Abstract:Let $\beta>0$ and consider an $n$-point process $\lambda_1, \lambda_2,..., \lambda_n$ from Hermite $\beta$ ensemble on the real line $\mathbb{R}$. Dumitriu and Edelman discovered a tri-diagonal matrix model and established the global Wigner semicircle law for normalized empirical measures. In this paper we prove that the average number of states in a small interval in the bulk converges in probability when the length of the interval is larger than $\sqrt {\log n}$, i.e., local semicircle law holds. And the number of positive states in $(0,\infty)$ is proved to fluctuate normally around its mean $n/2$ with variance like $\log n/\pi^2\beta$. The proofs rely largely on the way invented by Valk$\acute{o}$ and Vir$\acute{a}$g of counting states in any interval and the classical martingale argument.

Abstract:This undergraduate thesis is concerned with developing the tools of differential geometry and semiclassical analysis needed to understand the the quantum ergodicity theorem of Schnirelman (1974), Zelditch (1987), and Colin de Verdière (1985) and the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). The former states that, on any Riemannian manifold with negative curvature or ergodic geodesic flow, the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator equidistribute in phase space with density 1. Under the same assumptions, the latter states that the eigenfunctions induce a sequence of Wigner probability measures on fibers of the Hamiltonian in phase space, and these measures converge in the weak-* topology to the uniform Liouville measure. If true, the conjecture implies that such eigenfunctions equidistribute in the high-eigenvalue limit with no exceptional "scarring" patterns. This physically means that the finest details of chaotic Hamiltonian systems can never reflect their quantum-mechanical behaviors, even in the semiclassical limit. The main contribution of this thesis is to contextualize the question of quantum ergodicity and quantum unique ergodicity in an elementary analytic and geometric framework. In addition to presenting and summarizing numerous important proofs, such as Colin de Verdière's proof of the quantum ergodicity theorem, we perform graphical simulations of certain billiard flows and expositorily discuss several themes in the study of quantum chaos.

Quantum ergodicity for Eisenstein series on hyperbolic surfaces of large genus

Abstract:We give a quantitative estimate for the quantum mean absolute deviation on hyperbolic surfaces of finite area in terms of geometric parameters such as the genus, number of cusps and injectivity radius. It implies a delocalisation result of quantum ergodicity type for eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on hyperbolic surfaces of finite area that Benjamini-Schramm converge to the hyperbolic plane. We show that this is generic for Mirzakhani's model of random surfaces chosen uniformly with respect to the Weil-Petersson volume. Depending on the particular sequence of surfaces considered this gives a result of delocalisation of most cusp forms or of Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the semiclassical analysis of the lowest dimensional simply connected nilpotent Lie group of step 3, called the Engel group and denoted by ${\mathbb E}$. We are interested in the propagation of the semiclassical measures associated to solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the canonical subLaplacian $\Delta_{\mathbb E}$ and at different time-scales $\tau$. In particular, for $\tau=1$ we recover a quantum-classical correspondence where we observe the fundamental role of abnormal extremal lifts of the Engel group and are able to discuss the speed of the propagation of the singularities. Furthermore, in order to understand the dispersive nature of the subLaplacian, we are led to develop a second-microlocal analysis on particular cones in our phase space. This is done by relating the quasi-contact structure of the group ${\mathbb E}$ to its semiclassical analysis via harmonic analysis. As a consequence, we are able to prove obstruction to local smoothness-type estimates and Strichartz estimates for the Engel subLaplacian.

Abstract:We prove the arithemtic quantum unique ergodicity (AQUE) conjecture for sequences of Hecke--Maass forms on quotients $\Gamma\backslash (\mathbb{H}^{(2)})^r \times (\mathbb{H}^{(3)})^s$. An argument by induction on dimension of the orbit allows us to rule out the limit measure concentrating on closed orbits of proper subgroups despite many returns of the Hecke correspondence to neighborhoods of the orbit.

Suppose $X$ is a finite-area cusped hyperbolic surface, $\chi$ is a random surface representation in $\text{Hom}(\pi_1(X),U(n))$ equipped with a Haar unitary probability measure, and $(\underline{\lambda}(n))_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a sequence of signatures. Let $|\underline{\lambda}(n)|:=\sum_i|\lambda_i(n)|$. A special case of this is that flat unitary bundles associated to $\chi:\pi_1(X)\rightarrow U(n)$ asymptotically almost surely as $n\rightarrow\infty$ have least eigenvalue at least $\frac{1}{4}-\varepsilon$, irrespective of the spectral gap of $X$ itself. This is proved using the Hide--Magee method. Using the spectral theorem above and proving a probabilistic prime geodesic theorem, we also obtain a probabilistic equidistribution theorem for the images under $\chi$ of geodesics of lengths dependent on the rank $n$.

Semiclassical analysis on principal bundles

Abstract:Let $G$ be a compact Lie group. We introduce a semiclassical framework, called Borel-Weil calculus, to investigate $G$-equivariant (pseudo)differential operators acting on $G$-principal bundles over closed manifolds. In this calculus, the semiclassical parameters correspond to the highest roots in the Weyl chamber of the group $G$ that parametrize irreducible representations, and operators are pseudodifferential in the base variable, with values in Toeplitz operators on the flag manifold associated to the group. This monograph unfolds two main applications of our calculus. Firstly, in the realm of dynamical systems, we obtain explicit sufficient conditions for rapid mixing of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic flows obtained as extensions of an Anosov flow to a $G$-principal bundle (for an arbitrary $G$). In particular, when $G = \mathrm{U}(1)$, we prove that the flow on the extension is rapid mixing whenever the Anosov flow is not jointly integrable, and the circle bundle is not torsion. When $G$ is semisimple, we prove that ergodicity of the extension is equivalent to rapid mixing. Secondly, we study the spectral theory of sub-elliptic Laplacians obtained as horizontal Laplacians of a $G$-equivariant connection on a principal bundle. When $G$ is semisimple, we prove that the horizontal Laplacian is globally hypoelliptic as soon as the connection has a dense holonomy group in $G$. Notably, this result encompasses all flat bundles with a dense monodromy group in $G$. We also prove a quantum ergodicity result for flat (and in some situations non-flat) principal bundles under a suitable ergodicity assumption. We believe that this monograph will serve as a cornerstone for future investigations applying the Borel-Weil calculus across different fields.

Abstract:We study joint eigenfunctions of the spherical Hecke algebra acting on $L^2(\Gamma_n \backslash G / K)$ where $G = \text{PGL}(3, F)$ with $F$ a non-archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic, $K = \text{PGL}(3, O)$ with $O$ the ring of integers of $F$, and $(\Gamma_n)$ is a sequence of torsion-free lattices. We prove a form of equidistribution on average for eigenfunctions whose spectral parameters lie in the tempered spectrum when the associated sequence of quotients of the Bruhat-Tits building Benjamini-Schramm converges to the building itself. This result is a higher rank non-archimedean analogue of existing results for graphs and locally symmetric spaces. A recurring theme in the proof is the reduction of many computations to computing the sum of an exponential function over lattice points in a polytope; such expressions can subsequently be simplified using Brion's formula. Along the way of proving our main result we prove several other results which may be of independent interest including a "degenerate" version of Brion's formula which "interpolates" between the usual Brion's formula and the Ehrhart polynomial, an effective rate of convergence for the distribution of spectral parameters to the Plancherel measure under Benjamini-Schramm convergence, and a classification of relative positions of triples of points in buildings of type $\tilde{A}_2$.

New variants of arithmetic quantum ergodicity

Abstract:We establish two new variants of arithmetic quantum ergodicity. The first is for self-dual $\mathrm{GL}_2$ Hecke-Maass newforms over $\mathbb{Q}$ as the level and Laplace eigenvalue vary jointly. The second is a nonsplit analogue wherein almost all restrictions of Hilbert (respectively Bianchi) Hecke-Maass cusp forms to the modular surface dissipate as their Laplace eigenvalues grow.

Abstract:We study semiclassical measures for Laplacian eigenfunctions on compact complex hyperbolic quotients. Geodesic flows on these quotients are a model case of hyperbolic dynamical systems with different expansion/contraction rates in different directions. We show that the support of any semiclassical measure is either equal to the entire cosphere bundle or contains the cosphere bundle of a compact immersed totally geodesic complex submanifold.

Abstract:It is a folklore result in arithmetic quantum chaos that quantum unique ergodicity on the modular surface with an effective rate of convergence follows from subconvex bounds for certain triple product $L$-functions. The physical space manifestation of this result, namely the equidistribution of mass of Hecke-Maass cusp forms, was proven to follow from subconvexity by Watson, whereas the phase space manifestation of quantum unique ergodicity has only previously appeared in the literature for Eisenstein series via work of Jakobson. We detail the analogous phase space result for Hecke-Maass cusp forms. The proof relies on the Watson-Ichino triple product formula together with a careful analysis of certain archimedean integrals of Whittaker functions.

Abstract:We work toward the arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity (AQUE) conjecture for sequences of Hecke--Maass forms on hyperbolic $4$-manifolds. We show that limits of such forms can only scar on totally geodesic $3$-submanifolds, and in fact that all ergodic components of the microlocal lift other than the uniform measure arise from the uniform measures on these submanifolds.

Abstract:Let G be a split semi-simple adjoint group, and S a colored decorated surface, given by an oriented surface with punctures, special boundary points, and a specified collection of boundary intervals. We introduce a moduli space P(G,S) parametrizing G-local system on S with some boundary data, and prove that it carries a cluster Poisson structure, equivariant under the action of the cluster modular group M(G,S), containing the mapping class group of S, the group of outer automorphisms of G, and the product of Weyl / braid groups over punctures / boundary components. We prove that the dual moduli space A(G,S) carries a M(G,S)-equivariant cluster structure, and the pair (A(G,S), P(G,S)) is a cluster ensemble. These results generalize the works of V. Fock & the first author, and of I. Le. We quantize cluster Poisson varieties X for any Planck constant h s.t. h>0 or |h|=1. First, we define a *-algebra structure on the Langlands modular double A(h; X) of the algebra of functions on X. We construct a principal series of representations of the *-algebra A(h; X), equivariant under a unitary projective representation of the cluster modular group M(X). This extends works of V. Fock and the first author when h>0. Combining this, we get a M(G,S)-equivariant quantization of the moduli space P(G,S), given by the *-algebra A(h; P(G,S)) and its principal series representations. We construct realizations of the principal series *-representations. In particular, when S is punctured disc with two special points, we get a principal series *-representations of the Langlands modular double of the quantum group Uq(g). We conjecture that there is a nondegenerate pairing between the local system of coinvariants of oscillatory representations of the W-algebra and the one provided by the projective representation of the mapping class group of S.

Quantum unique ergodicity for magnetic Laplacians on T^2

Abstract:Given a smooth integral two-form and a smooth potential on the flat torus of dimension 2, we study the high energy properties of the corresponding magnetic Schrödinger operator. Under a geometric condition on the magnetic field, we show that every sequence of high energy eigenfunctions satisfies the quantum unique ergodicity property even if the Liouville measure is not ergodic for the underlying classical flow (the Euclidean geodesic flow on the 2-torus).

Abstract:In the semi-classical limit, the non-ergodicity of the eigenstates, θk(j), of circular unitary ensemble (CUE) are investigated. To study statistically the non-ergodicity of the eigenstates ofaquantumsystem, a pair of statistical functions,ΦN(j)=∑N-1k=0|θk(j)|4 and ΨN(j)=∑N-1k=0|θk(j)|2, are defined to show the scars and anti-scars respectively. In the frame of Random Matrix Theory,ΦN(j)s and ΨN(j)s for random orthohormal unit vectors are calculated. It is shown that their averages and fluctuations will tend to zero with the increase of N,while they follow the scaling laws. Compared with ΦN(j)s and ΨN(j)s obtained from the eigenstates of the quantum baker's transformation, it is found that, with the presence of scars (or antiscars), the fluctuations of the statistical functions of the eigenstates of the quantum baker's transformation will be greater than those of the random matrices, and tend to zero much slower in the semi-classical limit of N→∞.
