Abstract:Crack propagation behavior in the short crack regime has been shown to be quite complex than the steady-state behavior of long cracks. This complex behavior results from the fact that there are many controlling damage parameters to govern crack growth behaviors in smaller length scales. Artificial neural network (ANN) methods have recently received great attention to study material deformation and fatigue damage due to their potential capabilities to model complex mechanical responses. In this paper, two different ANN methods have been developed to predict fatigue crack growth rates in the short crack regime. The developed ANN methods known as extreme learning machine (ELM) and radial basis function network (RBFN) have been assessed under various loading conditions. Experimental data sets of 2024-T3, 7075-T6, and 2090-TBE41 aluminum alloys and Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloy are used to train and verify the prediction accuracy of ELM and RBFN methods. The data sets are categorized based on a wide range of R-ratios and stress levels. Both ANN methods show good prediction capability. However, computed results show that the RBFN is more accurate in interpolation and predicting nonlinear behavior of the short crack growth behavior. On the other hand, ELM offers relatively a superior potential in extrapolation prediction.
