Abstract:The influence of five variables (i.e. deposition temperature, time, bath pH, and concentrations of Cr3+ compound (KCr(SO4)2) and H3PO4) on the preparation of Cr3+ coating on Al 6063 alloy was investigated using AC impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The optimal conditions were determined by AC impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the formation and quality of the coating were very sensitive to the deposition bath pH. A mechanism was proposed to explain the results. A simple model was derived and experimentally tested in terms of an equivalent circuit. Good agreement was found between the model predictions and the experimental results. The morphologies of the coated and uncoated electrodes were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results also support the proposed surface model.

Abstract:Multi-metal tanning agent was prepared using chromium,aluminum and titanium salts and organic ligand LA as raw materials.Constituents and properties of the Cr-Al-Ti tanning agent were studied.The results showed,under the condition of the dosage of LA at 20% of metals ion mol contents and the mol ratio of n(Cr3+)∶n(Al3+)∶n(Ti4+) being 4∶3∶3,the tanning agent could be produced with saving 60% chrome.The absorption rate of chrome reached 90.3%,much higher than 68.24% of normal chrome tanning.The content of chrome in effluent solution was 0.2365 g/l,only 1/7 content of normal chrome tanning.

Abstract:A new analytical method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) using on. line sample pretreatment valve. switching ion chromatography. The organic matrix in leather was removed by using a reverse. phase column as the pretreatment column. Before injection, EDTA was added into sample solution to react with the Cr(III) to form anion which could absorb visible light strongly. After injection, the ions separated by the pretreatment column were received in a collection loop. Then the ions were delivered into an analytical column and separated. Cr(VI) then was derived with the derivatization reagent 1, 5. diphenylcarbazide (DPC), and detected together with Cr(III)-EDTA complex by a UV. Vis detector. Under the optimum conditions, the linear range of the method for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) was 0. 3-10 mg/L (r = 0. 9991) and 0. 05-2 mg/L (r = 0. 9992), whereas detection limits (S/N = 3) were 80. 78. g/L and 6. 67 mu g/L, respectively. The recoveries were in the range of 88. 7% - 108. 5% with the relative standard deviations for retention time and peak area less than 3%. The method could be applied to determine Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in leather and cloth effectively and quickly.

Abstract:A sequential injection procedure for chromium speciation coupled to electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was developed by using a micro-column packed with clinoptilolite zeolite modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide(HDTMAB).A linear range of 0.1~3.0 μg/L for chromium(Ⅵ) was obtained along with a limit of detection of 0.03 μg/L.The precision was derived to be 3.7%(n=5) at 1.0 μg/L Cr(Ⅵ),and an enrichment factor of 5.6 was achieved with a sampling frequency of 16/h.The procedure was applied for the speciation of chromium in a certified reference material of water GBW08608,and the obtained result agreed well with the certified value.Recovery test was performed for a tap water sample,and the results were satisfactory.

Abstract:A method for the direct simultaneous multi-element analysis of solid metal samples by flow-injection on-line electrolytic dissolution and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry was developed and applied to the determination of Zn, Si, Fe, Mn, Cr, Mg and Cu in aluminium alloys. The suitable range for the determination was 10 μg g−1–100 mg g−1. The precision of the entire analysis, including electrolysis and determination, was in the range 1–6%, depending on the element and its concentration in the alloys and on the current density applied in electrolysis. The analysis of a sample can be accomplished in a few minutes.

Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:Capillary zone electrophoresis(CZE) was applied to the separation and determination of chromium(Ⅵ) and chromium(Ⅲ) with formate as background electrolyte.Cr~(3+) was transformed into ~-by using cyclohexane-1,2-diaminetetraacetic acid(CDTA) as complexing reagent.The relative standard deviations of the determinations of migration times(n=9) for ~-and Cr(Ⅵ) were 0.5% and 0.8%,respectively,and those of peak areas for ~-and Cr(Ⅵ) were 4.6 and 3.0,respectively.The detection limits for signal-to-noise ratio of 2 were 0.08 mg/L for ~-and 0.3 mg/L for Cr(Ⅵ).The linear ranges of peak area vs.concentration were 0.15-10 mg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 7 and 0.625-20 mg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.998 6 for ~-and Cr(Ⅵ),respectively.The method is simple and feasible.

Abstract:Fast determination of five fractions of aluminum(total Al T, acid soluble Al r, total monomeric Al a, inorganic monomeric Al i, organic monomeric Al o) in soil solution samples under acidified and alkalized conditions by a.c.adsorptive oscillochronopotemtiometry in the presence of acid chrome dark blue (ACDB) is presented in this paper. The method is based on the different competitive complexation capacities of ACDB and natural organic matter (NOM) at two pHs 4.9 and 8.0. Inorganic monomeric Al was detected at pH 4.9 (0.5?mol·L -1 NH 4Ac HAc 7×10 -4 ?mol·L -1 ACDB), while total monomeric Al is determined at pH8.0 (0.5?mol·L -1 KCl 0.1?mol·L -1 Na 2B 4O 7 6×10 -4 ?mol·L -1 ACDB). The method was successfully employed to determine five Al fractions in more than ten soil solution samples. The results were in agreement with those of Driscoll's speciation method.

Abstract:A method for the determination of aluminium in the powder of Ni-Cr-Al-Y alloy was proposed.After the sample was dissolved with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid,in the buffer solution of hexamethylene tetramine at pH 5-6,the EDTA demasked from aluminium-EDTA complex by adding the solution of [BF 4] -was titrated with copper standard solution,using the mixed indicator of 5-Br-PADAP,emulsifier OP and Tween-80.The interference of coexisting yttrium in the certain range could be eliminated.The content of aluminium could be indirectly calculated.The method was simple and the titration end-point was sharp.The analytical results were very identical with that of ICP-AES.

Abstract:A new method for speciation, preconcentration and separation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in different matrices was developed using solid phase extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Poly-2-(5-methylisoxazole) methacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid-co-divinylbenzene) (MAD), was synthesized and characterized as a new chelating resin for the speciation of Cr(III)/Cr(VI) species. Cr(III) was quantitatively recovered on chelating resin at pH range of 1.5–4.5, while Cr(VI) was not quantitatively recovered in all the pH's. The optimum conditions for the speciation of Cr(III)/Cr(VI) species were investigated on several commonly tested experimental parameters such as pH of the solution, amount of the resin, sample volume, and interfering ions. The preconcentration factor was found to be 200. The limit of detection for Cr(III) corresponding to three times the standard deviation of the blank (3s) was found 0.01μgL−1. Adsorption capacity and binding equilibrium constant were calculated to be 34.3mgg−1 and 1.5Lmg−1, respectively. The method was validated by analysing certified reference materials. The proposed method was applied to the determination and speciation of chromium species in various water and food samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:It is difficult to completely remove Cr(III) from tannery effluent by alkaline precipitation due to the abundance of strong organic ligands. Thereby, the speciation of the residual Cr after alkaline precipitation is of crucial significance to guide the selection and design of further treatment process. For the first time, we revealed the speciation of the residual Cr with the aid of comprehensive analytical techniques. Results showed that the residual Cr(III) mostly located in two size ranges, i.e. the 13-100nm fraction and the <4nm fraction. Combined spectral analyses demonstrated Cr(III) was coordinated by carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups in both fractions, while the complexation by nitrogen-containing groups was excluded by the total nitrogen and UPLC-MS analysis in the two fractions, respectively. Based on the comprehensive analyses, the structures of Cr(III) complexes in both fractions were proposed. Cr(III) cross-linked the carboxyl groups from polyacrylic acid chains to form the network gel structure in the 13-100nm fraction, while the complex structure of Cr(III) in the <4nm fraction was formed through hydroxyl-carboxyl chelation by masking agents such as tartrate and citrate. Although polyoxyethylene ether was abundantly present, it was responsible for the complexation of Cr(III) in neither fraction.
ICP-AES Determination of 5 Chemical Components in Chromium Ores

Abstract:ICP-AES was applied to the determination of Fe,Al,Si,Mg and Ca in chromium ores.The sample was fused with mixed flux of Na_2CO_3,K_2CO_3 and Na_2B_4O_7(2 + 2+1,mass ratio) and the melt was dissolved with dil.nitric acid(15 + 80).An aliquot of the sample solution was taken for ICP-AES analysis.The spectral lines of 393.37 nm,251.61 nm,271.44 nm,396.15 nm and 279.55 nm were selected for determination of Ca,Si,Fe,Al and Mg respectively.National standard samples(BGBW 07201 and GSBD 33001.3) were used for preparation of standard curves.As a check for the feasibility of the present method,3 standard and known samples were analyzed,the results obtained were in consistency with the certified or known values,with values of recovery and RSD's(n=6) in the ranges of 99.0%—101.5% and 0.05%-0.78% respectively.

Abstract:A rapid and simple general complexometric method was presented for the determination of bismuth, titanium and aluminium in laboratory synthesized alloys similar to those of some bauxites, clay, ilmenite, Portland cements and ceramic products. The precision and accuracy attainable in successive titrations of Bi(3+), Ti(4+) and Al(3+) with 0.01 and/or 0.001M solutions of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Na(2)EDTA) and standard ZnCl(2) of the same concentration, using Semi-Xylenol Orange (SXO) as a metallochromic indicator with visual end-point indication were studied. For one aliquot Bi(3+) was at first directly titrated at pH 1-2 (HNO(3)) with Na(2)EDTA using SXO as indicator in the presence of L-ascorbic acid to reduce Fe(3+) to Fe(2+). At the bismuth end-point, an excess of Na(2)EDTA was added, the pH was adjusted with hexamine buffer (pH 5) and the excess of Na(2)EDTA was back-titrated with solution of standard zinc(II) chloride for both the simultaneous and consecutive titrations in the presence of (SXO) as indicator. For the simultaneous titration, fluoride was added to release the Na(2)EDTA combined with both Al(3+) and Ti(4+). For the consecutive titration, phosphate was added to release the Na(2)EDTA combined with Ti(4+) and then fluoride to release the Na(2)EDTA combined with Al(3+). The interference of various anions and cations in the determination of Bi(3+), Ti(4+) and Al(3+) was studied. A comparison of the accuracy of both the simultaneous and consecutive titration was also carried out. The proposed methods were applied successfully to some real samples of bauxites, clay, ilmenite, Portland cements and ceramic products and the results were satisfactory.

Abstract:Cr (III) is an essential element for maintaining glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism in mammals. Removal/recovery of such heavy metals is crucial. For this purpose, dendrimer-based novel magnetic nanoparticles to enrich Cr (III) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods such as SEM-EDX, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, and VSM. The optimum parameters such as pH, eluent type-concentration, adsorbent amount, and time, which are important in the recovery of Cr (III) with solid magnetic-based nanoparticles (MNPs), were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. After the enrichment of Cr (III) with MNPs, the device's detection power enhancements were increased by 8653 ± 145 times. The optimum conditions obtained for Cr (III) ions with MNPs were successfully applied to water, honey, and hardaliye samples. Furthermore, the reusability results of the MNPs were determined to be approximately 99% for Cr (III) up to the 10 th use.

Abstract:Fast furnace program (total furnace time < 45 s) electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometric (ETA-AAS) determinations of total Cr in several clinical materials were carried out in conventional (DABC) and transverse (ZEBC) heated graphite atomizers. Before spectrometric determination, test portions of the samples were diluted at different ratios in appropriate solvents: (a) whole blood (WB), blood plasma (BP), blood serum (BS), and red blood cells (RBC), 1 + 4 in 0.1% (v/v) Triton X-100; (b) urine (U), 1 + 4 in 0.1% (v/v) Triton X-100 + 0.01 mol/L nitric acid; and (c) bone (B) specimens and the certified reference materials after microwave mineralization, 1 + 9 in 0.01 mol/L nitric acid. The refractoriness of Cr allowed pyrolysis at a high temperature (approximately 1650 degrees C). As a consequence, two facts arose: first, isoformation was unnecessary; and second, background correction, independent of use of continuum source (DABC design) or Zeeman effect (ZEBC design) correction, was not required. For these reasons, the fast furnace program ETA-AAS analyses were simply done by automatic injection of 10-microL aliquots of the diluted test portions (or aqueous Cr standards) into either pyrolytic graphite-coated graphite tubes (DABC design; wall atomization performed) or pyrolytic graphite-coated graphite tubes with integrated pyrolytic graphite platforms (ZEBC design; integrated platform atomization performed), using neither analyte isoformation nor background correction; wall atomization in coated tubes was preferred. Under these experimental conditions, the limits of detection (3 sigma, micrograms/L Cr) and the characteristic masses (pg of Cr) were 0.03 and 2.7 (DABC design) and 0.2 and 5.0 (ZEBC design), respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:By using Eriochrome Cyanine R modified anion-exchange resin as solid phase extraction cartridge coupled with ICP-AES, a novel method for the determination of Al fractionation in soil extracts has been developed. The proposed method possesses the following distinct advantages: (1) Good selectivity. The Eriochrome Cyanine R modified resin shows good recognizing ability for Al fractions. The total monomeric Al-a can be adsorbed on the modified resin in the pH range of 6 similar to 10 by column procedure, and the organic monomeric Al. can be determined by batch procedure rapidly while no adsorption of inorganic monomeric Al-i was found in 30 min at least. Thus Ali can be obtained by subtraction between Ala and Al-o. Major matrix's interference (Fe, Mn and organic substances) in soil extracts can be avoided. (2) Simple manipulation. The modified resin is very easy to prepare just simply by impregnating the resin with a solution containing Eriochrome Cyanine R. This method has been applied to the determination of five fractions of Al in soil extracts with the experimental results being in agreement with those obtained by Driscoll's method. In addition, Calcon, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid, Tiron, Solochrome Violet RS, Pyrocatechol Violet, Xylenol orange, Ferron and Alizarin Red S are also modified to anion-exchange resin as solid-phase extractants. Their conditions to pre-concentrate and determine Al fractionation are investigated, and the adsorptive characteristics of various chelating reagents have been discussed and compared.
Determination of Chromium in Environmental Samples by Flame AAS with Flow Injection On-Line Coprecipitation

Abstract:A flow injection on-line coprecipitation flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) system for the determination of Cr was developed to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of chromium determination in environmental samples, Cr(III) was preconcentrated and separated from potential interferents by on-line coprecipitation with Ianthanum hydroxide. The precipitate was collected on the walls of a knotted reactor without filtration, dissolved by 0.5 mol/L HCI at a flow rate of 6 mL/min and introduced into the nebulizer-burner system of the spectrometer. 1,10-phenanthroline and sulphosalicylic acid were added to the sample solution to eliminate interferences from Fe(II), Zn(II), and Al(III), Speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in water samples was achieved by reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III) for the determination of total Cr, and omitting the reduction for Cr(lll) determinations. A concentration efficiency of 22-fold per minute and a detection limit (3 sigma) of 0.8 mu g/L mere achieved for a 110-s loading time. The relative standard deviation (n=11) was 2.7% at the 50-mu g/L chromium level. The analytical results obtained for human hair and water standard reference materials were in good agreement with the certified values.

Abstract:It based on that diphenylcarbzide(DPC)can be oxidized by chromium(Ⅵ)to amaranthine diphenylcarbazone,which can react with chromium(Ⅲ)to form a claret cation coordination compound,i.e.chromium(Ⅲ)-diphenylcarbazone in acid medium.This coordination compound can exchange with the cation on the surface active sites of model 732 cation exchange resin,so a R--Cr(Ⅲ)-diphenylcarbazone ternary associative system is produced,and chromium(Ⅵ)is determined by thin resin phase spectrophotometry.Chromium(Ⅲ)is oxidized to chromium(Ⅵ)by potassium permanganate completely.Total chromium is determined by the same method and then chromium(Ⅲ)can be calculated by minus.Due to the selectivity of coordination compound and ion exchange of resin,the method has good selectivity(besides of Fe 3+,most other co-existing ions didn't interfere in the determination).It has a apparent molar absorptivity of 4.4×105 L·mol-1·cm-1,which is 11 times higher than water phase spectrophotometry.The linear range is in the range of 0-4.0 μg/mL,and the detection limit is 0.012 μg/L.The relative standard deviation is 2.3% for the determination of 5.0 μg Cr(Ⅵ))(n=6).The method has been applied to the analysis of chromium in industrial waste water and natural water with recovery of 97.0%-101.0%.

Abstract:Speciation of bio-available chromium in soils was performed using extraction with 0.05M EDTA followed by strong anionic solid-phase extraction. The step gradient elution technique with 0.1 and 0.5M NaCl as eluent in sequence was sufficient to separate Cr(III) and Cr(VI) with recoveries of 99.7 and 93.4%, respectively. During the determination of separated chromium species by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS), 10% ammonium nitrate solution was co-injected with the sample to eliminate the interferences from the eluent matrix containing high concentrations of chloride. Linear calibration curves over the range of 0–15ngmL−1 were obtained with good correlation coefficients (R2=0.9976 for Cr(III)EDTA−, and 0.9897 for Cr(VI)). The sum of the chromium species determined after separation was in good agreement with total chromium from EDTA extraction of NIST soil standard SRM2709 (0.688μgg−1 Cr(III), 0.127μgg−1 Cr(VI), 0.742μgg−1 total Cr) and a local soil sample (0.030μgg−1 Cr(III), 0μgg−1 Cr(VI), 0.053μgg−1 total Cr).

Abstract:Al-Ferron timed spectrophotometry assay is a basic method in the study on the formation of polynuclear hydroxyl aluminum species and their transformation laws in aqueous systems. In actual working process, this methodology has some dogmatism and arbitrariness in the time limits demarcation of the three kinds of aluminum fractions (Al(a), Al(b) and Al(c)) in polynuclear aluminum solutions, which makes this kind of classification rougher, and the experimental results non-reproducible. The reason for this difference is that the specific species within Al(a), Al(b) and Al(c) have different reaction mechanism and dynamics, and that specific species of Al(b) having different OH/Al ratios have different reaction rates with ferron. In this paper, the ExpAssoc distribution was applied to quantitatively fit the Al-Ferron reaction dynamics curve, and the extrapolation method was used to survey the 1 min measured value [Al(a)] of monomeric Al, which is hard to obtain in manual manipulation. The time demarcation between Al(b) and Al(c) should reach the point of the experimental data curve up to horizontal platform. The microwave-radiated technology was used to fast assay the total aluminum concentration [Al(T)]. With these methods, the contents of monomeric Al(a), polynuclear Al(b) and gel Al(c) can be conveniently and quantitatively measured. It offers a novel method for surmounting the arbitrariness in the measurement of the three kinds of aluminum fractions and the repetitive calculation of Al(a) and Al(b).
