Abstract:The actinide plutonium (Pu) isotopes and the fission product radiocesium isotopes released in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) nuclear accident have drawn scientific attention in post-accident studies. In this chapter, studies that trace the Pu and radiocesium isotopes released from the FDNPP accident into the environment to ensure better nuclear emergency preparedness for the future were summarized. The characteristic Pu-240/Pu-239, Pu-241/Pu-239, and Cs-135/Cs-137 atom ratios of the FDNPP accident were determined to be 0.323-0.330, 0.128-0.135, and 0.333-0.343, respectively, which were distinct from those of global fallout. While Pu and radiocesium isotopic signatures from the accident were detected in the terrestrial environment, the release of Pu to the marine environment, if any, was negligible. And no data for Cs-135 in the marine environment has been reported yet.

Abstract:A large amount of radioactivity was released into the environment after the Fukushima nuclear accident(FNA) in Japan in 2011. This radioactivity had a significant impact on the global environment, and there was much public concern about its effects. The subsequent assessment of the FNA and the environmental remediation required are proving to be long and complicated tasks. The assessments are based on the radioactive source terms for the FNA, which determine the level of damage caused by the nuclear accident. We investigated the radioactive source terms from three aspects: the amount and composition of the radionuclides; the activity and atomic ratio of the radionuclides; and comparison with other historical events. The total amount of radioactivity, excluding the radioactive noble gases( 8 5Kr and 1 33Xe), released by the FNA was about 10% of that released by the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 and <1‰ of the global fallout from the atmosphere nuclear explosion. However, the FNA was the most serious nuclear accident in terms of radioactive pollution of the marine environment. The recovery actions carried out after the FNA have been evaluated and the environmental impacts of the FNA are discussed.
Isotopic determination of U, Pu and Cs in environmental waters following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Abstract:Concentrations of the radionuclides, U, Pu, and Cs were measured in water samples (10-20 L) to study analyte dispersion and migration following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. A total of 8 water samples including oceanic water and paddy-field water were collected in the vicinity of the plant. Determinations of U, Pu and Cs isotopes were performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and γ-ray spectrometry. The 236U/238U atom ratio was in the range 1.83-8.20 × 10-9 for fresh water and around 0.57 × 10-9 for seawater while the concentration of 236U was about 104-105 and 106 atoms/kg, respectively. Plutonium (239,240Pu) was detected in one riverine sample and the marine samples at very low levels and with large uncertainty. The concentrations of 137Cs in fresh riverine samples were 0.02-0.46 Bq/kg which are more than three orders of magnitude larger than the global fallout level. As for seawater samples within 80 km offshore of the FDNPP, the concentrations of 137Cs were 10-20 times higher than that of the Japan Sea water. Also 134Cs and 137Cs were of similar concentrations in all samples. The results show that volatile and refractory nuclides such as Cs, U and Pu exist in the dissolved phase, which can be readily assimilated by plants/humans. However the environmental impact of Pu and U in the vicinity of the FDNPP is considered to be low in comparison to that of the volatile radionuclide Cs.

Abstract:Six years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, data for 236U and 236U/238U have remained limited to a few heavily contaminated samples. In the present study, activities of 236U, 239Pu, and 240Pu, along with other U isotopes in 46 soil samples both heavily and lightly contaminated by this accident were measured by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and triple-quadrupole ICP-MS. The 236U activities and 236U/238U atom ratios in these soil samples were in the range of (0.469–24.4) × 10−5 Bq kg−1 and ((0.099–1.35) × 10−7), respectively. Higher 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.245–0.312) and 238Pu/239+240Pu activity ratios (0.859–1.62) indicated Pu contamination originated from this accident and global fallout in some samples. For those soil samples along with black substances collected along roads in Fukushima Prefecture, high linear correlations were presented between 236U activities and 239+240Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.755, p < 0.01), and between 236U activities and 238Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.844, p < 0.01). The analysis of these soil samples confirmed the release of 236U, although in trace amounts, during the FDNPP accident.

Abstract:The dispersion timeline and the specific ratio characterization of airborne radionuclides released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident were investigated based on an analysis of the monitoring data obtained from regional stations and radionuclide stations of the International Monitoring System for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The comprehensive temporal sequence of airborne radionuclide arrival time at different sites was given, including xenon, iodine, and cesium isotopes, which could be used to validate and evaluate atmospheric transport modeling. Based on the decay time estimation method, the release time and process of radionuclides were calculated and analyzed through activity ratios of I-133 to I-131, Cs-136 to Cs-137, and Cs-134 to Cs-137. It indicated that radioiodine isotopes leaked from the reactors in the early stage after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, and there were two sources which leaked radiocesium, one is units 1, 2, and 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and the other is the spent fuel pools with a high possibility. Generally, this study provides some valuable findings and information for further evaluation of the accident and relevant research work.

Isotopic ratio and vertical distribution of radionuclides in soil affected by the accident of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plants

Abstract:The results of γ analyses of soil samples obtained from 50 locations in Fukushima prefecture on April 20, 2011, revealed the presence of a spectrum of radionuclides resulted from the accident of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP). The sum γ radioactivity concentration ranged in more than 3 orders of magnitude, depending on the sampling locations. The contamination of soils in the northwest of the FDNPP was considerable. The (131)I/(137)Cs activity ratios of the soil samples plotted as a function of the distance from the F1 NPPs exhibited three distinctive patterns. Such patterns would reflect not only the different deposition behaviors of these radionuclides, but also on the conditions of associated release events such as temperature and compositions and physicochemical forms of released radionuclides. The (136)Cs/(137)Cs activity ratio, on the other hand, was considered to only reflect the difference in isotopic compositions of source materials. Two locations close to the NPP in the northwest direction were found to be depleted in short-lived (136)Cs. This likely suggested the presence of distinct sources with different (136)Cs/(137)Cs isotopic ratios, although their details were unknown at present. Vertical γ activity profiles of (131)I and (137)Cs were also investigated, using 20-30 cm soil cores in several locations. About 70% or more of the radionuclides were present in the uppermost 2-cm regions. It was found that the profiles of (131)I/(137)Cs activity ratios showed maxima in the 2-4 cm regions, suggesting slightly larger migration of the former nuclide.

Abstract:The radiological releases from the damaged fuel to the atmosphere and into the cooling water in the Fukushima Daiich Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident are investigated. Atmospheric releases to the land and ocean mostly occurred during the first week after the accident whereas continuous release from the damaged fuel into the cooling water resulted in an accumulation of contaminated water in the plant during last six years. An evaluation of measurement data and analytical model for the release of radionuclides indicated that atmospheric releases were mainly governed by the volatility of the radionuclides. Using the measurement data on the contaminated water, the mechanism for the release of long-lived radionuclides into the cooling water was analyzed. It was found that the radioactivity concentrations of 90Sr in the contaminated water in the Primary Containment Vessel (PCV) of unit 2 and unit 3 were consistently higher than that of 137Cs and the radioactivity concentration of 90Sr in the turbine building of unit 1 in year 2015 was higher than that in year 2011. It was also observed that the radioactivity concentration of long-lived radionuclides in the contaminated water in the FDNPP is still high even in year 2015. The activity ratio of 238Pu/239+240Pu for the contaminated water was in the range of 1.7-5.4, which was significantly different from the ratios from the soil samples representing the atmospheric releases of FDNPP. It is concluded that the release mechanisms into the atmosphere and cooling water are clearly different and there has been significant amount of long-lived radionuclides released into the contaminated water.

Abstract:The radioactive fission products 135Cs, 137Cs and 90Sr have been released into the environment by human activities such as nuclear weapon tests, nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear power plant accidents. Monitoring of these radionuclides is important for dose assessment. Moreover, the 135Cs/137Cs isotopic ratio can be used as an important long-term fingerprint for radioactive source identification as it varies with weapon, reactor and fuel types.In recent years, mass spectrometry has become a powerful method for the determination of 135Cs, 137Cs and 90Sr in environmental samples. Mass spectrometry is characterized by the high sensitivity and low detection limit and the relatively shorter sample preparation and analysis times compared with radiometric methods. However, the mass spectrometric determination of radiocesium and 90Sr is affected by the peak tailings of the stable nuclides 133Cs and 88Sr, respectively, and the related isobaric and polyatomic interferences. Chemical separation and optimization of the mass spectrometry instrumental setup are strongly needed prior to the mass spectrometry detection.In this paper, we have reviewed the published works about the determination of 135Cs, 137Cs and 90Sr by mass spectrometry. The mass spectrometric techniques we cover are resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS), thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For each technique, the principles or strategies used for the analysis of these radionuclides are discussed; these included the abundance sensitivity, ways to suppress the interference signals, and the instrumental setup. In particular, the chemical procedures for eliminating the interferences are also summarized. To date, triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) showed great ability for the analysis of these radionuclides and the detection limits were as low as 0.01pg/mL levels. Finally, some investigations on the behaviors of radiocesium and radioactive source identifications are presented with the results of 135Cs/137Cs isotopic ratios measured in various environmental samples.

Abstract:The Fukushima Nuclear Accident (FNA) resulted in a large amount of radionuclides released into the atmosphere and dispersed globally, which has greatly raised public concerns. The state of the art for source terms of 19 kinds of radionuclides derived from the FNA was comprehensively collected and compared with levels of the global fallout and the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident (CNA). The atmospheric impacts of the FNA were evaluated from three aspects including radioactive baseline of the atmosphere, the concentration limits in standards and radiological protection. The FNA should not impose significant radiological risk on the public members in the countries excluding Japan. A conceptual scheme of Fukushima-derived radionuclides with physical and physicochemical insights on different temporal–spatial timescales was discussed and illustrated to understand their fates in the atmosphere.

Abstract:To evaluate the environmental contamination and contributory external exposure after the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP), the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in soil samples from each area were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Six artificial radionuclides ((131)I, (134)Cs, (137)Cs, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs) were detected in soil samples around FNPP. Calculated external effective doses from artificial radionuclide contamination in soil samples around FNPP were 1.9-2.9 μSv h(-1) (8.7-17.8 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 22 March 2011. After several months, these calculated external effective doses were 0.25-0.88 μSv h(-1) (2.2-7.6 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 29 June 2011. The present study revealed that the detected artificial radionuclides around FNPP mainly shifted to long-lived radionuclides such as radioactive caesium ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) even though current levels are decreasing gradually due to the decay of short-lived radionuclides such as (131)I, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs. Thus, radiation exposure potency still exists even though the national efforts are ongoing for reducing the annual exposure dose closer to 1 mSv, the public dose limit. Long-term environmental monitoring around FNPP contributes to radiation safety, with a reduction in unnecessary exposure to the residents.

Abstract:The majority of the area contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is covered with forests. We developed a dataset for radiocaesium (137Cs) in trees, soil, and mushrooms measured at numerous forest sites. The 137Cs activity concentration and inventory data reported in scientific journal papers written in English and Japanese, governmental reports, and governmental monitoring data on the web were collated. The ancillary information describing the forest stands were also collated, and further environmental information (e.g. climate) was derived from the other databases using longitude and latitude coordinates of the sampling locations. The database contains 8593, 4105, and 3189 entries of activity concentration data for trees, soil, and mushrooms, and 471 and 3521 entries of inventory data for trees and soil, respectively, which were collected from 2011 to 2017, and covers the entire Fukushima prefecture. The data can be used to document and understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of radiocaesium in the affected region and to aid the development and validation of models of radiocaesium dynamics in contaminated forests.

Abstract:The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, which occurred in March 2011, has released large amounts of radionuclides (such as radioiodine and radiocesium) into the atmosphere, resulting in the contamination of terrestrial and marine environments. To assess radiological and environmental effects of the FDNPP-derived radionuclides, huge amounts of radioactive monitoring activities have been conducted to environmental samples. In this paper, we review results of atmospheric radioactivity monitoring for the FDNPP accident. Learning from atmospheric radioactivity monitoring of the FDNPP accident is as follows; 1. At the initial stage of accident, large spatiotemporal variability of emitted radionuclides near the FDNPP site occurred at short (less than 1 h) time scale and small (less than 10 km) space scale due to complicated emissions of radionuclides and variable flow of Fukushima radioactive plume, 2. Chemical form of FDNPP-derived radionuclides, in which a typical example is coexistence of 137Cs-bearing submicron particles and 137Cs-bearing large hot particles in the plume, is important to have better understanding of their atmospheric behaviors as do released mechanisms and their fate in environment, 3. Atmospheric effects of the FDNPP accident continue over 8 years, in which high activity levels of the FDNPP-derived 137Cs in surface air and deposition have continued at least until the end of 2018 owing to the post-accident release and resuspension because most of the FDNPP-derived 137Cs deposited on the ground surface still remains in the soil surface as a potential source of atmospheric 137Cs.

Abstract:After the damage of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, a great number of radioactive materials were released into the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, it is necessary to research on the temporal and spatial distribution of these radionuclides. We use Princeton Ocean Model to simulate the circulation of the coast water of Fukushima NPP and obtain the concentration of caesium-137 by solving the diffusion equations. We employ the Monte Carlo N-particle(MCNP) code to assess the external doses caused by these contaminated sea water. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of volume source in MCNP code, we establish a transformation method between spot source and volume source, and determine an appropriate range of volume source. Finally, we calculate the absorbed doses of every organ/tissue and the effective dose of a human body.
Marine Radiochemistry Progress After Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident

Abstract:Because being paid close attention to environment impact from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant(FDNPP)accident,artificial radionuclides in the atmosphere,land and ocean were studied and monitored.The main nuclides detected are 131 I,137Cs,134 Cs and129I.When the concentration levels are measured,the transport path of radionuclides in the atmosphere and ocean were simulated.The results showed that controlling by climate condition,the airborne radionuclides released by FDNPP accident reached America via the Pacific,and then arrived to Europe over Atlantic,and finally transported to China.Over the globe the activity concentration of 131 I from FDNPP accident is in the order of magnitude of mBq/m3,and 0.1-1mBq/m3 for 137 Cs.The nuclides released to the sea headed eastward with the ocean current and then would circulate in the North Pacific.With mixing,the radionuclides went down to 200 mdepth,where not very far from FDNPP.In the open ocean far from FDNPP,the 137 Cs activity concentration may be in the order of magnitude of 100Bq/m3,but most of waters is in the Bq/m3 level,only slightly higher than background.

Abstract:The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, Japan, released the largest quantity of radionuclides into the terrestrial environment since the 1986 accident at Chernobyl. This accident resulted in 2.7 PBq of radiocaesium (137Cs) contaminated forests, agricultural lands, grasslands and urban areas, which subsequently migrated through soil and waterways in the Fukushima Prefecture. In this Review, we synthesize knowledge regarding the deposition, distribution and transport of fallout radionuclides, especially 137Cs, in the terrestrial environment after the FDNPP accident, which were revealed by extensive and continuous environmental monitoring. Anthropogenic activities, high run-off and steep topography led to a rapid decline in the activity concentration of 137Cs in soils and rivers, especially in the first year after the accident. The decline in exposed radioactivity was notably faster than that seen after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, likely related to differences in geography and climate, and the intensive remediation activities in Fukushima. However, forests in Fukushima have retained a notable amount of 137Cs in the upper centimetres of soil and could persist as a source of 137Cs into rivers. For continued understanding of both natural and fallout radionuclide behaviour in the environment, there must be long-term accessibility of the data collected in response to the FDNPP accident.

Abstract:Abstract135Cs/137Cs is a potential tracer for radiocesium source identification. However, due to the challenge to measure 135Cs, there were no 135Cs data available for Japanese environmental samples before the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. It was only 3 years after the accident that limited 135Cs values could be measured in heavily contaminated environmental samples. In the present study, activities of 134Cs, 135Cs, and 137Cs, along with their ratios in 67 soil and plant samples heavily and lightly contaminated by the FDNPP accident were measured by combining γ spectrometry with ICP-MS/MS. The arithmetic means of the 134Cs/137Cs activity ratio (1.033 ± 0.006) and 135Cs/137Cs atom ratio (0.334 ± 0.005) (decay corrected to March 11, 2011), from old leaves of plants collected immediately after the FDNPP accident, were confirmed to represent the FDNPP derived radiocesium signature. Subsequently, for the first time, trace 135Cs amounts before the FDNPP accident were deduced according to the contribution of global and FDNPP accident-derived fallout. Apart from two soil samples with a tiny global fallout contribution, contributions of global fallout radiocesium in other soil samples were observed to be 0.338%–52.6%. The obtained 135Cs/137Cs database will be useful for its application as a geochemical tracer in the future.

Reconstruction of radiocesium levels in sediment off Fukushima: Simulation analysis of bioavailability using parameters derived from observed 137Cs concentrations

Abstract:Radiocesium was released to the North Pacific coastal waters by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (1FNPP) of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in March 2011. Since the radiocesium in the sediment off Fukushima was suggested as a possible source for the transfer of this radionuclide through the benthic food chain, we conducted numerical simulations of 137Cs in sediments off the Fukushima coast by using a model which incorporates dynamic transfer processes between seawater and the labile and refractory fractions in sediment particles. This model reproduced the measured temporal changes of 137Cs concentration in seabed surface sediment off Fukusima coasts, by normalizing the radiocsium transfer between seawater and sediment according to the particle diameter sizes. We found that the 137Cs level in sediment decreased by desorption during the first several months after the accident, followed by a reduction in the labile fraction until the end of 2012. The apparent decrease of the total radiocesium level in surface sediment was estimated to occur at rates of approximately 0.2 y-1 within a 20 km distance from the 1FNPP. The comparison of 137Cs level decreases in the demersal fish and the simulated temporal labile fraction in fine sediment demonstrated that the consideration of radiocesium transfer via sediment is important for determining the 137Cs depuration mechanism in some demersal fish.
Groundwater age and mixing process for evaluation of radionuclide impact on water resources following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident

Abstract:Radionuclide contamination of groundwater causes critical impacts on water resources, human lives, and ecosystems. The intrusion of radionuclides into the groundwater flow system in Fukushima, Japan, could be illuminated by determining groundwater age and mixing processes. To do this, periodical field surveys were conducted in catchments contaminated by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Sampling began in May 2011, which was 2 months after the disaster, and continued through June 2012. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs), tritium, and oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes were used as environmental tracers. The observed tritium concentrations suggested that the water contained accident-derived radionuclides that exceeded the natural background baseline. Groundwater ages in the selected two headwater catchments were estimated to be between 10 and 26 years by combined use of multiple CFCs concentrations. In addition, the governing groundwater flow system was mostly approximated by a piston flow model; however, modern water fraction was also suggested based on the relationship between CFC-11 and CFC-12. The estimated water age and isotopic signals among stream water, spring water, and groundwater revealed that the intrusion of radionuclides into the groundwater was caused by the mixing between groundwater and modern water sources such as soil water and precipitation with relatively high radionuclide concentrations. This mixing was facilitated by a weathered and fractured granite bedrock and a thin unsaturated subsurface layer in the study area. Continued long-term monitoring of radionuclides in the groundwater will be necessary for water resources management in the future. CAPSULE: Radionuclide intrusion into the groundwater is related to the mixing between radionuclide-poor groundwater and modern water with relatively high radionuclide concentration.
SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF THE RADIOACTIVE MONITORING DATA IN THE FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Abstract:A large amount of radioactive materials was released into the atmosphere during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP1) accident in March 2011 and the gamma dose rates measured by the monitoring sites in FDNPP1 greatly increased accordingly. The atmospheric dispersion simulations of the radioactive source term of FDNPP1 have been made in many researches, but the near-field radiation dose monitoring data in FDNPP1 were rarely analyzed. In this study, sensitivity analysis of the radioactive monitoring data in FDNPP1 is carried out with atmospheric dispersion simulations coupling the Risø Mesoscale Puff model (RIMPUFF) and different source term patterns. The simulation results show that the temporal profiles of the near-field radiation dose monitoring data are determined by several different factors in different ways, among which the meteorological data are the most determinant factors for the peak position and amplitude of the temporal profiles of the dose monitoring data. The trajectory of the radioactive plume and the half-life of radionuclides determine the declining of these peaks. The baseline of the dose monitoring data is determined by the deposition process and it is most sensitive to the composition of deposited radionuclides.
