Abstract:AgCrO2 nanoparticles incorporated with magnesium were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and its response to ethylene glycol vapor was improved, with a remarkable detection limited down to ppm level. This hybrid oxide also exhibits a high selectivity and response (16.2–10 ppm ethylene glycol) at low operation temperature of 120 °C with short response/recovery time (32s/130s). Based on the microstructural characterizations including X-ray diffraction, electron microscope observation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope probing, the first-principles calculation of the gas-oxide system was performed to elucidate the sensing enhancement by Mg hybridization. It started with the adsorption of gas to the superficial Ag atom in the vicinity of doped Mg, which was then followed by dehydrogenation resulting in electrons releasing and charge transfer through the adatom bond and supplementary route towards a terminal Ag atom. This work provided a new perspective to the atomic interaction between the specific gas molecules and sensitive oxide layer, which delivered approaches of chemiresistive material system optimization for advanced gas sensing application.
