Abstract:We study the problem of the irreducibility of the Hessian variety $\mathcal{H}_f$ associated with a smooth cubic hypersurface $V(f)\subset \mathbb{P}^n$. We prove that when $n\leq5$, $\mathcal{H}_f$ is normal and irreducible if and only if $f$ is not of Thom-Sebastiani type, i.e., roughly, one can not separate its variables. This also generalizes a result of Beniamino Segre dealing with the case of cubic surfaces. The geometric approach is based on the study of the singular locus of the Hessian variety and on infinitesimal computations arising from a particular description of these singularities.

Abstract:In this paper we classify all singular irreducible symplectic surfaces, i.e., compact, connected complex surfaces with canonical singularities that have a holomorphic symplectic form $\sigma$ on the smooth locus, and for which every finite quasi-étale covering has the algebra of reflexive forms spanned by the reflexive pull-back of $\sigma$. We moreover prove that the Hilbert scheme of two points on such a surface $X$ is an irreducible symplectic variety, at least in the case where the smooth locus of $X$ is simply connected.

Entire hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature in Minkowski space

Abstract:We show that every regular domain $\mathcal D$ in Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{n,1}$ which is not a wedge admits an entire hypersurface whose domain of dependence is $\mathcal D$ and whose scalar curvature is a prescribed constant (or function, under suitable hypotheses) in $(-\infty,0)$. Under rather general assumptions, these hypersurfaces are unique and provide foliations of $\mathcal D$. As an application, we show that every maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy compact flat spacetime admits a foliation by hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature, generalizing to any dimension previous results of Barbot-Béguin-Zeghib (for $n=2$) and Smith (for $n=3$).

In order to prove these results, we discuss the transversal discriminant of such singularities and how it relates to other algebraic and topological invariants.

Abstract:We prove that the irreducible desingularization of a singularity given by the Grauert blow down of a negative holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold is unique up to isomorphism, and as an application, we show that two negative line bundles over compact complex manifolds are isomorphic if and only if their Grauert blow downs have isomorphic germs near the singularities. We also show that there is a unique way to modify a submanifold of a complex manifold to a hypersurface, namely, the blow up of the ambient manifold along the submanifold.

Abstract:Let $\xi$ be a real analytic vector field with an elementary isolated singularity at $0\in \mathbb{R}^3$ and eigenvalues $\pm bi,c$ with $b,c\in \mathbb{R}$ and $b\neq 0$. We prove that all cycles of $\xi$ in a sufficiently small neighborhood of $0$, if they exist, are contained in a finite number of subanalytic invariant surfaces entirely composed by a continuum of cycles. In particular, we solve Dulac's problem, i.e. finiteness of limit cycles, for such vector fields.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and $L\in \mathrm{Pic}(X)$. We prove that if $L$ is $(2k-1)$-spanned, then the set $\tilde{V}_k(L)$ of all nodal and irreducible $D\in |L|$ with exactly $k$ nodes is irreducible. The set $\tilde{V}_k(L)$ is an open subset of a Severi variety of $|L|$, the full Severi variety parametrizing all integral $D\in |L|$ with geometric genus $g(L)-k$.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if two germs of plane curves ( C , 0) and $$(C',0)$$ ( C ′ , 0 ) with at least one singular branch are equivalent by a (real) smooth diffeomorphism, then C is complex isomorphic to $$C'$$ C ′ or to $$\overline{C'}$$ C ′ ̄ . A similar result was shown by Ephraim for irreducible hypersurfaces before, but his proof is not constructive. Indeed, we show that the complex isomorphism is given by the Taylor series of the diffeomorphism. We also prove an analogous result for the case of non-irreducible hypersurfaces containing an irreducible component that is non-factorable. Moreover, we provide a general overview of the different classifications of plane curve singularities.

Singular Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space induced by curves in the Grassmannian

Abstract:Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integral. In this case, $H$ is in some sense simply a complex cone over an algebraic curve in ${\mathbb P}^1$. Similarly if $H$ has a degenerate singularity, then $H$ is also algebraic. If the dimension of the singular set is $2n-2$ and is nondegenerate, we show by construction that the hypersurface need not be algebraic nor semialgebraic. We construct a Levi-flat real-analytic subvariety in ${\mathbb P}^2$ of real codimension 1 with compact leaves that is not contained in any proper real-algebraic subvariety of ${\mathbb P}^2$. Therefore a straightforward analogue of Chow's theorem for Levi-flat hypersurfaces does not hold.

On Zariski multiplicity conjecture for quasihomogeneous surfaces with non-isolated singularities

Abstract:We consider a finitely determined map germ $f$ from $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ to $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$. In this case, the double point curve $D(f)$ plays a fundamental role in studying the topology of the image of $f$. When $f$ is quasihomogeneous and has corank $1$, we present a characterization of the fold components of the double point curve $D(f)$. In our setting, we also consider Zariski multiplicity question for a pair of germs of (parametrized) quasihomogeneous surfaces $(\textbf{X},0)$ and $(\textbf{Y},0)$ in $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ with one dimensional singular set. Finally, we characterize Whitney equisingularity of an unfolding $\mathcal{F} =(f_t,t)$ of $f$ through the constancy of the Milnor number of a single plane curve in the source. This gives in some sense an answer to a question by Ruas in $1994$.

Area-minimizing Hypersurfaces in Singular Ambient Manifolds

Abstract:We study area-minimizing hypersurfaces in singular ambient manifolds whose tangent cones have nonnegative scalar curvature on their regular parts. We prove that the singular set of the hypersurface has codimension at least 3 in our settings. We also give an example in which n-dimensional minimizing hypersurface in an ambient space as given above may have singularities of dimension $n-3$. This shows that our regularity result is sharp.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to establish a new and efficient characterization of quasi-homogeneous isolated singularities of free curves and nearly free curves $C$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The criterion will be in terms of the first syzygy matrix associated with the Jacobian ideal of $f$ where $f=0$ is the equation of the plane curve $C$.

Abstract:We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a full classification of the separable hypersurfaces of constant sectional curvature in the Euclidean $n$-space $\mathbb{R}^n$. In dimension $n=3$, this classification was solved by Hasanis and López [Manuscripta Math. 166, 403-417 (2021)]. When $n>3$, we prove that the separable hypersurfaces of null sectional curvature are three particular families of such hypersurfaces. Finally, we prove that hyperspheres are the only separable hypersurfaces with nonzero constant sectional curvature.

Abstract:A subvariety of a quasi-projective complex variety $X$ is called ``universally irreducible'' if its preimage inside the universal cover of $X$ is irreducible. In this paper we investigate sufficient conditions for universal irreducibility. We consider in detail complete intersection subvarieties of small codimension inside Siegel moduli spaces of any finite level. Moreover we show that, for $g\geq 3$, every Siegel modular form is the product of finitely many irreducible analytic functions on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathbb{H}_g$. We also discuss the special case of singular theta series of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ and of Schottky forms.
