Abstract:Despite numerous investigations, there is still no consistent and comprehensive understanding of the behavior of rock-brine interaction during low salinity waterflooding. This study aimed to address this issue by conducting a fundamental investigation of rock-brine interaction for calcite and dolomite rock samples across a wide range of salinity (including SW, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 dSW, and FW), pH (6.5–11.0), and brine composition, with surface charge considerations using zeta potential data. To prepare solutions for zeta potential measurements, carbonate powder was added to brine at a concentration of 1 wt%, and the target pH was set by using very diluted NaOH and HCl solutions. In addition, zeta potentials for calcite and dolomite were simulated with a geochemical software package (PHREEQC). Results showed that decreasing salinity or adding sulfate ions to certain values reduced the zeta potential to more negative values. The trend of zeta potential versus pH depended on salinity, descending at low salinities and remaining constant or ascending at high salinities. By considering the expansion of the double layer, 20 and 10-times diluted seawater showed optimum conditions to make the most negative zeta potentials for calcite and dolomite samples, respectively. The simulation study revealed that Na + can be an active ion for the carbonate-brine system. Simulation results showed an appropriate fit with the experimental data for both rock samples, which is a significant achievement. This is because in the literature, the conformation was obtained in a very limited number of scenarios, whereas we were able to simulate a large number of brines across a wide range of pH conditions. Considering the large number of reaction and equilibrium constants used to obtain the best conformation, future simulation studies can utilize the optimum set of reactions, without needing to run all cases, which will save time and resources.
