Abstract:The Halton sequence is a well-known multi-dimensional low-discrepancy sequence. In this paper, we propose a new method for randomizing the Halton sequence. This randomization makes use of the description of Halton sequence using the von Neumann-Kakutani transformation. We randomize the starting point of the sequence. This method combines the potential accuracy advantage of Halton sequence in multi-dimensional integration with the practical error estimation advantage of Monte Carlo methods. Theoretically, using multiple randomized Halton sequences as a variance reduction technique we can obtain an efficiency improvement over standard Monte Carlo. Numerical results show that randomized Halton sequences have better performance not only than Monte Carlo, but also than randomly shifted Halton sequences. They have similar performance with the randomly digit-scrambled Halton sequences but require much less generating time.
Quasigroup String Transformations and Hash Function Design

Abstract:In this paper we propose two new types of compression functions, based on quasigroup string transformations. The first type uses known quasigroup string transformations, defined elsewhere, by changing alternately the transformation direction, going forward and backward through the string. Security of this design depends of the chosen quasigroup string transformation, the order of the quasigroup and the properties satisfied by the quasigroup operations. We illustrate how this type of compression function is applied in the design of the cryptographic hash function NaSHA. The second type of compression function uses new generic quasigroup string transformation, which combine two orthogonal quasigroup operations into a single one. This, in fact, is deployment of the concept of multipermutation for perfect generation of confusion and diffusion. One implementation of this transformation is by extended Feistel network FA,B,C which has at least two orthogonal mates as orthomorphisms: its inverse $$F^{-1}_{A,B,C}$$ and its square $$F^{2}_{A,B,C}$$.

Abstract:This paper presents a class of random orthogonal sequences associated with the number theoretic Hilbert transform. We present a constructive procedure for finding the random sequences for different modulus values. These random sequences have autocorrelation function that is zero everywhere excepting at the origin. These sequences may be used as keys and in other cryptography applications.

Abstract:This paper aims to introduce a more general definition of quasirandom groups and generalize several well-known results in the literature in this new setting. More precisely, let $G$ be a semi-direct product of groups and $X\subseteq G$, we provide conditions such that one can find tuples $(x_0, \ldots, x_k)\in X^{k+1}$ satisfying $x_1x_2\ldots x_k=x_0$ or conditions to guarantee that the product set $XX$ grows exponentially. In a special case of the group of rigid-motions in the plane over an arbitrary finite field, our results offer a reasonably complete description of structures of this group.

Abstract:Cryptographic random number generation is critical for any quantum safe encryption. Based on the natural uncertainty of some quantum processes, variety of quantum random number generators or QRNGs have been created with physical quantum processes. They generally generate random numbers with good unpredictable randomness. Of course, physical QRNGs are costic and require physical integrations with computing systems. This paper proposes a pseudo quantum random number generator with a quantum algorithm called quantum permutation pad or QPP, leveraging the high entropy of quantum permutation space its bijective transformation. Unlike the Boolean algebra where the size of information space is 2n for an n-bit system, an n-bit quantum permutation space consists of 2n! quantum permutation matrices, representing all quantum permutation gates over an n-bit computational basis. This permutation space holds an equivalent Shannon information entropy log_2(2^n!). A QPP can be used to create a pseudo QRNG or pQRNG capable integrated with any classical computing system or directly with any application for good quality deterministic random number generation. Using a QPP pad with 64 8-bit permuation matrices, pQRNG holds 107,776 bits of entropy for the pseudo random number generation, comparing with 4096 bits of entropy in Linux /dev/random. It can be used as a deterministic PRNG or entropy booster of other PRNGs. It can also be used as a whitening algorithm for any hardware random number generator including QRNG without discarding physical bias bits.

Abstract:We study an efficient algorithm to hash any single-qubit gate into a braid of Fibonacci anyons represented by a product of icosahedral group elements. By representing the group elements by braid segments of different lengths, we introduce a series of pseudogroups. Joining these braid segments in a renormalization group fashion, we obtain a Gaussian unitary ensemble of random-matrix representations of braids. With braids of length O(log2(1/epsilon)), we can approximate all SU(2) matrices to an average error epsilon with a cost of O(log(1/epsilon)) in time. The algorithm is applicable to generic quantum compiling.

Abstract:Many random functions, like Hash, MAC, PRG, have been used in various network applications for different security choices. However, they are either fast but insecure or cryptographic secure but slow. To integrate them together, in this paper we present a new family of square random functions, including SqHash, SqMAC and SqPRG, based on a specially truncated function (MSB or LSB), as well as circular convolution with carry bits. Provable security is provided by the privacy property in hidden number problem and Hard-core unpredication of one-way function. The experiment results show that these schemes have better performance under different input and output lengths. We also perform four types of statistical tests for randomness. The experiments indicate that our construction has good average-case randomness than SHA-2 and original Square algorithm.

Abstract:Random number generators (RNG) are an important resource in many areas: cryptography (both quantum and classical), probabilistic computation (Monte Carlo methods), numerical simulations, industrial testing and labeling, hazard games, scientific research, etc. Because today's computers are deterministic, they can not create random numbers unless complemented with a RNG. Randomness of a RNG can be precisely, scientifically characterized and measured. Especially valuable is the information-theoretic provable RNG (True RNG - TRNG) which, at state of the art, seem to be possible only by use of physical randomness inherent to certain (simple) quantum systems. On the other hand, current industry standard dictates use of RNG's based on free running oscillators (FRO) whose randomness is derived from electronics noise present in logic circuits and which cannot be strictly proven. This approach is currently used in 3-rd and 4-th generation FPGA and ASIC hardware, unsuitable for realization of quantum TRNG. We compare weak and strong aspects of the two approaches and discuss possibility of building quantum TRNG in the recently appeared Mixed Signal FPGA technology. Finally, we discuss several examples where use of a TRNG is critical and show how it can significantly improve security of cryptographic systems.

Abstract:One of the key requirement of many schemes is that of random numbers. Sequence of random numbers are used at several stages of a standard cryptographic protocol. A simple example is of a Vernam cipher, where a string of random numbers is added to massage string to generate the encrypted code. It is represented as $C=M \oplus K $ where $M$ is the message, $K$ is the key and $C$ is the ciphertext. It has been mathematically shown that this simple scheme is unbreakable is key K as long as M and is used only once. For a good cryptosystem, the security of the cryptosystem is not be based on keeping the algorithm secret but solely on keeping the key secret. The quality and unpredictability of secret data is critical to securing communication by modern cryptographic techniques. Generation of such data for cryptographic purposes typically requires an unpredictable physical source of random data. In this manuscript, we present studies of three different methods for producing random number. We have tested them by studying its frequency, correlation as well as using the test suit from NIST.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for generating random elements of a finite group given a set of generators of that. Our method draws upon combinatorial group theory and automata theory to achieve this objective. Furthermore, we explore the application of this method in generating random elements of a particularly significant group, namely the symmetric group (or group of permutations on a set). Through rigorous analysis, we demonstrate that our proposed method requires fewer average swaps to generate permutations compared to existing approaches. However, recognizing the need for practical applications, we propose a hardware-based implementation based on our theoretical approach, and provide a comprehensive comparison with previous methods. Our evaluation reveals that our method outperforms existing approaches in certain scenarios. Although our primary proposed method only aims to speed up the shuffling and does not decrease its time complexity, we also extend our method to improve the time complexity.

A Programmable True Random Number Generator Using Commercial Quantum Computers

Abstract:Random number generators (RNG) are essential elements in many cryptographic systems. True random number generators (TRNG) rely upon sources of randomness from natural processes such as those arising from quantum mechanics phenomena. We demonstrate that a quantum computer can serve as a high-quality, weakly random source for a generalized user-defined probability mass function (PMF). Specifically, QC measurement implements the process of variate sampling according to a user-specified PMF resulting in a word comprised of electronic bits that can then be processed by an extractor function to address inaccuracies due to non-ideal quantum gate operations and other system biases. We introduce an automated and flexible method for implementing a TRNG as a programmed quantum circuit that executes on commercially-available, gate-model quantum computers. The user specifies the desired word size as the number of qubits and a definition of the desired PMF. Based upon the user specification of the PMF, our compilation tool automatically synthesizes the desired TRNG as a structural OpenQASM file containing native gate operations that are optimized to reduce the circuit's quantum depth. The resulting TRNG provides multiple bits of randomness for each execution/measurement cycle; thus, the number of random bits produced in each execution is limited only by the size of the QC. We provide experimental results to illustrate the viability of this approach.

A Comprehensive Review of Quantum Random Number Generators: Concepts, Classification and the Origin of Randomness

Abstract:Random numbers are central to cryptography and various other tasks. The intrinsic probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics has allowed us to construct a large number of quantum random number generators (QRNGs) that are distinct from the traditional true number generators. This article provides a review of the existing QRNGs with a focus on their various possible features (e.g., device independence, semi-device independence) that are not achievable in the classical world. It also discusses the origin, applicability, and other facets of randomness. Specifically, the origin of randomness is explored from the perspective of a set of hierarchical axioms for quantum mechanics, implying that succeeding axioms can be regarded as a superstructure constructed on top of a structure built by the preceding axioms. The axioms considered are: (Q1) incompatibility and uncertainty; (Q2) contextuality; (Q3) entanglement; (Q4) nonlocality and (Q5) indistinguishability of identical particles. Relevant toy generalized probability theories (GPTs) are introduced, and it is shown that the origin of random numbers in different types of QRNGs known today are associated with different layers of nonclassical theories and all of them do not require all the features of quantum mechanics. Further, classification of the available QRNGs has been done and the technological challenges associated with each class are critically analyzed. Commercially available QRNGs are also compared.

Quantum Pseudorandom Scramblers

Abstract:Quantum pseudorandom state generators (PRSGs) have stimulated exciting developments in recent years. A PRSG, on a fixed initial (e.g., all-zero) state, produces an output state that is computationally indistinguishable from a Haar random state. However, pseudorandomness of the output state is not guaranteed on other initial states. In fact, known PRSG constructions provably fail on some initial states. In this work, we propose and construct quantum Pseudorandom State Scramblers (PRSSs), which can produce a pseudorandom state on an arbitrary initial state. In the information-theoretical setting, we obtain a scrambler which maps an arbitrary initial state to a distribution of quantum states that is close to Haar random in total variation distance. As a result, our scrambler exhibits a dispersing property. Loosely, it can span an $\epsilon$-net of the state space. This significantly strengthens what standard PRSGs can induce, as they may only concentrate on a small region of the state space provided that average output state approximates a Haar random state. Our PRSS construction develops a parallel extension of the famous Kac's walk, and we show that it mixes exponentially faster than the standard Kac's walk. This constitutes the core of our proof. We also describe a few applications of PRSSs. While our PRSS construction assumes a post-quantum one-way function, PRSSs are potentially a weaker primitive and can be separated from one-way functions in a relativized world similar to standard PRSGs.

Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution(QKD) thrives to achieve perfect secrecy of One time Pad (OTP) through quantum processes. One of the crucial components of QKD are Quantum Random Number Generators(QRNG) for generation of keys. Unfortunately, these QRNG does not immediately produce usable bits rather it produces raw bits with high entropy but low uniformity which can be hardly used by any cryptographic system. A lot of pre-processing is required before the random numbers generated by QRNG to be usable. This causes a bottle neck in random number generation rate as well as QKD system relying on it. To avoid this lacuna of post-processing methods employed as a central part of Quantum Random Number Generators alternative approaches that satisfy the entropy(non determinism) and quantum security is explored. Pseudorandom generators based on quantum secure primitives could be an alternative to the post-processing problem as PRNGs are way more faster than any random number generator employing physical randomness (quantum mechanical process in QRNG) as well as it can provide uniform bits required for cryptography application. In this work we propose a pseudorandom generator based on post quantum primitives. The central theme of this random number generator is designing PRNG with non deterministic entropy generated through hard lattice problem - Learning with errors. We leverage the non determinism by Gaussian errors of LWE to construct non-deterministic PRNG satisfying the entropy requirement of QKD. Further, the paper concludes by evaluating the PRNG through Die-Harder Test.

Abstract:Martin-Lof's definition of random sequences of cbits as those not belonging to any set of constructive zero Lebesgue measure is reformulated in the language of Algebraic Probability Theory. The adoption of the Pour-El Richards theory of computability structures on Banach spaces allows us to give a natural noncommutative extension of Martin-Lof's definition, characterizing the random elements of a chain Von Neumann algebra. In the particular case of the minimally informative noncommutative alphabet our definition reduces to the definition of a random sequence of qubits.

Abstract:A combinatorial object is said to be quasirandom if it exhibits certain properties that are typically seen in a truly random object of the same kind. It is known that a permutation is quasirandom if and only if the pattern density of each of the twenty-four 4-point permutations is close to 1/24, which is its expected value in a random permutation. In other words, the set of all twenty-four 4-point permutations is quasirandom-forcing. Moreover, it is known that there exist sets of eight 4-point permutations that are also quasirandom-forcing. Breaking the barrier of linear dependency of perturbation gradients, we show that every quasirandom-forcing set of 4-point permutations must have cardinality at least five.

Quantum Random Number Generation with Partial Source Assumptions

Abstract:Quantum random number generator harnesses the power of quantum mechanics to generate true random numbers, making it valuable for various scientific applications. However, real-world devices often suffer from imperfections that can undermine the integrity and privacy of generated randomness. To combat this issue, we present a novel quantum random number generator and experimentally demonstrate it. Our approach circumvents the need for exhaustive characterization of measurement devices, even in the presence of a quantum side channel. Additionally, we also do not require detailed characterization of the source, relying instead on reasonable assumptions about encoding dimension and noise constraints. Leveraging commercially available all-fiber devices, we achieve a randomness generation rate of 40 kbps.

Abstract:Quantum random number generation (QRNG) is a resource that is a necessity in the field of cryptography. However, its certification has been challenging. In this article, we certify randomness with the aid of quantum entanglement in a device independent setting, where we choose two-photon interference for source characterisation. The CHSH inequality violation and quantum state tomography are used as independent checks on the measurement devices. These measures ensure the unpredictability of quantum random number generation. This work can be easily extended to faster randomness expansion protocols.

Abstract:Quantum random-number generators (QRNGs) can offer a means to generate information-theoretically provable random numbers, in principle. In practice, unfortunately, the quantum randomness is inevitably mixed with classical randomness due to classical noises. To distill this quantum randomness, one needs to quantify the randomness of the source and apply a randomness extractor. Here, we propose a generic framework for evaluating quantum randomness of real-life QRNGs by min-entropy, and apply it to two different existing quantum random-number systems in the literature. Moreover, we provide a guideline of QRNG data postprocessing for which we implement two information-theoretically provable randomness extractors: Toeplitz-hashing extractor and Trevisan's extractor.
