Abstract:The development of economical, robust and high active non-precious metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts to replace the precious metal is extremely crucial for the widespread applications of metal-air batteries. Herein, a method of modification by polyethyleneimine (PEI) is reported to fabricate Fe-doped three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon materials (defined as cal-FeZIF-NSC). Benefiting from the special N, S-codoped 3D interconnected structure with high conductivity, which enhances the accessibility of active sites by "exhaling/inhaling" reactants and products, and the Fe doping after PEI modification, the newly prepared cal-FeZIF-NSC catalyst exhibits a remarkable ORR catalytic activity in alkaline electrolytes with high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.8V (approaching that of Pt/C) and good stability (only 28 mV decline of E1/2 after the 10000 cycles). As a proof of concept, the further assembled primary Zn-air battery using cal-FeZIF-NSC-0.2 as air cathodes exhibits a large specific capacity of 744 mA h g-1 and a long-term cycling stability (165 cycles/55 h), superior to those of commercial Pt/C-RuO2 catalysts, demonstrating a considerable application potential of the catalyst. This simple synthesis strategy may provide a new way of thinking to fabricate Fe-doped catalysts for energy storage and conversion applications.
