Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) provide adequate thermal energy storage via the latent heat's absorption and release during phase transitions, ensuring more extended storage periods and higher energy density, but the selection of PCMs is crucial; some PCMs may have low thermal conductivity or a narrow operating temperature range, which may affect system performance and reliability. To address these disadvantages of PCMs, many parameters that influence the performance of latent heat energy storage (LHES) have been used. In this article review, all these parameters, which included geometry parameters, improvement of the effectiveness of PCMs, operation parameters, and system rotation, have been reviewed. This review focused on the parameters that improve the performance of shell and tube in LHES, which were not considered in the previous review articles. Based on the review, the heat transfer fluid flow rate slightly influences the charging and discharging time, unlike the inlet temperature of heat transfer fluid (HTF), which significantly impacts the process. Also, it is noted that a very high increase in the angular velocity with a range of 4.5 ∗ 10 4 rpm to 36 ∗ 10 4 rpm has a slight effect on the melting time compared to the stationary system, whereas decreasing angular velocity from 1 rpm to 0.1 rpm would lead to a high enhancement of the melting process. Thus, it's essential to know the allowable limit of angular velocity for enhancing the performance of LHES, which should be studied in future works.
