Abstract:Abstract Rechargeable batteries are highly in demand to power various electronic devices and future smart electric grid energy storage. The electrode–electrolyte interphases play a crucial role in influencing the electrochemical performance of batteries, with the solvation chemistries of the electrolyte being particularly significant in regulating these interfacial reactions. However, the reaction mechanisms of electrolyte solvation and their specific functions in batteries are not yet fully understood. In this review, we embark on an exploration of the fundamental principles governing solvation and present a comprehensive overview of how solvation structures impact interfacial reactions at the electrode–electrolyte interface. We underscore the significance of interactions among cations, anions, and solvents in shaping electrolyte solvation structures. The primary strategies for controlling solvation structures are also discussed, including the optimization of salt concentrations, solvent interactions, and the introduction of functional cosolvents. Furthermore, we elucidate the oxidation/reduction reaction mechanisms of electrolyte components in different solvation structures and the new understanding of electrolyte additives in modulating interfacial chemistries in batteries. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of incorporating new characterization techniques and theoretical simulations to attain a deeper understanding of the intricate processes taking place within batteries. This review provides an in‐depth understanding in solvations and interphasial properties and new ideas for designing advanced functional electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:The efficacy of electrolytes significantly affects battery performance, leading to the development of several strategies to enhance them. Despite this, the understanding of solvation structure remains inadequate. It is imperative to understand the structure–property–performance relationship of electrolytes using diverse techniques. This review explores the recent advancements in electrolyte design strategies for high capacity, high-voltage, wide-temperature, fast-charging, and safe applications. To begin, the current state-of-the-art electrolyte design directions are comprehensively reviewed. Subsequently, advanced techniques and computational methods used to understand the solvation structure are discussed. Additionally, the importance of high-throughput screening and advanced computation of electrolytes with the help of machine learning is emphasized. Finally, future horizons for studying electrolytes are proposed, aimed at improving battery performance and promoting their application in various fields by enhancing the microscopic understanding of electrolytes.

Abstract:The building of safe and high energy-density lithium batteries is strongly dependent on the electrochemical performance of working electrolytes, in which ion–solvent interactions play a vital role. Herein, the ion–solvent chemistry is developed from mono-solvent to multi-solvent complexes to probe the solvation structure and the redox stability of practical electrolytes. The decrease in energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of solvents in lithium-ion solvation shells becomes less significant as the number of coordinated solvents increases, but both the HOMO and LUMO energies of the coordinated solvents remain lower than those of free solvents. A positive and approximately linear relationship was found between the decrease in the HOMO/LUMO energy and the average binding energy between Li+ and the coordinated solvents. A binary-solvent complex model further highlight the significant importance of the electrolyte solvation environment in regulating electrolyte stability, and it is essential to consider electrolyte stability from the perspective of ion–solvent complexes. These fresh insights into the energy chemistry of multi-solvent complexes provide critical references for electrolyte design and cell optimization.

Abstract:Building high-energy-density batteries is urgently demanded in contemporary society because of the continuous increase in global energy consumption and the quick upgrade of electronic devices, which promotes the use of high-capacity lithium metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes. Achieving a stable interface between electrolytes and highly reactive electrodes is a prerequisite to constructing a safe and powerful battery, in which electrolyte regulation plays a decisive role and largely determines the long-term and rate performances. The bulk and interfacial properties of electrolytes are directly determined by the fundamental interactions and the as-derived microstructures in electrolytes. Different from experimental trial-and-error approaches, the rational bottom-up design of electrolytes based on a comprehensive and deep understanding of the fundamental interactions between electrolyte compositions and the structure–function relationship is highly expected to accelerate breaking through the bottleneck in current technology and realizing next-generation Li batteries.In this Account, we afford an overview of our recent attempts toward rational electrolyte design for safe Li batteries based on a comprehensive understanding of the cation–solvent, cation–anion, and anion–solvent interactions in electrolytes. The formation of cation–solvent complexes decreases the reductive stability but increases the oxidative stability of solvent molecules according to frontier molecular orbital theory, whereas the introduction of anions into the Li+ solvation shell has the opposite function in regulating solvent stability compared with cations. The competitive coordination of anions and solvent molecules with cations directly determines the salt solubility in electrolytes and the formation of ion pairs and aggregates, which widely exist in high-concentration electrolytes and stabilize Li metal anodes. An easy and effective route to dissolve lithium nitrate in ester electrolytes is accordingly proposed. Although anions are hardly solvated in routine solvents, solvents with a high acceptor number or an exposed positive charge site are highly expected to enhance the anion–solvent interaction. The solvation of anions will have a strong influence on electrolytes, including regulating the electrolyte solvation structure and stability, increasing the cation transference number, and promoting salt dissociation. The emerging Li bond theory and big-data approaches, combined with first-principles calculations and experimental characterizations, are also expected to promote rational electrolyte design with much reduced time and expense.Collectively, with a comprehensive and deep understanding of the fundamental interactions in electrolytes and the structure–function relationship, bottom-up engineering of Li battery electrolytes is expected to be achieved, accelerating the applications of safe high-energy-density Li batteries. The general principles demonstrated in Li batteries are also supposed to be applicable to other battery systems and even universal electrochemistry in solutions, including fuel cells and various electrocatalyses.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Functional electrolyte is the key to stabilize the highly reductive lithium (Li) metal anode and the high-voltage cathode for long-life, high-energy-density rechargeable Li metal batteries (LMBs). However, fundamental mechanisms on the interactions between reactive electrodes and electrolytes are still not well understood. Recently localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) are emerging as a promising electrolyte design strategy for LMBs. Here, we use LHCEs as an ideal platform to investigate the fundamental correlation between the reactive characteristics of the inner solvation sheath on electrode surfaces due to their unique solvation structures. The effects of a series of LHCEs with model electrolyte solvents (carbonate, sulfone, phosphate, and ether) on the stability of high-voltage LMBs are systematically studied. The stabilities of electrodes in different LHCEs indicate the intrinsic synergistic effects between the salt and the solvent when they coexist on electrode surfaces. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal an intriguing general rule that the strong interactions between the salt and the solvent in the inner solvation sheath promote their intermolecular proton/charge transfer reactions, which dictates the properties of the electrode/electrolyte interphases and thus the battery performances.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer that forms on an electrode’s surface has been believed to be pivotal for stabilizing the electrode’s performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, more and more researchers currently are realizing that the metal-ion solvation structure (e.g., Li+) in electrolytes and the derived interfacial model (i.e., the desolvation process) can affect the electrode’s performance significantly. Thus, herein we summarize recent research focused on how to discover the importance of an electrolyte’s solvation structure, develop a quantitative model to describe the solvation structure, construct an interfacial model to understand the electrode’s performance, and apply these theories to the design of electrolytes. We provide a timely review on the scientific relationship between the molecular interactions of metal ions, anions, and solvents in the interfacial model and the electrode’s performance, of which the viewpoint differs from the SEI interpretations before. These discoveries may herald a new, post-SEI era due to their significance for guiding the design of LIBs and their performance improvement, as well as developing other metal-ion batteries and beyond.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are attractive for automobile and grid applications due to their high theoretical energy density and the abundance of sulfur. Despite the significant progress in cathode development, lithium metal degradation and the polysulfide shuttle remain two critical challenges in the practical application of Li-S batteries. Development of advanced electrolytes has become a promising strategy to simultaneously suppress lithium dendrite formation and prevent polysulfide dissolution. Here, a new class of concentrated siloxane-based electrolytes, demonstrating significantly improved performance over the widely investigated ether-based electrolytes are reported in terms of stabilizing the sulfur cathode and Li metal anode as well as minimizing flammability. Through a combination of experimental and computational investigation, it is found that siloxane solvents can effectively regulate a hidden solvation-ion-exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes that results from the interactions between cations/anions (e.g., Li+, TFSI-, and S2-) and solvents. As a result, it could invoke a quasi-solid-solid lithiation and enable reversible Li plating/stripping and robust solid-electrolyte interphase chemistries. The solvation-ion-exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes is a key factor in understanding and designing electrolytes for other high-energy lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Electrolytes that can ensure the movement of ions and regulate interfacial chemistries for fast mass and charge transfer are essential in many types of electrochemical energy storage devices. However, in the emerging energy-dense lithium-based batteries, the uncontrollable side-reactions and consumption of the electrolyte result in poor electrochemical performances and severe safety concerns. In this case, fluorination has been demonstrated to be one of the most effective strategies to overcome the above-mentioned issues without significantly contributing to engineering and technical difficulties. Herein, we present a comprehensive overview of the fluorinated solvents that can be employed in lithium-based batteries. Firstly, the basic parameters that dictate the properties of solvents/electrolytes are elaborated, including physical properties, solvation structure, interface chemistry, and safety. Specifically, we focus on the advances and scientific challenges associated with different solvents and the enhancement in their performance after fluorination. Secondly, we discuss the synthetic methods for new fluorinated solvents and their reaction mechanisms in depth. Thirdly, the progress, structure–performance relationship, and applications of fluorinated solvents are reviewed. Subsequently, we provide suggestions on the solvent selection for different battery chemistries. Finally, the existing challenges and further efforts on fluorinated solvents are summarized. The combination of advanced synthesis and characterization approaches with the assistance of machine learning will enable the design of new fluorinated solvents for advanced lithium-based batteries.

Abstract:The electrolyte is a principal component of a lithium battery that impacts almost every facet of the battery's performance. Solvation of lithium ions in electrolyte solution is key to understanding the electrolyte, but our understanding of solvation lags behind its significance. Particularly, estimating solvation free energy has been largely limited to computational simulations. Despite their versatility, simulations can be computationally expensive, and experimental methods to complement simulations are desired. We have recently introduced a potentiometric technique to probe the relative solvation free energy of lithium ions in battery electrolytes. We devised an electrochemical cell composed of two half-cells, with symmetric electrodes but asymmetric electrolytes. Whereas the open circuit potential of a conventional lithium-ion battery measures the free energy differences of lithium ions in the two electrodes, our experimental setup measures the energy differences of the lithium ions in two different electrolytes. By measuring the cell potential with a reference electrolyte, we can quantitatively characterize lithium ion solvation energy of an electrolyte of interest. The effects of concentration, anion and solvent on solvation energy are explored and verified with simulations. Particularly, we establish a correlation between cell potential (E cell ) and cyclability of high-performance electrolytes for lithium metal anodes. We find that solvents with more negative cell potentials and positive solvation energies—those weakly binding to Li + —lead to improved cycling stability. Weaker solvents are conjectured to have more anion-rich solvation structures that lead to anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphases, a hypothesis supported by cryogenic electron microscopy. It reveals that weaker solvation is correlated to an inorganic anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase that stabilizes cycling.
Solvent versus Anion Chemistry: Unveiling the Structure-Dependent Reactivity in Tailoring Electrochemical Interphases for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Electrolytes are critical for the reversibility of various electrochemical energy storage systems. The recent development of electrolytes for high-voltage Li-metal batteries has been counting on the salt anion chemistry for building stable interphases. Herein, we investigate the effect of the solvent structure on the interfacial reactivity and discover profound solvent chemistry of designed monofluoro-ether in anion-enriched solvation structures, which enables enhanced stabilization of both high-voltage cathodes and Li-metal anodes. Systematic comparison of different molecular derivatives provides an atomic-scale understanding of the unique solvent structure-dependent reactivity. The interaction between Li+ and the monofluoro (-CH2F) group significantly influences the electrolyte solvation structure and promotes the monofluoro-ether-based interfacial reactions over the anion chemistry. With in-depth analyses of the compositions, charge transfer, and ion transport at interfaces, we demonstrated the essential role of the monofluoro-ether solvent chemistry in tailoring highly protective and conductive interphases (with enriched LiF at full depths) on both electrodes, as opposed to the anion-derived ones in typical concentrated electrolytes. As a result, the solvent-dominant electrolyte chemistry enables a high Li Coulombic efficiency (∼99.4%) and stable Li anode cycling at a high rate (10 mA cm-2), together with greatly improved cycling stability of 4.7 V-class nickel-rich cathodes. This work illustrates the underlying mechanism of the competitive solvent and anion interfacial reaction schemes in Li-metal batteries and offers fundamental insights into the rational design of electrolytes for future high-energy batteries.

Abstract:A new solvation structure‐related model, focusing on the coordination chemistry principle, is presented for the quantitative design of electrolytes in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). The formulated electrolyte exhibits high compatibility with the novel hybrid hard carbon‐silicon/carbon‐based (HC‐Si/C) anode and demonstrates a reliable high‐voltage operation (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode), enabling the configured HC‐Si/C. Electrolyte is critical for transporting lithium‐ion (Li+) in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, there is no universally applicable principle for designing an optimal electrolyte. In most cases, the design process relies on empirical experiences and is often treated as highly confidential proprietary information. Herein, a solvation structure‐related model for the quantitative design of electrolytes is introduced, focusing on the principles of coordination chemistry. As a paradigmatic example, a high‐voltage electrolyte (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode) aimed at achieving a high energy density and fast charging LIB, which is specifically composed of an emerging, well‐constructed hybrid hard carbon‐silicon/carbon‐based anode, and lithium cobalt oxide cathode, is developed. Not only the functions of each electrolyte component at the molecular scale within the Li+ solvation structure are analyzed but also an interfacial model is introduced to elucidate their relationship with the battery performance. This study represents a pioneering effort in developing a methodology to guide electrolyte design, in which the mutual effects of the Li+ de‐solvation process and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the electrode surface are explored concurrently to understand the root cause of superior performance. This innovative approach establishes a new paradigm in electrolyte design, providing valuable insights at the molecular level.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage systems due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the high reactivity of the Li anodes leads to the decomposition of the electrolytes, presenting a huge impediment to the practical application of LMBs. The routine trial-and-error methods are inefficient in designing highly stable solvent molecules for the Li metal anode. Herein, a data-driven approach is proposed to probe the origin of the reductive stability of solvents and accelerate the molecular design for advanced electrolytes. A large database of potential solvent molecules is first constructed using a graph theory-based algorithm and then comprehensively investigated by both first-principles calculations and machine learning (ML) methods. The reductive stability of 99% of the electrolytes decreases under the dominance of ion-solvent complexes, according to the analysis of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The LUMO energy level is related to the binding energy, bond length, and orbital ratio factors. An interpretable ML method based on Shapley additive explanations identifies the dipole moment and molecular radius as the most critical descriptors affecting the reductive stability of coordinated solvents. This work not only affords fruitful data-driven insight into the ion-solvent chemistry but also unveils the critical molecular descriptors in regulating the solvent's reductive stability, which accelerates the rational design of advanced electrolyte molecules for next-generation Li batteries.

Abstract:Advanced electrolyte design is essential for building highenergy-density lithium (Li) batteries and introducing anions into the Li + solvation sheaths has been widely demonstrated as a promising strategy. However, a fundamental understanding of the critical role of anions in such electrolytes is very lacking. Herein, the anionic chemistry in regulating the electrolyte structure and stability is probed by combining computational and experimental approaches. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, the solvents and anions in Li + solvation sheaths exhibit enhanced and decreased reductive stability compared with free counterparts, respectively, which agrees with both calculated and experimental results of reduction potentials. Accordingly, new strategies are proposed to build stable electrolytes based on the established anionic chemistry. This work unveils the mysterious anionic chemistry in regulating the structure-function relationship of electrolytes and contributes to a rational design of advanced electrolytes for practical Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries possess overwhelming energy density of 2654 Wh kg(-1), and are considered as the next-generation battery technology for energy demanding applications. Flooded electrolytes are ubiquitously employed in cells to ensure sufficient redox kinetics and preclude the interference of the electrolyte depletion due to side reactions with the lithium metal anode. This strategy is capable of enabling long-lasting, high-capacity and excellent-rate battery performances, but it mask the requirements of practical Li-S batteries, where high-sulfur-loading/content and lean electrolyte are prerequisite to realize the energy-dense Li-S batteries. Sparingly and highly solvating electrolytes have emerged as effective yet simple approaches to decrease the electrolyte/sulfur ratio through altering sulfur species and exerting new reaction pathways. Sparingly solvating electrolytes are characterized by few free solvents to solvate lithium polysulfides, rendering a quasi-solid sulfur conversion and decoupling the reaction mechanisms from electrolyte quantity used in cells; while highly solvating electrolytes adopt highdonicity or high-permittivity solvents and take their advantages of strong solvation ability toward polysulfide intermediates, thereby favoring the polysulfide formation and stabilizing unique radicals, which subsequently accelerate redox kinetics. Both solvation chemistry approaches have their respective features to allow the operation of cells under electrolyte-starved conditions. Abstract:Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted wide attention for future electric vehicles and next‐generation energy storage because of their exceptionally high specific energy density. Recently, the development of electrode materials for LMBs has been extensively discussed and reviewed in the literature, but there have been very few reports that systematically review the status and progress of electrolytes for such applications. Actually, the viability of practical LMBs critically depends on the development of suitable liquid electrolytes due to the high reactivity of Li metals toward most solvents. This paper provides a systematic summary of the background and recent advances of the electrolytes for LMBs with an emphasis on the thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities at the interfaces. In addition, the emerging advanced characterization techniques for understanding the electrolyte–electrode interfaces are surveyed. Finally, a perspective for future directions is provided.

Abstract:Lithium metal is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its intrinsic superiority including the lowest electrode potential (−3.04 V vs. SHE) and impressive theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). Even though the study of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) can be traced back to the 1970s, the practical promotion has been hindered by some substantial obstacles, such as the growth of dendrite and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE). During the past decade, extensive investigative approaches have been devoted to stabilizing the deposition of lithium metal as well as inhibiting the undesirable parasitic reactions. Electrolytes play a crucial role in the deposition of lithium, and that explains the reason why a great deal of progress has been attained in this field. This review summarizes the representative work in recent years, including the optimization of conventional electrolyte components, as well as the novel materials in a solvent, Li salt, and additives. Moreover, high-concentration electrolytes and localized high-concentration electrolytes are summarized representing two fruitful fields, based on the emerging theories of lithium-ion coordination and solvation sheath layer. Finally, some prospects are proposed to lead us closer to the large-scale application of LMBs.

Advances and Atomistic Insights of Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries and Beyond

Abstract:Electrolytes and the associated electrode-electrolyte interfaces are crucial for the development and application of high-capacity energy storage systems.Specifically,a variety of electrolyte properties,ranging from mechanical(compressibility,vis-cosity),thermal(heat conductivity and capacity),to chemical(solubility,activity,reactivity),transport,and electrochemical(interfa-cial and interphasial),are correlated to the performance of the resultant full energy storage device.In order to facilitate the operation of novel electrode materials,extensive experimental efforts have been devoted to improving these electrolyte properties by tuning the physical design and/or chemical composition.Meanwhile,the recent development of theoretical modeling methods is providing atomistic understandings of the electrolyte's role in regulating the ion transport and enabling a functional interface.In this regard,we stand at a new frontier to take advantage of the revealed mechanistic insights into rationally design novel electrolyte systems.In this review,we first summarize the composition,solvation structure,and transport properties of conventional electrolytes as well as the formation mechanism of the electrode-electrolyte interphase.Moreover,some of the promising energy storage systems are briefly introduced.Further,approaches to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interphase using novel electrolyte design,including electrolyte additives,high-concentration electrolytes,and solid-state electrolytes,are discussed.Some recent advances in the atom-istic modeling of these aspects are particularly focused to provide a fundamental understanding of electrolytes and a comprehensive guide for future electrolyte design.Finally,we highlight the prospects of theoretical screening of novel electrolytes.

Abstract:AbstractThe performance of Li‐ion batteries (LIBs) is highly dependent on their interfacial chemistry, which is regulated by electrolytes. Conventional electrolyte typically contains polar solvents to dissociate Li salts. Herein we report a weakly solvating electrolyte (WSE) that consists of a pure non‐polar solvent, which leads to a peculiar solvation structure where ion pairs and aggregates prevail under a low salt concentration of 1.0 M. Importantly, WSE forms unique anion‐derived interphases on graphite electrodes that exhibit fast‐charging and long‐term cycling characteristics. First‐principles calculations unravel a general principle that the competitive coordination between anions and solvents to Li ions is the origin of different interfacial chemistries. By bridging the gap between solution thermodynamics and interfacial chemistry in batteries, this work opens a brand‐new way towards precise electrolyte engineering for energy storage devices with desired properties.
