Abstract:Six years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, data for 236U and 236U/238U have remained limited to a few heavily contaminated samples. In the present study, activities of 236U, 239Pu, and 240Pu, along with other U isotopes in 46 soil samples both heavily and lightly contaminated by this accident were measured by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and triple-quadrupole ICP-MS. The 236U activities and 236U/238U atom ratios in these soil samples were in the range of (0.469–24.4) × 10−5 Bq kg−1 and ((0.099–1.35) × 10−7), respectively. Higher 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.245–0.312) and 238Pu/239+240Pu activity ratios (0.859–1.62) indicated Pu contamination originated from this accident and global fallout in some samples. For those soil samples along with black substances collected along roads in Fukushima Prefecture, high linear correlations were presented between 236U activities and 239+240Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.755, p < 0.01), and between 236U activities and 238Pu activities (Pearson’s r = 0.844, p < 0.01). The analysis of these soil samples confirmed the release of 236U, although in trace amounts, during the FDNPP accident.

Abstract:Concentrations of the radionuclides, U, Pu, and Cs were measured in water samples (10-20 L) to study analyte dispersion and migration following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. A total of 8 water samples including oceanic water and paddy-field water were collected in the vicinity of the plant. Determinations of U, Pu and Cs isotopes were performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and γ-ray spectrometry. The 236U/238U atom ratio was in the range 1.83-8.20 × 10-9 for fresh water and around 0.57 × 10-9 for seawater while the concentration of 236U was about 104-105 and 106 atoms/kg, respectively. Plutonium (239,240Pu) was detected in one riverine sample and the marine samples at very low levels and with large uncertainty. The concentrations of 137Cs in fresh riverine samples were 0.02-0.46 Bq/kg which are more than three orders of magnitude larger than the global fallout level. As for seawater samples within 80 km offshore of the FDNPP, the concentrations of 137Cs were 10-20 times higher than that of the Japan Sea water. Also 134Cs and 137Cs were of similar concentrations in all samples. The results show that volatile and refractory nuclides such as Cs, U and Pu exist in the dissolved phase, which can be readily assimilated by plants/humans. However the environmental impact of Pu and U in the vicinity of the FDNPP is considered to be low in comparison to that of the volatile radionuclide Cs.

Abstract:The dispersion timeline and the specific ratio characterization of airborne radionuclides released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident were investigated based on an analysis of the monitoring data obtained from regional stations and radionuclide stations of the International Monitoring System for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The comprehensive temporal sequence of airborne radionuclide arrival time at different sites was given, including xenon, iodine, and cesium isotopes, which could be used to validate and evaluate atmospheric transport modeling. Based on the decay time estimation method, the release time and process of radionuclides were calculated and analyzed through activity ratios of I-133 to I-131, Cs-136 to Cs-137, and Cs-134 to Cs-137. It indicated that radioiodine isotopes leaked from the reactors in the early stage after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, and there were two sources which leaked radiocesium, one is units 1, 2, and 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and the other is the spent fuel pools with a high possibility. Generally, this study provides some valuable findings and information for further evaluation of the accident and relevant research work.
Inverse modeling of the 137Cs source term of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident constrained by a deposition map monitored by aircraft

Abstract:The amount of 137Cs released by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident of 11 March 2011 was inversely estimated by integrating an atmospheric dispersion model, an a priori source term, and map of deposition recorded by aircraft. An a posteriori source term refined finer (hourly) variations comparing with the a priori term, and estimated 137Cs released 11 March to 2 April to be 8.12 PBq. Although time series of the a posteriori source term was generally similar to those of the a priori source term, notable modifications were found in the periods when the a posteriori source term was well-constrained by the observations. Spatial pattern of 137Cs deposition with the a posteriori source term showed better agreement with the 137Cs deposition monitored by aircraft. The a posteriori source term increased 137Cs deposition in the Naka-dori region (the central part of Fukushima Prefecture) by 32.9%, and considerably improved the underestimated a priori 137Cs deposition. Observed values of deposition measured at 16 stations and surface atmospheric concentrations collected on a filter tape of suspended particulate matter were used for validation of the a posteriori results. A great improvement was found in surface atmospheric concentration on 15 March; the a posteriori source term reduced root mean square error, normalized mean error, and normalized mean bias by 13.4, 22.3, and 92.0% for the hourly values, respectively. However, limited improvements were observed in some periods and areas due to the difficulty in simulating accurate wind fields and the lack of the observational constraints.

Abstract:Abstract135Cs/137Cs is a potential tracer for radiocesium source identification. However, due to the challenge to measure 135Cs, there were no 135Cs data available for Japanese environmental samples before the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. It was only 3 years after the accident that limited 135Cs values could be measured in heavily contaminated environmental samples. In the present study, activities of 134Cs, 135Cs, and 137Cs, along with their ratios in 67 soil and plant samples heavily and lightly contaminated by the FDNPP accident were measured by combining γ spectrometry with ICP-MS/MS. The arithmetic means of the 134Cs/137Cs activity ratio (1.033 ± 0.006) and 135Cs/137Cs atom ratio (0.334 ± 0.005) (decay corrected to March 11, 2011), from old leaves of plants collected immediately after the FDNPP accident, were confirmed to represent the FDNPP derived radiocesium signature. Subsequently, for the first time, trace 135Cs amounts before the FDNPP accident were deduced according to the contribution of global and FDNPP accident-derived fallout. Apart from two soil samples with a tiny global fallout contribution, contributions of global fallout radiocesium in other soil samples were observed to be 0.338%–52.6%. The obtained 135Cs/137Cs database will be useful for its application as a geochemical tracer in the future.

Abstract:To evaluate the environmental contamination and contributory external exposure after the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP), the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in soil samples from each area were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Six artificial radionuclides ((131)I, (134)Cs, (137)Cs, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs) were detected in soil samples around FNPP. Calculated external effective doses from artificial radionuclide contamination in soil samples around FNPP were 1.9-2.9 μSv h(-1) (8.7-17.8 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 22 March 2011. After several months, these calculated external effective doses were 0.25-0.88 μSv h(-1) (2.2-7.6 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 29 June 2011. The present study revealed that the detected artificial radionuclides around FNPP mainly shifted to long-lived radionuclides such as radioactive caesium ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) even though current levels are decreasing gradually due to the decay of short-lived radionuclides such as (131)I, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs. Thus, radiation exposure potency still exists even though the national efforts are ongoing for reducing the annual exposure dose closer to 1 mSv, the public dose limit. Long-term environmental monitoring around FNPP contributes to radiation safety, with a reduction in unnecessary exposure to the residents.

Abstract:Based on periodically performed radioactivity measurements on soil samples in the site of Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Station, activity ratios to 137Cs of fission product and heavy nuclides were obtained for Sr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Ag, Te, I, Ba, La, Pu, Am, and Cm isotopes. By exponentially fitting or averaging, the activity ratios at the core shutdown were estimated. Using correlations of activity ratios of 134Cs to 137Cs, and 238Pu to the sum of 239Pu and 240Pu against fuel burnup, burnup of the fuel sourcing the deposited activity of the soil was estimated. The activity ratios to 137Cs of each nuclide on the deposited activity were divided by those calculated on the fuel at the shutdown to obtain the deposited activity fraction of each nuclide as a relative value to 137Cs, which also corresponds to the deposited fraction of each element as a relative value to Cs. The obtained deposited fractions relative to Cs are the orders of 10−4 to 10−2 for Sr, 10−5 to 10−3 for Nb, 10−2 to 10−1 for Mo, 1 to 10 for I, 10−3 to 10−2 for Ba, 10−2 for La, 10−6 to 10−3 for Pu, 10−6 to 10−4 for Am, and 10−7 to 10−5 for Cm. The deposited fractions for Tc, Ag, and Te were not estimated due to the lack of the calculated inventories in the fuel for the relevant measured radioactive nuclides.

Abstract:Radiocesium isotopes were released into the environment in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, which resulted from the massive Tohoku earthquake in March 2011. Lake Inba is located in Chiba Prefecture about 200 km from the FDNPP site and the lake was contaminated by radioactivity from the accident. The present work was carried out in order to investigate the vertical distributions and accumulations of radiocesium and Pu in sediment cores collected during 2011-2015, and to study the migration behaviors of radiocesium and Pu isotopes in the sediments. The observed Cs-134/Cs-137 activity ratios in the core samples were approximately 1 (decay-corrected to 15 March, 2011), suggesting that sediment samples were contaminated by the FDNPP-released radiocesium. Compared with radiocesium inventories in soil in the area surroundihg the Lake Inba, the calculated higher radiocesium inventories of the collected sediment cores indicated that most of the radiocesium was subsequently accumulated in the lake, and that the radiocesium input by atmospheric deposition and input from surrounding soil were greater than the output of the radiocesium. The Pu239+240 activities in the sediments were all within the background level seen before the accident. The atom ratios of Pu-240/Pu-239 ranged from 0.175 to 0.210, suggesting that Pu originated from global stratospheric fallout rather than from the FDNPP accident. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Abstract Spherical radioactive caesium (Cs)-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were emitted during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March, 2011. The emission source (timing) and formation process of these particles remain unclear. In this study, the isotopic ratios of uranium ( 235 U and 238 U) and caesium ( 133 Cs, 134 Cs, 135 Cs, and 137 Cs) isotopes in the five spherical CsMPs (ca. 2 μm in size) sampled at 50 km west of the FDNPP were determined using secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation-ICPMS, respectively. Results showed that the 235 U/ 238 U ratios of CsMPs were homogeneous (1.93 ± 0.03, N = 4) and close to those estimated for the fuel cores in units 2 and 3, and that the Cs isotopic ratios of CsMP were identical to those of units 2 and 3. These results indicated that U and Cs in the spherical CsMPs originated exclusively from the fuel melt in the reactors. Based on a thorough review of literatures related to the detailed atmospheric releases of radionuclides, the flow of plumes from the FDNPP reactor units during the accident and the U and Cs isotopic ratio results in this study, we hereby suggest that the spherical CsMPs originate only from the fuel in unit 2 on the night of 14 March to the morning of 15 March. The variation range of the analysed 235 U/ 238 U isotopic ratios for the four spherical particles was extremely narrow. Thus, U may have been homogenised in the source through the formation of fuel melt, which ultimately evaporating and taken into CsMPs in the reactor and was released from the unit 2.

Abstract:The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, Japan, released the largest quantity of radionuclides into the terrestrial environment since the 1986 accident at Chernobyl. This accident resulted in 2.7 PBq of radiocaesium (137Cs) contaminated forests, agricultural lands, grasslands and urban areas, which subsequently migrated through soil and waterways in the Fukushima Prefecture. In this Review, we synthesize knowledge regarding the deposition, distribution and transport of fallout radionuclides, especially 137Cs, in the terrestrial environment after the FDNPP accident, which were revealed by extensive and continuous environmental monitoring. Anthropogenic activities, high run-off and steep topography led to a rapid decline in the activity concentration of 137Cs in soils and rivers, especially in the first year after the accident. The decline in exposed radioactivity was notably faster than that seen after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, likely related to differences in geography and climate, and the intensive remediation activities in Fukushima. However, forests in Fukushima have retained a notable amount of 137Cs in the upper centimetres of soil and could persist as a source of 137Cs into rivers. For continued understanding of both natural and fallout radionuclide behaviour in the environment, there must be long-term accessibility of the data collected in response to the FDNPP accident.

Abstract:Major contaminants from venting and hydrogen explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors between 12 and 15 March 2011 were transported northwestward and deposited on soil and plants via precipitation. Surface soils and plant leaves were sampled at 64 sites in the Fukushima Prefecture. The highest concentrations of (134)Cs (84.4 kBq kg(-1)) and (137)Cs (82.0 kBq kg(-1)) in surface soils were observed at Nagadoro in Iidate village located 32 km northwest from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Furthermore, (131)I, (129)Te, (129 m)Te, (110 m)Ag and (140)La were detected in the same samples. Outer surface of plant leaves, such as bamboo, cabbage and grasses were highly contaminated at the high-dose rate areas of Tsushima and Minami-Tsushima in Namie town. Mugwort leaves that grew after the pollution event had extremely low concentration of radionuclides; however, the plant/soil radiocaesium ratio was 0.023 ± 0.006. It is anticipated that decomposition of fallen leaves will promote recycling of radionuclides in the environment.

Abstract:Quantitative characteristics of dissolved and particulate radiocesium wash-off from contaminated watersheds after the FDNPP accident are calculated based on published monitoring data. Comparative analysis is provided for radiocesium wash-off parameters and distribution coefficients, Kd, between suspended matter and water in rivers and surface runoff on Fukushima and Chernobyl contaminated areas for the first years after the accidents. It was found that radiocesium distribution coefficient in Fukushima rivers is essentially higher (1-2 orders of magnitude) than corresponding values for rivers and surface runoff within the Chernobyl zone. This can be associated with two factors: first, the high fraction of clays in the predominant soils and sediments of the Fukushima area and accordingly a higher value of the radiocesium Interception Potential, RIP, in general, and secondly the presence of water insoluble glassy particles containing radiocesium in the accidental fallout at Fukushima. It was found also that normalized dissolved wash-off coefficients for Fukushima catchments are 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than corresponding values for the Chernobyl zone. Normalized particulate wash-off coefficients are comparable for Fukushima and Chernobyl. Results of the investigation of radiocesium's ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) vertical distribution in soils of the close-in area of the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP - Okuma town and floodplain of the Niida river are presented. The radiocesium migration in undisturbed forest and grassland soils at Fukushima contaminated area has been shown to be faster as compared to the Chernobyl 30-km zone during the first three years after the accidents. This may be associated with higher annual precipitation (by about 2.5 times) in Fukushima as compared to the Chernobyl zone, as well as the differences in the soil characteristics and temperature regime throughout a year. Investigation and analysis of Fukushima's radiocesium distribution in soils of Niida river catchment revealed accumulation zones of contaminated sediments on its floodplain. Average sediment deposition rates varied from 0.3 to 3.3 cm/year.

[Comparative analysis of the radionuclide composition in fallout after the Chernobyl and the Fukushima accidents]

Abstract:The nuclear accident occurred at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) (March 11, 2011) similarly to the accident at the Chernobyl NPP (April 26, 1986) is related to the level 7 of the INES. It is of interest to make an analysis of the radionuclide composition of the fallout following the both accidents. The results of the spectrometric measurements were used in that comparative analysis. Two areas following the Chernobyl accident were considered: (1) the near zone of the fallout - the Belarusian part of the central spot extended up to 60 km around the Chernobyl NPS and (2) the far zone of the fallout--the "Gomel-Mogilev" spot centered 200 km to the north-northeast of the damaged reactor. In the case of Fukushima accident the near zone up to about 60 km considered. The comparative analysis has been done with respect to refractory radionuclides (95Zr, 95Nb, 141Ce, 144Ce), as well as to the intermediate and volatile radionuclides 103Ru, 106Ru, 131I, 134Cs, 137Cs, 140La, 140Ba and the results of such a comparison have been discussed. With respect to exposure to the public the most important radionuclides are 131I and 137Cs. For the both accidents the ratios of 131I/137Cs in the considered soil samples are in the similar ranges: (3-50) for the Chernobyl samples and (5-70) for the Fukushima samples. Similarly to the Chernobyl accident a clear tendency that the ratio of 131I/137Cs in the fallout decreases with the increase of the ground deposition density of 137Cs within the trace related to a radioactive cloud has been identified for the Fukushima accident. It looks like this is a universal tendency for the ratio of 131I/137Cs versus the 137Cs ground deposition density in the fallout along the trace of a radioactive cloud as a result of a heavy accident at the NPP with radionuclides releases into the environment. This tendency is important for an objective reconstruction of 131I fallout based on the results of 137Cs measurements of soil samples carried out at late dates after the Fukushima accident.

Abstract:The actinide plutonium (Pu) isotopes and the fission product radiocesium isotopes released in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) nuclear accident have drawn scientific attention in post-accident studies. In this chapter, studies that trace the Pu and radiocesium isotopes released from the FDNPP accident into the environment to ensure better nuclear emergency preparedness for the future were summarized. The characteristic Pu-240/Pu-239, Pu-241/Pu-239, and Cs-135/Cs-137 atom ratios of the FDNPP accident were determined to be 0.323-0.330, 0.128-0.135, and 0.333-0.343, respectively, which were distinct from those of global fallout. While Pu and radiocesium isotopic signatures from the accident were detected in the terrestrial environment, the release of Pu to the marine environment, if any, was negligible. And no data for Cs-135 in the marine environment has been reported yet.

Abstract:The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident led to the release of large amounts of radionuclides into the atmosphere as well as direct discharges into the sea. In contrast to the intensive studies on the distribution of the released high volatility fission products, such as 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs, similar studies of the actinides, especially the Pu isotopes, are limited. To obtain the vertical distribution of Pu isotopes in marine sediments and to better assess the possible contamination of Pu from the FDNPP accident in the marine environment, we determined the activities of 239+240Pu and 241Pu as well as the atom ratios of 240Pu/239Pu and 241Pu/239Pu in sediment core samples collected in the western North Pacific off Fukushima from July 2011 to July 2012. We also measured surface sediment samples collected from seven Japanese estuaries before the FNDPP accident to establish the comprehensive background baseline data. The observed results of both the Pu activities and the Pu atom ratios for the sediments in the western North Pacific were comparable to the baseline data, suggesting that the FDNPP accident did not cause detectable Pu contamination to the studied regions prior to the sampling time. The Pu isotopes in the western North Pacific 30 km off the Fukushima coast originated from global fallout and Pacific Proving Ground close-in fallout.
Utilization of 134Cs/137Cs in the environment to identify the reactor units that caused atmospheric releases during the Fukushima Daiichi accident

Abstract:The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactor units that generated large amounts of airborne discharges during the period of March 12–21, 2011 were identified individually by analyzing the combination of measured 134Cs/137Cs depositions on ground surfaces and atmospheric transport and deposition simulations. Because the values of 134Cs/137Cs are different in reactor units owing to fuel burnup differences, the 134Cs/137Cs ratio measured in the environment was used to determine which reactor unit ultimately contaminated a specific area. Atmospheric dispersion model simulations were used for predicting specific areas contaminated by each dominant release. Finally, by comparing the results from both sources, the specific reactor units that yielded the most dominant atmospheric release quantities could be determined. The major source reactor units were Unit 1 in the afternoon of March 12, 2011, Unit 2 during the period from the late night of March 14 to the morning of March 15, 2011. These results corresponded to those assumed in our previous source term estimation studies. Furthermore, new findings suggested that the major source reactors from the evening of March 15, 2011 were Units 2 and 3 and that the dominant source reactor on March 20, 2011 temporally changed from Unit 3 to Unit 2.

Distribution and fate of 129I in the seabed sediment off Fukushima

Abstract:In this study, seabed sediment was collected from 26 stations located within 160 km from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) during the 2 years which followed the FDNPP accident of March 2011 and the concentrations of 129I and 137Cs were measured. By comparing the distribution of these two radionuclides with respect to their different geochemical behaviors in the environment, the transport of accident-derived radionuclides near the seafloor is discussed. The concentration of 129I in seabed sediment recovered from offshore Fukushima in 2011 ranged between 0.02 and 0.45 mBq kg-1, with 129I/137Cs activity ratios of (1.9 ± 0.5) × 10-6 Bq Bq-1. The initial deposition of 129I to the seafloor in the study area was 0.36 ± 0.13 GBq, and the general distribution of sedimentary 129I was established within 6 months after the accident. Although iodine is a biophilic element, the accident-derived 129I negligibly affects the benthic ecosystem. Until October 2013, a slight increase in activity of 129I in the surface sediment along the shelf-edge region (bottom depth: 200-400 m) was observed, despite that such a trend was not observed for 137Cs. The preferential increase of the 129I concentrations in the shelf-edge sediments was presumed to be affected by the re-deposition in the shelf-edge sediments of 129I desorbed from the contaminated coastal sediment. The results obtained from this study indicate that 129I/137Cs in marine particles is a useful indicator for tracking the secondary transport of accident-derived materials, particularly biophilic radionuclides, from the coast to offshore areas.
