Abstract:A partition is finitary if all its members are finite. For a set $A$, $\mathscr{B}(A)$ denotes the set of all finitary partitions of $A$. It is shown consistent with $\mathsf{ZF}$ (without the axiom of choice) that there exist an infinite set $A$ and a surjection from $A$ onto $\mathscr{B}(A)$. On the other hand, we prove in $\mathsf{ZF}$ some theorems concerning $\mathscr{B}(A)$ for infinite sets $A$, among which are the following: (1) If there is a finitary partition of $A$ without singleton blocks, then there are no surjections from $A$ onto $\mathscr{B}(A)$ and no finite-to-one functions from $\mathscr{B}(A)$ to $A$. (2) For all $n\in\omega$, $|A^n|<|\mathscr{B}(A)|$. (3) $|\mathscr{B}(A)|\neq|\mathrm{seq}(A)|$, where $\mathrm{seq}(A)$ is the set of all finite sequences of elements of $A$.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews and Paule studied Schmidt type partitions using MacMahon's Partition Analysis and obtained various interesting results. In this paper, we focus on the combinatorics of Schmidt type partition theorems and characterize them in a general and refined form. In addition, we also present some overpartition analogues of Schmidt type partition theorems.

Debunking Cantor: New Set-Theoretical and Logical Considerations

Abstract:For more than a century, Cantor's theory of transfinite numbers has played a pivotal role in set theory, with ramifications that extend to many areas of mathematics. This article extends earlier findings with a fresh look at the critical facts of Cantor's theory: i) Cantor's widely renowned Diagonalization Argument (CDA) is fully refuted by a set of counter-examples that expose the fallacy of this proof. ii) The logical inconsistencies of CDA are revisited, exposing the short-comings of CDA's implementation of the method of proof by contradiction. iii) The denumerability of the power set of the set of the natural numbers, P(N), is substantiated by a proof that takes full account of all the infinite subsets of N. Such a result confirms the denumerability of the set of the real numbers, R, and with it the countable nature of the continuum. iv) Given that the denumerable character of (probably) all infinite sets makes their comparison in terms of one-to-one correspondences a rather pointless exercise, a new concept of relative cardinality is introduced which facilitates a quantitative evaluation of their different magnitudes.

Abstract:In this paper, two types of general sets determined by partial quotients of continued fractions over the field of formal Laurent series with coefficients from a given finite field are studied. The Hausdorff dimensions of {x:degAn(x)⩾ϕ(n),for infinitely many n} and {x:degAn(x)⩾ϕ(n),∀n⩾1} are determined completely, where An(x) denotes the partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion (in case of Laurent series) of x and ϕ(n) is a positive valued function defined on natural numbers N.
A combinatorial proof of a partition perimeter inequality

Abstract:The partition perimeter is a statistic defined to be one less than the sum of the number of parts and the largest part. Recently, Amdeberhan, Andrews, and Ballantine proved the following analog of Glaisher's theorem: for all $m \geq 2$ and $n \geq 1$, there are at least as many partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts $\not \equiv 0 \pmod{m}$ as partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts repeating fewer than $m$ times. In this work, we provide a combinatorial proof of their theorem by relating the combinatorics of the partition perimeter to that of compositions. Using this technique, we also show that a composition theorem of Huang implies a refinement of another perimeter theorem of Fu and Tang.

Abstract:We prove that the number of even parts and the number of times that parts are repeated have the same distribution over integer partitions with a fixed perimeter. This refines Straub's analog of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem. We generalize the two concerned statistics to those of the part-difference less than d and the parts not congruent to 1 modulo d+1 and prove a distribution inequality, that has a similar flavor as Alder's ex-conjecture, over partitions with a prescribed perimeter. Both of our results are proven analytically and combinatorially.

Abstract:The famous partition theorem of Euler states that partitions of $n$ into distinct parts are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into odd parts. Another famous partition theorem due to MacMahon states that the number of partitions of $n$ with all parts repeated at least once equals the number of partitions of $n$ where all parts must be even or congruent to $3 \pmod 6$. These partition theorems were further extended by Glaisher, Andrews, Subbarao, Nyirenda and Mugwangwavari. In this paper, we utilize the Chinese remainder theorem to prove a comprehensive partition theorem that encompasses all existing partition theorems. We also give a natural generalization of Euler's theorem based on a special complete residue system. Furthermore, we establish interesting congruence connections between the partition function $p(n)$ and related partition functions.

Precision Asymptotics for Partitions Featuring False-Indefinite Theta Functions

Abstract:Andrews-Dyson-Hickerson, Cohen build a striking relation between q-hypergeometric series, real quadratic fields, and Maass forms. Thanks to the works of Lewis-Zagier and Zwegers we have a complete understanding on the part of these relations pertaining to Maass forms and false-indefinite theta functions. In particular, we can systematically distinguish and study the class of false-indefinite theta functions related to Maass forms. A crucial component here is the framework of mock Maass theta functions built by Zwegers in analogy with his earlier work on indefinite theta functions and their application to Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Given this understanding, a natural question is to what extent one can utilize modular properties to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the associated Fourier coefficients, especially in view of their relevance to combinatorial objects. In this paper, we develop the relevant methods to study such a question and show that quite detailed results can be obtained on the asymptotic development, which also enable Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher type exact formulas under the right conditions. We develop these techniques by concentrating on a concrete example involving partitions with parts separated by parity and derive an asymptotic expansion that includes all the exponentially growing terms.

Abstract:We write $S_{\leq n}(A)$ and $\Part_{\fin}(A)$ for the set of permutations with at most $n$ non-fixed points, where $n$ is a natural number, and the set of partitions whose members are finite, respectively, of a set $A$. Among our results, we show, in the Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory, that $|\Part_{\fin}(A)| \nleq |S_{\leq n}(A)|$ for any infinite set $A$ and if $A$ can be linearly ordered, then $|S_{\leq n}(A)| < |\Part_{\fin}(A)|$ while the statement ``$|S_{\leq n}(A)|\leq|\Part_{\fin}(A)|$ for all infinite sets $A$" is not provable for $n\geq 3$.

Abstract:In this paper, the author further reveals some intrinsic properties of the Cantor set. By erties, the author gives a new method for calculating the exact value of the Hausdorff measure of the C and shows the facts that each covering which consists of basic intervals, in which any basic interval can pletely contain the other, is the best covering of the Cantor set, and the Hausdorff measure of the Cant be determined by coverings which only consist of basic intervals.

Abstract:The questions of the measure and finding open intervals in certain sets of sums and products of elements of the middle third Cantor set (or a variant of it), have generated considerable interest recently. A broad general framework that makes it possible to deal with these questions was outlined by Astels. The question of finding the measure of the product of the middle third Cantor set was considered recently in an article by Athreya, Reznick and Tyson. Astels' methods apply to product sets upon considering a generalized logarithmic Cantor set, while Athreya, Reznick and Tyson's methods become difficult in dealing with sums or products of $m$'th powers as $m$ becomes large. With a new elementary dynamical technique, we can deal with both the questions of sums and products in a satisfactory way, and the proofs are of the same level of complexity as that of an elementary proof of the fact that the sum of two copies of the middle third Cantor set is $[0,2]$. Further, some observations are made on the question of intersections of one central Cantor set with an affine image of another central Cantor set both with arbitrary parameters.

Abstract:Several aspects of the manifestation of the causality principle in LQP (local quantum physics) are reviewed or presented. Particular emphasis is given to those properties which are typical for LQP in the sense that they do go beyond the structure of general quantum theory and even escape the Lagrangian quantization methods of standard QFT. The most remarkable are those relating causality to the modular Tomita-Takesaki theory, since they bring in the basic concepts of antiparticles, charge superselections as well as internal and external (geometric and hidden) symmetries.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Abstract:Let $m\in\mathbb N_{\ge 2}$, and let $\mathcal K=\{K_\lambda: \lambda\in(0, 1/m]\}$ be a class of Cantor sets, where $K_{\lambda}=\{\sum_{i=1}^\infty d_i\lambda^i: d_i\in\{0,1,\ldots, m-1\}, i\ge 1\}$. We investigate in this paper the likelyhood of a fixed point in the Cantor sets of $\mathcal K$. More precisely, for a fixed point $x\in(0,1)$ we consider the parameter set $\Lambda(x)=\{\lambda\in(0,1/m]: x\in K_\lambda\}$, and show that $\Lambda(x)$ is a topological Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and full Hausdorff dimension. Furthermore, by constructing a sequence of Cantor subsets with large thickness in $\Lambda(x)$ we prove that the intersection $\Lambda(x)\cap\Lambda(y)$ also has full Hausdorff dimension for any $x, y\in(0,1)$.

Abstract:We study partitions of complex numbers as sums of non-negative powers of a fixed algebraic number . We prove that if is real quadratic, then the number of partitions is always finite if and only if some conjugate of is larger than 1. Further, we show that for satisfying a certain condition, the partition function attains all non-negative integers as values.
