Abstract:Pride and prejudice continues to be popular today not only because of its memorable characters, but also because of the perfect use of rhetoric-irony. Irony plays the decisive role in characterization and plot development. We should pay attention on the irony words in dialogue, scene irony and dramatic irony. Irony can be achieved joking, teasing and the effect of sarcasm, makes the work lively and humorous and full of artistic appeal. Irony in Pride and Prejudice shaped fresh characters. From the point of view of the plot development, the whole story seems to be made of many ironies which make the work so fun. Pride and Prejudice is a work worth reading a hundred times for readers.

Abstract:Pride and Prejudice, as Jane Austen’s most representative novel, has high literary value and research significance. The most notable feature of this novel is irony, which is employed to depict character images and highlight psychological activities and relationships among the characters. Irony is closely related to speech act theory, this article in the framework of speech act theory analyzes irony form the macro and micro perspective, thus proves the feasibility of application of theory of general linguistics to the analysis of fiction texts.

Abstract:Irony in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event in which what on the surface appears to be the case or to be expected differs radically from what is actually the case. In other words, the basic feature of irony is a contrast between reality and appearance. It can be categorized into different types, including verbal irony, dramatic irony and situational irony. These types of ironies are often used for emphasis in the assertion of a truth. Jane Austen uses all these ironies in her novels to show the comic vision of her life. She has used it as a neutral discoverer and explorer of incongruities.

Abstract:Pride and Prejudice, a masterpiece by the famous British female writer Jane Austen in the 19th century, is also Jane Austen’s earliest novel, which took a year to complete. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen successfully created a new era of women-Elizabeth, starting with the arrogance and prejudice of the hero Darcy and the heroine Elizabeth. After several twists and turns, the hero and heroine finally became a beautiful couple. The Jane Austen was different from the British popular literary language creation model at the time. She was bold and innovative, using female delicate thinking, exaggerated irony, simple, lively and vivid yet charming literary language, and created a book about A masterpiece of life and marriage thinking. Therefore, this article will discuss Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of literary language, and at the same time help readers better understand the connotation and internal meaning.

On undertranslation of irony in Pride and Prejudice

Abstract:Bearing the effects of banter,ridicule,and sarcasm,irony makes literary works more vivid and appealing.As irony shapes those lively characters in Pride and Prejudice and fills the work with hu-mor and wit,it should be fully reproduced in a successful translation.However,undertranslation of irony is discovered in all the three selected Chinese versions to be discussed in the paper.Accordingly,from the linguistic perspective,this paper analyzes its causes,provides suggestions,and holds that an abundant knowledge of the source culture as well as a good mastery of the target language is required to avoid undertranslation of irony and to achieve reader response equivalence between the two cultures.

Abstract:Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel from Jane Austen, a prominent female British writer, which has attracted considerable attention from the perspective of language, content, feminism, and marriage view but without the plot organization. Different from the previous study, this paper aims at the plot organization of the novel to see its structure and the deep meaning. This paper is devoted to analyzing the novel from the surface and deep structure, in which the structuralist approach is employed. The surface and deep structure theory is the main clue; besides, the structuralist narratological methods are applied to analyze the cases in the novel and explore the surface structure and deep structure respectively. The concepts of surface and deep structure and the structuralist narratological methods were applied to analyze Pride and Prejudice to see how the plots act to serve for the theme. The paper shows that the achievement of a novel is closely related to its complement of the structure. The clear hierarchies can effectively elaborate the story and the theme. To divide the plot into several parts can easily control and handle the development and interaction of the plots. The relative and oppositional relations of the different plots contribute to the demonstration of the theme and the comprehension of the readers.
Translating irony. Translation strategies and techniques used by Polish translators of Pride and Prejudice

Abstract:This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of two Polish translations of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The authors of the translations are Anna Przedpełska-Trzeciakowska and Magdalena Gawlik-Małkowska. Attention is given to rendering irony, which is the novel’s characteristic feature. The analysed excerpts illustrate the main translation strategies and techniques used in the Polish translations. A comparative analysis shows that techniques applicable to rendering humour and culture-bound elements can be used to translate irony as well. The Polish translations convey irony, but there are differences caused by the translators’ interpretations and by their choice of s trategies and techniques. Przedpełska-Trzeciakowska often uses the strategy of foreignization, but she tries to guide the reader so that they can perceive the implicature. Gawlik-Małkowska’s translation is more literal and more modern, and its irony is more covert.

Abstract:Jane Austen is acknowledged for the application of realism and satire in her novels. This paper focuses on the analysis of realism and satire in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice; however, her entire oeuvre spotlights the features (of satire and realism) alongside robust feminism: typical of her literary taste and temperament, not necessarily of the Romantic Age which she lived in. Rigorous analysis and realistic observation reveals that the employment of realism and satire in Pride and Prejudice, are quite obvious, in all sorts of aspects including narrative, settings, themes and characters. Analysis of the novel under study leads to the observation that satire and realism go hand in hand in the said novel—intermittently—and thoughtfully. Conclusively, it is observed that Jane Austen’s literary life had a tremendous influence on how to subsume realism (primarily through matrimonies) of age and satire on a romantic society (whereby ideals collapse headlong), in Pride and Prejudice.

Abstract:Jane Austen's most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice (1813), illuminates and is illuminated by psychoanalytic aesthetics. When Austen dramatizes unconscious oedipal/sibling rivalries, irony acts as a type of aesthetic ambiguity (E. Kris 1952). A psychoanalytic perspective shows that Austen uses a grammar of negatives (negation, denial, minimization) to achieve the dual meanings of irony, engaging the reader's unconscious instinctual satisfactions, while at the same time protecting the reader from unpleasant affects. Austen's plot, which portrays regressions driven by sibling jealousy, reveals that a new tolerance of remorse and depression in her heroine and hero leads to psychic growth.

Abstract:Jane Austen's novels are typical of the ideological ambiguity that characterizes the realist novel.Pride and Prejudice's well-balanced portrayal of the landed gentry,the middle class and the aristocracy creates an ideologically ambiguous impression that enables the author to convey certain progressive ideas that otherwise would have little chance of finding expression without appearing to challenge the status quo.A similar impression runs through Emma,with its open interpretation of the heroine's role and the conflicting ideological messages sent by the two marriages.Such ambiguity does not so much represent Austen's own ideological position as reflects what the form and commercial nature require of the modern realist novel.
