Abstract:It is well known that the presence of horseshoes leads to positive entropy. If our goal is to construct a continuous map with infinite entropy, we can consider an infinite sequence of horseshoes, ensuring an unbounded number of legs. Estimating the exact values of both the metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension for a homeomorphism is a challenging task. We need to establish a precise relationship between the sizes of the horseshoes and the number of appropriated legs to control both quantities. Let $N$ be an $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold, where $n \geq 2$, and $\alpha \in [0, n]$. In this paper, we construct a homeomorphism $\phi: N \rightarrow N$ with mean Hausdorff dimension equal to $\alpha$. Furthermore, we prove that the set of homeomorphisms on $N$ with both lower and upper mean Hausdorff dimensions equal to $\alpha$ is dense in $\text{Hom}(N)$. Additionally, we establish that the set of homeomorphisms with upper mean Hausdorff dimension equal to $n$ contains a residual subset of $\text{Hom}(N).$

Abstract:A class of planar diffeomorphims is formulated, with infinitely many coexisting Smale horseshoes, where the Lebesgue measure of the parameters with such strange dynamics is infinite. On each horseshoe, there exists a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set, on which the map is topologically conjugate to the two-sided full-shift on two symbols. Moreover, the topological entropy is infinite in certain parameter regions.

Abstract:A local homeomorphism between open subsets of a locally compact Hausdorff space induces dynamical systems with a wide range of applications, including in C*-algebras. In this paper, we introduce the concepts of nonwandering and wandering sets for such systems and show that, under mild conditions, the metric entropy is concentrated in the nonwandering set. More generally, we demonstrate that the entropy of the system is the maximum of the entropies of the systems restricted to the nonwandering set and the closure of the wandering set. We illustrate these results with several examples, including applications to subshifts over countable alphabets.

Abstract:It is an open problem whether a homeomorphism on a compact metric space satisfying that each proper pair is either positively or negatively Li--Yorke, called completely Li--Yorke chaotic, can have positive entropy. In the present paper, an affirmative answer to this question is given. In fact, for each homeomorphism $T$ with positive entropy such that each proper pair is not two-sided asymptotic, a completely Li--Yorke chaotic homeomorphism with positive entropy associated with the given homeomorphism can be constructed.

Abstract:We consider a closed convex set $C$ in a separable, infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and endow the set $\mathcal{N}(C)$ of nonexpansive self-mappings on $C$ with the topology of pointwise convergence. We introduce the notion of a somewhat bounded set and establish a strong connection between this property and the existence of fixed points for the generic $f\in\mathcal{N}(C)$, in the sense of Baire categories. Namely, if $C$ is somewhat bounded, the generic nonexpansive mapping on $C$ admits a fixed point, whereas if $C$ is not somewhat bounded, the generic nonexpansive mapping on $C$ does not have any fixed points. This results in a topological 0-1 law: the set of all $f\in\mathcal{N}(C)$ with a fixed point is either meager or residual. We further prove that, generically, there are no fixed points in the interior of $C$ and, under additional geometric assumptions, we show the uniqueness of such fixed points for the generic $f\in\mathcal{N}(C)$ and the convergence of the iterates of $f$ to its fixed point.

Abstract:Given $X$ a compact metric space and $T: X \to X$ a continuous map, the induced hyperspace map $T_\mathcal{K}$ acts on the hyperspace $\mathcal{K}(X)$ of closed and nonempty subsets of $X$, and on the continuum hyperspace $\mathcal{C}(X) \subset \mathcal{K}(X)$ of connected sets. This work studies the mean dimension explosion phenomenon: when the base system $T$ has zero topological entropy, but the mean dimension of the induced map $T_\mathcal{K}$ is infinite. In particular, this phenomenon is attained for Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. Furthermore, for a circle homeomorphism $H$, the mean dimension explosion does not occur if, and only if, $H$ is conjugated to a rotation. Finally, if the topological entropy of $T$ is positive, then the metric mean dimension of $T_\mathcal{K}$ is infinite.

Abstract:A topological dynamical system is said to have a semi-horseshoe if there exists a subsystem of its iterates which is topologically semi-conjugate to the full shift. It is shown that several classes of dynamical systems, including partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and automorphisms of compact metric abelian groups with positive topological entropy, have semi-horseshoes.

Abstract:A homeomorphism on a metric space (X, d) is completely scrambled if for each x not equal y is an element of X, lim sup(n--> + infinity) d (f(n)(x), f(n)(y)) > 0 and lim inf(n-->+infinity) d(f(n)(x), f(n)(y)) 0. We study the basic properties of completely scrambled homeomorphisms on compacta and show that there are 'many' compacta admitting completely scrambled homeomorphisms, which include some countable compacta (we give a characterization), the Canter set and continua of arbitrary dimension.
Finite Measures of Maximal Entropy for an Open Set of Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We consider partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f$ with a one-dimensional central direction such that the unstable entropy exceeds the stable entropy. Our main result proves that such maps have a finite number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy. Moreover, any $C^{1+}$ diffeomorphism near $f$ in the $C^1$ topology possesses at most the same number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy. Our contribution is in extending the findings in [4] to arbitrary dimensions. We believe our technique, essentially distinct from the one in that paper, is robust and may find applications in further contexts.

Abstract:We study homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces whose restriction to the nonwandering set has the pseudo-orbit tracing property. We prove that if there are positively expansive measures, then the topological entropy is positive. Some short applications of this result are included.

Abstract:We propose a notion of random horseshoe for one-dimensional random dynamical systems. We prove the abundance of random horseshoes for a class of circle endomorphisms subject to additive noise, large enough to make the Lyapunov exponent positive. In particular, we provide conditions which guarantee that given any pair of disjoint intervals, for almost every noise realization, there exists a positive density sequence of return times to these intervals such that the induced dynamics are the full shift on two symbols.

Abstract:Let M be a hereditarily decomposable chainable continuum and F be a homeomorphism of M. We show that the periods of the periodic orbits of F are powers of 2 and for each x is an element of R(F), either omega(x, F) is a periodic orbit of F or (omega(x, F), F) is semi-conjugate to the adding machine. Partially answering a problem of Marcy Barge we prove that homeomorphisms of Suslinean chainable continua have zero topological entropy. By the same idea homeomorphisms of Suslinean circle-like continua also have zero topological entropy.

Abstract:We consider a complete, unbounded, hyperbolic metric space $X$ and a concave, nonzero and nondecreasing function $\omega:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty)$ with $\omega(0)=0$ and study the space $\mathcal{C}_\omega(X)$ of uniformly continous self-mappings on $X$ whose modulus of continuity is bounded above by $\omega$. We endow $\mathcal{C}_\omega(X)$ with the topology of uniform convergence on bounded sets and prove that the modulus of continuity of the generic mapping in $\mathcal{C}_\omega(X)$, in the sense of Baire categories, is precisely $\omega$. Some related results in spaces of bounded mappings and in the topology of pointwise convergence are also discussed. This note can be seen as a completion of various results due to F. Strobin, S. Reich, A. Zaslavski, C. Bargetz and D. Thimm.

On the Hausdorff dimension of geodesics that diverge on average

Abstract:In this article we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of geodesic directions that are recurrent and diverge on average coincides with the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow for any complete, pinched negatively curved Riemannian manifold. We derive an interesting consequence from this result, we prove that the entropy of a {\sigma}-finite, ergodic and conservative infinite invariant measure is bounded from above by the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow.

Abstract:We give a generalization to convex co-compact semigroups of a beautiful theorem of Patterson-Sullivan, telling that the critical exponent (that is the exponential growth rate) equals the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set (that is the smallest closed non-empty invariant subset), for a isometries discrete group of a proper hyperbolic space with compact boundary. To do that, we introduce a notion of entropy, which generalize the notion of critical exponent of discrete groups, and we show that it is equal to the upper bound of critical exponents of Schottky sub-semigroups (which are semigroups having the simplest dynamic). We obtains several others corollaries, such that the lower semi-continuity of the entropy, the fact that the critical exponent of a separate semigroup, that is defined as an upper limit, is in fact a true limit, and we obtain the existence of "big" Schottky sub-semigroups in discrete groups of isometries.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a one-way horseshoe for topological dynamical systems and show that, quite surprisingly, it plays the same role in the theory of polynomial entropy as the notion of a horseshoe plays in the theory of topological entropy. Indeed, we show that the existence of a one-way horseshoe gives a lower bound for polynomial entropy and for maps of the interval also conversely, polynomial entropy is given by one-way horseshoes of iterates of the map, analogously to Misiurewicz's theorem on topological entropy and standard ‘two-way’ horseshoes. As a consequence we get a rigidity result that if the polynomial entropy of an interval map is finite, then it is an integer. Furthermore, for interval maps of Sharkovskii type 1 the polynomial entropy can also be computed by what we call chains of essential intervals. We further describe the possible values of polynomial entropy of maps of all Sharkovskii types. We then apply our tools to the classic logistic family, showing that the polynomial entropy increases weakly monotonically with the parameter, making discrete jumps up at bifurcation points along the period-doubling cascade. On the other hand, we show that in the class of all continua the polynomial entropy of continuous maps is very flexible. For every value α ∈ [ 0 , ∞ ] there is a homeomorphism on a continuum with polynomial entropy α. We discuss also possible values of the polynomial entropy of continuous maps on dendrites.

Abstract:In this paper we study interval maps $f$ with zero topological entropy that are crooked; i.e. whose inverse limit with $f$ as the single bonding map is the pseudo-arc. We show that there are uncountably many pairwise non-conjugate zero entropy crooked interval maps with different sets of fixed points. We also show that there are uncountably many zero entropy crooked maps that are pairwise non-conjugate and have exactly two fixed points. Furthermore, we provide a characterization of crooked interval maps that are under or above the identity diagonal.
