Abstract:The prominent exposure of active facets within a crystal significantly influences the physicochemical properties of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). In this study, α-MnO 2 -MLD-2 catalyst with a highly exposed {2 1 1} active crystal facet prepared via a mild oxidation method, demonstrates efficient catalytic oxidation performance for chlorobenzene (CB). By regulating the exposure degree of {2 1 1} crystal facet, the generation of active sites (oxygen vacancies, lattice defects, etc.) within the crystal facet is facilitated. The results of EPR, TEM et al. verified abundance of oxygen vacancies and defect sites in α-MnO 2 -MLD-2, indicating that the {2 1 1} crystal surface governs the degradation of CB through active sites (T 90  = 330°C). Moreover, by comparing the CB degradation rates of typical α-MnO 2 (T 90  = 368°C) with highly exposed crystal facet of {1 1 0}, {2 0 0}, {3 1 0}, and {2 1 1}, it is found that the presence of polycrystalline facet may inhibit the activity of {2 1 1} crystal facet by restricting the production of surface-active sites. Additional investigations demonstrate that that existence of {2 1 1} crystal facet can effectively inhibit the deposition of Cl species, corroborating the superior CB catalytic performance of the predominantly exposed {2 1 1} crystal surface. Furmore, the stability of the active crystal facet was investigated and the reaction pathway is revealed by systematic mechanism study.
