Abstract:According to a general probabilistic principle, the natural divisors of friable integers (i.e. integers free of large prime factors) should normally present a Gaussian distribution. We show that this indeed is the case with conditional density tending to 1 as soon as the standard necessary conditions are met. Furthermore, we provide explicit, essentially optimal estimates for the decay of the involved error terms. The size of the exceptional set is sufficiently small to enable recovery of the average behaviour in the same optimal range. Our argument combines the saddle-point method with new large deviations estimates for the distribution of certain additive functions.

Abstract:A new discrete distribution involving geometric and discrete Pareto as special cases is introduced. The distribution possesses many interesting properties like decreasing hazard rate, zero vertex uni-modality, over-dispersion, infinite divisibility and compound Poisson representation, which makes the proposed distribution well suited for count data modeling. Other issues including closure property under minima, comparison of its distribution tail with other distributions via actuarial indices are discussed. The method of proportion and maximum likelihood method are presented for parameter estimation. Finally the performance of the proposed distribution over other classical and newly proposed infinitely divisible distributions are discussed.

Abstract:The well known Erdos-Turan law states that the logarithm of an order of a random permutation is asymptotically normally distributed. The aim of this work is to estimate convergence rate in this theorem and also to prove analogous result for distribution of the logarithm of an order of a random permutation on a certain class of subsets of the symmetric group. We also study the asymptotic behavior of the mean values of multiplicative functions on the symmetric group and the results we obtain are of independent interest besides their application to the investigation of the remainder term in the Erdos-Turan law. We also study a related problem of distribution of the degree of a splitting field of a random polynomial and obtain sharp estimates for its convergence rate to normal law. In research we apply both probabilistic and analytic methods. Some analytic methods used here have their origins in the probabilistic number theory, and some have their roots in the theory of summation of divergent series. One of the approaches we use is to apply Tauberian type estimates for Voronoi summability of divergent series to analyze the generating functions of the mean values of multiplicative functions.

Abstract:This paper proposes another constant that can be associated with Fibonacci sequence. In this work, we look at the probability distributions generated by the linear convolution of Fibonacci sequence with itself, and the linear convolution of symmetrized Fibonacci sequence with itself. We observe that for a distribution generated by the linear convolution of the standard Fibonacci sequence with itself, the variance converges to 8.4721359... . Also, for a distribution generated by the linear convolution of symmetrized Fibonacci sequences, the variance converges in an average sense to 17.1942 ..., which is approximately twice that we get with common Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new probability distribution on (0,1), associated with the I-function, namely, the I-function distribution. This distribution generalizes several known distributions with positive support. It is also shown that the distribution of products, quotients and powers of independent I-function variates are I-function variates. Another distribution called the I-function inverse Gaussian distribution is also introduced and studied.

Abstract:Based on the combinatorial interpretation of the ordered Bell numbers, which count all the ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we introduce the Fibonacci partition as a Fibonacci permutation of its blocks. Then we define the Fibonacci-Fubini numbers that count the total number of Fibonacci partitions of $[n]$. We study the classical properties of this sequence (generating function, explicit and Dobiński-like formula, etc.), we give combinatorial interpretation, and we extensively examine the Fibonacci-Fubini arithmetic triangle. We give some associate linear recurrence sequences, where in some sequences the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds appear as well.

Abstract:This paper describes a class of sequences that are in many ways similar to Fibonacci sequences: given n, sum the previous two terms and divide them by the largest possible power of n. The behavior of such sequences depends on n. We analyze these sequences for small n: 2, 3, 4, and 5. Surprisingly these behaviors are very different. We also talk about any n. Many statements about these sequences are difficult or impossible to prove, but they can be supported by probabilistic arguments, we have plenty of those in this paper. We also introduce ten new sequences. Most of the new sequences are also related to Fibonacci numbers proper, not just free Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:We study the distribution of sequences of the form $(q_ny)_{n=1}^\infty$, where $(q_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is some increasing sequence of integers. In particular, we study the Lebesgue measure and find bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points $\gamma \in [0,1)$ which are well approximated by points in the sequence $(q_ny)_{n=1}^\infty$. The bounds on Hausdorff dimension are valid for almost every $y$ in the support of a measure of positive Fourier dimension. When the required rate of approximation is very good or if our sequence is sufficiently rapidly growing, our dimension bounds are sharp. If the measure of positive Fourier dimension is itself Lebesgue measure, our measure bounds are also sharp for a very large class of sequences. We also give an application to inhomogeneous Littlewood type problems.

Abstract:In this paper we focus on continuous univariate probability distributions, like McKay distributions, $K$-distribution, generalized inverse Gaussian distribution and generalised McKay distributions, with support $[0,\infty),$ which are related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and in most cases we show that they belong to the class infinitely divisible distributions, self-decomposable distributions, generalized gamma convolutions and hyperbolically completely monotone densities. Some of the results are known, however the proofs are new and we use special functions technique. Integral representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions as well as of quotients of Gaussian hypergeometric functions, or modified Bessel functions of the second kind play an important role in our study. In addition, by using a different approach we rediscover a Stieltjes transform representation due to Hermann Hankel for the product of modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and we also deduce a series of new Stieltjes transform representations for products, quotients and their reciprocals concerning modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. By using these results we obtain new infinitely divisible modified Bessel distributions with Laplace transforms related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind. Moreover, we show that the new Stieltjes transform representations have some interesting applications and we list some open problems which may be of interest for further research. In addition, we present a new proof via the Pick function characterization theorem for the infinite divisibility of the ratio of two gamma random variables and we present some new Stieltjes transform representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:Following Södergren, we consider a collection of random variables on the space $X_n$ of unimodular lattices in dimension $n$: Normalizations of the angles between the $N = N(n)$ shortest vectors in a random unimodular lattice, and the volumes of spheres with radii equal to the lengths of these vectors. We investigate the expected values of certain functions evaluated at these random variables in the regime where $N$ tends to infinity with $n$ at the rate $N = o \left( n^{1/6} \right)$. Our main result is that as $n \longrightarrow \infty$, these random variables exhibit a joint Poissonian and Gaussian behaviour.

Distribution of integers with digit restrictions via Markov chains

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new technique to study the distribution in residue classes of sets of integers with digit and sum-of-digits restrictions. From our main theorem, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for integers with missing digits to be uniformly distributed in arithmetic progressions, extending previous results going back to work of Erdős, Mauduit and Sárközy. Our approach utilizes Markov chains and does not rely on Fourier analysis as many results of this nature do. Our results apply more generally to the class of multiplicatively invariant sets of integers. This class, defined by Glasscock, Moreira and Richter using symbolic dynamics, is an integer analogue to fractal sets and includes all missing digits sets. We address uniform distribution in this setting, partially answering an open question posed by the same authors.

Abstract:In this article, we study a covering process of the discrete one-dimensional torus that uses connected arcs of random sizes in the covering. More precisely, fix a distribution \mu on \mathbb{N}, and for every n\geq 1 we will cover the torus \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} as follows: at each time step, we place an arc with a length distributed as \mu and a uniform starting point. Eventually, the space will be covered entirely by these arcs. Changing the arc length distribution \mu can potentially change the limiting behavior of the covering time. Here, we expose four distinct phases for the fluctuations of the cover time in the limit. These phases can be informally described as the Gumbel phase, the compactly support phase, the pre-exponential phase, and the exponential phase. Furthermore, we expose a continuous-time cover process that works as a limit distribution within the compactly support phase.
