Abstract:Abelian and center gauges are considered in continuum Yang-Mills theory in order to detect the magnetic monopole and center vortex content of gauge field configurations. Specifically we examine the Laplacian Abelian and center gauges, which are free of Gribov copies, as well as the center gauge analog of the (Abelian) Polyakov gauge. In particular, we study meron, instanton and instanton-anti-instanton field configurations in these gauges and determine their monopole and vortex content. While a single instanton does not give rise to a center vortex, we find center vortices for merons. Furthermore we provide evidence, that merons can be interpreted as intersection points of center vortices. For the instanton-anti-instanton pair, we find a center vortex enclosing their centers, which carries two monopole loops.

Abstract:The scattering of electrically charged fermions on magnetic monopole leads to the Callan-Rubakov problem. We discuss some aspects of this problem for Abelian gauge theories with chiral fermions in a Dirac monopole background. In some cases, it is possible to embed the theory in a non-Abelian gauge theory where the monopole is regularized as a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. One theory of this kind is the $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theory with fermions in the symmetric, anti-antisymmetric and anti-fundamental representations also called "$\psi \chi \eta$" model, with an extra adjoint scalar that induces the Abelianization of the gauge group. We examine this model in detail and provide a possible solution for the condensates around the monopole, the symmetry preserving boundary conditions, and discuss the particle scattering problem.

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Abstract:Non-Abelian gauge fields having a line-singularity of the Dirac type lead us to violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identity. The violation as an operator is equivalent to violation of Abelian-like Bianchi identities corresponding to eight Abelian-like conserved magnetic monopole currents of the Dirac type in $SU(3)$ QCD. It is very interesting to study if these new Abelian-like monopoles are responsible for color confinement in the continuum $SU(3)$ QCD, since any reliable candidate of color magnetic monopoles is not known yet. If these new Abelian-like monopoles exist in the continuum limit, the Abelian dual Meissner effect occurs, so that the linear part of the static potential between a quark-antiquark pair is reproduced fully by those of Abelian and monopole static potentials. These phenomena are called here as perfect Abelian and monopole dominances. It is shown that the perfect Abelian dominance is reproduced fairly well, whereas the perfect monopole dominance seems to be realized for large $\beta$ when use is made of the smooth lattice configurations in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge. Making use of a block spin transformation with respect to monopoles, the scaling behaviors of the monopole density and the effective monopole action are studied. Both monopole density and the effective monopole action which are usually a two-point function of $\beta$ and the number of times $n$ of the block spin transformation are a function of $b=na(\beta)$ alone for $n=1,2,3,4,6,8,12$. If the scaling behavior is seen for up to larger $n$, it shows the existence of the continuum limit, since $a(\beta)\to 0$ when $n\to\infty$ for fixed $b=na(\beta)$. Along with the previous results without any gauge fixing, these new results obtained in MA gauge suggest that the new Abelian-like monopoles play the role of color confinement in $SU(3)$ QCD.

Abstract:A gauge transformation provided by the three eigenfunctions of $\B^a(x) \cdot \B^b(x)$ (where $\B^a(x)$, with a=1,2,3, are the non-Abelian magnetic fields) exposes the topological configurations of the Yang-Mills fields. In particular, it gives Dirac monopoles interacting with `photons' and massless charged vector bosons. A magnetic dipole field at each monopole corresponds to infinitesimal translation of the monopole, and provides the functional measure a la collective coordinates. The grand canonical partition function of the monopole plasma is exactly equivalent to a local field theory with certain scalar fields interacting with the Yang-Mills fields. This integrates topological degrees of freedom with perturbation theory.

Abstract:Because global topological properties are robust against local perturbations, understanding and manipulating the topological properties of physical systems is essential in advancing quantum science and technology. For quantum computation, topologically protected qubit operations can increase computational robustness, and for metrology the quantized Hall effect directly defines the von Klitzing constant. Fundamentally, topological order is generated by singularities called topological defects in extended spaces, and is quantified in terms of Chern numbers, each of which measures different sorts of fields traversing surfaces enclosing these topological singularities. Here, inspired by high energy theories, we describe our synthesis and characterization of a singularity present in non-Abelian gauge theories - a Yang monopole - using atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a five-dimensional space, and quantify the monopole in terms of Chern numbers measured on enclosing manifolds. While the well-known 1st Chern number vanished, the 2nd Chern number, measured for the first time in any physical settings, did not. By displacing the manifold, we then observed a phase transition from "topological" to "trivial" as the monopole left the manifold.

Abstract:Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles is shown to be equivalent to Maxwell theory coupled to 2-form gauge fields so that it has a local 1-form symmetry, with the 2-form gauge fields given in terms of the 2-form current densities associated with the Dirac strings. The field equations of Dirac's theory do not depend on the positions of the Dirac strings provided that they do not intersect the worldlines of any electrically charged particles; this constraint is called the Dirac veto. It is shown that Dirac's action is independent of the positions of the Dirac strings and that this corresponds a local 1-form symmetry. The electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries have a mixed anomaly, and the Dirac veto is shown to correspond to a restriction to gauge transformations for which the anomaly vanishes. The extension to $p$-form gauge fields in d-dimensions coupled to charged branes is discussed, together with the possibility of cancelling the anomaly by embedding in a higher-dimensional theory and so avoiding the veto.

Abstract:We prove Abelian magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension of QCD. Abelian and monopole dominance in low energy physics of QCD has been confirmed for various quantities by recent Monte Carlo simulations of lattice gauge theory. In order to prove this dominance, we use the reformulation of continuum Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge as a deformation of a topological field theory of magnetic monopoles, which was proposed in the previous article by the author. This reformulation provides an efficient way for incorporating the magnetic monopole configuration as a topological non-trivial configuration in the functional integral. We derive a version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem and use it to estimate the expectation value of the Wilson loop. This clearly exhibits the role played by the magnetic monopole as an origin of the Berry phase in the calculation of the Wilson loop in the manifestly gauge invariant manner. We show that the string tension derived from the diagonal (abelian) Wilson loop in the topological field theory (studied in the previous article) converges to that of the full non-Abelian Wilson loop in the limit of large Wilson loop. Therefore, within the above reformulation of QCD, this result (together with the previous result) completes the proof of quark confinement in QCD based on the criterion of the area law of the full non-Abelian Wilson loop.

Abstract:The reports in this monograph have shown great enthusiasm and exuberance for the unification of various interactions through the concept of gauge fields. I would like to emphasize a point that has not yet been explicitly stated by any of the other authors: gauge fields are deeply related to some profoundly beautiful ideas of contemporary mathematics, ideas that are the driving forces of part of the mathematics of the last 40 years. Recalling the relationship between physics and mathematics in earlier periods, general relativity and Riemannian geometry, quantum mechanics and Hilbert space, it is all too obvious that physicists may again be zeroing in on a fundamental new secret of nature.

Abstract:We have given a new description of the lattice Yang-Mills theory a la Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov, which has enabled us to confirm in a gauge-independent manner "Abelian"-dominance and magnetic-monopole dominance in the Wilson loop average, yielding a gauge-independent dual superconductor picture for quark confinement. In particular, we have given a new procedure (called reduction) for obtaining a gauge-independent magnetic monopole from a given Yang-Mills field. In this talk, we demonstrate how some of known topological configurations in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory such as merons and instantons generate closed loops of magnetic-monopole current as the quark confiner, both of which are characterized by the gauge-invariant topological index, topological charge (density) and magnetic charge (density), respectively. We also try to detect which type of topological configurations exist in the lattice data involving magnetic-monopole loops generated by Monte Carlo simulation. Here we apply a new geometrical algorithm based on "computational homology" to discriminating each closed loop from clusters of magnetic-monopole current, since the magnetic-monopole current on a lattice is integer valued.

Abstract:These are expanded notes of lectures given at the Advanced Summer School on Modern Mathematical Physics (JINR Dubna, July 2005) and at the 8th International School-Seminar ``The actual problems of microworld physics 2005'' (Gomel-Dubna, August 2005). I review classical monopole solutions of the SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The first part is a pedagogical introduction into to the theory of non-Abelian SU(2) monopoles. In the second part I discuss a particular case of SU(3) theories containing different limits of symmetry breaking. It turns out that the multimonopole configurations are natural in a model with the gauge group of higher rank. Here I discuss fundamental and composite monopoles and consider the limiting situation of the massless states. In the last part I briefly discuss construction of the $N = 2$ SU(2) supersymmetric monopoles and some of the basic properties which are connected with the field theoretical aspects of these classical solutions.

Abstract:We introduce a topological field theory with a Bogomol'nyi structure permitting BPS electric, magnetic and dyonic monopoles. From the general arguments given by Montonen and Olive the particle spectrum and mass compare favourably with that of the intermediate vector bosons. In most, if not in all, of its essential features the topological field theory introduced here provides an example of a dual field theory, the existence of which was conjectured by Montonen and Olive.

Abstract:In this paper we study the interaction between magnetic monopoles and massless fermions. In the low energy limit, the monopole's magnetic field polarizes the fermions into purely in-going and out-going modes. Unitarity requires that the UV fermion-monopole interaction leads to non-trivial IR boundary conditions that relate the in-going to out-going modes. These non-trivial boundary conditions lead to what is known as the Callan-Rubakov effect. Here we derive the effective boundary condition by explicitly integrating out the UV degrees of freedom for the general class of spherically symmetric $SU(N)$ monopoles coupled to massless fermions of arbitrary representation. We then show that the boundary conditions preserve continuous symmetries without ABJ-type anomalies. As an application we explicitly derive the boundary conditions for the stable, spherically symmetric monopoles associated to the $SU(5)$ Georgi-Glashow model and comment on the relation to baryon number violation.

Abstract:It will be described how to uniquely fix the gauge using Coulomb gauge fixing, avoiding the problem of Gribov copies. The fundamental modular domain, which represents a one-to-one representation of the set of gauge invariant degrees of freedom, is a bounded convex subset of the trans- verse gauge fields. Boundary identifications are the only remnants of the Gribov copies, and carry all the information about the topology of the Yang-Mills configuration space. Conversely, the known topology can be shown to imply that (on a set of measure zero on the boundary) some points of the boundary coincide with the Gribov horizon. For the low-lying energies, wavefunctionals can be shown to spread out "across" certain parts of these boundaries. This is how the topology of Yang-Mills configuration space has an essential influence on the low-lying spectrum, in a situation where these non- perturbative effects are not exponentially suppressed. This write-up is a short summary, with adequate references, where details on most of the material I have presented can be found. However, not published before, is a new observation concerning Henyey's gauge copies.

Abstract:We discuss the Abelian and non-Abelian monopoles which could exist in condensed matters. We show how the Dirac monopole can be regularized by the charge screening, and argue that the Dirac monopole of mass of hundred meVs could exist in dielectric condensed matters. Moreover, we generalize this result to non-Abelian condensed matters to show the existence of the non-Abelian monopole configuration in two-gap condensed matters, and present explicit monopole solutions.
