Abstract:The structure of alumina-supported rhenium oxide after calcination is described. Mainly monomeric tetrahedrally coordinated ReO4− ions are present, besides minor amounts of species with Re-O-Re bonds; the concentration of the latter increases with the rhenium loading. For simple alkenes at all loadings the system exhibits catalytic activity, but the turnover frequencies dramatically increase with the rhenium loading. Several explanations are discussed, mainly based on Temperature Programmed Reduction and ESR studies. The performance of Re2O7/Al2O3 catalysts can be improved by (i) applying a modified support, e.g. SiO2-Al2O3, (ii) addition of a third metal oxide, e.g. WO3, or (iii) addition of an organometallic compound, e.g. SnMe4. In the latter case, the metathesis of alkenes carrying functional groups also becomes possible. An interpretation of these results is given, and deactivation is discussed in the light of our picture of the catalyst.
