Abstract:An arch under an in-plane central concentrated radial load is subjected to combined axial compressive and bending actions. When these combined axial compressive and bending actions reach a certain value, the arch may suddenly deflect laterally and twist out of its plane of loading and fail in a lateral–torsional buckling mode. This paper derives analytical solutions for the elastic lateral–torsional buckling load of pin-ended circular arches that are subjected to a central concentrated load, using the principle of stationary potential energy in conjunction with the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Analytical solutions of the buckling load for in-plane fixed and out-of-plane pin-ended arches and for the case of the load acting above or below the shear centre are also derived. The analytical solutions are compared with results of a commercial finite element package ANSYS and a finite element code developed by authors elsewhere for arches with different slendernesses, included angles, and cross-sections. The agreement between the analytical solutions and the finite element results is very good.
Topology optimization and numerical analysis on passive zone reinforcement of foundation pit by arch layout

Abstract:The layout forms of solid-web and lattice reinforcement are usually adopted in the reinforcement for the passive zone of foundation pit, while the feasibility of arch layout, a new type of reinforcement form, needs to be verified. We fist apply ANSYS software to conduct topology optimization to the reinforcement form, and the result shows that the arch reinforcement is the optimal form. Furthermore, 2D finite element simulation analysis shows that arch structure can save more materials than lattice form under the same pile deformation. Based on a practical case, the simulation and monitoring results confirmed that the multi-arch structure can significantly reduce the construction material for same pile deformation compared with traditional forms, which provides theoretical and practical guidance for arch reinforcement in passive zone of foundation pit.
Optimal Design of Triangular Arches Against Buckling

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the optimal design of triangular arches of a given volume of material for maximum buckling capacity. The buckling criteria of triangular arches are derived analytically by using stability functions. Optimal designs of triangular arches with various vertical load positions, base support conditions, and apical joint conditions are obtained based on an optimization procedure involving two decision variables (arch height h and cross-sectional area ratio AA/AB). Based on the optimization results, design recommendations for triangular arches against buckling are (1) the optimal height for triangular arches be taken as L/4 where L is the span length of the arch, and (2) both members of the triangular arch are to take on the same cross-sectional area (i.e., AA/AB=1) when the arch has a rigid joint at the apical point, whereas the cross-sectional area ratio AA/AB should be determined based on the optimality condition that both members should buckle at the same time when the arch has a hinge joint. By changing the base support condition from pinned-pinned to fixed-fixed, the maximum buckling load of the optimal triangular arches is increased by about 2.05 times.

Abstract:An arch is often connected with other structures that provide elastic restraints to the arch. These elastic restraints significantly influence its behavior. Analytical solutions of arches with horizontal spring supports carrying vertical concentrated load at mid-span are obtained. By analyzing the linear analytical solutions and introducing a flexibility factor, an analytical formula and a simple approximate expression for the mid-span axial force and displacement of supports are proposed. Criteria that classifies arches and arched beams are suggested. The effects of the stiffness of the horizontal end restraints on the in-plane buckling mode and buckling load of arch are studied. A limited flexibility factor that distinguishes between in-plane anti-symmetric bifurcation mode and symmetric snap-through mode is presented, and formula for buckling mid-span axial forces is proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents the optimal designs of pinned supported funicular arches under equally spaced point loads for maximum in-plane buckling load. Under such loading conditions, the funicular arch shapes comprise straight arch members between the point loads, that is, following the shape of the bending moment diagram of an equivalent simply supported beam under the same loading condition. Two classes of funicular arch optimization problems are considered herein. The first class of funicular arches imposes a constraint on the cross-sectional area to be uniform throughout the entire arch length. The second class of funicular arches allows the cross-sectional area to be different from one straight arch member to another member. To facilitate the buckling analysis, the Hencky bar-chain model (HBM) is adopted. This discrete structural model simplifies the optimization process as the decision variables are the HBM rotational spring stiffnesses that define the cross-sectional areas and the horizontal force that controls the arch shape. Presented herein are new optimal funicular arch shapes under various numbers of equally spaced point loads. By increasing the number of point loads, the optimal solution approaches the solution of a parabolic arch under a uniformly distributed load.

Abstract:Shear deformations affect the stability of arches. This paper investigates the in-plane elastic-plastic stability and design of pin-ended circular arches including shear deformations. The elastic buckling axial forces for symmetric and anti-symmetric buckling are first studied for radially compressed arches and arches uniformly loaded along the horizontal projection, formulas are proposed so that they are used to compute the normalized slenderness and the moment amplification factors respectively. The strength reduction factors of axially compressive arches are studied during which the effect of accompanying bending moments has been excluded, a formula for the strength reduction factors (SRF) of arches with uniform axial forces are proposed. This study verified that the effect of shear deformation can be fully included by the normalized slenderness. The SRF is also modified to make it applicable for real arches where axial forces are always varied along the arch centroid line. Then the moment amplification factor of arches subjected to uniformly distributed loads along the horizontal projection, are derived theoretically and validated by FE predictions. Finally, based on the modified SRF and the moment amplification factor, an interactive axial force-bending moment stability design equation is developed, which considers the effect of shear deformations and provides excellent predictions for the in-plane strength of shear-deformable pin-ended circular arches in bending and compression.

Abstract:This paper presents analytical study of a non-uniform shallow arch under a central concentrated load. The non uniformity is characterized by three constant stiffness regions. The least potential energy principle is used to obtain the equilibrium equations. The anti-symmetric buckling axial compression and buckling modes are shown to be identical with those of Euler-Bernoulli beam. The initial imperfection effect is also investigated theoretically and a parametric study on the different geometric parameters has been carried out on the snap-through symmetric buckling load and anti -symmetric buckling load. The comparison against the finite element analysis shows the accuracy of the theoretical model. We show that the stiffer center case is always economically better than the stiffer end case. The two limiting cases with largest degree of non-uniformity are analytically analyzed by using the augmented potential energy with the Lagrangian multiplier. The closed-form condition for the occurrence of symmetric snap-through buckling is presented for one limiting case. This paper serves to enhance the understanding of the effect of the non-uniformity of shallow arch on its load carrying capacity. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Twin arch bridges are often designed with a bracing member system that can significantly enhance the out-ofplane stability. This study presents an exact matrix stiffness method (MSM) for the out-of-plane buckling analysis of funicular twin arch bridges and investigates the optimal bracing system design. A novel 14 x 14 s-order element stiffness matrix of three-dimensional beam-columns was used in the MSM and the out-of-plane buckling analysis was performed after assembling the exact global structural stability stiffness matrix. The influences of the bracing location, number, length, and flexural rigidity of both the transverse bracing and X-bracing systems on the buckling capacity of the twin arch system were investigated. The in-plane stiffness of the bracing system (i.e., the horizontal flexural rigidity in a transverse bracing system) was found to be the critical factor in suppressing the out-of-plane buckling of the twin arch system. In addition, the twin arch system achieved the maximum out-of-plane buckling capacity with the bracing location at S/4, where S is the total arc length. For optimal bracing system design of funicular twin arches, it is recommended that one uses the more economical Xbracing system or a transverse bracing system with adequately rigid bracing members.

Abstract:An optimization method is introduced to the adjustment of the arch line-shape for long spans arch bridge. The method of FEM analysis combined with optimization is applied to the inverse calculation of the cable forces. Designated as design parameters, the cable forces are acquired by minimizing the square sum of the altitude deviation of all altitude-controlled nodes. The first order optimization method is employed. Based on the FEM program-ANSYS, the method is implemented to adjust the line-shape of a CFST- arch bridge before folding. The result of optimization of the cable forces shows that this method is successful and effective.

Abstract:A new theory for the buckling and nonlinear analysis of circular arches with shear deformation is developed, the theory is based on the variational principle in which the nonlinear strain energy of all stress components are included. For arches subjected to a uniform constant-directed radial load, internal forces and deformations including shear deformation are determined, then the buckling of arches only considering uniform axial forces and incorporating the effect of pre-buckling deformations and all internal forces are respectively carried out, with the results of the latter are fully validated by FE predictions, thus the proposed theory is verified. The buckling of arches with shear deformation is then viewed as an interactive buckling between flexural and shear buckling, Simplified formulas for the critical loads and the critical axial forces of arches for 4 types of loads are presented, the comparison shows excellent agreement between the proposed formulas and FE analysis.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the stability of thin-walled circular arches subjected to a radially-directed concentrated load at the crown point under a temperature increase up to 800? induced by fire. A solution is obtained analytically to predict the critical buckling load of the elastic arch based on the principle of minimum potential energy and an admissible displacement function. Subsequently, a planar numerical model is introduced to explore the maximum load (critical buckling load) by drawing the normalized load-displacement equilibrium curves. These curves from the numerical results exhibit close trends with the analytical ones for both fixed-fixed and pinned pinned arches. In addition, steel arches with inelastic material properties and geometric nonlinearities are considered in the numerical model, indicating that inelastic properties reduce prominently the maximum load. Furthermore, all investigations show the heating process induced by the fire reduces the load capacity (maximum load) dramatically for both elastic and inelastic arches. Finally, parametric analyses are performed to examine the effect of central angle and normalized thickness on the maximum load of the arch.

Abstract:Large discrepancies exist among current classical theories for the in-plane buckling of arches that are subjected to a constant-directed radial load uniformly distributed around the arch axis. Discrepancies also exist between the classical solutions and nonlinear finite-element results. A new theory is developed in this paper for the nonlinear analysis of circular arches in which the nonlinear strain-displacement relationship is based on finite displacement theory. In the resulting variational equilibrium equation, the energy terms due to both nonlinear shear and transverse stresses are included. This paper also derives a set of linearized equations for the elastic in-plane buckling of arches, and presents a detailed analysis of the buckling of deep circular arches under constant-directed uniform radial loading including the effects of shear and transverse stresses, and of the prebuckling deformations. The solutions of the new theory agree very well with nonlinear finite-element results. Various assumptions often used by other researchers, in particular the assumption of inextensibility of the arch axis, are examined. The discrepancies among the current theories are clarified in the paper.

Abstract:Arches supported by other structural members can be considered to be supported elastically at both ends by horizontal springs. An elasto-plastic finite element model is established to study the in-plane ultimate strength and stability of steel circular arches with horizontal spring supports using large deformation theory by ANSYS. Initial geometric crookedness, residual stress and material inelasticity are considered in the investigation. The effects of the stiffness of the horizontal end restraints on the bearing capacity of arches with 1-sections subjected to different load cases are studied. Based on the numerical results, formulas for displacement of supports under ultimate strength in terms of the stiffness of ends are proposed. The design equations for pin-ended arches proposed by other researches are used for elastically supported arches, and a simplified design criterion is presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple methodology for determining the optimal design of an elastic funicular arch under point loads and selfweight for maximum in-plane buckling capacity. This class of optimization problem has hitherto not been investigated. The cross-section of the arch is assumed to be geometrically similar and constant through its entire length. The arch is assumed to be inextensible. The supporting points of the arch may be either pinned or fixed. The methodology for determining the optimal arch shape involves first finding the funicular shape of the arch under point loads and selfweight. Next, the arch is modelled by the Hencky bar chain model (HBM) for the buckling analysis. The HBM is adopted because it eliminates the requirement for formulating the governing equation for buckling and it is a straightforward model to comprehend and implement in a computer code. Each funicular arch shape is specified by a horizontal force value, and it has to be optimally selected to maximise the buckling capacity of the arch. As it is a single parameter optimization problem, the Golden Section search was used to determine the optimal horizontal force, and hence the optimal funicular arch shape. The methodology is illustrated by solving two example problems: (1) an arch under a point load and selfweight and (2) a symmetric arch under two equal point loads and selfweight. By solving the self-buckling problem of a catenary arch, the maximum spanning capacity of the catenary arch can be obtained as shown herein.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the design of bracing systems for three-ribbed parabolic arch bridges against out-ofplane buckling. Typical bracing systems for the three-ribbed arch bridges include K-bracing system and X-bracing system as well as transverse bracing system. The buckling criterion of the braced funicular three-ribbed arch bridge is derived from an exact matrix stiffness method (MSM) with a 14 x 14 s-order element stiffness matrix of three-dimensional beam-column elements that allows for torsional and warping deformations. The lateral torsional buckling load and mode are given by the lowest eigenvalue and eigenvector associated with the assembled structural stability stiffness matrix. A comparison study between different bracing system configurations suggests that the three-ribbed arches with the integral K- or X-bracing system (a K/X-bracing across the three arch ribs) have lower lateral torsional buckling loads than their arch counterparts with the independent Kor X-bracing system (the adjacent arch ribs are connected by K/X-bracing respectively), because the latter ones could provide more restraint on the middle arch rib to avoid early lateral torsional instability. Further, a bracing utilization efficiency index (defined as the normalized buckling capacity over material usage for bracing system) is proposed to quantify the effect of bracing systems in improving the lateral torsional buckling capacity of arch bridges. Highly efficient bracing systems that maximize the lateral torsional buckling load of three-ribbed arch structures with the lowest bracing material usage are then recommended.

Abstract:The flexural-torsional buckling of arches has been investigated theoretically by a number of authors.But most papers are restricted to double- symmetric cross- sections.Starting from warping displacement for arbitrary thin- walled curved beams in Ref.[1],the principle of energy is applied to derive the differential equation of stability for mono- symmetric I- section arches.Rigorous solutions are obtained for arches subjected to uniformly distributed radial load as well as to equal and opposite end moments.Effects of different laying positions and of asymmetry of cross-section on buckling loads are included.The solutions are compared with previous theoretical results.

Abstract:The collapse behavior of a non-uniform circular shallow arch is analytically studied for both fixed-fixed and pinned-pinned boundary conditions. The non-uniformity is characterized by three piecewise constant stiffness regions. The equilibrium equations are derived based on the least potential energy principle and the resulting solutions are presented by proper non-dimensionalization in a form independent of total length of the whole arch by identifying two modified slenderness parameters. Detailed parametric study of both stiffer center case and stiffer end case has been conducted to investigate the influence of various geometric parameters and distinctly different collapse behaviors are found for different boundary conditions. Some criteria are derived to identify the snap through buckling. Moreover two limiting cases of extreme non-uniformity(rigid end case and rigid center case) are studied via the augmented potential energy with introduced Lagrangian multipliers. Through an asymptotical analysis, a finite modified slenderness parameter is shown to suffice to ensure the occurrence of snap-through buckling for rigid end case with pinned boundary conditions when the dimension of center region is approaching to zero. It is shown rigorously that the same conclusion holds even when there is some rotational restraint at the pinned ends. For rigid center case, closed-formed criteria are derived for snap-through buckling. Finally analysis has been carried out on the case where one part of the arch has large bending rigidity but moderate stretching rigidity. This paper aims to enhance the understanding of collapse behavior of non-uniform shallow arch under a central concentrated load for various boundary conditions. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Analytical investigation of collapse of a pinned non-uniform shallow circular arch under uniform radial pressure is presented in this paper. The non-uniformity is introduced by dividing the arch into three regions of constant stiffness. The equilibrium equations are obtained by using least potential energy principle. By proper non-dimensionalization, the presented solution is independent of total length of the arch. And two modified slenderness parameters are identified which enables the result to be valid for any symmetric cross-section shape. Parametric study on different geometric parameters has been carried out on the snap-through buckling load and anti-symmetric bifurcation load. The validity of the analytical result is verified by comparison with FEA results. Criteria concerning four deformation modes are identified. We show there is an equal potential energy load for some non-uniform shallow arches by a straightforward deduction, the existence of which load is a necessary condition for the buckle propagation of a corresponding long shallow panel. Finally two limiting cases (rigid center case and rigid end case) with extreme non-uniformity are analytically studied by using augmented potential energy with Lagrangian multipliers. For rigid center case, closed-form condition for the possible occurrence of symmetric snap-through is presented. For rigid end case, an asymptotical analysis leads to a somewhat surprising critical value of slenderness which makes the snap-through buckling just possible. This paper intends to improve the understanding of the effect of non-uniformity on collapse of shallow arch under radial uniform pressure.

Abstract:The in-plane elastic buckling behavior of arches is investigated using a new finite-element approach for the nonlinear analysis. The linear buckling, nonlinear primary buckling, and secondary bifurcation buckling behavior of arches are compared taking into account the large deformation and the effects of initial geometric imperfections or perturbations. The theoretical investigation emphasizes the nonlinear secondary bifurcation buckling behavior for a full span uniformly distributed load. The efficiency of compact method for tracing secondary buckling path is shown through several examples. Finally, a new structural design, which prevents the secondary bifurcation buckling by adding some crossed cables across the arch, is proposed to improve the limit load carrying capacity.
