Abstract:The present work demonstrates an approach to develop full bio-based polybenzoxazines with excellent low-temperature curing performance. In order to achieve this goal, biomass-derived phloroglucinol (P) as phenol source, furfurylamine (FA) or P-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as amine source and paraformaldehyde were selected to synthesize two novel full bio-based benzoxazine resin (3,7,11-tris(furan-2-ylmethyl)-3,4,7,8,11,12-hexahydro-2H,6H,10H-benzol [1,2-e:3,4-e' :5,6-e ''] tris([1,3]oxazine) (P-fa) and 4, 4',4 '' -(2H,6H,10H-benzo [1,2-e :3, 4- e' : 5,6-e ''] tris([1,3]oxazine)-3,7,11(4H,8H,12H)-triyetribenzonic acid (P-paba)). Their structures and curing reactions had been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton and carbon nuclear magnetic spectroscopy (H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with bisphenol A/ aniline benzoxazine (BA-a), P-fa and P-paba monomers showed a different curing reaction process and excellent low temperature curing performance, especially P-paba monomer, whose exothermic peak was in a temperature range of 140-170 degrees C. The obtained full bio-based polybenzoxazines presented a low degradation rate (-3.58 wt %/min), high char yield (53.0%), low heat release capacity (37 J/g.K), and low total heat release (8.3 kJ/g). Meanwhile, P-paba monomer had an excellent promoting effect on the curing reaction of P-fa monomer. These findings have highly significant implications for the design of new full bio-based polybenzoxazines with excellent low-temperature curing performance and high residual char.

Abstract:For curing bio-based benzoxazine monomers completely below 200 C, bio-based phloretic acid (PHA), p-coumaric acid (pCOA), and ferulic acid (FEA) containing a carboxylic group as a phenol source and furfurylamine (FA) as an amine source are used to prepare three full bio-based benzoxazines (PHA-fa, pCOA-fa, and FEA-fa). Differential scanning calorimetry experimental results showed that PHA-fa, pCOA-fa, and FEA-fa possessed low ring-opening polymerization temperatures and Delta H values and could be cured completely below 200 degrees C. The obtained full bio-based polybenzoxazines (poly(PHA-fa), poly(pCOA-fa), and poly(FEA-fa)) presented lower decomposition rates and higher residual char at 800 degrees C. In addition, poly(PHA-fa), poly(pCOA-fa), and poly(FEA-fa) were predicted to have good flame retardancy due to low heat release capacity and total heat release values. From the above results, it is known that natural renewable resources, PHA, pCOA, FEA, and FA, contribute to obtaining high-performance bio-based thermosets with excellent low-temperature curing performance and high char at 800 degrees C, which make them suitable for applications of plant fiber-reinforced composites.
Synthesis and Properties of a Novel Bio-based Benzoxazine

Abstract:A novel bio-based benzoxazine resin (phenolphthalein-furfuramine-benzoxazine , PTL-F-BOZ) , used bio-based furfurylamine , phenolphthalein , and paraformaldehyde as raw materials , was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) , nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR) . The curing , thermal and flame retardant properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) , thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) , limiting oxygen index (LOI) , vertical burning test, microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) , cone calorimeter(Cone) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) . The DSC curve of PTL-F-BOZ showed a two-stage curing with two maxima at 224 and 251 degrees C respectively, and had lower curing temperature than that of the traditional fossil-based bisphenol benzoxazine bisphenol A-aniline benzoxazine (bisphenol A-aniline-benzoxazine , BPA-A-BOZ) . The presence of the furan ring in the furfurylamine increased the cross-linking density of polymer, retarded the rearrangement reaction from the phenoxy structure to the phenol structure, and resulted in two curing peaks in the DSC curve of PTL-F-BOZ. Under nitrogen and air atmospheres, the temperatures of 5% mass loss (T-5%) for PPTL-F-BOZ resin were 380 and 370 degrees C , respectively and the residual chars at 800 degrees C were 63. 0% and 10. 5% , respectively. Compared with PBPA-A-BOZ resin, PPTL-F-BOZ resin both possessed higher T-5% and residual char of 800 degrees C. From the DTG curve , the maximum mass loss rates of two decomposition stage (Peak 1 and Peak 2 values) of PPTL-FBOZ resin were 0. 67%/min and 3. 28%/min, which were only 7. 38% and 63. 44% of PBPA-A-BOZ (9. 07%/min and 5. 17%/min) under nitrogen atmosphere , and those were also the same under air atmosphere. LOI of PPTL-F-BOZ resin was 36. 2%, which was higher than that of PBPA-A-BOZ resin. Meanwhile, in the UL-94 test, PPTL-F-BOZ resin extinguished quickly and released less smoke during combustion process, and the original morphology was kept well and a stable carbon layer was formed after burning. Its first ignition time(t(1)) and second ignition time(t(2)) were 1. 4 and 8. 5 s , respectively , far smaller than the maximum permissible values of 10 s, and a UL94 V-0 rating was also achieved. Hence, PPTL-F-BOZ resin showed excellent thermal and flame retardant properties.

Abstract:A novel bio-based benzoxazine resin (diphenolic acid/furfurylamine benzoxazine resin, PDPA-F-Boz) was prepared by using bio-based diphenolic acid, furfurylamine and paraformaldehyde as raw materials. The structure of DPA-F-Boz monomer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR, and then its curing reaction and the thermal stability of the cured PDPA-F-Boz were analyzed. Compared with the traditional fossil-based benzoxazine (bisphenol A/aniline benzoxazine, BPA-A-Boz) and the bio-based benzoxazine (diphenolic acid/aniline benzoxazine, DPA-A-Boz), DPA-F-Boz monomer showed the lowest curing temperature, and PDPA-F-Boz had the highest residual char ratio at 800 degrees C and the lowest degradation rate at the peak temperature. Meanwhile, the total heat release, peak heat release rate and heat release capacity of PDPA-F-Boz were much lower than those of PBPA-A-Boz and PDPA-A-Boz. Abstract:Two new bio‐benzoxazine monomers containing imide or amide group have been synthesized, which suggests the possiblity for obtaining high‐performance thermosets from renwable resources. Two novel bio‐based benzoxazine monomers containing imide or amide group (HPIDD‐fa and HPBA‐fa) were synthesized from raw materials of benzoyl chloride/phthalic anhydride, tyramine, furfurylamine and paraformaldehyde via a two‐step reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were performed to characterize the structures of the benzoxazine monomers. The curing behavior was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT‐IR, and the DSC results indicate that the peak curing temperatures of HPIDD‐fa and HPBA‐fa are centered at 248.5 and 230.1°C, respectively. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) suggests that the newly developed bio‐based benzoxazine‐derived polybenzoxazines present excellent thermal stability with Td10 (temperature at 10% weight loss) of 385 and 368°C for poly(HPIDD‐fa) and poly(HPBA‐fa), respectively. The current investigation suggests that our newly obtained bio‐based thermosetting resins are promising materials for high‐tech applications.

Abstract:This work details the scalable and solventless synthesis of a potential fully biobased monobenzoxazine resin derived from tyrosol and furfurylamine. The structure of the monomer was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The curing of the precursors was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheological measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The properties of the resulting biobased polybenzoxazine were then determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). A thermally stable resin was obtained with 5% and 10% weight-reduction-temperature (Td5 and Td10) values of 349 and 395 °C, respectively, and a char yield of 53%. Moreover, the low melting temperature, low viscosity, and excellent thermomechanical behavior make this fully biobased resin a promising candidate for coating applications.

Abstract:Benzoxazines, renowned for their intrinsic self-curing properties, elevated glass transition temperature, and exceptional thermal stability, have encountered environmental and bio-toxicity concerns despite their impressive performance. The integration of high-performance, eco-friendly, and degradable benzoxazines remains a formidable challenge. In this work, we synthesized a fully bio-based benzoxazine resin, 2,6-bis(3-(furan-2-ylmethyl)-8-methoxy-2-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e] [1,3] oxazin-6-yl)tetrahydro-[1,3]dioxino[5,4-d] [1,3]dioxine (VE-BZ), from natural raw materials, including vanillin, erythritol, furfurylamine, and natural benzaldehyde. The presence of bis(acetal) structure, furanic structure, and benzene ring-branched chain structure in the resin confers favorable adhesive strength, high carbon residue and self-extinguishing ability to VE-BZ. Moreover, VE-BZ can undergo dual-site curing reaction and complete degradation through the synergistic effects of acid and heat, enabling its reuse in benzoxazine synthesis. The acid for both synthesis and degradation is bio-based citric acid, eliminating catalysts or additives from the entire process. This approach embodies a comprehensive green chemistry closed-loop process. In essence, our research provides valuable perspectives on seamlessly combining exceptional performance with eco-friendly attributes in the realm of benzoxazine resins.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to synthesize two different benzoxazines (Bz) monomers using bio-based and petroleum-based primary amines, respectively, and they have been compared to study their thermal and mechanical performances. Design/methodology/approach A bio-based bisphenol, Divanillin (DiVa), was formed by reacting two moles of vanillin with one mole of ethylenediamine (EDA) which was then reacted firstly with paraformaldehyde and EDA to form the benzoxazine DiVa-EDA-Bz, and secondly with paraformaldehyde and furfuryl amine (FFA) to form the benzoxazine DiVa-FFA-Bz. The molecular structure and thermal properties of the benzoxazines were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H,13C) spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The benzoxazines were further coated on mild steel panels to evaluate their mechanical properties and chemical resistance. Findings The DSC results of DiVa-FFA-Bz showed two exothermic peaks related to crosslinking compared to the one in DiVa-EDA-Bz. The DiVa-FFA-Bz also showed a higher heat of polymerization than DiVa-EDA-Bz. The TGA results showed that DiVa-FFA-Bz exhibited higher thermal stability with a residual char of 54.10% than 43.24% for DiVa-EDA-Bz. The chemical resistance test results showed that DiVa-FFA-Bz showed better chemical resistance and mechanical properties due to its higher crosslinking density. Originality/value This study shows the use of bio-based materials, vanillin and FFA, for synthesizing a benzoxazine resin and its application at high temperatures.

Abstract:A novel class of low-viscosity benzoxazines has been synthesized from melamine and formaldehyde with phenol or bisphenol A. The striking feature of the class of benzoxazines is the subtle combination of their inherently low viscosity at room temperature, good film-forming characteristics and high chemical and thermal stability mainly due to the introduction of melamine into the network of the polymers. The structure of the benzoxazines has been confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of polybenzoxazine have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Transparent polybenzoxazine films were easily obtained under solvent-free conditions, exhibiting significantly improved toughness compared to the conventional polybenzoxazines. Our research may open a new path for overcoming the present drawbacks of polybenzoxazines such as high brittleness, the difficulties in preparing films and poor processibility via tailoring the structures and properties of amine in the benzoxazines. Synthesis of Daidzein and Thiophene Containing Benzoxazine Resin and Its Thermoset and Carbon Material

Abstract:In this work, a novel bio-based high-performance bisbenzoxazine resin was synthesized from daidzein, 2-thiophenemethylamine and paraformaldehyde. The chemical structure was confirmed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The polymerization process was systematically studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR spectra. It can be polymerized through multiple polymerization behaviors under the synergistic reaction of thiophene rings with benzopyrone rather than a single polymerization mechanism of traditional benzoxazines, as reported. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) were used to study the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the resulting polybenzoxazine. The thermosetting material showed a high carbon residue rate of 62.8% and a low heat release capacity (HRC) value of 33 J/gK without adding any flame retardants. Based on its outstanding capability of carbon formation, this newly obtained benzoxazine resin was carbonized and activated to obtain a porous carbon material doped with both sulfur and nitrogen. The CO2 absorption of the carbon material at 0 °C and 25 °C at 1 bar was 3.64 mmol/g and 3.26 mmol/g, respectively. The above excellent comprehensive properties prove its potential applications in many advanced fields.

Abstract:A series of bio‐based fluorin‐free main‐chain type benzoxazine precursors were synthesized via bisphenol A/bisphenol F/diallyl bisphenol A, Priamine 1074 and paraformaldehyde by Mannich condensation reaction. Chemical structures of these obtained main‐chain type precursors were characterized by FT‐IR and NMR spectroscopies. The polymerization processes were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and in situ FT‐IR analysis. Besides, the contact angle and surface free energy of polybenzoxazine coatings were measured by water contact angle instrument. Moreover, the thermal performance of the resulting polybenzoxazine thermosets were evaluated by dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Through the above various measurements, the newly developed bio‐based main‐chain type polybenzoxazine resins show good thermal stability and low surface free energy, suggesting great potential for applications as high‐performance resin matrix.

Abstract:Developing high-performance thermosets with outstanding anti-flammability from sustainable resources has attracted increasing attention due to both safety and environmental concerns. Herein, a novel bio-based bis-benzoxazine thermosetting resin has been successfully synthesized via Mannich condensation reaction from paraformaldehyde and natural renewable resources, aesculetin and furfurylamine. Detailed information of the chemical structure for this bio-benzoxazine is analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies, elemental analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). In addition, the resin polymerization behavior is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR analyses. Notably, the fully polymerized bio-thermoset shows high thermal stability with Td10 of 407 °C and Tg of 261 °C, and extremely low flammability with heat release capacity (HRC) value of 2.51 J·g−1·K−1 and total heat release (THR) value of 0.78 kJ·g−1. Overall, the current work provides a facile and sustainable synthetic route access to a series of halogen- and phosphorus-free nonflammable bio-thermosets based on smart benzoxazine chemistry.

Abstract:High heat resistance, low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss benzoxazine resin is of great significance to the practical application of information industry. In this article, two biobased benzoxazine monomers HA-dea and H-dea were prepared by mannich reaction using p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol and hordenine as phenol sources and 1,10-diaminodecane as amine sources. The two benzoxazine monomers showed different thermodynamic behaviors. The melting point of HA-dea was 77.5 o C, while H-dea was liquid at room temperature, the viscosity of H-dea at room temperature (25 o C) was 5.517 Pa/s. The curing peak temperatures of the two monomers were 217 and 193 o C, respectively. Both monomers showed excellent processability. Two benzoxazine resins poly(HA-dea) and poly(H-dea) were prepared through thermal curing procedure, and the comprehensive properties of two benzoxazine resins were investigated. The glass transition temperatures ( T g ) of poly(HA-dea) and poly(H-dea) were 267 o C and 233 o C, respectively, showing excellent heat resistance of the newly prepared resin. Moreover, poly(HA-dea) and poly(H-dea) have both high storage modulus (3341 MPa and 3124 MPa, respectively, measured at 25 o C) and good flexural strength (109±3.6 MPa and 101±3.8 MPa). Moreover, the resins poly(HA-dea) and poly(H-dea) also have low dielectric constant and dielectric loss at 1MHz, the dielectric constants are 2.78 and 2.56, respectively, and dielectric losses are 0.018 and 0.016, respectively. Among the two resins, poly(HA-dea) exhibits more excellent heat resistance, which may be based on the multi-crosslinking sites and hydrogen bond crosslinking networks.

Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. Benzoxazine containing phthalonitrile, as one of the most advanced high performance thermosetting resin, has gained a lot of attention in the last decades. Indeed, the combination of the thermally activated ring-opening polymerization of the benzoxazine and the cyano addition reaction of the phthalonitrile allows the development of robust polymeric networks. Following this path, a renewable natural resource, vanillin, was used to develop a new benzoxazine containing phthalonitrile thermosetting system. The newly developed monomers present the advantage of a simple synthesis process along with an autocatalytic polymerization mechanism. The molecular structures of the synthesized monomers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The curing behavior was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The newly developed monomers were then reinforced with a silane surface modified basalt fibers (BFs) allowing the preparation of a high performance green composite. The silane surface modification of the BFs was confirmed by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The tensile and bending tests highlighted the remarkable mechanical properties of the developed green composite. Finally, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the mechanism of stress transfer between the matrix and the fillers. Overall, the developed green composite can be seen as a promising substitute to composites made from glass fibers.

Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. In an attempt to make polybenzoxazines more sustainable, a novel bio-based benzoxazine monomer namely Q-Bz was synthetized via the Mannich condensation reaction utilizing Quercetin, paraformaldehyde and aniline. The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies (FTIR). The curing behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the polymerization process was investigated by FTIR. The obtained results showed very low melting and polymerization temperatures (73 and 183°C, respectively) and the disappearance of the oxazine ring absorption bands due to the ring opening polymerization of the monomers. Afterwards, the cured bio-based thermoset, referred to as PQ-Bz, was obtained and its thermal stability and thermo-mechanical properties were also assessed by DSC and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As expected the newly developed thermoset exhibited high thermal stability along with excellent processability. Indeed, the results showed that PQ-Bz had a relatively high Tg of approximately 280°C, with a 53% char yield at 800°C, 5% and 10% weight reduction temperature (T5% and T10%) values of 349 and 373°C, respectively. These findings demonstrate the potential of the novel bio-based benzoxazine monomer as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based thermosets in high performance applications.

Abstract:Synthesis of eugenol‐derived biobenzoxazines and TGA thermograms of these bio‐benzoxazines and their corresponding polybenzoxazines. In this study, we succesfully synthesized bio‐benzoxazine resins using eugenol, a bio‐based phenolic compound, in combination with three distinct functional amines: ethanamine, aniline, and hexane‐1,6‐diamine. Characterization of the resulting bio‐benzoxazine resins, namely E‐ea (eugenol, ethanamine), E‐a (eugenol, aniline), and E‐dh (eugenol, hexane‐1,6‐diamine), was performed through 1H NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, high‐resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Thermal properties were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for both the eugenol‐derived bio‐benzoxazines (E‐ea, E‐a, E‐dh) and their corresponding polybenzoxazines (PE‐ea, PE‐a, PE‐dh). Notably, all eugenol‐based polybenzoxazines exhibited excellent thermal stability with very similar characteristics. Our findings suggest that the presence of allyl groups in eugenol promoted a more cross‐linked network structure compared to other functional groups on amines. As a result, eugenol‐derived bio‐benzoxazines demonstrated superior thermal properties, illustrated by their impressive char yields: PE‐ea; 45.6%, PE‐a; 45.1%, and PE‐dh; 44.1%.

Abstract:Polybenzoxazines (PBz) are a new type of resin belonging to the category of phenolic resins. As polybenzoxazines are addition-curable polymers, this obviates many of the shortcomings associated with conventional phenolic resins while endowing them with excellent thermal, physical, and thermo-physical properties and surpass the features of many conventional and state-of-the-art polymers. They even possess excellent design flexibility. In this study, a benzoxazine monomer was successfully synthesized from eugenol (Eu), ethylenediamine, and paraformaldehyde utilizing a solventless approach. The synthesized benzoxazine resin was characterized for its structural elucidation via FTIR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy and was used for crosslinking a petroleum-based epoxy and a gallic acid-based epoxy. The effects of the presence of benzoxazine on the thermal and flame retardant properties of the films were evaluated using TGA and DSC analysis and the LOI and UL 94 tests, respectively. It was found that the benzoxazine in the epoxy systems led to an increase in thermal stability and flame retardancy. The gallic acid-based epoxy system showed better thermal and flame retardant properties compared to the petroleum-based epoxy system, thus showing potential to replace the petroleum-based epoxy for high-performance applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:A bio-based benzoxazine monomer, diphenolic methyl ester hexafluoro diamino benzoxazine (DPME-HFBz), was successfully synthesized from diphenolic acid (DPA), and the chemical structure was successfully verified. The curing kinetics were studied via non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The activation energies of DPME-HFBz were calculated by Kissinger and Ozawa methods to be 136.15 and 139.92 kJ/mol, respectively, and the reaction order was calculated to be first order. Owing to the large number of hydrogen bonds after polymerization, poly(DPME-HFBz) presented an ultra-high glass transition temperature of 312 °C and a high initial decomposition temperature (350 °C under air and 345 °C under nitrogen). Because of the excellent charring ability (50.2% residue under nitrogen), the LOI value of poly(DPME-HFBz) was as high as 38%. Poly(DPME-HFBz) also exhibited a very low heat release capacity (HRC) of 90 J/(g·K). In addition, poly(DPME-HFBz) had a dielectric constant (Dk) of 1.88 at 1.5 MHz, which was much lower than the Dk of the reported low-dielectric polymers. This work provides an efficient and sustainable strategy for the synthesis of benzoxazine thermosetting materials with excellent comprehensive properties.
