Abstract:It is well known that the traditional Jensen inequality is proved by lower bounding the given convex function, $f(x)$, by the tangential affine function that passes through the point $(E\{X\},f(E\{X\}))$, where $E\{X\}$ is the expectation of the random variable $X$. While this tangential affine function yields the tightest lower bound among all lower bounds induced by affine functions that are tangential to $f$, it turns out that when the function $f$ is just part of a more complicated expression whose expectation is to be bounded, the tightest lower bound might belong to a tangential affine function that passes through a point different than $(E\{X\},f(E\{X\}))$. In this paper, we take advantage of this observation, by optimizing the point of tangency with regard to the specific given expression, in a variety of cases, and thereby derive several families of inequalities, henceforth referred to as ``Jensen-like'' inequalities, which are new to the best knowledge of the author. The degree of tightness and the potential usefulness of these inequalities is demonstrated in several application examples related to information theory.

Abstract:<p>We discuss a model of a two-person, non-cooperative stochastic game, inspired by the discrete version of the red-and-black gambling problem presented by Dubins and Savage. Assume that two players hold certain amounts of money. At each stage of the game they simultaneously bid some part of their current fortune and the probability of winning or loosing depends on their bids. In many models of the red-and-black game it is assumed that the win probability is a function of the quotient of the bid of the first player and the sum of both bids. In the literature some additional properties, like concavity or super-multiplicativity are assumed in order to ensure that the bold and timid strategies form a Nash equilibrium, which turns out to be unique in several cases. Our aim is to provide a generalization in which the probability of winning is a two-variable function which depends on both bids. We introduce two new functional inequalities whose solutions lead to win probability functions for which a Nash equilibrium is realized by the bold-timid strategy. Since both inequalities may appear as not quite intuitive, we discuss them in a separate section of the paper and we provide some illustrating examples.</p>

Abstract:Jensen's inequality is ubiquitous in measure and probability theory, statistics, machine learning, information theory and many other areas of mathematics and data science. It states that, for any convex function $f\colon K \to \mathbb{R}$ defined on a convex domain $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and any random variable $X$ taking values in $K$, $\mathbb{E}[f(X)] \geq f(\mathbb{E}[X])$. In this paper, sharp upper and lower bounds on $\mathbb{E}[f(X)]$, termed ``graph convex hull bounds'', are derived for arbitrary functions $f$ on arbitrary domains $K$, thereby extensively generalizing Jensen's inequality. The derivation of these bounds necessitates the investigation of the convex hull of the graph of $f$, which can be challenging for complex functions. On the other hand, once these inequalities are established, they hold, just like Jensen's inequality, for \emph{any} $K$-valued random variable $X$. Therefore, these bounds are of particular interest in cases where $f$ is relatively simple and $X$ is complicated or unknown. Both finite- and infinite-dimensional domains and codomains of $f$ are covered as well as analogous bounds for conditional expectations and Markov operators.

Abstract:In this paper functions $f:D\to\mathbb{R}$ satisfying the inequality \[ f\Big(\frac{x+y}{2}\Big)\leq\frac12f(x)+\frac12f(y) +\varphi\Big(\frac{x-y}{2}\Big) \qquad(x,y\in D) \] are studied, where $D$ is a nonempty convex subset of a real linear space $X$ and $\varphi:\{\frac12(x-y) : x,y \in D\}\to\mathbb{R}$ is a so-called error function. In this situation $f$ is said to be $\varphi$-Jensen convex. The main results show that for all $\varphi$-Jensen convex function $f:D\to\mathbb{R}$, for all rational $\lambda\in[0,1]$ and $x,y\in D$, the following inequality holds \[ f(\lambda x+(1-\lambda)y) \leq \lambda f(x)+(1-\lambda)f(y)+\sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{1}{2^k}\varphi\big(\mbox{dist}(2^k\lambda,\mathbb{Z})\cdot(x-y)\big). \] The infinite series on the right hand side is always convergent, moreover, for all rational $\lambda\in[0,1]$, it can be evaluated as a finite sum.

Abstract:A gambler walks into a hypothetical fair casino with a very real dollar bill, but by the time he leaves he's exchanged the dollar for a random amount of money. What is lost in the process? It may be that the gambler walks out at the end of the day, after a roller-coaster ride of winning and losing, with his dollar still intact, or maybe even with two dollars. But what the gambler loses the moment he places his first bet is position. He exchanges one distribution of money for a distribution of lesser quality, from which he cannot return. Our first discussion in this work connects known results of economic inequality and majorization to the probability theory of gambling and Martingales. We provide a simple proof that fair gambles cannot increase the Lorenz curve, and we also constructively demonstrate that any sequence of non-increasing Lorenz curves corresponds to at least one Martingale. We next consider the efficiency of gambles. If all fair gambles are available then one can move down the lattice of distributions defined by the Lorenz ordering. However, the step from one distribution to the next is not unique. Is there a sense of efficiency with which one can move down the Lorenz stream? One approach would be to minimize the average total volume of money placed on the table. In this case, it turns out that implementing part of the strategy using private randomness can help reduce the need for the casino's randomness, resulting in less money on the table that the casino cannot get its hands on.

In this note, we study a transition probability on the finite words space of an iterated function system, whose invariant set is the unit interval. Abstract:In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the discrete Jensen inequality to be satisfied for real (not necessarily nonnegative) weights. The result generalizes and completes the classical Jensen–Steffensen inequality. The validity of the strict inequality is studied. As applications, we first give the form of our result for strongly convex functions, then we study discrete quasi-arithmetic means with real (not necessarily nonnegative) weights, and finally we refine the inequality obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore a model of an N-player, non-cooperative stochastic game, drawing inspiration from the discrete formulation of the red-and-black gambling problem, as initially introduced by Dubins and Savage in 1965. We extend upon the work of Pontiggia from 2007, presenting a main theorem that broadens the conditions under which bold strategies by all players can achieve a Nash equilibrium. This is obtained through the introduction of a novel functional inequality, which serves as a key analytical tool in our study. This inequality enables us to circumvent the restrictive conditions of super-multiplicativity and super-additivity prevalent in the works of Pontiggia and others. We conclude this paper with a series of illustrative examples that demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, notably highlighting its ability to accommodate a broader spectrum of probability functions than previously recognized in the existing literature.

Abstract:Standard casino games such as roulette offer (almost) symmetric 50%-50% bets in a menu with numerous positively skewed gambles (with equal expected value). It is challenging to rationalize the popularity of casino gambling with traditional risk preferences. Yet, it is even more challenging to explain a more specific point that gamblers often choose (almost) symmetric 50%-50% gambles when casino offers positively skewed gambles. In this paper, we demonstrate that many well-known theories of decision making under risk cannot explain the finding that people place (almost) symmetric 50%-50% bets in roulette gambling. An expected utility maximizer either does not gamble on roulette at all (when utility function is concave or linear) or prefers to gamble on the longest possible shot and avoids (almost) symmetric 50%-50% bets (when utility function is sufficiently convex). Similarly, in Yaari's dual model, a decision maker either does not gamble on roulette (when probability weighting function is convex or linear) or gambles on the longest possible shot avoiding (almost) symmetric 50%-50% bets (when probability weighting function is sufficiently concave in the neighborhood of zero probability). In Viscusi's prospective reference theory, it can be optimal to gamble on several roulette numbers (rather than on one number) but not on one half of roulette numbers. A gambler who maximizes prospect theory never places a single bet on one half of roulette numbers due to the assumption of loss aversion.

Then, we derive an improvement of the Jensen inequality with regard to h ‐convexity. As an application, our main results are applied in deriving refinements of power mean inequalities and the Hölder inequality. Finally, we obtain more accurate estimates for f ‐divergences, important in the information theory.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate continuity properties of functions $f:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}_+$ that satisfy the $(p,q)$-Jensen convexity inequality $$ f\big(H_p(x,y)\big)\leq H_q(f(x),f(y)) \qquad(x,y>0), $$ where $H_p$ stands for the $p$th power (or Hölder) mean. One of the main results shows that there exist discontinuous multiplicative functions that are $(p,p)$-Jensen convex for all positive rational number $p$. A counterpart of this result states that if $f$ is $(p,p)$-Jensen convex for all $p\in P\subseteq\mathbb{R}_+$, where $P$ is a set of positive Lebesgue measure, then $f$ must be continuous.

Abstract:We derive a new criterion for a real-valued function $u$ to be in the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(\R^n)$. This criterion consists of comparing the value of a functional $\int f(u)$ with the values of the same functional applied to convolutions of $u$ with a Dirac sequence. The difference of these values converges to zero as the convolutions approach $u$, and we prove that the rate of convergence to zero is connected to regularity: $u\in W^{1,2}$ if and only if the convergence is sufficiently fast. We finally apply our criterium to a minimization problem with constraints, where regularity of minimizers cannot be deduced from the Euler-Lagrange equation.

Abstract:A classical problem posed in 1992 by Huijsmans and de Pagter asks whether, for every positive operator on a Banach lattice with spectrum , the inequality holds true. While the problem remains unsolved in its entirety, a positive solution is known in finite dimensions. In the broader context of ordered Banach spaces, Drnovšek provided an infinite-dimensional counterexample. In this note, we demonstrate the existence of finite-dimensional counterexamples, specifically on the ice cream cone and on a polyhedral cone in . On the other hand, taking inspiration from the notion of -isometries, we establish that each counterexample must contain a Jordan block of size at least .
