Abstract:Integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on textiles shows promise for enabling facile deployment and expanding MOF applications. While MOFs deposited on flat substrates can show relatively smooth surface texture, most previous reports of MOFs integrated on fibers show poor conformality with many individual crystal domains. Here we report a new low-temperature (<70 degrees C) method to deposit uniform and smooth MOF thin films on fiber surfaces using an energy enhanced layer-by-layer (LbL) method with an ALD Al2O3 nucleation layer. Cross-sectional TEM images show a well-defined core@shell structure of the MOF-functionalized fiber, and SEM shows a flat MOF surface texture. We analyze the thickness and mass increase data of LbL HKUST-1 MOF thin films on ALD-coated polypropylene fibers and find the growth rate to be 288-290 ng cm(-2) per LbL cycle. Unlike planar LbL MOF embodiments where adsorption capacities are difficult to quantify, the large volume quantity on a typical fiber mat enables accurate surface area measurement of these unique MOF morphologies. After 40 LbL cycles the MOFs on fibers exhibit N-2 adsorption BET surface areas of up to 93.6 m(2) g(MOF+fiber)(-1) (similar to 535 m(2) g(MOF)(-1)) and breakthrough test results reveal high dynamic loadings for NH3 (1.37 molNH(3) kg(MOF+fiber)(-1)) and H2S (1.49 molH(2)S kg(MOF+fiber)(-1)). This synthesis route is applicable to many polymer fibers, and the fiber@ALD@MOF structure is promising for gas filtration, membrane separation, catalysis, chemical sensing and other applications.
Copper Benzenetricarboxylate Metal-Organic Framework Nucleation Mechanisms on Metal Oxide Powders and Thin Films Formed by Atomic Layer Deposition.

Abstract:Chemically functional microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals are attractive for filtration and gas storage applications, and recent results show that they can be immobilized on high surface area substrates, such as fiber mats. However, fundamental knowledge is still lacking regarding initial key reaction steps in thin film MOF nucleation and growth. We find that thin inorganic nucleation layers formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) can promote solvothermal growth of copper benzenetricarboxylate MOF (Cu-BTC) on various substrate surfaces. The nature of the ALD material affects the MOF nucleation time, crystal size and morphology, and the resulting MOF surface area per unit mass. To understand MOF nucleation mechanisms, we investigate detailed Cu-BTC MOF nucleation behavior on metal oxide powders and Al2O3, ZnO, and TiO2 layers formed by ALD on polypropylene substrates. Studying both combined and sequential MOF reactant exposure conditions, we find that during solvothermal synthesis ALD metal oxides can react with the MOF metal precursor to form double hydroxy salts that can further convert to Cu-BTC MOF. The acidic organic linker can also etch or react with the surface to form MOF from an oxide metal source, which can also function as a nucleation agent for Cu-BTC in the mixed solvothermal solution. We discuss the implications of these results for better controlled thin film MOF nucleation and growth.
Facile Conversion of Hydroxy Double Salts to Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Metal Oxide Particles and Atomic Layer Deposition Thin-Film Templates

Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.

Abstract:Fabrics have been used broadly in daily life for an enormous variety of applications due to their intrinsic advantages, such as flexibility, renewability, and good processability. Integrating natural fabrics with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy to improve the added value of textiles with special functionalities. Here, a facile, low-cost, and scalable technology is reported for the in situ growth of MOFs on cotton fabrics. A uniform and dense coating of regular octahedral Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (CuBTC) crystals was formed on the fiber surface, followed by treatment with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane and triethoxyoctylsilane to create a superhydrophobic CuBTC@cotton fabric (SMCF), which greatly improved its water stability and extended superhydrophobic CuBTC's potential applications. The as-prepared MCF has a specific surface area of 229 m2/g, which is 11 times that of pristine fabrics (21 m2/g). This high porosity further endows the fabric with enhanced loading capacity of essential oils to enable excellent antibacterial ability. Moreover, the SMCF also exhibits excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and anti-icing performances. In addition, we performed COMSOL simulations to investigate the dynamic freezing process of water on the surface of samples, which agrees well with our experimental observations. By combining the merits of both fabrics and MOFs, the MCF is expected to extend the applications of traditional textiles in antifouling, safety, the fragrance industry, and healthcare for the next-generation multifunctional fabrics.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:Composites of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are appealing for constructing new materials with applications in catalysts, photonics, gas separation, and environmental remediation. In this paper, the growth of various MOFs on individual CNCs was investigated by varying the growth conditions to obtain a hybrid material, MOF@CNCs. While ZIF-8 and UiO-66 uniformly grew on the surface of CNCs, other common MOFs (e.g., MIL-96, MOF-808, HKUST-1, and MOF-5) exhibited irregular growth patterns. The morphology of the MOF@CNCs materials obtained depended on the metals and ligand used. Furthermore, we investigated the growth of Prussian blue (PB) on CNCs, but we were unable to realize well-defined composites with the framework attached to the surface of CNCs. These investigations are important to realize CNC@MOF composite materials where individual CNCs are functionalized with MOFs.

Abstract:A mechanism for chemical attachment and growth of a Cu-BTC Metal–Organic Framework, also known as MOF-199 or HKUST-1, onto cellulosic substrates is reported. Four different experimental procedures were attempted in order to elucidate the role of carboxylate groups on the anionic cellulose’s surface. The order of addition of Cu(OAc)2—copper acetate, BTH3, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid and TEA—Triethylamine was found to be a critical factor for the attachment and growth of the MOF-199 crystals onto anionic cellulose. The presence of MOF-199 crystals was probed using XRD and XPS spectra and a strong chemical interaction to the carboxymethylated cellulose fibers was confirmed by intense and vigorous washing of the specimens with water, DMF and methanol. Based on the recognized ability of MOF-199 to capture gases and toxic chemicals, combined with the availability of cellulose-based fibrous materials, the described procedure provides the basis for future fabrication of functionalized fibers and active filtration media.

Abstract:Supported Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with a high specific surface area are of great interest for applications in gas storage, separation, sensing, and catalysis. In the present work we report the synthesis of a novel composite architecture of MOF materials supported on a flexible mat of electrospun nanofibers. The system, based on three-dimensional interwoven nanofibers, was designed by using a low-cost and scalable multistep synthesis protocol involving a combination of electrospinning and low-temperature atomic layer deposition of oxide materials, and their subsequent solvothermal conversion under either conventional or microwave-assisted heating. This highly versatile approach allows the production of different types of supported MOF crystals with controlled sizes, morphology, orientation and high accessibility.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Natural cellulose fiber-based materials have been widely used in daily life for a broad application owing to their intrinsic merits such as easy availability, eco-friendly, good processability, and outstanding physical–mechanical properties. Surface modification of natural fibers with nanostructures is an effective strategy to integrate the textile substrates with many favorable functionalities. Here, a green, facile, and universal method is introduced for the in situ growth of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in cellulose fiber-based materials (CelluMOFs). Compared to the pristine fibers, the resulting CelluMOFs have high porosity with up to 50 times larger specific surface area and enhanced loading capacity to functional molecules (essential oils, antibacterial agents, and active drugs) with 23–36 times higher loading content. The CelluMOFs also exhibit high adsorption capability to volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide. Moreover, the CelluMOFs textiles loaded with a model drug (doxorubicin) show a steady release profile and deep skin permeation capability. These CelluMOFs combine the advantages of both cellulose fibers and CD-MOFs, which greatly extend their applications in the fragrance industry, antimicrobial, pollutant removal, and biomedical textiles.

Abstract:Crystalline metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered extensive attention owing to their highly ordered porous structure and physicochemical properties. However, their practical application often requires their integration with various substrates, which is challenging because of their weakly adhesive nature and the diversity of substrates that exhibit different properties. Herein, we report the use of amorphous metal–phenolic network coatings to facilitate the growth of crystalline MOF coatings on various particle and planar substrates. Crystalline MOFs with different metal ions and morphologies were successfully deposited on substrates (13 types) of varying sizes, shapes, and surface chemistries. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of the coated crystalline MOFs (e.g., composition, thickness) could be tuned using different synthesis conditions. The engineered MOF-coated membranes demonstrated excellent liquid and gas separation performance, exhibiting a high H2 permeance of 63200 GPU and a H2/CH4 selectivity of 10.19, likely attributable to the thin nature of the coating (~180 nm), which can be realized using the present strategy. Considering the vast array of MOFs available (>90,000) and the diversity of substrates, this work is expected to pave the way for creating a wide range of MOF composites and coatings with potential applications in biomedicine, environmental science, and agriculture.

Abstract:Coating of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on flexible substrates is a crucial technology for applications such as purification/separation, sensing, and catalysis. In this work, a facile coordination replication strategy was developed to coat various MOFs onto flexible fibrous materials where a dense layer of an insoluble precursor template, such as a layered hydroxide salt, was first deposited onto a fiber substrate via a mild interfacial reaction and then rapidly transformed into a MOF coating in a ligand solution at room temperature. Spatiotemporal harmonization of solid precursor dissolution and MOF crystallization enabled precise replication of the precursor layer morphology to form a continuous MOF coating composed of intergrown crystals. The resulting flexible, highly robust, and processable fibrous MOF/textile composites demonstrated tremendous potential for industrially relevant applications such as continuous removal of the organosulfur compound dibenzothiophene from simulated gasoline and ammonia capture. This rapid, versatile, eco-friendly, and scalable MOF coating process at room temperature gives rise to new possibilities for preparing MOF-coated functional materials.

Abstract:By virtue of their extraordinarily high surface areas, ordered pore structures, various compositions and rich functionality, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are of great interest in diverse fields such as gas separation, sensing, catalysis, energy, environment science and biomedicine. However, the difficulty in processing MOF crystals and controlling the superstructure of MOFs is emerging as critical issue in their application. Herein, we report that a robust template, i.e., nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), can be used for the synthesis of MOF materials with one‐dimensional (1D) nanofiber morphology. The NFC@MOF core‐shell nanofibers with a uniform network structure and high aspect ratios can be prepared by use of this template. The small crystal size, flexibility and good dispersity of NFC@MOF nanofibers make it convenient for macroscale assembly and solution processing of MOF materials. A proof‐of‐concept study has been demonstrated that free‐standing MOF nanofiber membranes represent good performance in applications of water treatment and heterogeneous catalysis reaction. Abstract:Constructing architectures with hierarchical porosity has been widely considered as the most efficient way to bypass the problems related to slow mass transfer and inaccessibility of internal space in MOFs. Now, a crystal-growth-dominated strategy is proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs). When the crystal growth is dominated by the monomer attachment, the aggregation of nonionic surfactant or polymer can be easily captured and released during the crystal growth process, resulting in the formation and ordering hierarchical pores along the radial direction. Owing to the accelerated mass diffusion and more exposed active sites of this design, HP-MOFs exhibited an enhanced catalytic efficiency in styrene oxidation.
Face‐to‐Face Growth of Wafer‐Scale 2D Semiconducting MOF Films on Dielectric Substrates

Abstract:The preparation of large‐area 2D conductive metal–organic framework (MOF) films remains highly desirable but challenging. Here, inspired by the capillary phenomenon, a face‐to‐face confinement growth method to grow conductive 2D Cu2(TCPP) (TCPP = meso‐tetra(4‐carboxyphenyl)porphine) MOF films on dielectric substrates is developed. Trace amounts of solutions containing low‐concentration Cu2+ and TCPP are pumped cyclically into a micropore interface to produce this growth. The crystal structures are confirmed with various characterization techniques, which include high‐resolution atomic force microscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo‐TEM). The Cu2(TCPP) MOF film exhibit an electrical conductivity of ≈0.007 S cm−1, which is approximately four orders of magnitude higher than other carboxylic‐acid‐based MOF materials (10−6 S cm−1). Other wafer‐scale conductive MOF films such as M3(HHTP)2 (M = Cu, Co, and Ni; HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11‐triphenylenehexol) can be produced utilizing this strategy and suggests this method has widescale applicability potential.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promise for a multitude of applications owing to their high porosity and surface area. However, the majority of conventional MOFs possess only micropores with very limited accessibility to substances larger than 2 nm—especially functional biomacromolecules like some proteins. It is challenging to create an appropriately large pore size while avoiding framework collapse in MOFs. Herein, we present the generation of mesopores in microporous MOFs through three facile and effective techniques, namely Soxhlet washing, linker hydrolysis and linker thermolysis. These postsynthetic elimination approaches have been applied in selected MOFs, including PCN-250, PCN-160 and UiO-66, and controllably generate MOFs with hierarchical pores and high stability. Our work demonstrates reproducible and straightforward methods resulting in hierarchically porous materials that possess the benefits of mesoporosity while borrowing the robustness of a micropore framework. All the procedures can be conducted reliably at a multigram scale and operation time less than 6 h, representing a significant effort in the field of MOF synthesis. These hierarchically porous MOFs show great promise in a wide range of applications as efficient adsorbents, catalysts and drug carriers.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose fiber-based textiles are ubiquitous in daily life for their processability, biodegradability, and outstanding flexibility. Integrating cellulose textiles with functional coating materials can unlock their potential functionalities to engage diverse applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal candidate materials for such integration, thanks to their unique merits, such as large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and species diversity. However, achieving scalable fabrication of MOFs-textiles with high mechanical durability remains challenging. Here, we report a facile and scalable strategy for direct MOF growth on cotton fibers grafted via the diazonium chemistry. The as-prepared ZIF-67-Cotton textile (ZIF-67-CT) exhibits excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance and organic contamination degradation via the peroxymonosulfate activation. The ZIF-67-CT is also used to encapsulate essential oils such as carvacrol to enable antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Additionally, by directly tethering a hydrophobic molecular layer onto the MOF-coated surface, superhydrophobic ZIF-67-CT is achieved with excellent self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil-water separation performances. More importantly, the reported strategy is generic and applicable to other MOFs and cellulose fiber-based materials, and various large-scale multi-functional MOFs-textiles can be successfully manufactured, resulting in vast applications in wastewater purification, fragrance industry, and outdoor gears.
