Abstract:Functional electrolyte is the key to stabilize the highly reductive lithium (Li) metal anode and the high-voltage cathode for long-life, high-energy-density rechargeable Li metal batteries (LMBs). However, fundamental mechanisms on the interactions between reactive electrodes and electrolytes are still not well understood. Recently localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) are emerging as a promising electrolyte design strategy for LMBs. Here, we use LHCEs as an ideal platform to investigate the fundamental correlation between the reactive characteristics of the inner solvation sheath on electrode surfaces due to their unique solvation structures. The effects of a series of LHCEs with model electrolyte solvents (carbonate, sulfone, phosphate, and ether) on the stability of high-voltage LMBs are systematically studied. The stabilities of electrodes in different LHCEs indicate the intrinsic synergistic effects between the salt and the solvent when they coexist on electrode surfaces. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal an intriguing general rule that the strong interactions between the salt and the solvent in the inner solvation sheath promote their intermolecular proton/charge transfer reactions, which dictates the properties of the electrode/electrolyte interphases and thus the battery performances.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries possess overwhelming energy density of 2654 Wh kg(-1), and are considered as the next-generation battery technology for energy demanding applications. Flooded electrolytes are ubiquitously employed in cells to ensure sufficient redox kinetics and preclude the interference of the electrolyte depletion due to side reactions with the lithium metal anode. This strategy is capable of enabling long-lasting, high-capacity and excellent-rate battery performances, but it mask the requirements of practical Li-S batteries, where high-sulfur-loading/content and lean electrolyte are prerequisite to realize the energy-dense Li-S batteries. Sparingly and highly solvating electrolytes have emerged as effective yet simple approaches to decrease the electrolyte/sulfur ratio through altering sulfur species and exerting new reaction pathways. Sparingly solvating electrolytes are characterized by few free solvents to solvate lithium polysulfides, rendering a quasi-solid sulfur conversion and decoupling the reaction mechanisms from electrolyte quantity used in cells; while highly solvating electrolytes adopt highdonicity or high-permittivity solvents and take their advantages of strong solvation ability toward polysulfide intermediates, thereby favoring the polysulfide formation and stabilizing unique radicals, which subsequently accelerate redox kinetics. Both solvation chemistry approaches have their respective features to allow the operation of cells under electrolyte-starved conditions. This Review discusses their unique features and basic physicochemical properties in the working Li-S batteries, presents remaining technical and scientific issues and provides future directions for the electrolyte chemistry to attain highenergy Li-S batteries. Abstract:Local high concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have been proved to be one of the most promising systems to stabilize both high voltage cathodes and Li metal anode for next-generation batteries. However, the solvation structures and interactions among different species in LHCEs are still convoluted, which bottlenecks the further breakthrough on electrolyte development. Here, it is demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding interaction between diluent and solvent is crucial for the construction of LHCEs and corresponding interphase chemistries. The 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl trifluoromethane sulfonate (TFSF) is selected as diluent with the solvent dimethoxy-ethane (DME) to prepare a non-flammable LHCE for high voltage LMBs. This is first find that the hydrogen bonding interaction between TFSF and DME solvent tailors the electrolyte solvation structures by weakening the coordination of DME molecules to Li+ cations and allows more participation of anions in the first solvation shell, leading to the formation of aggregates (AGGs) clusters which are conducive to generating inorganic solid/cathodic electrolyte interphases (SEI/CEIs). The proposed TFSF based LHCE enables the Li||NCM811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1O2) batteries to realize >80% capacity retention with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% for 230 cycles under aggressive conditions (NCM811 cathode: 3.4 mAh cm(-2), cut-off voltage: 4.4 V, and 20 mu m Li foil).

Abstract:A new solvation structure‐related model, focusing on the coordination chemistry principle, is presented for the quantitative design of electrolytes in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). The formulated electrolyte exhibits high compatibility with the novel hybrid hard carbon‐silicon/carbon‐based (HC‐Si/C) anode and demonstrates a reliable high‐voltage operation (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode), enabling the configured HC‐Si/C. Electrolyte is critical for transporting lithium‐ion (Li+) in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, there is no universally applicable principle for designing an optimal electrolyte. In most cases, the design process relies on empirical experiences and is often treated as highly confidential proprietary information. Herein, a solvation structure‐related model for the quantitative design of electrolytes is introduced, focusing on the principles of coordination chemistry. As a paradigmatic example, a high‐voltage electrolyte (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode) aimed at achieving a high energy density and fast charging LIB, which is specifically composed of an emerging, well‐constructed hybrid hard carbon‐silicon/carbon‐based anode, and lithium cobalt oxide cathode, is developed. Not only the functions of each electrolyte component at the molecular scale within the Li+ solvation structure are analyzed but also an interfacial model is introduced to elucidate their relationship with the battery performance. This study represents a pioneering effort in developing a methodology to guide electrolyte design, in which the mutual effects of the Li+ de‐solvation process and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the electrode surface are explored concurrently to understand the root cause of superior performance. This innovative approach establishes a new paradigm in electrolyte design, providing valuable insights at the molecular level.

Abstract:The electrolytes in energy-dense lithium metal batteries (LMBs) face the challenge of being compatible with both the lithium anode and the high voltage cathodes. Adjusting the solvation structures of the electrolytes by regulating the interaction between ions and solvents is an effective strategy to improve the stability of LMBs. Herein, lithium trifluoroacetate (LiTFA) endowed with high donor number is introduced into ether-based electrolytes as an additive to regulate the solvation structure and further stabilize the interphase as well as accelerate the interfacial kinetic of LMBs. Due to the strong interaction between TFA- with Li+, the anion-rich solvation structure with reduced solvent coordination capability is constructed, contributing to the formation of inorganic-rich interphase layers and facilitate charge transfer reaction. Consequently, the designed electrolyte improves the reversibility of Li plating/stripping with high Coulombic efficiency of 99.24% and enables long-term cycling of Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) over 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 84.37% under the condition of lean electrolyte, limited Li source and conventional Li-salt concentration. This work provides an effective and low-cost strategy to adjust the solvation structure and improve the stability of LMBs without largely sacrificing the intrinsic physicochemical property (viscosity, wettability, ionic conductivity etc.) of electrolytes.

Abstract:The practical application of Li metal batteries (LMBs) is severely hindered by the unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI). In this work, it is revealed that the unstable SEI mainly originates from the kinetic instability of Li+‐solvation structures in the electrolyte which can result in continuous electrolyte decomposition and nonuniform Li deposition. To address this issue, preferential adsorption of anion‐dominated solvation complexes (A‐Coms) are established by integrating preferentially adsorbed anions (NO3− and Li2S8) into the Li+‐solvation structures. In these structures, the locations of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level shift from solvents to anions, rendering a relieved electrolyte decomposition and an anion‐derived SEI formation. Meanwhile, the anions in the A‐coms preferentially adsorb on the Li metal surfaces due to their stronger chemisorption capability toward lithium metal anodes (LMAs) compared to the solvent molecules, effectively shielding solvent molecules from parasitic reaction with LMAs. Furthermore, the anion‐derived SEI exhibits high Li‐ion conductivity and low Li atom adhesion energy, which can facilitate uniform Li deposition. Consequently, this electrolyte can enable a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of 98.5% over 500 cycles and a stable cycling under realistic testing conditions with a high‐energy‐density of 310 W h kg−1 based on a full cell configuration.

Abstract:The low reversibility of Li deposition/stripping in conventional carbonate electrolytes hinders the development of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we proposed a combination of solvents with a moderate donor number (DN) and LiNO3 as the sole salt, which has rarely been attempted due to its low solubility or dissociation degree in common solvents. It is found that the DN value of solvents is highly correlated to the reversibility of Li deposition behavior when LiNO3 is applied as the sole salt. The combination of LiNO3 and solvents with moderate DN behaves like a quasi-concentrated electrolyte even at a common or moderate concentration, while neither the solvents with poor solubility and low dissociation for LiNO3 (which usually corresponds to a low DN) nor the solvents with high dissociation for LiNO3 (which usually corresponds to an overly high DN) can achieve a high reversibility for low conductivity or excessive solvent decomposition. As a result, a Coulombic efficiency as high as 99.6% for Li deposition/stripping is achieved with the optimized combination. We believe this work will give a better understanding of the role of anions and solvents in the regulation of the solvation structure, and DN can be utilized as an important guideline to sieve suitable solvents for LiNO3 as the main salt to exhibit intriguing properties beyond traditional cognition.

Abstract:While the formation of an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a crucial role, the persistent challenge lies in the formation of an organic-rich SEI due to the high solvent ratio in low-concentration electrolytes (LCEs), which hinders the achievement of high-performance lithium metal batteries. Herein, by incorporating di-fluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) as a non-solvating cosolvent, a solvation structure dominated by anions is introduced in the innovative LCE, leading to the creation of a durable and stable inorganic-rich SEI. Leveraging this electrolyte design, the Li||NCM83 cell demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining 82.85% of its capacity over 500 cycles at 1 C. Additionally, Li||NCM83 cell with a low N/P ratio (≈2.57) and reduced electrolyte volume (30 µL) retain 87.58% of its capacity after 150 cycles at 0.5 C. Direct molecular information is utilized to reveal a strong correlation between solvation structures and reduction sequences, proving the anion-dominate solvation structure can impedes the preferential reduction of solvents and constructs an inorganic-rich SEI. These findings shed light on the pivotal role of solvation structures in dictating SEI composition and battery performance, offering valuable insights for the design of advanced electrolytes for next-generation lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The water-in-salt electrolyte (WISE) features intimate interactions between a cation and anion, which induces the formation of an anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and expands the aqueous electrolyte voltage window to >3.0 V. Although further increasing the salt concentration (even to >60 molality (m)) can gradually improve water stability, issues about cost and practical feasibility are concerned. An alternative approach is to intensify ion-solvent interactions in the inner solvation structure by shielding off outward electrostatic attractions from nearby ions. Here, we design an "overcrowded" electrolyte using the non-polar, hydrogen-bonding 1,4-dioxane (DX) as an overcrowding agent, thereby achieving a robust LiF-enriched SEI and wide electrolyte operation window (3.7 V) with a low salt concentration (<2 m). As a result, the electrochemical performance of aqueous Li4Ti5O12/LiMn2O4 full cells can be substantially improved (88.5% capacity retention after 200 cycles, at 0.57 C). This study points out a promising strategy to develop low-cost and stable high-voltage aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries with durable Na-metal stability, shuttle-free cyclability, and long lifespan are promising to large-scale energy storages. However, meeting these stringent requirements poses huge challenges with the existing electrolytes. Herein, a localized saturated electrolyte (LSE) is proposed with 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF) as an inner sheath solvent, which represents a new category of electrolyte for Na-S system. Unlike the traditional high concentration electrolytes, the LSE is realized with a low salt-to-solvent ratio and low diluent-to-solvent ratio, which pushes the limit of localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE). The appropriate molecular structure and solvation ability of MeTHF regulate a saturated inner sheath, which features a reinforced coordination of Na+ to anions, enlarged Na+ -solvent distance, and weakened anion-diluent interaction. Such electrolyte configuration is found to be the key to build a sustainable interphase and a quasi-solid-solid sulfur redox process, making a dendrite-inhibited and shuttle-free Na-S battery possible. With this electrolyte, pouch cells with decent cycling performance under rather demanding conditions are demonstrated.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are attractive for automobile and grid applications due to their high theoretical energy density and the abundance of sulfur. Despite the significant progress in cathode development, lithium metal degradation and the polysulfide shuttle remain two critical challenges in the practical application of Li-S batteries. Development of advanced electrolytes has become a promising strategy to simultaneously suppress lithium dendrite formation and prevent polysulfide dissolution. Here, a new class of concentrated siloxane-based electrolytes, demonstrating significantly improved performance over the widely investigated ether-based electrolytes are reported in terms of stabilizing the sulfur cathode and Li metal anode as well as minimizing flammability. Through a combination of experimental and computational investigation, it is found that siloxane solvents can effectively regulate a hidden solvation-ion-exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes that results from the interactions between cations/anions (e.g., Li+, TFSI-, and S2-) and solvents. As a result, it could invoke a quasi-solid-solid lithiation and enable reversible Li plating/stripping and robust solid-electrolyte interphase chemistries. The solvation-ion-exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes is a key factor in understanding and designing electrolytes for other high-energy lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Electrolytes endowed with high oxidation/reduction interfacial stability, fast Li-ion desolvation process and decent ionic conductivity over wide temperature region are known critical for low temperature and fast-charging performance of energy-dense batteries, yet these characteristics are rarely satisfied simultaneously. Here, we report anchored weakly-solvated electrolytes (AWSEs), that are designed by extending the chain length of polyoxymethylene ether electrolyte solvent, can achieve the above merits at moderate salt concentrations. The -O-CH2-O- segment in solvent enables the weak four-membered ring Li+ coordination structure and the increased number of segments can anchor the solvent by Li+ without largely sacrificing the ionic dissociation ability. Therefore, the single salt/single solvent AWSEs enable solvent co-intercalation-free behavior towards graphite (Gr) anode and high oxidation stability towards high-nickel cathode (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2-NCM811), as well as the formation of inorganic rich electrode/electrolyte interphase on both of them due to the anion-rich solvation shells. The capacity retention of Gr||NCM811 Ah-class pouch cell can reach 70.85% for 1000 cycles at room-temperature and 75.86% for 400 cycles at -20 °C. This work points out a promising path toward the molecular design of electrolyte solvents for high-energy/power battery systems that are adaptive for extreme conditions.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries with high capacity, power and safety are urgently required for current and future technological demands. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer has a dominant impact on battery cyclability and the solvate is the key factor that determines the SEI layer. In this perspective, we first review the recent advances in understanding the influences of electrolyte composition on the solvation chemistry and SEI layer. The solvation structure of electrolytes seems to be the root cause of the stability of electrodes during cell cycling. We then discuss the strategy to manipulate the solvation chemistry by adjusting the compositions of the electrolytes, including the solvent, salt, concentration and additive. Finally, we concisely discuss the challenges in characterizing the structure of the solvates at the electrode|electrolyte interface. This review refreshes our current understanding of the key factors for stable electrode|electrolyte interfaces in the pursuit of high-performance battery systems.
Insights into the solvation chemistry in liquid electrolytes for lithium-based rechargeable batteries

Abstract:Lithium-based rechargeable batteries have dominated the energy storage field and attracted considerable research interest due to their excellent electrochemical performance. As indispensable and ubiquitous components, electrolytes play a pivotal role in not only transporting lithium ions, but also expanding the electrochemical stable potential window, suppressing the side reactions, and manipulating the redox mechanism, all of which are closely associated with the behavior of solvation chemistry in electrolytes. Thus, comprehensively understanding the solvation chemistry in electrolytes is of significant importance. Here we critically reviewed the development of electrolytes in various lithium-based rechargeable batteries including lithium-metal batteries (LMBs), nonaqueous lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), and aqueous lithium-ion batteries (ALIBs), and emphasized the effects of interactions between cations, anions, and solvents on solvation chemistry, and functions of solvation chemistry in different types of electrolytes (strong solvating electrolytes, moderate solvating electrolytes, and weak solvating electrolytes) on the electrochemical performance and redox mechanism in the abovementioned rechargeable batteries. Specifically, the significant effects of solvation chemistry on the stability of electrode-electrolyte interphases, suppression of lithium dendrites in LMBs, inhibition of the co-intercalation of solvents in LIBs, improvement of anodic stability at high cut-off voltages in LMBs, LIBs and ALIBs, regulation of redox pathways in LSBs and LOBs, and inhibition of hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions in LOBs are thoroughly summarized. Finally, the review concludes with a prospective outlook, where practical issues of electrolytes, advanced in situ/operando techniques to illustrate the mechanism of solvation chemistry, and advanced theoretical calculation and simulation techniques such as "material knowledge informed machine learning" and "artificial intelligence (AI) + big data" driven strategies for high-performance electrolytes have been proposed.

Abstract:One of the primary challenges to improving lithium-ion batteries lies in comprehending and controlling the intricate interphases. However, the complexity of interface reactions and the buried nature make it difficult to establish the relationship between the interphase characteristics and electrolyte chemistry. Herein, we employ diverse characterization techniques to investigate the progression of electrode-electrolyte interphases, bringing forward opportunities to improve the interphase properties by what we refer to as high-entropy solvation disordered electrolytes. Through formulating an electrolyte with a regular 1.0 M concentration that includes multiple commercial lithium salts, the solvation interaction with lithium ions alters fundamentally. The participation of several salts can result in a weaker solvation interaction, giving rise to an anion-rich and disordered solvation sheath despite the low salt concentration. This induces a conformal, inorganic-rich interphase that effectively passivates electrodes, preventing solvent co-intercalation. Remarkably, this electrolyte significantly enhances the performance of graphite-containing anodes paired with high-capacity cathodes, offering a promising avenue for tailoring interphase chemistries.
