Abstract:In this paper, we develop spectral analysis of a discrete non-Hermitian quantum system that is a discrete counterpart of some continuous quantum systems on a complex contour. In particular, simple conditions for discreteness of the spectrum are established.

Abstract:The question of the existence of active tidal disruption around various dSph galaxies remains controversial. That debate often centers on the nature (bound vs. unbound) of extended populations of stars. However, the more fundamental issue of the very existence of the extended populations is still contentious. We present an evaluation of the debate centering on one particular dSph, Carina, for which claims both for and against the existence of stars beyond the King radius have been made. Our review includes an examination of all previous studies bearing on the Carina radial profile and shows that the survey method which achieves the highest detected dSph signal-to-background in the outer parts of the galaxy is the Washington M, T2 + DDO51 (MTD) filter approach from Paper II in this series. We then address statistical methods used to evaluate the reliability of MTD surveys in the presence of photometric errors and for which a new, a posteriori statistical analysis methodology is provided. Finally, these statistical methods are tested by new spectroscopy of stars in the MTD-selected Carina candidate sample. Of 74 candidate giants with follow-up spectroscopy, the MTD technique identified 61 new Carina members, including 8 stars outside the King radius. From a sample of 29 stars not initially identified as candidate Carina giants but that lie just outside of our selection criteria, 12 have radial velocities consistent with membership, including 5 extratidal stars. Carina is shown to have an extended population of giant stars extending to a major axis radius of 40' (1.44x the nominal King radius).

Entanglement Spectrum Dynamics as a Probe for Non-Hermitian Bulk-Boundary Correspondence in Systems with Periodic Boundaries

Abstract:It has recently been established that open quantum systems may exhibit a strong spectral sensitivity to boundary conditions, known as the non-Hermitian/Liouvillian skin effect (NHSE/LSE), making the topological properties of the system boundary-condition sensitive. In this Letter, we ask the query: Can topological phase transitions of open quantum systems, captured by open boundary conditioned invariants, be observed in the dynamics of a system in a periodic boundary condition, even in the presence of NHSE/LSE? We affirmatively respond to this question, by considering the quench dynamics of entanglement spectrum in a periodic open quantum fermionic system. We demonstrate that the entanglement spectrum exhibits zero-crossings only when this periodic system is quenched from a topologically trivial to non-trivial phase, defined from the spectrum in open boundary conditions, even in systems featuring LSE. Our results reveal that non-Hermitian topological phases leave a distinctive imprint on the unconditional dynamics within a subsystem of fermionic systems.

Abstract:The spectrum (of the Dirichlet Laplacian) of non-compact, non-complete Riemannian manifolds is much less understood than their compact counterparts. In particular it is often not even known whether such a manifold has any discrete spectra. In this article, we will prove that a certain type of non-compact, non-complete manifold called the quantum tube has non-empty discrete spectrum. The quantum tube is a tubular neighborhood built about an immersed complete manifold in Euclidean space. The terminology of “quantum” implies that the geometry of the underlying complete manifold can induce discrete spectra – hence quantization. We will show how the Weyl tube invariants appear in determining the existence of discrete spectra. This is an extension and generalization, on the geometric side, of the previous work of the author on the “quantum layer.”

Abstract:We study the properties of the entanglement spectrum in gapped non-interacting non-Hermitian systems, and its relation to the topological properties of the system Hamiltonian. Two different families of entanglement Hamiltonians can be defined in non-Hermitian systems, depending on whether we consider only right (or equivalently only left) eigenstates or a combination of both left and right eigenstates. We show that their entanglement spectra can still be computed efficiently, as in the Hermitian limit. We discuss how symmetries of the Hamiltonian map into symmetries of the entanglement spectrum depending on the choice of the many-body state. Through several examples in one and two dimensions, we show that the biorthogonal entanglement Hamiltonian directly inherits the topological properties of the Hamiltonian for line gapped phases, with characteristic singular and energy zero modes. The right (left) density matrix carries distinct information on the topological properties of the many-body right (left) eigenstates themselves. In purely point gapped phases, when the energy bands are not separable, the relation between the entanglement Hamiltonian and the system Hamiltonian breaks down.

Abstract:For a long time, it was presumed that continuum bands could be readily encompassed by open-boundary spectra, irrespective of the system's modest dimensions. However, our findings reveal a nuanced picture: under open-boundary conditions, the proliferation of complex eigenvalues progresses in a sluggish, oscillating manner as the system expands. Consequently, even in larger systems, the overlap between continuum bands and open-boundary eigenvalues becomes elusive, with the surprising twist that the count of these complex eigenvalues may actually diminish with increasing system size. This counterintuitive trend underscores that the pursuit of an ideal, infinite-sized system scenario does not necessarily align with enlarging the system size. Notably, despite the inherent non-Hermiticity of our system, the eigenstates distribute themselves in a manner reminiscent of Bloch waves. These discoveries hold potential significance for both theoretical explorations and experimental realizations of non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian quantum systems exhibit fascinating characteristics such as non-Hermitian topological phenomena and skin effect, yet their studies are limited by the intrinsic difficulties associated with their eigenvalue problems, especially in larger systems and higher dimensions. In Hermitian systems, the semiclassical theory has played an active role in analyzing spectrum, eigenstate, phase, transport properties, etc. Here, we establish a complex semiclassical theory applicable to non-Hermitian quantum systems by an analytical continuation of the physical variables such as momentum, position, time, and energy in the equations of motion and quantization condition to the complex domain. Further, we propose a closed-orbit scheme and physical meaning under such complex variables. We demonstrate that such a framework straightforwardly yields complex energy spectra and quantum states, topological phases and transitions, and even the skin effect in non-Hermitian quantum systems, presenting an unprecedented perspective toward nontrivial non-Hermitian physics, even with larger systems and higher dimensions.

Fragile non-Bloch spectrum and unconventional Green's function

Abstract:In non-Hermitian systems, it is a counterintuitive feature of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) that the energy spectrum and eigenstates can be totally different under open or periodic boundary conditions, suggesting that non-Hermitian spectra can be extremely sensitive to non-local perturbations. Here, we show that a wide range of non-Hermitian models with NHSE can even be highly sensitive to local perturbation under open boundary conditions. The spectrum of these models is so fragile that it can be significantly modified by adding only exponentially small perturbations on boundaries. Intriguingly, we show that such fragile spectra are quantified by the Green's function exhibiting unconventional V-shape asymptotic behaviors. Accordingly, bi-directional exponential amplification can be observed. As an interesting consequence, we find a real-to-complex transition of the bulk spectrum induced by exponentially small boundary perturbations. Finally, we reveal a hierarchy of the asymptotic behaviors of non-Hermitian Green's functions, which restricts the frequency range for the presence of unconventional Green's functions.

Real spectra in one-dimensional single-band non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Abstract:In general, the energy spectrum of a non-Hermitian system turns out to be complex, which is not so satisfactory since the time evolution of eigenstates with complex eigenvalues is either exponentially growing or decaying. Here we provide a sufficient and necessary condition of the real spectrum under open boundary conditions for one-dimensional non-Hermitian tight-binding Hamiltonians. The necessity is directly related to the fact that the generalized Brillouin zone in one dimension is a closed loop with the origin in its interior. For some simple models, we demonstrate the sufficiency by analytically determining when the preimage of the characteristic polynomial contains a loop and showing that this loop is just the generalized Brillouin zone itself. For more complex models, the numerical results are shown. Our results indicate that real spectra are more common than one may have expected in non-Hermitian systems and are helpful for designing non-Hermitian models with real spectra.

Abstract:We consider a non-relativistic quantum particle interacting with a singular potential supported by two parallel straight lines in the plane. We locate the essential spectrum under the hypothesis that the interaction asymptotically approaches a constant value and find conditions which guarantee either the existence of discrete eigenvalues or Hardy-type inequalities. For a class of our models admitting a mirror symmetry, we also establish the existence of embedded eigenvalues and show that they turn into resonances after introducing a small perturbation.

Abstract:Abstract We study the spectra of quantum trees of finite cone type. These are quantum graphs whose geometry has a certain homogeneity, and which carry a finite set of edge lengths, coupling constants and potentials on the edges. We show the spectrum consists of bands of purely absolutely continuous spectrum, along with a discrete set of eigenvalues. Afterwards, we study random perturbations of such trees, at the level of edge length and coupling, and prove the stability of pure AC spectrum, along with resolvent estimates.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have gained a lot of interest in recent years. However, notions of chaos and localization in such systems have not reached the same level of maturity as in the Hermitian systems. Here, we consider non-Hermitian interacting disordered Hamiltonians and attempt to analyze their chaotic behavior or lack of it through the lens of the recently introduced non-Hermitian analog of the spectral form factor and the complex spacing ratio. We consider three widely relevant non-Hermitian models which are unique in their ways and serve as excellent platforms for such investigations. Two of the models considered are short-ranged and have different symmetries. The third model is long-ranged whose Hermitian counterpart has itself become a subject of growing interest. All these models exhibit a deep connection with the non-Hermitian random matrix theory of corresponding symmetry classes at relatively weak disorder. At relatively strong disorder, the models show the absence of complex eigenvalue correlation, thereby, corresponding to Poisson statistics. Abstract:We study discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators on ℓ2(Z)$${\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})}$$ with potentials defined by γ-Hölder functions. We prove a general statement that for γ > 1/2 and under the condition of positive Lyapunov exponents, measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of measures of spectra of periodic approximants. An important ingredient in our analysis is a general result on uniformity of convergence from above in the subadditive ergodic theorem for strictly ergodic cocycles.

Quantum-Classical Correspondence of Non-Hermitian Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:Real-to-complex spectral transitions and the associated spontaneous symmetry breaking of eigenstates are central to non-Hermitian physics, yet their underlying physical mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we resolve the mystery by employing the complex path integral formalism and developing a generalized Gutzwiller trace formula. These methodologies enable us to establish a universal quantum-classical correspondence that precisely links the real or complex nature of individual energy levels to the symmetry properties of their corresponding semiclassical orbits. Specifically, in systems with a general $\eta$-pseudo-Hermitian symmetry, real energy levels are quantized along periodic orbits that preserve the corresponding classical $S_\eta$ symmetry. In contrast, complex conjugate energy levels arise from semiclassical orbits that individually break the $S_\eta$ symmetry but together form $S_\eta$-symmetric pairs. This framework provides a unified explanation for the spectral behaviors in various continuous non-Hermitian models and for the ${PT}$ transition in two-level systems. Our work uncovers the physical mechanism of non-Hermitian symmetry breaking and introduces a new perspective with broad implications for the control and application of non-Hermitian phenomena.

Abstract:We use the invariant operator method to investigate the quantum characteristics of the inverted oscillator. We introduce a unitary transformation that maps a time-dependent general Hermitian linear invariant operator to a time-independent one, which describes a harmonic oscillator with a unit mass and a constant frequency. Our investigation includes three distinguished cases: negative frequency, zero frequency, and positive frequency. Our most interesting result concerns the last case. For the case of negative frequency, we propose a new inner product by the introduction of the new metric operator η. Coherent state for this case will be constructed.

Abstract:Measuring the power spectral density of a stochastic process, such as a stochastic force or magnetic field, is a fundamental task in many sensing applications. Quantum noise is becoming a major limiting factor to such a task in future technology, especially in optomechanics for temperature, stochastic gravitational wave, and decoherence measurements. Motivated by this concern, here we prove a measurement-independent quantum limit to the accuracy of estimating the spectrum parameters of a classical stochastic process coupled to a quantum dynamical system. We demonstrate our results by analyzing the data from a continuous-optical-phase-estimation experiment and showing that the experimental performance with homodyne detection is close to the quantum limit. We further propose a spectral photon-counting method that can attain quantum-optimal performance for weak modulation and a coherent-state input, with an error scaling superior to that of homodyne detection at low signal-to-noise ratios.

Spectral Properties of the Symmetry Generators of Conformal Quantum Mechanics: A Path-Integral Approach

Abstract:A path-integral approach is used to study the spectral properties of the generators of the SO(2,1) symmetry of conformal quantum mechanics (CQM). In particular, we consider the CQM version that corresponds to the weak-coupling regime of the inverse square potential. We develop a general framework to characterize a generic symmetry generator $G$ (linear combinations of the Hamiltonian $H$, special conformal operator $K$, and dilation operator $D$), from which the path-integral propagators follow, leading to a complete spectral decomposition. This is done for the three classes of operators: elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic. We also highlight novel results for the hyperbolic operators, with a continuous spectrum, and their quantum-mechanical interpretation. The spectral technique developed for the eigensystem of continuous-spectrum operators can be generalized to other operator problems.

On the spectrum of a differential operator on a Hilbert-Pólya space

Abstract:In this paper we study the spectrum of a fundamental differential operator on a Hilbert-Pólya space. A number is an eigenvalue of this differential operator if and only if it is a nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function. An explicit formula is given for the eigenfunction associated with each nontrivial zero of the zeta function. Every eigenfunction is characterized via the Poisson summation formula by a sequence of mysterious functions whose explicit formulas are given.

Abstract:I will show that operator of analytic (harmonic) continuation on a lattice graph has a positive spectrum. I use a theorem about positivity of eigenvalues of totally positive matrices. I conjecture that by approximation the similar result holds in continuous case on a plane.
