Abstract:In this study, a number of wear and tensile tests were performed to elucidate the effects of deep cryogenic treatment on the wear behavior and mechanical properties (hardness and tensile strength) of AISI H13 tool steel. In accordance with this purpose, three different heat treatments (conventional heat treatment (CHT), deep cryogenic treatment (DCT), and deep cryogenic treatment and tempering (DCTT)) were applied to tool steel samples. DCT and DCTT samples were held in nitrogen gas at −145 °C for 24 h. Wear tests were conducted on a dry pin-on-disk device using two loads of 60 and 80 N, two sliding velocities of 0.8 and 1 m/s, and a wear distance of 1000 m. All test results showed that DCT improved the adhesive wear resistance and mechanical properties of AISI H13 steel. The formation of small-sized and uniformly distributed carbide particles and the transformation of retained austenite to martensite played an important role in the improvements in the wear resistance and mechanical properties. After cleavage fracture, the surfaces of all samples were characterized by the cracking of primary carbides, while the DCT and DCTT samples displayed microvoid formation by decohesion of the fine carbides precipitated during the cryo-tempering process.

Abstract:The effect of deep cryogenic treatment (−196°C) on the properties of some tool steels was studied by means of both field tests on real tools and laboratory tests. The execution of the deep cryogenic treatment on quenched and tempered high speed steel tools increases hardness, reduces tool consumption and down time for the equipment set up, thus leading to cost reductions of about 50%. A laboratory investigation on an AISI M2 and an AISI H13 steel confirms the possibility of increasing the wear resistance and toughness by carrying out the treatment after the usual heat treatment.

Abstract:Cryogenic treatment is a heat treatment process to improve the performances of tool and die steels. The experiments presented in the paper showed that the deep cryogenic treatment could improve the wear resistance of M 10 carbide inserts. A complete phase transition of Co was observed by using X-ray diffraction spectrum after deep cryogenic treatment. This transition increased the abrasion resistance of M 10 carbide inserts.

Abstract:Cryogenic treatments are considered a good way to reduce the retained austenite content and improve the performance of tool steels. Four different heat treatments, two of which included a deep cryogenic stage, were applied in this study to an H13 tool steel, subsequently determining its mechanical properties by means of tensile, hardness and fracture toughness tests. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to gain an insight into the microstructural evolution of these heat treatments during all the stages.It was concluded that the application of a deep cryogenic treatment to H13 steel induces higher thermal stresses and structural defects, producing a dispersed network of fine carbides after the subsequent tempering stages, which were responsible for a significant improvement in the fracture toughness of this steel without modifying other mechanical properties. Although the application of a deep cryogenic treatment reduces the retained austenite content, there is a minimum innate content which cannot be transformed by heat treatment. Nevertheless, this austenite is hence believed to be stable enough and should not transform during the normal service life of forging dies.

Abstract:Shock resisting cold work tool steel is one of the most applicable steels for several applications such as cutting sheets, chisels, hammers, etc. It has been categorized according to its characteristic properties into different categories as hot and cold work tool steel. This work aims to study the effects of conventional and deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on shock-resistant cold work tool steel. In this study, three alloys were cast and prepared with different carbides forming elements such as vanadium (V) and niobium (Nb). The samples were quenched in water at 900 °C followed by a tempering treatment at 200 °C for 30 min. After quenching in water, the other samples were subjected to DCT at −196 °C for a 5-h soaking time, followed by tempering at 200 °C for 30 min. To study the wear behavior of the three heats, pin-on-disc tests were used, where the sliding speed was kept constant at a value of 0.5 m/s. The normal applied loads during the wear test were 50 N and 100 N. In order to understand the wear behavior, wear tracks were studied by scanning electron microscopy, coefficient of friction and weight loss were evaluated. The results showed that the lowest average coefficient of friction was achieved by a sample of steel 3 with quenching + DCT at a load of 100 N of load by value of 0.33. A sample of steel 3 at load 50 N achieved the lowest weight loss by using DCT plus tempering. On the other hand, a sample of steel 3 achieved the lowest weight loss at 100 N by using quenching + DCT.

Abstract:Hot work tool steels like AISI H13 are used mainly for high-temperature metal forming operations. The current research includes subjecting AISI H13 tool steel to deep cryogenic treatment and subsequently studying their wear behavior. The specimens were hardened at 1020 °C followed by double tempering at 500 °C for 2 h. The other set of specimens were hardened, double tempered, cryogenically treated (− 185 °C) at different cryosoaking periods. Microstructural analysis and hardness measurements were carried out along with the wear testing on pin-on-disk machine with SAE 52100 counter-face material at room temperature conditions. Double tempering was chosen as a treatment post-hardening. Deep cryogenically treated specimens indicated improved hardness and wear resistance as compared to conventionally treated materials which could be attributed to the precipitation of fine carbides in the matrix of tempered martensite. Minimum wear rate assisted in optimizing soft-tempering temperature at 50 °C post-deep cryogenic treatment.

Abstract:To solve the failure problem of hot stamping tool, the CR7V steel was deep cryogenically treated at different dwelling times with multiple tempering. The hardness, impact toughness and wear resistance of the CR7V steel were examined, and the effects of deep cryogenic treatment on the microstructure of the CR7V steel were studied by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that deep cryogenic treatment has little effect on the hardness of the tempered CR7V steel, but improves its impact toughness and wear resistance. The improvement in mechanical properties is a result of the combination of dissolution of large carbide particles, formation of small-sized and uniformly distributed carbide particles and fine tempered martensite structure. The cryogenic treatment is optimized as follows: vacuum gas quenching, deep cryogenic treatment at − 196 °C for 6 h and triple tempering at 560 °C for 2 h, which improves the wear resistance by 68% and the impact toughness by 58% compared to the conventional heat treatment.

Abstract:The service life of hot work die steel is significantly influenced by its microstructure and thermal fatigue properties. This paper explores the impact of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on H13 hot work die steel's microstructural evolution and mechanical as well as thermal fatigue properties. The results demonstrate that a portion of unstable retained austenite transforms into martensite during deep cryogenic treatment and numerous finely dispersed carbides precipitate from the matrix, thereby enhancing hardness. Analysis of the average crack length and distribution of thermal fatigue test samples reveals that the average crack length and crack density of DCT-treated samples are lower than those of non-DCT-treated samples. Thermal fatigue cracks in the specimens primarily originated from trigeminal grain boundaries and the carbides are found at the crack tips. DCT facilitates the precipitation of fine and dispersed carbides, imparting a robust pinning effect on boundary migration and thereby impeding the initiation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks. Furthermore, deep cryogenic treatment results in a reduction in the number of M 23 C 6 type carbides with large particles and an increase in smaller M 6 C type carbides during the thermal fatigue test. This indicates a positive influence on the carbide distribution and further contributes to the improved thermal fatigue resistance of the hot work die steel.

The present investigation examines the effect of deep cryogenic treatment on the enhancement of mechanical properties, such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, tensile strength and impact strength of the plunger material 100Cr6 bearing steel. The improvement in the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, tensile strength and impact strength of the deep cryogenically treated samples over the conventionally heat-treated ones, is 50%, 26%, 13% and 27% respectively. This study suggests that the formation of very small carbides dispersed in the tempered martensite structure, can be the main reason for the enhancement of certain mechanical properties, along with the retained austenite transformations.

Abstract:Deep cryogenic treatment process and the effect of the treatment on microstructure,phase structure,residual stress,mechanical properties and cutting performance for cemented carbide are summarized. Some literature shows that the cryogenic treatment process consists of cooling and isothermal stages,a few researches follow by tempering; the content of η phase increases and the grain size decreases in the cemented carbide after the cryogenic treatment,and the tungsten carbide particles are more firmly held by cobalt,but some literature reports that little microstructure is changed; the cobalt phase transforms form FCC to HCP phase,but the WC phase remains stable; It is agreed on that deep cryogenic treatment can improve the wear resistance and extend the service life of cemented carbide,but there are different opinions upon the effect on the residual stress and hardness changes. The mechanism research of deep cryogenic treatment on cemented carbide and process optimization are current research orientation.

Abstract:The bad quality of machining surfaces caused by the micro wear of pressing parts has been a very big trouble for the engineers over the past decades. In order to decrease the surface wear, the technology of heat treatment is used popular. Many papers about the heat treatment technology had been proposed. Especially, the deep cryogenic treatment has been used widely for the purpose of wear-resistance in the industry. Moreover, the method of using variations of surface magnetization to monitor the dynamic tribological properties between the metal pairs has been applied successfully by the author. Therefore, this paper is base on the above statements to further investigate the tribological properties of the tool steel by deep cryogenic treatment. It can be clarified for effects of different deep cryogenic treatment temperatures on wear-resistance of the tool steel DC53. Besides, the purpose of better quality and faster product speed of the pressing process can then be obtained.

Abstract:Abstract Interest has been shown in cryogenic treatments over the last seven decades mainly due to the transformation of retained austenite and the precipitation of fine carbides. By changing the microstructure, cryogenic treatments can improve wear resistance and hardness to some extent. In this work, the effect of multiple deep cryo-treating and tempering (DCTT) on microstructural evolution in 52100 bearing steel has been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Rockwell hardness tests were also conducted to verify the microstructure evolution. Moreover, the dilatometry was used to estimate the dimensional stability. The results demonstrated that DCTT not only contributes to the precipitation of nano-size carbides, but also leads to a more homogeneous size distribution. It was also proved that the variation of carbides and hardness could be attributed to the synergy of decrease of retained austenite and movement of carbon atoms brought in DCTT. Furthermore, the sample subjected to DCTT exhibits the highest wear resistance property.

Abstract:The tool steel Cr7V was treated by quenching at 1030℃for 0.5 h, followed by deep cryogenic treatment at-196℃for 3, 6 and12 h and tempering at 560℃for 2 h by three times.The effect of deep cryogenic treatment parameters on wear resistance of the Cr7V steel was studied by pin-on-disc friction and wear tests.The spectrums of the specimens with different heat treatment parameters were measured by means of XRD.The ray diffraction method was applied to evaluate the dislocation density of the specimens.The results show that the cryogenic treatment has the similar effect on the wear resistance and the dislocation density of the Cr7V steel, with the increase of the holding time, the wear resistance and the dislocation density has a tendency of increasing first and then decreasing.The specimen of cryogenic treated for 6 h and tempering by three times has mass loss of 87.6 mg and dislocation density of 1.4295×1016m-2, the specimen shows the best properties, of which the wear resistance is improved by 53％and the dislocation density is increased by 28％compared with the specimen of conventional treatment.

Abstract:The effects of cryogenic treatment on microstructure, hardness, red hardness and wear resistance of M35 high speed steel(HSS) were studied by means of scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractograph, friction and wear tester and Rockwell hardness tester. The results show that with the increase of tempering temperature, the residual austenite in M35 HSS decreases and the grain size increases gradually. After deep cryogenic treatment (DCT), the grain size of M35 HSS is refined and the wear volume is reduced. DCT at 525°C has the best wear resistance. With the increase of tempering temperature, the hardness of M35 HSS decreases first and then increases, and finally decreases sharply. The Rockwell hardness of M35 HSS at 525 °C is the highest, which is 67.1 HRC. The peak hardness of Rockwell increased by 0.7 HRC and the tempering temperature decreased from 550 °C to 525 °C, which showed good stability of red hardness.

Abstract:In this paper, HSS bit, tap, vertical milling cutter, YT15 milling cutter, 9CrSi and Cr12 Mold materials are treated by deep cryogenic. The hardness and red hardness of materials before and after deep cryogenic are tested and contrasted. And industrial production is carried out on the part of tools and molds. The result indicates that deep cryogenic can improve the hardness and red hardness of materials to some extent. It can also improve the wear resistance of materials, which extends the service life of tools and molds. Therefore, the deep cryogenic treatment is one of stong methods to improve the service life of tools and molds.

Abstract:The tempered M35 samples were deep-cryogenically treated (DCT) at temperature - 240°C for a long time. The microstructure and hardness were characterized by SEM, and Rockwell together with Vicker's indenter respectively. The wear resistance was tested by a ball-on-disc friction and wear testing against Si3N4 balls. Comparing to high-speed steel without further treatment, the size of grains was reduced to 9.94 μm and promoted the formation of carbides after DCT. However, it was found that the hardness of the samples before and after DCT kept almost the same. Under high load, the wear resistance was slightly improved. This was probably responsible for carbides precipitation and Co precipitated from the α-Fe matrix during DCT.

Abstract:A series of reciprocating wear tests were performed on the deep cryogenically treated and conventionally heat-treated samples of 100Cr6 bearing steel to study the wear resistance. The worn surfaces as well as the wear debris were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The improvement in wear resistance of the deep cryogenically treated samples ranges from 49% to 52%. This significant improvement in wear resistance can be attributed to finer carbide precipitation in the tempered martensitic matrix and the transformation of retained austenite into martensite. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the volume fraction of retained austenite in the conventionally heat-treated samples is 14% and that of the deep cryogenically treated samples is only 3%.

Abstract:The ability of cryogenic treatment to improve tool steel performance is well established; however, the selection of optimal heat treatment is pivotal for cost reduction and extended tool life. This investigation delves into the influence of distinct cryogenic and tempering treatments on the hardness, fracture toughness, and tribological properties of Vanadis 6 tool steel. Emphasis was given to comprehending wear mechanisms, wear mode identification, volume loss estimation, and detailed characterization of worn surfaces through scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. The findings reveal an 8–9% increase and a 3% decrease in hardness with cryogenic treatment compared to conventional treatment when tempered at 170 °C and 530 °C, respectively. Cryotreated specimens exhibit an average of 15% improved fracture toughness after tempering at 530 °C compared to conventional treatment. Notably, cryogenic treatment at −140 °C emerges as the optimum temperature for enhanced wear performance in both low- and high-temperature tempering scenarios. The identified wear mechanisms range from tribo-oxidative at lower contacting conditions to severe delaminative wear at intense contacting conditions. These results align with microstructural features, emphasizing the optimal combination of reduced retained austenite and the highest carbide population density observed in −140 °C cryogenically treated steel.
