Abstract:While the practical application of electrode materials depends intensively on the Li+ ion storage mechanisms correlating ultimately with the coulombic efficiency, reversible capacity, and morphology variation of electrode material upon cycling, only intercalation-type electrode materials have proven viable for commercialization up to now. This paper reviews the promising anode materials of metal vanadates (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni, Li) that have high capacity, low cost, and abundant resource, and also discusses the related Li+ ion storage mechanism. It is concluded that most of these (MxVyOz, M = Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ni) exhibit irreversible redox reactions upon lithiation/delithiation accompanied by large volume expansion, which is not favorable for industrial applications. In particular, Li3VO4 with specific intercalation Li+ ion storage mechanism and compatible merits of safety and energy density exhibits great potential for practical application. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress in Li3VO4 research, including the representative fabrication approaches for advanced morphology and state-of-the-art technologies to boost performance and the morphology variation associated with Li+ ion storage mechanisms. Furthermore, an outlook on where breakthroughs for Li3VO4 may be most likely achieved will be provided.

Abstract:Next‐generation sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs) are considered to be promising alternatives to replace current lithium‐ion batteries due to the high abundance of sodium and potassium resources. New energetic vanadium‐based compounds that undergoes multielectron reactions and demonstrate good sodium/potassium storage capability, provide new solutions for high‐performance SIBs/PIBs in terms of high energy/power density and long‐time cyclability. So far, desirable rich redox centers (V2+‐V5+), consolidated frameworks, and the high theoretical capacities of vanadium‐based compounds have been widely explored for practical applications. Rational materials design utilizing vanadium multiredox centers and the fundamental understanding of their charge‐transfer processes and mechanisms are critical in the development of high‐performance battery systems. The scientific importance and basic design strategies for high performance V‐based anode/cathode materials, structure‐function properties and state‐of‐the‐art understanding of V‐based electrode materials are herein classified and highlighted alongside their design strategies. The important role of the valence electron layer of vanadium, and the scientific advances of vanadium partitions in other electrochemical behaviors are also summarized in detail. Finally, relevant strategies and perspectives discussed in this review provide practical guidance to explore the undiscovered potentials of multi‐electron reaction relationships of not only V‐based composites, but also other types of electrode materials.

Abstract:As the world transitions away from fossil fuels, energy storage, especially rechargeable batteries, could have a big role to play. Though rechargeable batteries have dramatically changed the energy landscape, their performance metrics still need to be further enhanced to keep pace with the changing consumer preferences along with the increasing demands from the market. For the most part, advances in battery technology rely on the continuing development of materials science, where the development of high-performance electrode materials helps to expand the world of battery innovation by pushing the limits of performance of existing batteries. This is where vanadium-based compounds (V-compounds) with intriguing properties can fit in to fill the gap of the current battery technologies.The history of experimenting with V-compounds (i.e., vanadium oxides, vanadates, vanadium-based NASICON) in various battery systems, ranging from monovalent-ion to multivalent-ion batteries, stretches back decades. They are fascinating materials that display rich redox chemistry arising from multiple valency and coordination geometries. Over the years, researchers have made use of the inherent ability of vanadium that undergoes metamorphosis between different coordination polyhedra accompanied by transitions in the oxidation state for reversible intercalation/insertion of more than one guest ions without breaking the structure apart. Such infinitely variable properties endow them with a wide range of electronic and crystallographic structures. The former attribute varies from insulators to metallic conductors while the latter feature gives rise to layered structures or 3D open tunnel frameworks that allow facile movement of a wide range of metal cations and guest species along the gallery. Accompanied by a growing stringent requirements for energy storage applications, most V-compounds face difficulty in resolving the problems of their own lack competitiveness mostly due to their intrinsically low ionic/electronic conductivity. The key to producing vanadium-based electrodes with the desired performance characteristics is the ability to fabricate and optimize them consistently to realize certain specifications through effective engineering strategies for property modulation.In this Account, we aim to provide a comprehensive article that correlates the fundamental of charge storage mechanism to crystallographic forms and design principle for V-compounds. More importantly, the essential roles played by engineering strategies in the property modulation of V-compounds are pinpointed to further explain the rationale behind their anomalous behavior. Apart from that, we further summarize the key theoretical and experimental results of some representative examples for tuning of properties. On the other hand, advances in characterization techniques are now sufficiently mature that they can be relied upon to understand the reaction mechanism of V-compounds by tracing real-time transformation and structural changes at the atomic scale during their working state. The mechanistic insights covered in this Account could be used as a fundamental guidance for several key strategies in electrode materials design in terms of dimension, morphology, composition, and architecture that govern the rate and degree of chemical reaction.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The abundance of sodium resources indicates the potential of sodium-ion batteries as emerging energy storage devices. However, the practical application of sodium-ion batteries is hindered by the limited electrochemical performance of electrode materials, especially at the anode side. Here, we identify alkaline earth metal vanadates as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries. The prepared calcium vanadate nanowires possess intrinsically high electronic conductivity (> 100 S cm-1), small volume change (< 10%), and a self-preserving effect, which results in a superior cycling and rate performance and an applicable reversible capacity (> 300 mAh g-1), with an average voltage of ∼1.0 V. The specific sodium-storage mechanism, beyond the conventional intercalation or conversion reaction, is demonstrated through in situ and ex situ characterizations and theoretical calculations. This work explores alkaline earth metal vanadates for sodium-ion battery anodes and may open a direction for energy storage.The development of suitable anode materials is essential to advance sodium-ion battery technologies. Here the authors report that alkaline earth metal vanadates are promising candidates due to the favorable electrochemical properties and interesting sodium-storage mechanism.

Abstract:The research advances in vanadium‐based compounds in recent years are systematically reviewed. The preparation methods, crystal structures, electrochemical performances, and energy storage mechanisms of vanadium‐based compounds are mainly introduced. Finally, the limitations and development prospects of vanadium‐based compounds are pointed out. Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) stand out among many monovalent/multivalent metal‐ion batteries as promising new energy storage devices because of their good safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, there are still many great challenges to exploring new‐type cathode materials that are suitable for Zn2+ intercalation. Vanadium‐based compounds with various structures, large layer spacing, and different oxidation states are considered suitable cathode candidates for AZIBs. Herein, the research advances in vanadium‐based compounds in recent years are systematically reviewed. The preparation methods, crystal structures, electrochemical performances, and energy storage mechanisms of vanadium‐based compounds (e.g., vanadium phosphates, vanadium oxides, vanadates, vanadium sulfides, and vanadium nitrides) are mainly introduced. Finally, the limitations and development prospects of vanadium‐based compounds are pointed out. Vanadium‐based compounds as cathode materials for AZIBs are hoped to flourish in the coming years and attract more and more researchers' attention.

Abstract:Owing to their rich structural chemistry and unique electrochemical properties, vanadium-based materials, especially the low-dimensional ones, are showing promising applications in energy storage and conversion. In this invited review, low-dimensional vanadium-based materials (including 0D, 1D, and 2D nanostructures of vanadium-containing oxides, polyanions, and mixed-polyanions) and their emerging applications in advanced alkali-metal-ion batteries (e.g., Li-ion, Na-ion, and K-ion batteries) are systematically summarized. Future development trends, challenges, solutions, and perspectives are discussed and proposed. Mechanisms and new insights are also given for the development of advanced vanadium-based materials in high-performance energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:The emerging electrochemical energy storage systems beyond Li‐ion batteries, including Na/K/Mg/Ca/Zn/Al‐ion batteries, attract extensive interest as the development of Li‐ion batteries is seriously hindered by the scarce lithium resources. During the past years, large amounts of studies have focused on the investigation of various electrode materials toward emerging metal‐ion batteries to realize high energy density, high power density, and a long cycle life. In particular, vanadium‐based nanomaterials have received great attention. Vanadium‐based compounds have a big family with different structures, chemical compositions, and electrochemical properties, which provide huge possibilities for the development of emerging electrochemical energy storage. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the recent progresses of promising vanadium‐based nanomaterials for emerging metal‐ion batteries is presented. The vanadium‐based materials are classified into four groups: vanadium oxides, vanadates, vanadium phosphates, and oxygen‐free vanadium‐based compounds. The structures, electrochemical properties, and modification strategies are discussed. The structure–performance relationships and charge storage mechanisms are focused on. Finally, the perspectives about future directions of vanadium‐based nanomaterials for emerging energy storage devices are proposed. This review will provide comprehensive knowledge of vanadium‐based nanomaterials and shed light on their potential applications in emerging energy storage.

Abstract:The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) holds promise for large‐scale energy storage applications, despite its lower energy and power densities compared to advanced secondary batteries available today. Carbon materials are considered suitable catalyst electrodes for improving many aspects of the VRFB. However, pristine graphite structures in carbon materials are catalytically inert and require modification to activate their catalytic activity. Among the various strategies developed so far, O‐functionalization and chemical doping of carbon materials are considered some of the most promising pathways to regulate their electronic structures. Building on the catalytic mechanisms involved in the VRFB, this concise review discusses recent advancements in the O‐functionalization and chemical doping of carbon materials. Furthermore, it explores how these materials can be tailored and highlights future directions for developing more promising VRFBs to guide future research.

Abstract:With the increasing dependence on high power equipment, there is an urgent need to develop advanced and sustainable energy systems. As one of the main energy storage devices, battery research should make great efforts to implement the sustainable development strategies on ecological, clean and environmentally friendly energy. Currently, aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have gained much attention owing to their cheapness, abundant resources, high safety, and ecological friendliness. Nevertheless, ZIBs also have shortcomings with respect to the positive electrode. Therefore, the development of satisfactory positive electrode materials with structural stability and high capacity has become the focus of attention. In recent years, many vanadium‐based compounds have been strongly upheld for their advantages of safety and high theoretical capacity. In this paper, different energy storage mechanisms of vanadium‐based positive electrodes are summarized. Typical structures, such as layered and tunnel types, are particularly emphasized. Moreover, the comparison and analysis of electrochemical results of vanadium‐based compounds, including vanadium oxide and metal vanadate are focused. Finally, the strategies for improving aqueous ZIBs and development prospects are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphite felt is disadvantageous of lower electrochemical reaction activity, which is improved by introducing catalysts. Especially, cheaper materials and simple fabrication are popular for reducing cost. In this work, electrodeposited-lead electrode is proposed for improving electrochemical reaction activity of VO2+/VO+2 couple as well as charge-discharge performance of the battery. Experiment platform is established for vanadium redox flow battery. Cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge performance measurements are carried out. Electron scanning microscope (SEM) is employed to investigate the surface morphology of electrode. Results show that peak potential difference (Delta E+) and peak current ratio (Ia +/Ic +) with electrodeposited-lead electrode is 103.7 mV lower and 0.249 lower than that with untreated electrode for VO2+/VO+2 electrochemical reaction. Electron scanning microscope images exhibit that lead particles are adhered extensively on carbon fiber of electrodeposited-lead electrode, which improves electrochemical activity of VO2+/VO+2 couple. Energy efficiency of the battery with electrodeposited-lead electrode in positive side is higher than that with untreated electrode by 8.5% at 60 mA cm-2. Electrodeposited-lead electrode exhibits higher activity to VO2+/VO+2 reaction and brings about higher energy efficiency of battery. This work provides a suitable electrode for vanadium redox flow battery.

Abstract:As an emerging energy storage device with high-safety aqueous electrolytes, low-cost, environmental benignity and large-reserves, the rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted more and more attention. Vanadium-based compounds are also supposed as the potential candidate cathode materials for AZIBs due to their wide variety of phases, variable crystal structures and high theoretical capacity. In this review, the recent progress in the development of vanadium-based materials was summarized, and the relationship between the crystal structure types of active materials and Zn-ion transport mechanism was highlighted. During the charge-discharge process, the different electrostatic repulsion between the cations of vanadium-based compounds with different crystal structures and Zn2+ results in a variety of the Zn-ion storage mechanisms, which can be significant guidance for designing the advanced battery-electrode materials for AZIBs. Furthermore, other factors associated with the storage mechanisms, such as electrolyte components and electrode morphology, are discussed. Finally, the strategies to improve the electrical conductivity, inhibit the dissolution and stabilize the crystal structure of vanadium-based compounds are proposed and the future prospects for developing high-energy-density AZIBs are presented

The redox voltage of doped cathodes usually falls in between the voltage of undoped layered cathodes. However, we found anomalous redox features in NaTi1-yVyS2. The first discharge platform potential (2.4 V) is significantly higher than that of undoped NaTiS2 and NaVS2 (both around 2.2 V), and the energy density is raised by 15 %. We speculate that the anomalous voltage is mainly attributed to the strong hybridization in the Ti-V-S system. Ti3+ and V3+ undergo charge transfer and form a more stable Ti (t(2g)(0)e(g)(0)) and V (t(2g)(3)e(g)(0)) electronic configuration. Our results indicate that higher voltage of cathode materials could be achieved by strong TM-ligand covalency, and this conclusion provides possible opportunities to explore high voltage materials for future layered cathodes.

Abstract:Revitalized interest in vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) arises from two very important developments in rechargeable batteries. One is the push on lithium-ion batteries for higher energy density batteries: using lithium metal as anode and searching for higher capacity and high voltage cathode. Using lithium metal anode eliminates the big obstacle for V2O5 cathode that does not come with lithium ions. V2O5 possesses the highest reversible capacity among known cathode materials. Another is the recent intensive research for cathode materials beyond Li-ion batteries (LIBs). In the past several years, interest in complementary alkali-ion battery technologies has seen a tremendous resurgence. Out of the set of alternative chemistries, V2O5 has seen the most considerable and promising gains as a cathode for Na-ion battery (NIB), Mg-ion battery (MIB), and other metal batteries. Unlike LIBs, these systems face a set of new challenges as dictated by the properties of the transported ionic species and the consequent effects on the electrode materials. The purpose of this review is to summarize the most interesting or surprising phenomena, the important questions raised and next experimental and theoretical steps to advance V2O5 cathode materials in the field of metal batteries. This review focused on selected topics covering the influences of surface chemistry, crystallinity, doping, defects, and nanostructures on the lithium-ion intercalation properties and recent developments on other metal batteries including NIBs and MIBs. The perspectives and remaining challenges for V2O5 based cathode materials have been discussed.
