Abstract:This study employed 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide to mitigate the corrosion of Q235 steel in a hydrochloric acid environment. The evaluation of corrosion inhibition effectiveness was comprehensively characterized by combining electrochemical experiments with surface morphology observation. The experimental results demonstrated the capability of the ionic liquid in establishing a film layer on the surface of Q235 steel, which effectively hindered the charge transfer process. Notably, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attained a value of 92.3% at a concentration of 1mM corrosion inhibitor. Moreover, the process of the corrosion inhibitor adhering to the steel surface aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, demonstrating physicochemical adsorption behavior. The density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were utilized for further exploration of the corrosion inhibition mechanism, and the results indicate the ionic liquid can be adsorbed onto the (110) surface of Fe in parallel through N atoms on the imidazole ring.

Abstract:In pickling conditions, corrosion inhibitors are commonly used to mitigate the corrosive effects of the acidic environment on metal surfaces. Green corrosion inhibitors are substances that provide corrosion protection while being environmentally friendly, often derived from renewable resources or having minimal environmental impact. Ionic liquids are a class of green corrosion inhibitors that have gained attention for their potential in corrosion protection due to their unique properties. In this study, we synthesized a bio-based choline hexanoate ionic liquid (referred to as ChH) and used FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy to elucidate its structure. Further the effectiveness of ChH IL was examined in preventing MS corrosion in 5% HCl at 20–80 °C. The corrosion behavior of MS was examined using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and EIS measurements. Increasing inhibitor concentration and temperatures improved the inhibition performance. The highest efficiency i.e., 98.16% was observed at 3.3 × 10 −3 M of ChH at 60 °C. To verify the adsorption of ChH on the MS further investigations were done using FT-IR, Raman, and XPS analysis.

Abstract:The challenge of corrosion posed as a result of acidic sittings is considered as a major industrial concern, wherein ionic liquids serve as crucial in addressing the corrosive impacts on metals. In this study, five selected cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids were synthesized; IL-1MPyrBr, IL-1MPipBr, IL-2PyBr, IL-3MPyBr and IL-4MPyBr and their chemical structures were characterized using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, IH-NMR, 13C-NMR, Elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Their corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied on carbon steel in 1 M HCl via different concentrations at 298 K using chemical and electrochemical parameters (PDP and EIS). DFT quantum parameters were computed, and the noted results were in complete compatible with the experimental. The synthesized ILs recorded excellent inhibition on the carbon steel corrosion in acidic media with increasing efficiency by increasing the inhibitor concentrations from 20 to 100 ppm. Different cations in the synthesized ILs affect the anti-corrosion effect and IL-3MPyBr showed the highest inhibition (ηR); 96.12% using the lowest concentration. Kinetic and thermodynamic considerations were studied and illustrated.

Abstract:Four imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were selected to investigate the inhibiting effect of ILs with various alkyl chain lengths on the corrosion of mild steel in H2S and HCl solution using electrochemical experiments, weight loss and surface analyses, and quantum chemical study. The results demonstrated that these ILs acted as mixed-type inhibitors and efficiently inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in H2S and HCl solution. Their excellent corrosion inhibition ability was due to their adsorption process on the metal surface, which followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore, extending the alkyl chain length in the ILs could improve their inhibition performance.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition performance of a quaternary phosphonium-based ionic liquid, i.e., hexadecyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (HPP), on mild steel in 1 M HCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) methods. The surface characterization of mild steel was examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency increases with its increasing concentration, and it can reach up to 99.1% at the concentration of 0.07 mM HPP. PDP data showed that the absorption of HPP conformed to Langmuir adsorption, which served as a mixed-type inhibitor, involving chemisorption and physisorption. SEM analysis confirmed the formation of barrier film on the metal surface, inhibiting the acid attack. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of inhibitor molecules on the mild steel surface. A match between the experimental and theoretical findings was evidenced.

Abstract:In this study, the mild steel corrosion inhibition performance and the corresponding mechanisms of five imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions were investigated using electrochemical experiments, weight loss measurement, morphology analysis, and quantum chemical calculation. The results revealed that these ILs inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in H2S and HCl solutions and did not change the corresponding mechanism of the corrosion reaction. The corrosion inhibition ability of these ILs decreased when the temperature increased. 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Amim]Br) exhibited the strongest mild steel corrosion inhibition capacity in H2S and HCl solutions. The corrosion inhibition capacity of the ILs can be attributed to their adsorption on metal surfaces, which obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.E(HOMO)exhibited a higher influence thanE(LUMO)on the corrosion inhibition performance of the imidazolium-based ILs.

Abstract:Corrosion is a significant problem that negatively affects a wide range of structures and buildings, resulting in their premature failure, which causes safety hazards and significant economic loss. For this reason, various approaches have been developed to prevent or minimize the effects of corrosion, including corrosion inhibitors. Recently, biobased inhibitors have gained a certain interest thanks to their unique properties, eco-friendliness, and availability. Among all the green precursors, lignin is of particular interest, being a natural polymer that can be obtained from different sources including agricultural residues. Corrosion inhibitors based on ionic liquids (ILs) also present interesting advantages, such as low volatility and high tunability. If combined, it may be possible to obtain new lignin-based ILs that present interesting corrosion inhibitor properties. In this work, the inhibition properties of new biobased lignin ILs and the influence of anions and cations on the corrosion of mild steel in an aqueous solution of 0.01 M NaCl were investigated by Potentiostatic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (PEIS) and Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP). Moreover, the surface was characterized using SEM, EDS, and optical profilometry. The IL choline syringate showed promising performance, reducing the corrosion current after 24 h immersion in 0.01 M sodium chloride, from 1.66 μA/cm2 for the control to 0.066 μA/cm2 with 10 mM of the IL present. In addition to its performance as a corrosion inhibitor, both components of this IL also meet or exceed the current additional desired properties of such compounds, being readily available, and well tolerated in organisms and the environment.

Effectiveness of Some Novel Ionic Liquids on Mild Steel Corrosion Protection in Acidic Environment: Experimental and Theoretical Inspections

Abstract:Three ionic liquids (ILs)-1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium Imidazolate (BMPyrIM), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate (BMImIM), and bis(1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate) (BBMImIM)-were synthesized and examined experimentally and theoretically as potential inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in HCl (1.0 M) solution. To our knowledge, two of the ILs successfully synthesized in our laboratory named BMPyrIM and BBMImIM are novel. Different electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)), surface and structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)) and theoretical (Density functional theory (DFT)) techniques were utilized to confirm their use as efficient environmentally safe inhibitors. These ionic liquids were designed to study the cation effect (imidazolium and pyrrolidinium) and the dimeric effect of the imidazolium-based IL. A pronounced inhibiting effect was recorded using the optimum concentration (5 × 10-3 M) of BBMImIM with protection efficiency of 98.6% compared to 94.3% and 92.4% for BMImIM and BMPyrIM, respectively. The investigated ILs act as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitors and their protection obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The results obtained by SEM, EDS and AFM confirmed the mild steel protection by the formation of protective film of the ILs on the steel surface resulted in less damaged surfaces compared with the blank solution. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations illustrated the electronic structure of the investigated ILs and their optimized adsorptiοn configurations on mild steel surface. The findings from the different techniques helped to provide a supported interpretation of the inhibition mechanism.

Abstract:Five novel triphenyl hexyl imidazole derivatives were synthesized with excellent yields (78–91%) in the presence of pyridinium-based ionic liquid as catalyst. The structures of all designed compounds were confirmed through spectral methods and their purity were tested by means of thin-layer chromatography, showing one-spot. The adsorption performance and inhibitive action of imidazole compounds on the C1018 steel alloy corrosion in molar HCl medium at 323 K were examined. The applied approaches were electrochemical trainings (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy [EIS], potentiodynamic polarization [PDP], linear polarization resistance [LPR] corrosion rate, and potential vs. time), and surface examination (field emission scanning electron microscopy [FESEM]). The findings analysis exhibited that the protection capacity augmented with increasing the additive dose to reach 89.6–98.1% with 2.0 × 10−3 mol/L of imidazole derivatives. PDP profiles designated that the imidazole derivatives perform as mixed-kind inhibitors. The triphenyl hexyl imidazole molecules were adsorbed at the interface of C1018 steel/HCl following the Langmuir isotherm model. The free energy of adsorption process values showed a competitive chemical and physical adsorption of prepared imidazole compounds on the C1018 steel interface. The outcomes from the potential of zero charge (Epzc) investigations support the above interpretations. The FESEM analysis of the corroded C1018 steel in the absence and presence of studied imidazole inhibitors evidently exhibited different findings. Furthermore, the relation between the protection abilities and the structure of inhibitors molecules was discussed by applying the theoretical study of density function theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations.

Abstract:Three newly ionic liquids namely, 1-bnzyl-2-methyl-3-octyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide, 1-bnzyl-3-decyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide, and 1-bnzyl-3-dodecyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide are synthesized and their chemical structures characterized via different spectra techniques (FT-IR, elemental analysis,and 1H NMR). The corrosion inhibition of newly ionic liquids was evaluated on aluminum alloy in 1 M HCl at varied exposure temperatures (298–318 K) and varied concentrations via various experimental and theoretical methods for example mass loss, electrochemical, spectral, and computational calculations. The results illustrate that these types of ionic liquids inhibit corrosion of aluminum in acid solution with maximum inhibition efficiency was reached 83.2 % at 298 K. The inhibition efficiency increases with the addition of zinc sulfate which has a synergistic impact which was reached to 92.7%. Also, the concentration of ionic liquids and the kind of cation have an impact on the obtained results. The existence of these inhibitors in the acidic solution improves the charge transfer resistance and lessens the double-layer capacitance. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm governs the adsorption of these inhibitors' molecules on the aluminum alloy surface, and they behave as mixed-type inhibitors. The outputs reveal that the computational calculations match the experimental data rather well.

Abstract:The application of ionic liquids (ILs) in a wide range of technologies requires a thorough evaluation of their corrosion behavior to typical structural steels. In this work, the corrosion effects of two acidic type methylimidazolium derivates (potential catalyst candidates) on a low-alloyed carbon steel were studied with electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic polarization and EIS). The ILs cause a moderate corrosion around 0.1 mm/year at water content up to 10‰ and severe corrosion around 1 mm/year at 100‰, which underlines that before industrial applications of ILs systematic corrosion studies should be carried out as part of the process design. With both ILs we found that the cathodic process exhibited apparently good linear Tafel slopes in the cathodic polarization range but in the anodic range the IL with the hydrogensulfate anion showed an active-passive transition only at the highest water concentration. In this series at lower water concentrations, under 100‰, a model assuming a potential-independent anodic current rate correctly matched with the polarization data. The EIS measurement data showed chaotic, but reproducible deviations in the low frequency range, which were interpreted as the effect of the timely variation of distribution parameters and they apparently did not affect the charge transfer parameters essentially.

Abstract:A new kind of corrosion inhibitor (LOBI) based on linseed oil has been synthesized. The molecular structure of LOBI was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Its inhibiting behavior on mild steel in 1.0 M HCl was studied by electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results reveal that LOBI was a good mixed-type inhibitor. The adsorption of LOBI at 40 °C obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The N(1s) and S(2p) peaks of XPS measurement indicate that LOBI has been adsorbed onto a Q235 steel surface. The adsorption equilibrium constant, adsorption free energy and activation energy were also calculated, which indicated the adsorption of LOBI was chemisorption.

Abstract:The ureido substituted imidazolium bromides (code M-n) were synthesized and their anti-corrosion performance on A3 steel in 5 M HCl solution was studied by weight loss test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization. The experimental results reveal that the inhibitor are efficient mixed type corrosion inhibitors, and their inhibition efficiencies increase with increasing the concentration and alkyl chain. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed, indicating the adsorption of M-n on steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and spontaneous exothermic process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and quantum chemistry calculation further confirm the existence of an effective protective film of M-n on A3 steel surface. Abstract:In this work, we study the efficiency of N 1 , N 3 -dibenzyl- N 1 , N 1 , N 3 , N 3 -tetramethylpropane-1,3-diaminium chloride, as anticorrosion. This compound exhibits potential as a prospective remedy to stop the deterioration of carbon steel caused by corrosion in 1.0 M HCl. The synthesis of this compound is described in a comprehensive manner, and its composition is supported by a range of precise analytical approaches such as elemental analysis, and mass spectroscopy. Based on the findings of the investigation, the synthesized Gemini ionic liquid demonstrates a robust capacity to slow down the rate at which the metal corrodes. The Prepared compound was evaluation by electrochemical and morphology study. Our results revealed that elevating the inhibitor concentration led to an augmentation in inhibition effectiveness, reaching up to 94.8% at 200 ppm of the synthesized compound at 298 K. It is crucial to emphasize that the recently prepared Gemini ionic liquid is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption model and function as a mixed inhibitor, participating in the physio-chemisorption process of adsorption.

Abstract:Chemical modification is effective in improving the corrosion inhibition efficiency of carbon dots (CDs) on steel. Here, the imidazolium ionic liquids (IL) modified-CDs (IL-CDs) are synthesized and proved to be mixed-type corrosion inhibitors. The IL increases the pyrrole N content and facilitates the formation of a denser inhibitor film. Molecular simulations confirm that the IL reduces the π-π interaction between CDs, endowing IL-CDs with higher water solubility and better corrosion inhibition effect than CDs. The lower orbital energy gap and larger positive electrostatic potential distribution enable the inhibition efficiency of IL-CDs of 97.11% in 1 M HCl, much superior to CDs (90.80%).

Abstract:Five fatty acid-based ionic liquids (FAILs) with various anionic alkyl chain lengths are synthesized, namely methyltrioctylammonium butyrate ([N8881][C4:0]), methyltrioctylammonium caproate ([N8881][C6:0]), methyltrioctylammonium octanoate ([N8881][C8:0]), methyltrioctylammonium laurate ([N8881][C12:0]), and methyltrioctylammonium palmitate ([N8881][C16:0]), to investigate the potential effects of anionic alkyl chains on their corrosion inhibition property for mild steel in 1 M HCl solution via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, electrochemical measurements, and weight loss measurements. The results reflect that the FAIL inhibitor can adsorb on the surface of mild steel to form a protective film and effectively inhibit the corrosion. [N8881][C8:0] exhibits the optimal inhibition efficiency (96.94%) in comparison to [N8881][C4:0] (80.73%), [N8881][C6:0] (89.34%), [N8881][C12:0] (90.69%), and [N8881][C16:0] (74.42%). It is speculated that the varied anionic alkyl chain length may change the intensity of the protective film to affect the inhibition efficiency. The in-depth analysis by molecular dynamic simulation confirms that [N8881][C8:0] with the same anionic and cationic alkyl chain lengths shows the most ordered and compact film on the mild steel surface. The present study focuses on the effects of the anionic alkyl chain on the corrosion inhibition performance and provides novel insights into the design and development of effective and eco-friendly ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract:The study encompasses the synthesis of an ionic liquid corrosion inhibitor using the ion exchange method. Its impact on the corrosion and hydrogen permeation behaviour of X80 pipeline steel in a CO 2 environment is thoroughly investigated. The findings reveal that the corrosion resistance and hydrogen atom diffusion of X80 pipeline steel exhibit an initial decline, followed by an increase with escalating inhibitor concentration. The nadir values are recorded at an inhibitor concentration of 500 mg·L −1 , attaining a remarkable maximum inhibition efficiency of 97%. Following the addition of corrosion inhibitors, the formation of corrosion products notably decreases, indicating a positive inhibition effect on both corrosion and hydrogen permeation. Additionally, a correlation is successfully established between hydrogen permeation parameters and inhibitor concentration.

Abstract:Triazolyl bis-amino acid derivatives readily synthesized via click chemistry were identified as novel potent corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in HCl. The inhibitive characteristic of compound 4 was studied in detail via gravimetric measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, a quantum chemical study suggests that the triazole ring involved in these inhibitors is structurally essential for the protection of metal surface.

Abstract:Q235 carbon steel is a commonly used engineering material, but its application in marine environments is limited by its susceptibility to corrosion, especially localized corrosion that can lead to material perforation. Effective inhibitors are crucial to addressing this issue, particularly in acidic environments where localized areas become increasingly acidic. This study reports the synthesis of a new imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor and evaluates its effectiveness in corrosion inhibition performance using potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. High-resolution optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed for surface morphology analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to explore the protection mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the self-synthesized imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor offers an excellent corrosion protection performance for Q235 carbon steel in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl acidic solution. This inhibitor can provide a new strategy for carbon steel corrosion protection.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition performance of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate (BMIm), was studied on AA 6061 alloy in 1 M HCl solution at 303 K, 333 K, and 363 K by gravimetric tests, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to detect the surface morphologies and chemical composition of the surface films. The results indicate that this IL inhibits AA 6061 corrosion in acid with maximum inhibition efficiencies of 98.2%, 86.6%, and 41.2% obtained at 303 K, 333 K, and 363 K respectively. Inhibition efficiency generally decreased with increasing immersion time; the major exception was at 303 K, whereby the inhibition efficiency was detected to increase with immersion time from 30 to 90 min and then decrease slightly beyond 90 min. The results indicate that BMIm is a mixed-type inhibitor with a predominant effect on cathodic reactions. Surface morphology analyses by SEM revealed less surface damage in the presence of the inhibitor. XPS analysis established the development of a protective film on the AA 6061 surface which was hydrophobic in nature.
