Abstract:About a decade before the first X-ray FELs scientists had already begun learning how to produce and characterize attosecond pulses of light using the interaction of strong infrared radiation with atoms in a process known as high-harmonic generation. Those exquisite bursts of light gave birth to the field of attosecond science, providing a powerful tool to explore and control the quantum mechanical motion of electrons and their interactions on their natural timescales 2 ; indeed, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L'Huillier for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter. The desire to extend the wavelength and bandwidth of the light, to access inner shell dynamics, and to penetrate deeper into the materials all drove the fervent developments towards the ultraviolet and soft X-ray regime, despite the rapidly decreasing conversion efficiency. More recently, advances in accelerator technology have enabled FELs to generate the large coherent bandwidth required to break the femtosecond barrier, producing much brighter attosecond pulses at short wavelengths. At the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in California, USA, teams have reported on attosecond pulse generation both in the soft (nanometre wavelength) and hard X-ray (Angstrom wavelength) regimes 3,4 . Although the soft X-ray attosecond pulses saw immediate applications in spectroscopy experiments 5,6 , the adaptation of hard X-ray attosecond pulses proceeded more slowly, in part because of a combination of the intrinsically smaller cross sections at shorter wavelengths, and the limited pulse energy.

Abstract:Accelerator-based x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest addition to the revolutionary tools of discovery for the 21st century. The two major components of an XFEL are an accelerator-produced electron beam and a magnetic undulator, which tend to be kilometer-scale long and expensive. A proof-of-principle demonstration of free-electron lasing at 27 nm using beams from compact laser wakefield accelerators was shown recently by using a magnetic undulator. However, scaling these concepts to x-ray wavelengths is far from straightforward as the requirements on the beam quality and jitters become much more stringent. Here, we present an ultracompact scheme to produce tens of attosecond x-ray pulses with several GW peak power utilizing a novel aspect of the FEL instability using a highly chirped, prebunched, and ultrabright tens of MeV electron beam from a plasma-based accelerator interacting with an optical undulator. The FEL resonant relation between the prebunched period and the energy selects resonant electrons automatically from the highly chirped beam which leads to a stable generation of attosecond x-ray pulses. Furthermore, two-color attosecond pulses with subfemtosecond separation can be produced by adjusting the energy distribution of the electron beam so that multiple FEL resonances occur at different locations within the beam. Abstract:Pump-probe experiments with sub-femtosecond resolution are the key to understanding electronic dynamics in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the generation and control of sub-femtosecond pulse pairs from a two-colour X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). By measuring the delay between the two pulses with an angular streaking diagnostic, we characterise the group velocity of the XFEL and demonstrate control of the pulse delay down to 270 as. We demonstrate the application of this technique to a pump-probe measurement in core-excited para-aminophenol. These results demonstrate the ability to perform pump-probe experiments with sub-femtosecond resolution and atomic site specificity.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate attosecond soft x rays in a self-seeded free-electron laser (FEL) suitable for enabling attosecond spectroscopic investigations. A time-energy chirped electron bunch with additional sinusoidal energy modulation is adopted to produce a short seed pulse through a self-seeding monochromator. This short seed pulse, together with high electron current spikes and a cascaded delay setup, enables a high-efficiency FEL with a fresh bunch scheme. Simulations show that using the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) parameters, soft x-ray pulses with a FWHM of 260 attoseconds and a peak power of 0.5 TW can be obtained. This scheme also has the feature of providing a stable central wavelength determined by the self-seeding monochromator.

Abstract:Modern laser technology has revolutionized the sensitivity and precision of spectroscopy by providing coherent light in a spectrum spanning the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelength regimes. However, the generation of shorter-wavelength coherent pulses in the x-ray region has proven much more challenging. The recent emergence of high harmonic generation techniques opens the door to this possibility. Here we review the new science that is enabled by an ability to manipulate and control electrons on attosecond time scales, ranging from new tabletop sources of coherent x-rays to an ability to follow complex electron dynamics in molecules and materials. We also explore the implications of these advances for the future of molecular structural characterization schemes that currently rely so heavily on scattering from incoherent x-ray sources.

Abstract:Since 2001 and the first demonstrations of the feasibility of generating and measuring attosecond light pulses, attosecond science has developed into a very active and quickly evolving research field. Its ultimate goal is the real-time tracking of electron dynamics in all forms of matter, ranging from atoms and large molecules to the condensed phase and plasmas. The accomplishment of this goal has required and still calls for developments in ultrafast laser technology, ultrafast metrology, extreme ultra-violet (XUV) optics, pump–probe measurement schemes and non-linear laser-matter interaction. Moreover, the interpretation of the experimental results in attosecond experiments has stimulated and guided major developments in theoretical descriptions of ultrafast electronic processes in matter. Motivated by these two decades of development, several large-scale facilities, including extreme light infrastructure—attosecond light pulse source (ELI-ALPS) and several free electron laser facilities (the linac coherent light source (LCLS) at Stanford and the European XFEL in Hamburg) are now pushing the development of a new generation of attosecond sources. This considerable technological effort opens new and important perspectives in the field of ultrafast science with potential applications in photochemistry, photobiology and advanced electronics. In this context, the joint focus issue on Attosecond technology(/ies) and science of <i>J. Phys. Photon.</i> and <i>J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys.</i> aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in attosecond science, from the basic science involved in the generation and in applications of attosecond pulses to the technologies that are required.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for coherently shaping attosecond x-ray pulses at free-electron lasers. We show that by seeding an FEL with a short coherent seed that overfills the amplification bandwidth, one can shape the wigner function of the pulse by controlling the undulator taper profile. The examples of controllable coherent pulse pairs and trains, as well as isolated spectrotemporally shaped pulses with very broad coherent bandwidths are examined in detail. Existing attosecond XFELs can achieve these experimental conditions in a two-stage cascade, in which the coherent seed is generated by a short current spike in an electron bunch and shaped in an unspoiled region within the same bunch. We experimentally demonstrate the production of pulse pairs using this method at the Linac Coherent Light Source.

Abstract:In this paper, several schemes of soft X-ray and hard X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) and their progress are reviewed. Self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) schemes, the high gain harmonic generation (HGHG) scheme and various enhancement schemes through seeding and beam manipulations are discussed, especially in view of the generation of attosecond X-ray pulses. Our recent work on the generation of attosecond hard X-ray pulses is also discussed. In our study, the enhanced SASE scheme is utilized, using electron beam parameters of an XFEL under construction at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). Laser, chicane and electron beam parameters are optimized to generate an isolated attosecond hard X-ray pulse at 0.1 nm (12.4 keV). The simulations show that the manipulation of electron energy beam profile may lead to the generation of an isolated attosecond hard X-ray of 150 attosecond pulse at 0.1 nm.

Abstract:The recent demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses from an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) opens the possibility for probing ultrafast electron dynamics at X-ray wavelengths. An established experimental method for probing ultrafast dynamics is X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, where the X-ray absorption spectrum is measured by scanning the central photon energy and recording the resultant photoproducts. The spectral bandwidth inherent to attosecond pulses is wide compared to the resonant features typically probed, which generally precludes the application of this technique in the attosecond regime. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a new technique to conduct transient absorption spectroscopy with broad bandwidth attosecond pulses with the aid of ghost imaging, recovering sub-bandwidth resolution in photoproduct-based absorption measurements.

Abstract:Advanced experimental methods with high spatial-temporal resolutions are essential for ultrafast dynamics at microscopic scales, primarily focusing on the movements of individual electrons or nuclei. The rapid development of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has created a new foundation for ultrafast dynamics research by offering fully coherent ultrabright femtosecond X-ray pulses. The cutting-edge technology developed around the XFELs has enabled revolutionary breakthroughs in multiple disciplines in the past decade. X-ray emission/absorption spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and X-ray crystallography have quickly adapted to the XFEL facilities, investigating high-resolution structure and dynamics. In this review, the principles of the above three characterization techniques are summarized with the associated applications. Together with effective pumping methods triggering dynamics or reactions, time-resolved information can be measured at XFELs using the "pump-probe" approach. The development of the XFEL-based time-resolved methods is particularly significant for light-sensitive macromolecules. Novel insights into the structural dynamics are being gathered for a comprehensive understanding of the detailed process and its underlying molecular mechanism.
Capturing Nonlinear Electron Dynamics with Fully Characterised Attosecond X-ray Pulses

Abstract:Attosecond X-ray pulses are the key to studying electron dynamics at their natural time scale involving specific electronic states. They are promising to build the conceptual bridge between physical and chemical photo-reaction processes. Free-electron lasers have demonstrated their capability of generating intense attosecond X-ray pulses. However, harnessing them for time-resolving experiments and investigations of nonlinear X-ray absorption mechanisms remains a cutting-edge challenge. We have characterised X-ray pulses with durations of down to 700$\,$attoseconds and peak powers up to 200$\,$GW at $\sim$ 1$\,$keV photon energy via angular streaking at the SQS instrument of the European XFEL. As direct application, we present results of nonlinear X-ray-matter interaction via state-specific spectroscopy on a transient system. Using the derived spectral and temporal information of each pulse, we deliberately steer the probability for formation of double-core vacancies in neon gas atoms through excitation or ionisation of the second inner-shell electron after K-shell ionisation. Our results advance the field of attosecond science with highly intense and fully characterised X-ray pulses to the site-specific investigation of electronic motion in transient media.

Abstract:Free electron lasers operating in the soft and hard X-ray regime provide capabilities for ultrafast science in many areas, including X-ray spectroscopy, diffractive imaging, solution and material scattering, and X-ray crystallography. Ultrafast time-resolved applications in the picosecond, femtosecond, and attosecond regimes are often possible using single-shot experimental configurations. Aside from X-ray pump and X-ray probe measurements, all other types of ultrafast experiments require the synchronized operation of pulsed laser excitation for resonant or nonresonant pumping. This Perspective focuses on the opportunities for the optical control of structural dynamics by applying techniques from nonlinear spectroscopy to ultrafast X-ray experiments. This typically requires the synthesis of two or more optical pulses with full control of pulse and interpulse parameters. To this end, full characterization of the femtosecond optical pulses is also highly desirable. It has recently been shown that two-color and two-pulse femtosecond excitation of fluorescent protein crystals allowed a Tannor-Rice coherent control experiment, performed under characterized conditions. Pulse shaping and the ability to synthesize multicolor and multipulse conditions are highly desirable and would enable XFEL facilities to offer capabilities for structural dynamics. This Perspective will give a summary of examples of the types of experiments that could be achieved, and it will additionally summarize the laser, pulse shaping, and characterization that would be recommended as standard equipment for time-resolved XFEL beamlines, with an emphasis on ultrafast time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography.

Abstract:Attosecond science represents a new frontier in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics, enabling one to probe the exceedingly fast dynamics associated with purely electronic dynamics in a wide range of systems. This paper presents a brief discussion of the technology required to generate attosecond light pulses and gives representative examples of attosecond science carried out in several laboratories. Attosecond transient absorption, a very powerful method in attosecond science, is then reviewed and several examples of gas phase and condensed phase experiments that have been carried out in the Leone/Neumark laboratories are described.

Abstract:X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) are cutting-edge pulsed x-ray sources, whose extraordinary pulse parameters promise to unlock unique applications. Several new methods have been developed at XFELs; however, no methods are known, which allow ab initio atomic level structure determination using only a single XFEL pulse. Here, we present experimental results, demonstrating the determination of the 3D atomic structure from data obtained during a single 25 fs XFEL pulse. Parallel measurement of hundreds of Bragg reflections was done by collecting Kossel line patterns of GaAs and GaP. To the best of our knowledge with these measurements, we reached the ultimate temporal limit of the x-ray structure solution possible today. These measurements open the way for obtaining crystalline structures during non-repeatable fast processes, such as structural transformations. For example, the atomic structure of matter at extremely non-ambient conditions or transient structures formed in irreversible physical, chemical, or biological processes may be captured in a single shot measurement during the transformation. It would also facilitate time resolved pump-probe structural studies making them significantly shorter than traditional serial crystallography.

Abstract:Abstract Since the first demonstration of the generation of attosecond pulses (1 as = 10-18s) in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region, several measurement techniques have been introduced, at the beginning for the temporal characterization of the pulses, and immediately after for the investigation of electronic and nuclear ultrafast dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids with unprecedented temporal resolution. The attosecond spectroscopic tools established in the last two decades, together with the development of sophisticated theoretical methods for the interpretation of the experimental outcomes, allowed to unravel and investigate physical processes never observed before, such as the delay in photoemission from atoms and solids, the motion of electrons in molecules after prompt ionization which precede any notable nuclear motion, the temporal evolution of the tunneling process in dielectrics, and many others. This review focused on applications of attosecond techniques to the investigation of ultrafast processes in atoms, molecules and solids. Thanks to the introduction and ongoing developments of new spectroscopic techniques, the attosecond science is rapidly moving towards the investigation, understanding and control of coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in increasingly complex systems, with ever more accurate and complete investigation techniques. Here we will review the most common techniques presenting the latest results in atoms, molecules and solids.

Abstract:X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) deliver short (<100 fs) and intense (∼10(12) photons) pulses of hard X-rays, making them excellent sources for time-resolved studies. Here we show that, despite the inherent instabilities of current (SASE based) XFELs, they can be used for measuring high-quality X-ray absorption data and we report femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurements of a spin-crossover system, iron(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) in water. The data indicate that the low-spin to high-spin transition can be modeled by single-exponential kinetics convoluted with the overall time resolution. The resulting time constant is ∼160 fs.
