Abstract:Chemical PhysicsMany physical properties of liquid water remain unresolved due to the very fast dynamics involved in the liquid phase. Using attosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, Jordan et al. found that photoemission of electrons from water in the liquid phase shows a time delay of about 50 to 70 attoseconds compared with photoemission from the gas phase. This difference was attributed to solvation effects and was validated by analysis of various contributions to the measured delays and by using theoretical simulations in water clusters of different sizes.Science , this issue p. Abstract:Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is a recent addition to the experimental tool set of attosecond science. This all-optical method measures different observables than the previously existing techniques based on electron and ion detection and overcomes several of their limitations. We review the present state-of-the-art of attosecond transient absorption experiments and theory. Applications cover the exploration of ultrafast electron dynamics in atoms as well as in solid-state systems. As an example we discuss the observation of transiently bound electron wavepacket dynamics in helium in more detail. This example illustrates how transient absorption spectroscopy can provide information that is fundamentally inaccessible to the techniques based on ionisation, namely dynamics occurring well below the ionisation threshold. Furthermore, we show that a model based on wavepacket interference and originally developed to explain modulations in the ion yield is not sufficient to explain the observed optical response of the system. The optical response on extremely short timescales and in systems exposed to strong laser fields is still not fully understood. This makes the method also attractive for fundamental studies. Furthermore, it is expected that the technique will also find future applications for studying molecular systems in gas phase, in solution, or as solids and will greatly benefit from the advances of ultrafast lasers with multi-100-W average power improving signal-to-noise ratio by many orders of magnitude in the near future.

Abstract:Advances in attosecond spectroscopy have enabled tracing and controlling the electron motion dynamics in matter, although they have yielded insufficient information about the electron dynamic in the space domain. Hence, ultrafast electron and x-ray imaging tools have been developed to image the ultrafast dynamics of matter in real time and space. The cutting-edge temporal resolution of these imaging tools is on the order of a few tens to a hundred femtoseconds, limiting imaging to the atomic dynamics and leaving electron motion imaging out of reach. Here, we obtained the attosecond temporal resolution in the transmission electron microscope, which we coined "attomicroscopy." We demonstrated this resolution by the attosecond diffraction measurements of the field-driven electron dynamics in graphene. This attosecond imaging tool would provide more insights into electron motion and directly connect it to the structural dynamics of matter in real-time and space domains, opening the door for long-anticipated real-life attosecond science applications in quantum physics, chemistry, and biology.

Abstract:Attosecond science represents a new frontier in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics, enabling one to probe the exceedingly fast dynamics associated with purely electronic dynamics in a wide range of systems. This paper presents a brief discussion of the technology required to generate attosecond light pulses and gives representative examples of attosecond science carried out in several laboratories. Attosecond transient absorption, a very powerful method in attosecond science, is then reviewed and several examples of gas phase and condensed phase experiments that have been carried out in the Leone/Neumark laboratories are described.

Abstract:Abstract Since the first demonstration of the generation of attosecond pulses (1 as = 10-18s) in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region, several measurement techniques have been introduced, at the beginning for the temporal characterization of the pulses, and immediately after for the investigation of electronic and nuclear ultrafast dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids with unprecedented temporal resolution. The attosecond spectroscopic tools established in the last two decades, together with the development of sophisticated theoretical methods for the interpretation of the experimental outcomes, allowed to unravel and investigate physical processes never observed before, such as the delay in photoemission from atoms and solids, the motion of electrons in molecules after prompt ionization which precede any notable nuclear motion, the temporal evolution of the tunneling process in dielectrics, and many others. This review focused on applications of attosecond techniques to the investigation of ultrafast processes in atoms, molecules and solids. Thanks to the introduction and ongoing developments of new spectroscopic techniques, the attosecond science is rapidly moving towards the investigation, understanding and control of coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in increasingly complex systems, with ever more accurate and complete investigation techniques. Here we will review the most common techniques presenting the latest results in atoms, molecules and solids.

Abstract:We review the first ten years of attosecond science with a selection of recent highlights and trends and give an outlook on future directions. After introducing the main spectroscopic tools, we give recent examples of representative experiments employing them. Some of the most fundamental processes in nature have been studied with some results initiating controversial discussions. Experiments on the dynamics of single-photon ionization illustrate the importance of subtle effects on such extreme timescales and lead us to question some of the well-established assumptions in this field. Attosecond transient absorption, as the first all-optical approach to resolve attosecond dynamics, has been used to study electron wave packet interferences in helium. The attoclock, a recent method providing attosecond time resolution without the explicit need for attosecond pulses, has been used to investigate electron tunneling dynamics and geometry. Pushing the frontiers in attosecond quantum mechanics with increasing temporal and spatial resolution and often limited theoretical models results in unexpected observations. At the same time, attosecond science continues to expand into more complex solid-state and molecular systems, where it starts to have impact beyond its traditional grounds.

Abstract:Attosecond science is well developed for atoms and promising results have been obtained for molecules and solids. Here, we review the first steps in developing attosecond time-resolved measurements in liquids. These advances provide access to time-domain studies of electronic dynamics in the natural environment of chemical reactions and biological processes. We concentrate on two techniques that are representative of the two main branches of attosecond science: pump-probe measurements using attosecond pulses and high-harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). In the first part, we discuss attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy with cylindrical microjets and its application to measure time delays between liquid and gaseous water. We present the experimental techniques, the new data-analysis methods and the experimental results. We describe in detail the conceptual and theoretical framework required to fully describe attosecond chronoscopy in liquids at a quantum-mechanical level. This includes photoionization delays, scattering delays, as well as a coherent description of electron transport and (laser-assisted) photoemission and scattering. As a consequence, we show that attosecond chronoscopy of liquids is, in general, sensitive to both types of delays, as well as the electron mean-free paths. Through detailed modeling, involving state-of-the-art quantum scattering and Monte-Carlo trajectory methods, we show that the photoionization delays dominate in attosecond chronoscopy of liquid water at photon energies of 20-30 eV. This conclusion is supported by a near-quantitative agreement between experiment and theory. In the second part, we introduce HHS of liquids based on flat microjets. These results represent the first observation of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids extending well beyond the visible into the extreme-ultraviolet regime.

Abstract:<p>With the advent of attosecond light pulses at the beginning of this century, the possibility to perform real‐time observations of electron motion in molecules has spurred impressive theoretical developments aimed at providing support and guidance to numerous, but still incipient, experimental efforts devoted to understand chemistry at its ultimate temporal frontier: the attosecond. The first real‐time observation of electron dynamics in a relatively large molecule, phenylalanine, was reported in 2014. This would have been difficult without the help of theory, since observations in this emerging field, recently coined attochemistry, are still indirect. While standard Quantum Chemistry methods can describe excited bound‐state dynamics, new approaches incorporating scattering theory formalisms are needed to understand the interaction with attosecond pulses. Indeed, due to their short wavelengths, lying in the XUV and X‐ray spectral regions, the interaction of such pulses with any molecule inevitably leads to ionization, which requires describing the molecular ionization continuum. Also, because of their short duration (i.e., large bandwidth), ionization is accompanied by the formation of a molecular electronic wave packet (i.e., a coherent superposition of electronic states), which evolves in time and dictates the fate of the molecule at the longer time scales where chemistry shows up. Although much has already been done up to date, current bottlenecks in the field are to account for electron correlations during the ionization process and for the coupled electron and nuclear dynamics that follows. Thus, understanding the many-body interaction between these fundamental building blocks holds the key to advancing fundamental science and, at the same time, directly leads to applications. Attosecond science now provides an entirely new view into the quantum many-body interaction of these microscopic building blocks.

Abstract:Scientists have been developing sources of light with ever-shorter pulse durations, in order to study motion in systems ranging from a golfer’s swing to the motion of atoms within molecules. The shortest pulses produced to date are under 60 attoseconds, i.e. s. One attosecond is to one second as one second is to the age of the universe. For comparison, the classical orbital period of an electron in a hydrogen atom is 150 attoseconds. Attosecond pulses were first produced in 2001. This article describes how attosecond pulses are generated and how they are measured. Some applications of attosecond pulses are described, such as measuring the delay in photoionisation, or observing molecular dissociation dynamics.

Abstract:In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

Abstract:Modern laser technology has revolutionized the sensitivity and precision of spectroscopy by providing coherent light in a spectrum spanning the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelength regimes. However, the generation of shorter-wavelength coherent pulses in the x-ray region has proven much more challenging. The recent emergence of high harmonic generation techniques opens the door to this possibility. Here we review the new science that is enabled by an ability to manipulate and control electrons on attosecond time scales, ranging from new tabletop sources of coherent x-rays to an ability to follow complex electron dynamics in molecules and materials. We also explore the implications of these advances for the future of molecular structural characterization schemes that currently rely so heavily on scattering from incoherent x-ray sources.

Abstract:With the fast development of intense laser technologies, a lot of new phenomena in la- ser-matter interactions have been experimentally observed and successfully explained by various theories and simulations. One of the specular processes is high-order harmonic generation (HHG), in which atoms and molecules can emit photons with energies equal to multiple of the fundamental laser photon energy. By synthesizing several neighboring orders of HHG spectra near its cutoff, experimentalists have been able to generate laser pulses of duration in the attosecond time scale (1 as = 10~(-18) s). The availability of attosecond pulses has opened a drastically new regime of ultrafast sciences, where it is possible for scientists to trace and control the motion of electrons on its natural scale. After the fruitful developments of femtosciences in the last two decades, the newly opened attosecond science is another big jump of human being to understand and control the internal dynamics of atoms and molecules. In this paper, we will give a brief review of what we have done in recent years, especially about tracing and controlling the electronic motion of atoms and molecules by attosecond pulses.

Abstract:Attosecond science opened the door to observing nuclear and electronic dynamics in real time and has begun to expand beyond its traditional grounds. Among several spectroscopic techniques, X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy has become key in understanding matter on ultrafast time scales. In this review, we illustrate the capabilities of this unique tool through a number of iconic experiments. We outline how coherent broadband X-ray radiation, emitted in high-harmonic generation, can be used to follow dynamics in increasingly complex systems. Experiments performed in both molecules and solids are discussed at length, on time scales ranging from attoseconds to picoseconds, and in perturbative or strong-field excitation regimes. Abstract:The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics spotlights the techniques to generate attosecond light pulses. The generation of attosecond pulses heralds a new era in understanding electron dynamics. This perspective traces the evolution of ultrafast science, from early microwave electronics to the recent breakthroughs in attosecond pulse generation and measurement. Key milestones, such as high harmonic generation, the RABBITT method, attosecond streaking camera, etc, illuminate our journey toward capturing the transient electron motions in atoms. Recent discoveries, including zeptosecond delays in H2 single-photon double ionization and the potential of attosecond “electron” pulses despite challenges, etc., hint at an exciting future for ultrafast studies.

Abstract:Significance Excitation of molecules by an ultrashort laser pulse creates rotational wave packets that lead to transient alignment of the molecules along the laser polarization direction. Here, we show that a train of ultrashort laser pulses can be used to enhance the degree of alignment to a high level such that the diffraction from precisely timed ultrashort electron beams may be used to reconstruct the structure of the isolated molecules with atomic resolution through a coherent diffraction imaging technique. Our results mark a great step toward imaging noncrystallized molecules with atomic resolution and pave the way for creation of three-dimensional “molecular movies” at the femtosecond time scale and atomic spatial scale.

Abstract:The recent demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses from an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) opens the possibility for probing ultrafast electron dynamics at X-ray wavelengths. An established experimental method for probing ultrafast dynamics is X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, where the X-ray absorption spectrum is measured by scanning the central photon energy and recording the resultant photoproducts. The spectral bandwidth inherent to attosecond pulses is wide compared to the resonant features typically probed, which generally precludes the application of this technique in the attosecond regime. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a new technique to conduct transient absorption spectroscopy with broad bandwidth attosecond pulses with the aid of ghost imaging, recovering sub-bandwidth resolution in photoproduct-based absorption measurements.
