Abstract:Let $f$ be a complex Hénon map and $\mu$ its unique measure of maximal entropy. We prove that $\mu$ is exponentially mixing of all orders for all (not necessarily bounded) plurisubharmonic observables, and that all plurisubharmonic functions satisfy the central limit theorem with respect to $\mu$. Our results hold more generally for every Hénon-Sibony map on $\mathbb{C}^k$.

Abstract:We investigate mixing properties of piecewise affine non-Markovian maps acting on $[0,1]^2$ or $[0,1]^3$ and preserving the Lebesgue measure, which are natural generalizations of the {\it heterochaos baker maps} introduced in [Y. Saiki, H. Takahasi, J. A. Yorke. Nonlinearity 34 (2021) 5744-5761]. These maps are skew products over uniformly expanding or hyperbolic bases, and the fiber direction is a center in which both contracting and expanding behaviors coexist. We prove that these maps are mixing of all orders. For maps with a mostly expanding or contracting center, we establish exponential mixing for Hölder continuous functions. Using this result, for the Dyck system originating in the theory of formal languages, we establish exponential mixing with respect to its two coexisting ergodic measures of maximal entropy.

Rates of mixing for the measure of maximal entropy of dispersing billiard maps

Abstract:In a recent work, Baladi and Demers constructed a measure of maximal entropy for finite horizon dispersing billiard maps and proved that it is unique, mixing and moreover Bernoulli. We show that this measure enjoys natural probabilistic properties for Hölder continuous observables, such as at least polynomial decay of correlations and the Central Limit Theorem. The results of Baladi and Demers are subject to a condition of sparse recurrence to singularities. We use a similar and slightly stronger condition, and it has a direct effect on our rate of decay of correlations. For billiard tables with bounded complexity (a property conjectured to be generic), we show that the sparse recurrence condition is always satisfied and the correlations decay at a super-polynomial rate.

Abstract:For the heterochaos baker maps whose central direction is mostly neutral, we prove that correlations for Hölder continuous functions decay at an optimal polynomial rate of order $n^{-3/2}$. Our method of proof relies on a description of the action of a reduced Perron-Frobenius operator by means of a comparison to the symmetric simple random walk with an absorbing wall, aka `gambler's ruin problem'.

Abstract:For $C^{1+}$ maps, possibly non-invertible and with singularities, we prove that each homoclinic class of an adapted hyperbolic measure carries at most one adapted hyperbolic measure of maximal entropy. We then apply this to study the finiteness/uniqueness of such measures in several different settings: finite horizon dispersing billiards, codimension one partially hyperbolic endomorphisms with "large" entropy, robustly non-uniformly hyperbolic volume-preserving endomorphisms as in Andersson-Carrasco-Saghin, and strongly transitive non-uniformly expanding maps.

Abstract:The theorem of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman states that for every generating partition on an ergodic system, the exponential decay rate of the measure of cylinder sets equals the metric entropy almost everywhere (provided the entropy is finite). In this paper we prove that the measure of cylinder sets are lognormally distributed for strongly mixing systems and infinite partitions and show that the rate of convergence is polynomial provided the fourth moment of the information function is finite. Also, unlike previous results by Ibragimov and others which only apply to finite partitions, here we do not require any regularity of the conditional entropy function. We also obtain the law of the iterated logarithm and the weak invariance principle for the information function.

Abstract:We investigate systematically several mixing concepts via sequence entropy both in measure-theoretical dynamical systems and in topological dynamical systems, and obtain some new theorems or new proofs of some known theorems. In particular, characterizations of rigidity and mild mixing via sequence entropy are obtained. Moreover, we show that if the topological entropy of an open cover is positive, then the sequence entropy of the cover with respect to any sequence is positive. As applications we prove that minimal topological Kolmogorov system is strongly mixing and any transitive diagonal flow is mildly mixing.

Abstract:We prove that aperiodic and linearly repetitive Lorentz gases with finite horizon are not mixing with exponential or stretched exponential speed in any dimension for any class of Hölder observables. We also bound the polynomial speed of mixing for observables in the Hölder space $H_{\alpha}$ depending on $\alpha$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we show that for every $n\geq 2$ there are minimal systems with perfect weakly mixing sets of order $n$ and all weakly mixing sets of order $n+ 1$ trivial. We present some relations between weakly mixing sets and topological sequence entropy; in particular, we prove that invertible minimal systems with non-trivial weakly mixing sets of order three always have positive topological sequence entropy. We also study relations between weak mixing of sets and other well-established notions from qualitative theory of dynamical systems like (regional) proximality, chaos and equicontinuity in a broad sense.

Abstract:We consider a Lebesgue measure preserving map of the 2-torus, given by the composition of orthogonal tent shaped shears. We establish strong mixing properties with respect to the invariant measure and polynomial decay of correlations for Holder observables, making use of results from the chaotic billiards literature. The system serves as a prototype example of piecewise linear maps which sit on the boundary of ergodicity, possessing null measure sets around which mixing is slowed and which birth elliptic islands under certain perturbations.

Abstract:Under a natural assumption on the dynamical degrees, we prove that the Green currents associated to any Hénon-like map in any dimension have Hölder continuous super-potentials, i.e., give Hölder continuous linear functionals on suitable spaces of forms and currents. As a consequence, the unique measure of maximal entropy is the Monge-Ampère of a Hölder continuous plurisubharmonic function and has strictly positive Hausdorff dimension. Under the same assumptions, we also prove that the Green currents are woven. When they are of bidegree $(1,1)$, they are laminar. In particular, our results generalize results known until now only in algebraic settings, or in dimension 2.

Abstract:We study the property of global-local mixing for full-branched expanding maps of either the half-line or the interval, with one indifferent fixed point. Global-local mixing expresses the decorrelation of global vs local observables w.r.t. to an infinite measure $\mu$. Global observables are essentially bounded functions admitting an infinite-volume average, i.e., a limit for the average of the function over bigger and bigger intervals; local observables are integrable functions (both notions are relative to $\mu$). Of course, the definition of global observable depends on the exact definition of infinite-volume average. The first choice for it would be to consider averages over the entire space minus a neighborhood of the indifferent fixed point (a.k.a. the "point at infinity"), in the limit where such neighborhood vanishes. This is the choice that was made in previous papers on the subject. The classes of systems for which global-local mixing was proved, with this natural choice of global observables, are ample but not really general. In this paper we consider uniformly global observables, i.e., $L^\infty$ functions whose averages over any interval $V$ converges to a limit, uniformly as $\mu(V) \to \infty$. Uniformly global observables form quite an extensive subclass of all global observables. We prove global-local mixing in the sense of uniformly global observables, for two truly general classes of expanding maps with one indifferent fixed point, respectively on $\mathbb{R}_0^+$ and on $(0,1]$. The technical core of the proofs is rather different from previous work.

Exponential mixing and essential spectral gaps for Anosov subgroups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense $\Theta$-Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group for some nonempty subset of simple roots $\Theta$. In the Anosov setting, there is a natural compact metric space $\mathcal{X}$ equipped with a family of translation flows $\{a^{\mathsf{v}}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb R}$, parameterized by vectors $\mathsf{v}$ in the interior of the $\Theta$-limit cone $\mathcal{L}_\Theta$ of $\Gamma$, and they are Hölder conjugate to Hölder reparametrizations of the Gromov geodesic flow. We prove that for all $\mathsf{v}$ outside an exceptional cone $\mathscr{E} \subset \operatorname{int}\mathcal{L}_\Theta$, which is a smooth image of the walls of the Weyl chamber, the translation flow is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure associated to $\mathsf{v}$. Moreover, the exponential rate is uniform for a compact set of such $\mathsf{v}$. We also obtain an essential spectral gap formulated in terms of the Selberg zeta function and a prime orbit theorem with a power saving error term. Our proof relies on Lie theoretic techniques to prove the crucial local non-integrability condition (LNIC) for the translation flows and thereby implement Dolgopyat's method in a uniform fashion. The exceptional cone $\mathscr{E}$ arises from the failure of LNIC for those vectors.

Exponential Mixing Via Additive Combinatorics

Abstract:We prove that the geodesic flow on a geometrically finite locally symmetric space of negative curvature is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. The approach is based on constructing a suitable anisotropic Banach space on which the infinitesimal generator of the flow admits an essential spectral gap. A key step in the proof involves estimating certain oscillatory integrals against the Patterson-Sullivan measure. For this purpose, we prove a general result of independent interest asserting that measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that do not concentrate near proper affine subspaces enjoy polynomial Fourier decay outside of a sparse set of frequencies. As an intermediate step, we show that the $L^q$-dimension ($1<q\leq \infty$) of iterated self-convolutions of such measures tend towards that of the ambient space. Our analysis also yields that the Laplace transform of the correlation function of smooth observables extends meromorphically to the entire complex plane in the convex cocompact case and to a strip of explicit size beyond the imaginary axis in the case the manifold admits cusps.

Abstract:We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-norming CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the quenched CLT holds, assuming fiberwise centering. Finally, we show a multivariate CLT for intermittent quasi-static systems. Our approach is based on Stein’s method of normal approximation.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of weakly mixing sets of order n and show that, in contrast to weak mixing of maps, a weakly mixing set of order n does not have to be weakly mixing of order n + 1. Strictly speaking, we construct a minimal invertible dynamical system which contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 2, whereas it does not contain any non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 3. In dimension one this difference is not that much visible, since we prove that every continuous map f from a topological graph into itself has positive topological entropy if and only if it contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 2 if and only if it contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of all orders.

Abstract:The dynamics of one parameter diagonal group actions on finite volumehomogeneous spaces has a partially hyperbolic feature.
