Abstract:Tetrahedral units can transport oxide anions via interstitial or vacancy defects owing to their great deformation and rotation flexibility. Compared with interstitial defects, vacancy-mediated oxide-ion conduction in tetrahedra-based structures is more difficult and occurs rarely. The isolated tetrahedral anion Scheelite structure has showed the advantage of conducting oxygen interstitials but oxygen vacancies can hardly be introduced into Scheelite to promote the oxide ion migration. Here we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies can be stabilized in the BiVO4 Scheelite structure through Sr2+ for Bi3+ substitution, leading to corner-sharing V2O7 tetrahedral dimers, and migrate via a cooperative mechanism involving V2O7-dimer breaking and reforming assisted by synergic rotation and deformation of neighboring VO4 tetrahedra. This finding reveals the ability of Scheelite structure to transport oxide ion through vacancies or interstitials, emphasizing the possibility to develop oxide-ion conductors with parallel vacancy and interstitial doping strategies within the same tetrahedra-based structure type.

Abstract:Solid-state oxide ion and proton conductors are garnering significant attention due to their high ionic conductivity and potential applications in a range of electrochemical devices, including solid oxide fuel cells and gas sensors. In this study, we report the influence of partial substitution of La 3+ in isolated tetrahedral LaVO 4 ceramics with 0.01 mol of alkaline-earth metals Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ and Ba 2+ on the phase stability and electrical properties. It was found that acceptor doping effectively enhances mixed oxide ion and proton conductivities, with Sr 2+ substitution yielding the highest conductivity, achieving ∼10 −3 S cm −1 at 900 °C under a wet O 2 atmosphere. DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that protons preferentially form hydrogen bonds with the lattice oxygen near the dopants and migrate through a continuous process of hopping and rotation between inter- and intra-tetrahedral VO 4 groups. Additionally, the existence of oxygen vacancies facilitates the formation of V 2 O 7 dimers through sharing corners with adjacent isolated VO 4 tetrahedra, enabling ion exchange through a synergistic mechanism involving V 2 O 7 dimer breaking and reforming. This research highlights the critical role of the deformation and rotational flexibility of isolated tetrahedral units in facilitating oxide ion and proton transport, underscoring the potential for developing mixed oxide ion and proton conductors in oxygen vacancy-deficient oxides with tetrahedral-based structures.

Abstract:Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) perovskite is often considered as a potential lead-free piezoelectric material but it can also be an excellent oxide-ion conductor (M. Li et al., Nature Materials, 13, 2014, 31-35). Here we report the non-stoichiometry and oxide-ion conductivity of undoped and acceptor-doped NBT. A range of acceptor-type ions with varying doping levels are selected to incorporate into NBT or Bi-deficient NBT (nominal Na0.5Bi0.49TiO2.985; NB0.49T). Low levels of acceptors (typically < 2 at%) can be doped on both cation sites of NBT by an ionic compensation mechanism to create oxygen vacancies and are therefore effective in enhancing the bulk oxide-ion conductivity to values of similar to 2 mS cm(-1) at 400 degrees C. A maximum enhancement of less than 1 order of magnitude is achieved using either A-site Sr (or Ca) or B-site Mg doping in NB0.49T. This conductivity maximum is in good agreement with an oxygen-vacancy diffusivity limit model in a perovskite lattice proposed by R. A. De Souza (Advanced Functional Materials, 25, 2015, 6326-6342) and suggests that optimisation of the ionic conductivity in NBT has been achieved. Our findings on NBT illustrate that this approach should be applicable to other acceptor-doped perovskite oxides to determine their electrolyte (oxide-ion) conductivity limit.
Theoretical calculation and experimental study on the conductivity and stability of Bi-doped SnO2 electrode

Abstract:In this study, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4-Bi2O3/PbO2 anodes are prepared by electrodeposition method, and formation energy and band structure are analysed using first-principles calculations. The phase structure and valence states of the electrode are analysed using X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. Furthermore, the accelerated service life of the electrode is evaluated to be 4 A cm−2. The results show that the lattice parameters of Bi-doped SnO2 system increase approximately linearly with increasing Bi doping concentration. For the Bi-doped SnO2 system, the minimum value of formation energy is −10.28eV, and the most stable structure is obtained when the Bi doping ratio is 0.0625. The formation energy gradually increases and the stability decreases with increasing doping ratio. Moreover, the conductivity of the anode reaches the maximum value and the accelerated service life increases up to 52h when the doping ratio is 0.0625. On the basis of our experiment and theoretical calculations, the Bi-doped SnO2 electrode is shown to be a good acid-proof anode.

Abstract:The structural stability and oxygen ionic movement in doped δ‐phase Bi2O3 have been investigated in terms of density‐functional theory using the full‐potential linearized augmented plane‐wave method. With variations of impurity concentration in supercell Bi16–x Mx O24, total energies and densities of states were calculated for different impurities M. Doped with Ca, Sr, La, Gd or Sm, the ionic conductivity monotonically decreases, while an initial increase in ionic conductivity followed by a decrease is observed when doped with Y, Tb, Dy, Er or Tm. A maximum conductivity is obtained with enhancing impurity concentration x. Our results support the mechanism of effective oxygen vacancies. It is also found that the system is more stable when the distance between impurities is larger. Additionally, the more stabilized δ‐phase Bi2O3 is obtained by doping rare‐earth atoms. Formation Energy and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Bivo4 after Doping at Bi3+ or V5+ Sites with Higher Valence Metal Ions

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting is an attractive method to produce H-2 fuel from solar energy and water. Ion doping with higher valence states was used widely to enhance the photocurrent of an n-type oxide semiconductor. In this study, the different doping sites and the photoelectrochemical properties of Mo6+, W6+ and Sn4+-doped BiVO4 were studied systematically. The results suggested that Mo6+ or W6+-doped BiVO4 had a much higher photocurrent while the photocurrent of Sn4+-doped BiVO4 did not change obviously. Raman and XPS were used to identify the doping sites in the BiVO4 crystal lattice. It was found that Mo or W substituted V sites but Sn did not substitute Bi sites. Results of theoretical calculation indicated that a higher formation energy and lower solubility of impurity ions led to serious SnO2 segregation on the surface of the Sn4+-doped BiVO4 thin film, which was the main reason for the poor performance of Sn-doped BiVO4. The higher formation energy of Sn4+ came from the large mismatch of ion radius and different outer shell electron distribution. These results can offer guidance in choosing suitable doping ions for other semiconductor photoelectrodes.

Abstract:The samples of Bi2V0.9Cu0.1-xSnxO5.5-delta (0 <= x <= 0.75) were prepared by solid-state reaction. Room temperature powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that the synthesized compounds present the tetragonal gamma-phase structure. The measurement results show that doped-Sn benefits to the control of microstructure of the sample and favor its mechanic property though it doesn't further improve the electrical conductivity of the system. The oxygen permeation measurement result indicates oxygen transport in Bi2V0.9Cu0.1-xSnxO5.5-delta system is controlled mainly by the process of surface oxygen exchange.

Abstract:Oxide ion conductors have been increasingly studied for many years because of their application in devices with high economical interest such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), oxygen sensors, dense ceramic membranes for oxygen separation, and membrane reactors for oxidative catalysis. Bismuth oxides present polymorph forms, such as δ-, β- or γ-Bi2O3, with great potential for such applications, alone or in combination with other oxides. The present study investigates the influence of selected ions (Fe3+, Sb3+/Sb5+, and Ta5+), introduced as dopant in α-Bi2O3 and their effect on the structure and properties of the oxide polymorph forms obtained at high temperature. The molar ratio was Bi2O3:MxOy 0.95:0.05 where M=Fe2O3, Sb2O3 or Ta2O5, respectively.The structural changes of α-Bi2O3 were analysed by powder X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDX analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The structural changes are correlated with bulk ceramic characteristics (density, porosity) and their electrical behaviour versus temperature. The presence of some dopants (antimony and tantalum) on bismuth sites enlarges and enhances the stability of the polymorph forms, which is relevant to potential application.

Abstract:Ba7Nb4MoO20-based hexagonal perovskite derivatives are promising oxygen-ion conductors for solid electrolytes in solid-oxide fuel cells and electrolysers. A thorough understanding of chemical substitution and its impact on structural features conducive to high ionic conductivity is fundamental for decreasing the operation temperature of such devices. Here, a new 7H polytype-based composition, namely Ba7Nb3.9-x V x Mo1.1O20.05, is investigated to assess the effect of vanadium substitution. Structural changes upon V incorporation are studied using X-ray and neutron diffraction, as well as 51V and 93Nb solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. For the undoped composition at room temperature, two distinct oxygen sites (O1 and O5) are found along the palmierite-like layer, corresponding to a mix of four- and six-fold coordination for adjacent M2 cations. At high temperature (527 °C), reorganization of oxygen results in the major occupation of O1 and four-fold (tetrahedral) coordination of the M2 cations. The same rearrangement is observed upon V-substitution, but already at room temperature. From 51V NMR, we identified a tetrahedral coordination for V5+ cations, indicating their preferential occupation of the M2 site. This preferential occupation by V5+ cations is correlated with increasing tetrahedral coordination of Nb5+ cations as observed from 93Nb NMR. Altogether, these observations indicate that V-substitution impacts the oxygen sublattice so as to mimic the high-temperature structure. Additionally, BVSE calculations demonstrate a decreasing energy barrier for O2- migration associated with the presence of vanadium in the structure. This conclusion corroborates the hypothesis that vanadium's propensity for a lower coordination number is beneficial for promoting high O2- mobility in this promising class of oxide-ion conductors.

Abstract:Charge separation plays a crucial role in determining the solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Of the factors that affect charge separation, the anisotropic charge transport property of semiconductors shows great potential in promoting charge separation, but it has received little attention. Herein, we report BiVO4 photoanodes with predominant [010] and [121] orientations and demonstrate a crystallographic-orientation-dependent charge separation of BiVO4 for solar water oxidation. We found that a [010]-orientated BiVO4 photoanode generated a photocurrent 2.9 times that of the [121]-orientated one, owing to the significantly improved charge separation. An in-depth investigation of the surface band bending by open-circuit potential and film conductivity by contacting atomic force microscopy reveals that the higher electron mobility along the [010] direction than that of [121] accounts for the improvement in charge separation. This work offers a fundamental insight into charge separation in anisotropic photoanodes for rational design of efficient photoanodes for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Although the vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits the most abrupt metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) property near room temperature among representative 3d-orbital correlated oxides, their meanwhile structural variation across the MIT usually results in poor mechanical properties as bulk pellets. While compositing with high resistive oxides was reported to improve the mechanical strength of bulk VO2 via suppressing the generation and propagation of microcracks upon thermocycling across the MIT, their respective impacts to the electrical transportations are yet unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the role of these high resistive oxide-composites (e.g., HfO2, CoO and Al2O3) in reducing the charge leakage along the microcracks within the insulating phase of VO2, leading to more abrupt MIT properties from the perspective of electrical transportations. It enables the possibility to meanwhile regulate the critical temperature and transition abruption of the MIT as well as the mechanical properties of the VO2 bulk pellets via compositing to oxides with two different melting points using the spark plasma assisted reactive sintering (SPARS).

Abstract:Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has emerged as an excellent optically active photoanode material due to its unique physical and chemical properties. Experiments reported that low-concentration of oxygen vacancies enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity of BiVO4, but the high-concentration of oxygen vacancies decrease the charge carrier lifetime. Using time-domain density functional theory and molecular dynamics, we have demonstrated that the distribution of oxygen vacancies has strong effects on the static electronic structure and nonadiabatic (NA) coupling of BiVO4 photoanode. The localized oxygen vacancies create the charge recombination centers within the band gap and enhance the NA coupling between VBM and CBM, resulting in fast charge and energy losses. By contrast, the discrete oxygen vacancies can eliminate the charge recombination centers and decrease the NA coupling between VBM and CBM, enhancing the PEC activity of monoclinic BiVO4. Our study suggests that the PEC performance of photoanode can be improved by changing the distribution of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:The water oxidation reaction, as a half-reaction in photoelectrochemistry (PEC) water splitting, has long been hindered due to its slow kinetics. Creating oxygen vacancies (Ov) has attracted considerable attention as an effective method to improve the conductivity and facilitate the surface reaction of photoelectronic materials to improve their PEC performance. Therefore, the preparation of suitable photoanodes with oxygen vacancies becomes a critical part in the development of PEC water splitting. Herein, we designed a novel synthetic strategy involving In doping, photo-potentiostatic polarization and co-catalyst deposition, to induce massive oxygen vacancies in BiVO 4 photoanode for efficient PEC water oxidation. The prepared FeOOH/In-BiVO 4 (L) photoanode exhibits an outstanding photocurrent density of 5.02 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE , which improved 2.7 times compared to those of pristine BiVO 4 photoanode (1.84 mA cm −2 ). By experimental and mechanism exploration, there generated a large number of oxygen vacancies on the BiVO 4 photoanode surface after doping and polarization strategies, which is beneficial to increasing the conductivity and charge separation. Besides, FeOOH co-catalyst is deposited to provide more abundant active sites for the water oxidation reaction. This work demonstrates that In doping and photo-potentiostatic polarization strategies can optimize BiVO 4 photoanode to construct highly efficient and stable PEC water splitting devices.

Unconventional Substitution for BiVO4 to Enhance Photoelectrocatalytic Performance by Accelerating Polaron Hopping

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) as a fascinating semi-conductor for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation with suitable band gap (Eg) has been limited by the issue of poor separation and transportation of charge carriers. Herein, we propose an unconventional substitution of V5+ sites by Ti4+ in BiVO4 (Ti:BiVO4) for the similar ionic radii and accelerated polaron hopping. Ti:BiVO4 increased the photocurrent density 1.90 times up to 2.51 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE and increased the charge carrier density 1.81 times to 5.86 x 1018 cm-3. Compared with bare BiVO4, Ti:BiVO4 improves the bulk separation efficiency to 88.3% at 1.23 V vs RHE. The DFT calculations have illustrated that Ti -doping modification could decrease the polaron hopping energy barrier, narrow the Eg, and decrease the overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) concurrently. With further spin-coated FeOOH cocatalyst, the photoanode has a photocurrent density of 3.99 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. The excellent PEC performance of FeOOH/Ti:BiVO4 is attributed to the synergistic effect of the FeOOH layer and Ti doping, which could promote charge carrier separation and transfer by expediting polaron migration.
