Abstract:These are expanded notes of lectures given at the Advanced Summer School on Modern Mathematical Physics (JINR Dubna, July 2005) and at the 8th International School-Seminar ``The actual problems of microworld physics 2005'' (Gomel-Dubna, August 2005). I review classical monopole solutions of the SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The first part is a pedagogical introduction into to the theory of non-Abelian SU(2) monopoles. In the second part I discuss a particular case of SU(3) theories containing different limits of symmetry breaking. It turns out that the multimonopole configurations are natural in a model with the gauge group of higher rank. Here I discuss fundamental and composite monopoles and consider the limiting situation of the massless states. In the last part I briefly discuss construction of the $N = 2$ SU(2) supersymmetric monopoles and some of the basic properties which are connected with the field theoretical aspects of these classical solutions.
Monopole-vortex continuity of ${\mathcal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R}^2 \times S^1 \times S^1$ with 't Hooft twist

Abstract:We study ${\mathcal N} = 1$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on $\mathbb{R}^2\times (S^1)_3\times (S^1)_4$ with the 't Hooft twist. The theory becomes weakly coupled if the length $L_4$ of $(S^1)_4$ is sufficiently small, $NL_4\Lambda\ll 1$. We explore the nonperturbative dynamics at the weak-coupling regime by changing the size of $L_3$ and uncover how $3$d monopole/bion-based effective theory for $L_3\gg L_4$ is related to the $2$d vortex-based theory for $L_3\approx L_4$. The highlights of our results are (1) the smooth ``weak-weak" continuity of the vacuum structure and gluino condensate during the $3$d-$2$d dimensional reduction, (2) the crossover of Wilson loop behavior from the area law in $3$d to the perimeter law in $2$d via a ``double-string" picture, (3) the role of mass deformation in breaking discrete chiral symmetry and restoring the area law in $2$d, and (4) the microscopic investigation of bions during the reduction from $3$d to $2$d and the cancellation of the vacuum energy due to the hidden topological angle. We also discuss the generalization of our results for (1)--(3) from $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM to QCD with adjoint quarks.

Abstract:The presence of magnetic monopole like excitations of nonabelian varieties is one of the subtlest consequences of spontaneously broken gauge symmetries. Important hints about their quantum mechanical properties, which remained long mysterious, are coming from a detailed knowledge of the dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories which has become available recently. These developments might shed light on the problem of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in QCD. We discuss here some beautiful features of vortex-monopole systems, in which dual nonabelian transformations among monopoles are generated by the nonabelian vortex moduli.

Supersymmetric Tools in Yang-Mills Theories at Strong Coupling: the Beginning of a Long Journey

Abstract:Development of holomorphy-based methods in super-Yang-Mills theories started in the early 1980s and lead to a number of breakthrough results. I review some results in which I participated. The discovery of Seiberg's duality and the Seiberg-Witten solution of ${\cal N}=2$ Yang-Mills were the milestones in the long journey of which, I assume, much will be said in other talks. I will focus on the discovery (2003) of non-Abelian vortex strings with various degree of supersymmetry, supported in some four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories and some intriguing implications of this discovery. One of the recent results is the observation of a soliton string in the bulk ${\cal N}=2$ theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four flavors, which can become critical in a certain limit. This is the case of a "reverse holography," with a very transparent physical meaning.

We work in both Minkowski spacetime and Euclidean space, and we construct 1/4 and 1/2 BPS Wilson loops. We also provide a complete proof that the difference between 1/4 and 1/2 Wilson loops is Q-exact with Q being some supercharge that is preserved by both the 1/4 and 1/2 Wilson loops. This plays an important role in applying the localization techniques to compute the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops. We also study the M-theory dual of the 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop.

Abstract:The effective Hamiltonians for chiral supersymmetric gauge theories at small spatial volume are generalizations of the Hamiltonians describing the motion of a scalar or a spinor particle in a field of Dirac monopoles (we are dealing in fact with a certain lattice of monopoles supplemented with a periodic singular potential). The gauge fields in such Hamiltonians belong to the Cartan subalgebras of the corresponding gauge algebras. Such a construction exists for all groups admitting complex representations, i.e., for SU(N≥3) , Spin(4n+2) with n≥1 and E6 . We give explicit expressions for these Hamiltonians for SU(3) , SU(4)≃Spin(6) and for SU(5) . The simplified version of such a Hamiltonian, deprived of fermion terms, of the extra scalar potential and when only one node of the lattice is taken into consideration, describe a 3r -dimensional motion ( r being the rank of the group) in the field what we call a "Cartan monopole." Abstract:We study classical solutions of N=4 super Yang–Mills theories that are invariant under 1/4 of the supersymmetry generators. Expressions for the mass and electric charge of the configurations are derived as functions on the monopole moduli space. These functions also provide a method of determining the number of normalisable bosonic zero modes.

Abstract:By assuming the existence of a novel multipronged string state for D-particles interacting with D-brane intersections in type IIA string theory, we are able to derive a quantum mechanical description of supersymmetric Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. A supersymmetric index calculation provides evidence for this conjecture. The quantum mechanical system becomes two decoupled conformal quantum mechanical systems in the low energy limit. The conformal quantum mechanics has expected properties of a dual description of string theory on $AdS_2\times S^2$.

Abstract:A gauge transformation provided by the three eigenfunctions of $\B^a(x) \cdot \B^b(x)$ (where $\B^a(x)$, with a=1,2,3, are the non-Abelian magnetic fields) exposes the topological configurations of the Yang-Mills fields. In particular, it gives Dirac monopoles interacting with `photons' and massless charged vector bosons. A magnetic dipole field at each monopole corresponds to infinitesimal translation of the monopole, and provides the functional measure a la collective coordinates. The grand canonical partition function of the monopole plasma is exactly equivalent to a local field theory with certain scalar fields interacting with the Yang-Mills fields. This integrates topological degrees of freedom with perturbation theory.

Abstract:We construct supersymmetric fermionic Wilson loops along general curves in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and along general planar curves in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ quiver theory. These loops are generalizations of the Zarembo loops and are cohomologically equivalent to them. In $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, we compute their expectation values and verify the cohomological equivalence relation up to the order $g^4$ in perturbation theory.

Abstract:We perform a topological-holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory on a four-manifold of the form $M_4=\Sigma_1 \times \Sigma_2$ with Riemann surfaces $\Sigma_{1,2}$, and unravel the mathematical implications of its physics. In particular, we consider different linear combinations of the resulting scalar supercharges under $S$-duality, where this will allow us to derive novel topological and holomorphic invariants of $M_4$ and their Langlands duals. As the twisted theory can be topological along $\Sigma_1$ whence we can dimensionally reduce it to 2d, via the effective sigma-model on $\Sigma_2$, we can also relate these 4d invariants and their Langlands duals to the mirror symmetry of Higgs bundles and that of quasi-topological strings described by the sheaf of chiral differential operators. As an offshoot, we would be able to obtain a fundamental understanding from 4d gauge theory, why chiral differential operators are purely perturbative objects.

Unifying Monopole and Center Vortex as the Semiclassical Confinement Mechanism

Abstract:Magnetic excitations play a crucial role in understanding the color confinement of $4$d Yang-Mills theory, and we have the monopole and the center vortex as plausible candidates to explain its mechanism. Under suitable compactified setups of $4$d Yang-Mills theory, we can achieve different weakly-coupled descriptions of confinement phenomena: The monopole mechanism takes place on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the double-trace deformation, and the center-vortex mechanism is effective on $\mathbb{R}^2\times T^2$ with the 't Hooft flux. We unify these two semiclassical descriptions by showing the explicit relation between the monopole and center vortex.

A quantum mechanics for magnetic horizons

Abstract:We construct an $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauged quantum mechanics, by starting from the 3d Chern-Simons-matter theory holographically dual to massive Type IIA string theory on AdS$_4 \times S^6$, and Kaluza-Klein reducing on $S^2$ with a background that is dual to the asymptotics of static dyonic BPS black holes in AdS$_4$. The background involves a choice of gauge fluxes, that we fix via a saddle-point analysis of the 3d topologically twisted index at large $N$. The ground-state degeneracy of the effective quantum mechanics reproduces the entropy of BPS black holes, and we expect its low-lying spectrum to contain information about near-extremal horizons. Interestingly, the model has a large number of statistically-distributed couplings, reminiscent of SYK models.

Abstract:We present a non-geometric derivation of $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super Yang-Mills by focusing on the consistency of interactions that extend the free vector supermultiplet rather than assuming gauge invariance under extended symmetries. By utilizing a superspace first-order description, the theory is given in closed form as a third-order polynomial which includes a single cubic interaction term instead of an infinite series, thus eliminating the need for a special gauge. The geometrical interpretation of the theory emerges, as opposed to being presupposed.

Abstract:We present ongoing investigations of maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills ($Q = 16$ SYM) theory in three space-time dimensions. At low temperatures and large $N$ this theory is related to black branes in higher-dimensional quantum gravity. Building on previous work that focused on the homogeneous `D2' phase of the theory, we are now exploring phase transitions between this D2 phase and the localized `D0' phase.
