Abstract:Certain viruses enclose their genetic material in a protein shell called the capsid, and it is known that electrostatic interactions are an important driving force in capsid formation. The authors use mean-field theory to show that not only the total charge, but also the charge distribution and configurational entropy play a significant role in this formation process, leading to an improved understanding of virus assembly.
