2) The Lipschitz free space over hyperbolic $n$-space is isomorphic to the Lipschitz free space over Euclidean $n$-space. (3) Every infinite, finitely generated hyperbolic group stochastically embeds into an $\mathbb{R}$-tree, has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell^1$, and admits a proper, uniformly Lipschitz affine action on $\ell^1$.

Abstract:We consider several algorithmic problems concerning geodesics in finitely generated groups. We show that the three geodesic problems considered by Miasnikov et al [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0807.1032" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0807.1032">arXiv:0807.1032</a>] are polynomial-time reducible to each other. We study two new geodesic problems which arise in a previous paper of the authors and Fusy [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0902.0202" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0902.0202">arXiv:0902.0202</a>] .
